Substantive Typed Letter Signed, on printed personalized stationery, 4to, May 26, 1930

Referring to both "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris," Gershwin writes to Leslie Rogers of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, in part, "I will try to locate the extra symphonic parts you ask for in connection with the 'Rhapsody in Blue'... As they are the only ones I have please send them back to me after you have finished using them. I believe Harms is arranging with Mr. Fiedler for a suitable fee for 'An American in Paris'...." Overall sunning and traces of mounting on reverse. The "H" in the name Harms had been corrected by the typist in such a way as to show the erased area where the new typed letter was added. Gershwin signed boldly, "George Gershwin." A substantive though brief letter. Gershwin composed "Rhapsody in Blue," in 1924, and it premiered on February 12, 1924, in Aeolian Hall, New York, conducted by Paul Whiteman, who commissioned the music, with Gershwin playing the piano. Gershwin refers to his music publisher, John Harms and his publishing company. "Rhapsody in Blue" proved to be a difficult piece to play for the piano player who was not Gershwin himself. Between its debut in 1924 and 1940, that is after Gershwin's early death, Harms brought out variations of the much loved "Rhapsody." In 1940, Warner Bros. Music ,which succeeded Harms' music company, published a version of the complex music for single piano that is considered both simpler and easier to play. Gershwin wrote "An American in Paris" in 1928, and it debuted in Carnegie Hall on December 13, 1928. The reference to Mr. Fiedler is most likely to Arthur Fiedler (1894-1979) best known as the long time conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra beginning in 1930 until his death. Fiedler and the Boston Pops recorded "An American in Paris" in 1935. In the year of our letter, Fiedler began his long career with the Boston Pops.

        Saint Joan.

London: Constable and Company, Ltd.,, 1924. A Chronicle Play in Six Scenes and an Epilogue. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, fore edge untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Photogravure of the author mounted on rear pastedown. Extremities lightly bumped, cloth a little faded, creased along the spine, small spot to front board, endleaves a touch tanned. A very good copy in rather ragged dust jacket with loss of front flap and portion of spine and front panel, sometime backed with lined paper. First edition, first impression, humorously inscribed twice by the author: on the half-title Shaw carries on from the printed text "Saint Joan" with "… didn't know how to read. Joan Noël Anderson did; but her spelling was Something Awful. G. Bernard Shaw, May Day 1925"; on p. v he has underlined the words "Chevalier D'Eon" and remarks that "This shows that the book is a first edition. The later ones have another name in place of the Chevalier D'Eon. Remember this when you are old enough and wise enough to sell it and buy a nice new one. G.M.S. [sic]". A gift inscription on the front free endpaper indicates that the recipient was originally given the book the previous year by one "P. R. B."; this is followed by a vivid quotation in a distinct hand, asking "If another Christ were to descend to us to-day, should we recognise Him? Should we not be the ones to cast the first stone, to known the first nail, to light the first faggot - in the name of Christ, religion, virtue and Patriotism?" A richly associative copy with two superb inscriptions by Shaw.

        Seducers in Ecuador

London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1924 First edition, first printing. One of 1,500 copies. Publisher's red marbled boards, with a white paper title label lettered in red to the spine; in the original cream dust jacket, lettered and decorated in red. Book about fine, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, rubbing to the folds, some faint soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. A fresh, near fine copy. Woolmer 52. Seducers in Ecuador is a modernist novella written by Vita Sackville-West and dedicated to her lover and publisher Virginia Woolf. In addition to being of the author's most complex and stylized pieces, Seducers in Ecuador was also Woolf's favorite of Sackville-West's writing. Indeed, in her letter to Sackville-West on September 14, 1924, Woolf praised this story as "the sort of thing that I should like to write myself…. I like its texture--the sense of all the fine things you have dropped in to it, so that it is full of beauty in itself when nothing is happening… and I like its obscurity so that we can play about with it--interpret in different ways, and the beauty and fantasticality of the details" (The Letters of Virginia Woolf Vol. 3).. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. Limited to 500 copies numbered and signed by the artist, this being copy no. 242. Large quarto (12 3/16 x 9 7/8 inches; 310 x 250 mm.). [x], 11-197, [3, blank] pp. Text with decorative borders and initials. Twelve mounted color plates with captioned tissue guards and numerous black and white text illustrations including seventeen full-page.Publisher's vellum, front cover and spine pictorially stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. On the lower edge of the front cover there is a small 1/4 inch abrasion to the vellum, otherwise this is a fine copy complete with the publisher's blue cloth dust jacket, spine pictorially stamped in gilt, and the original plain cream paper dust jacket (slightly worn at extremities).Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) ?"was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen?'s Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen?'s designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring… Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen?'s objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story?'s emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions?" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).

Strait Is The Gate (Wrapper Design By Dame Laura Knight)

The First UK Printing published by Jarrolds in 1924.The BOOK is in near FINE condition.Light pushing to the lower spine with some bumping to the lower corners. Light toning to the text block.Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is in VERY GOOD+ condition. The joints are split with both the front and rear panels detached.Spine is a little darkened with mild creasing at the upper end. Some rubbing at the corners with a little loss in places. The Dame Laura Knight designed wrapper however, comes together very nicely and looks very presentable in the removable Brodart archival cover. The scarce First english translation by Dorothy Bussy, translator and author, member of the Strachey family:'Befriending Andre Gide in 1918 in Cambridge altered the direction of Bussy's life and re-ignited her energies as a translator. The often violent but unreciprocated passion she felt for him lasted until her death and fuelled the more than thousand letters which they exchanged between 1918 and 1951.Only two short works had been translated into English by the time 'Strait Is The Gate', Bussy's felicitous version of La Porte Etroite, appeared in 1924.At the time listing, the only available copy in wrapper on the market.Very scarce.         Certain Factors Affecting Telegraph Speed

New York: American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE), 1924. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. [4], 1369 pages. 4to 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. Publisher's blue cloth with 2 sets of blindstamped rules on front and rear covers and volume title and date in gilt on spine. Endpapers browned as usual, front blank flyleaf separated and laid in loosely. The entire volume #43 of the Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, covering publications of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) from January to December 1924. Printed at the Press of Mellroy & Smith Inc, 22 Thames St. New York. Cloth. This volume publishes in chronological order "the papers and discussions presented at the four conventions and two regional meetings held under its [ American Institute of Electrical Engineers ] auspices during the year, 1924. The articles have all been printed in the Journal [of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers] either in full or abridged form; they are published here in entirety with the discussions for each special group immediately following." On pages 412-422 we find "Certain Factors Affecting Telegraph Speed", one of 2 key Nyquist papers (the other being "Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory" from 1928) which Claude Shannon credited with being foundational works in information theory (along with a work by Hartley). Bibliographically, this paper appears in four places in the first year of publication. First, in the Journal of the AIEE, pages 124-130 (presumably an abridged text based on the page count and publication format), in February 1924. It was published two months later in the Bell System Technical Journal, and also printed separately in the Bell System Publications Monograph series (B-331, publication date unknown, but 1924). And finally, as here, the entire text published presumably at the end of 1924. This final and best publication [as offered here] includes a final page with discussion of a submitted letter about the paper and commentary by Nyquist, making this the most complete version of this first key paper we are aware of. "In an effort to improve the speed of data transmission over telegraph wires, Nyquist isolated two key factors - signal shaping and choice of codes...his work was important for presenting the first statement of a logarythmic law for communication and the first examination of the theoretical bounds for ideal codes for the transmission of information...In his 1948 paper 'A Mathematical theory of Communication', Claude Shannon credited Nyquist's paper as being one of the foundations of information theory." Origins of Cyberspace 343 (referring only to the 1924 Nyquist paper but offered in the Bell System Technical Journal). In our experience, the AIEE Journal and Transactions are far more difficult to find than the Bell System publications. A nice addition to any collection related to the History of Communication.

        S/W Porträt-Photographie. [ca. 14,7 x 10,3 cm].

[Dresden], E. Raupp, 1924. Prägestempel mit Datum. - Erwin Raupp (1855? \"Deutsches Familienblatt\"). Winnetou I, 1893; Weihnacht, 1897).

Vienna: Deutsch-Osterreichischer Verlag, 1924. First German Edition, preceding all others, this being the hardcover variant published simultaneously with a more common wrappered edition. INSCRIBED by Balazs in German on the half-title page to German expressionist writer Leonhard Frank: "Leonhard Frank / in herlzlicher Freundschaft / Béla Balázs / Berlin / 8.Feb.1927." A rare signature, and a strong association between two of Germany's most well-respected authors. Balázs' first book on cinema, which basically founded the German "film as a language" theory, which in turn yielded a profound influence on Eisenstein and Pudovkin. In a 1939 essay, he wrote,"the screenplay is an independent and a new form of literature," and championed the role of the screenwriter as the "auteur" of a film. In the years that would follow Balázs would write the screenplays for G.W. Pabst's "Die Dreigroschenoper (1931), Leni Riefenstahl's "Das Blaue Licht" (which he also co-directed, 1932), and Géza von Radványi's "It Happened in Europe" (1947). His early work included the librettos for Bartók's "The Wooden Prince" and Zoltán Kodály's "Bluebeard's Castle." In 1958, the Béla Balázs Prize was founded as an annual award to recognize achievements in cinematography. Very Good plus in illustrated, paper-covered boards.

Collection of Photographs of War Atrocities in China

1924 - (CHINA). Collection of Photographs of War Atrocities in China. [Canton and Shanghai], circa 1904-1924. Toned bromide and gelatin silver prints, unbound collection. $2500.Explicit collection of original browntone photographs taken during hostilities in China in the first two decades of the 20th century. Photographs are of the most graphic and horrible natureâ€" a documentary photo archive of the anarchy that was China. In the wake of the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, a power vacuum was created in China, with numerous warlords vying for power. These photographs document episodes within that struggle in the Nanjing area. Most of the photographs are of executions ordered at Shanghai by the “Nanking Warlord” Sun Ch’uan-fang. Sun, who was also known as the leader of the “League of Five Provinces,” commanded the northern provinces following the end of China’s imperial age. He defeated and killed the bandit leaders Ch’ang Wu, Liu Pa, and Hsu Shih Yi, at Huchuang, Lintsing, in January, 1924. Many photographs display the aftermath of the battle and the bodies of the executed bandits. Sun’s victory was short-lived, however, and he was overthrown in March 1927 by the Kuomintang- and Chinese Communist Party-led Northern Expedition of 1926-27. Most photographs with contemporary explanations on mount or on separate paper labels. Included in this collection are: 14 photographs were taken between 1900 and 1904. Accompanying them is a letter of provenance on State Department stationery indicating they came from the collection of Robert McWade, U.S. Consul to Canton from 1900-1904, via the U.S. Department of State. Department of State envelope included. The photographs are each 3 by 4 inches. Nine photographs of corpses, decapitations, flayings, and decapitated heads. Accompanying the photographs is a note saying that these pictures were enclosed with a letter dated April 6, 1927. The photographs are each 5 by 3 inches. One photograph, matted, 8 by 5-1/2 inches, showing the decapitated heads of three bandit leaders, One photograph, matted, 4 by 5-1/2 inches, showing the dead bodies of two of the bandit leaders, Ch’ang Wu and Liu Pa, dated January 15, 1924. One photograph, matted, 14-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches, showing the corpses of dozens of bandits who were killed in the battle against the three bandit leaders, also dated January 15, 1924. Some wear and fading to all photographs, with a few chips lost. Three photographs split. A unique and horrifying archive.
