CIVIL WAR TOKENS AND TRADESMEN';S STORE CARDS. A TENTATIVE LIST OF THE CIVIL WAR TOKENS, AND STORE CARDS ISSUED BY THE MERCHANTS OF THE UNITED STATES, AND USED AS MONEY DURING THE PERIOD FROM 1861 TO 1864

(Kutztown, Pennsylvania), 1924. Large 8vo [25 by 19 cm], original limp blue suede with overlapping or Yapp edges; upper cover lettered in gilt; speckled page edges. 289, (1) pages; 16 fine linen-backed photographic plates depicting 672 tokens with a number of corrected illustrations cut to size and pasted over the original token illustration, as issued; errata sheet tipped in; interleaved. Binding a trifle faded and worn at extremities, as often seen. Very good. The De Luxe Edition, limited to only 15 copies. Early in life Hetrich became a collector and, in his later years, selected Civil War tokens as his numismatic specialty, forming one of the finest collections of the time. Julius Guttag referred to him as "the first person systematically collecting these coins with whom I became acquainted." Their collaborative effort was the first substantial work on the topic ever published and it remained the standard work for close to fifty years. Rarely offered, the deluxe edition features sixteen actual photographs of tokens, which, in the regular edition, consist of mediocre halftones. One of the rarest twentieth century American numismatic books. The binding is notoriously fragile. The binding style is named after William Yapp, who designed and sold small bibles in the mid-nineteenth century in a limp binding whose overlapping flaps protected the page edges when carried in the owner's pocket. A MAGICIAN AMONG THE SPIRITS

New York and Londonn: Harper & Brothers, 1924 Octavo, bound in original slate gray cloth with gilt titles, 294 pp., including index.  Top edge stained yellow.  Stated first edition in the RARE ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER. Offsetting from old moisture damage, evidenced by a white residue mark running the width of the rear cover, approximately one inch from the top edge.  The damage mirrors a stain on the wrapper's rear panel and spine.  The stain, while noticeable, is less detracting than one might expect, not affecting the spine of the book itself, that is otherwise fine and bright. There is other minor soiling and wear to the dust wrapper, but it is unfaded and complete, lettered in navy blue against a pale turquoise ground.  '"Price $4.00" is printed on the inner flap along with a list of Harper publications on psychology and psychoanalysis.  The back flap and rear panel also serve as advertisements for current Harper publications.  The front cover of the dust wrapper, however, is fully dedicated to the promotion of Houdini, "...He dissects with an especially keen scalpel, he does not wield it as one determined to destroy, but rather a seeker after truth... Although he has the utmost respect for the honest belief of any person, he is the relentless enemy of deliberate fraud, and the account of his adventures in the investigation and detection of it forms a valuable chapter in the crusade for the truth."  Thus, the wrapper is indeed a marvelous historical document in its own right.  Not just a mere ornamental cover for a book, it stands as a publisher's clever harnessing of the public's endless fascination with the magician and man who was the Great Houdini.

San Diego 1924 - Oblong octavo. Brown leather over paper boards bound with metal brads, with the word "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front cover, measuring 7" x 11". A collection of 125 sepia toned photographs affixed to stiff blank black leaves. Various sizes ranging from 3.5" x 5.5" to 6" x 9.5", many with captions. A handful of photos are missing from pages, some wear and chipping to the black page mounts. The final four or five photos are a bit soiled, but overall the images are clear and sharp. Very good with some rubbing, and modest chips and tears. Included are 76 football photos, 16 military scenes, and 29 real photo postcards. Two photos of the owner of the album are affixed to the inside of the front cover, unidentified, except as a member of the 1925 team. One photo of the Marine mascot for the Devil Dogs carries the name of the Tierney Photo studio. There is a photo of the 1924 line and backfield members of the team, players identified in ink by their last names, a small photo of the 1924 team, annotated along the bottom of the photo with a typed list of player's names, and a large photo of the entire 1925 team posed in front of the goal posts. A photo of two teams in action on the field of play has been annotated in ink, "Marines vs Naval Training Station, score 61-0." Several other action photos of games are included, the Marines playing the Naval Hospital, the USS *California*, USS *Melville*, Riverside American Legion, etc. The military photos show drills and marching troops at the Marine Corps base in San Diego. Photo postcards include four images of the USS *Shenandoah* dirigible, three of the Panama Canal, and one each of the USS *Tennessee*, USS *Idaho*, USS *California*, and the USS *Oklahoma*. There is also a photographic rendering of the Marine Base in San Diego, "as it will be when complete." Lieutenant Elmer Hall, pictured in the 1924 team photo, played for the team between 1917 and 1925, and coached them from 1919-1940, including their first undefeated season in 1939. He helped define the football program at the base and Hall Field was named for him in 1956. A wonderful and detailed album of this military football team in California. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Horodisch & Marx, Berlin 1924 - 66 pages (Unpaginated. Original full vellum with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated title page. Robert Schumann's "Carnaval" is a collection of small piano pieces completed in 1835 which shows the composer intertwining his innermost personal world with his public life as pianist, music critic, and composer. The work was inspired by his infatuation with Ernestine von Fricken, a young pianist whom he met in Leipzig. This striking limited edition is delightfully illustrated throughout with 15 original signed etchings by Ernst Oppler* (including title page). Each of the 15 etchings is signed in pencil by the artist. Afterword by Oscar Bie, renown German art historian and publicist. One of 100 copies printed on handcraft pikeperch paper, of which this is No.34 (total edition of 420 copies). Binding very sound, boards slightly bowed, brown slipcase slightly soiled and scuffed, interior very clean with some light fox marks to free endpapers. Ernst Oppler (1867-1929) was a renown German Impressionist painter and etcher. He was a member of the Munich Secession, but became more active as one of the founders of the Berlin Secession, a group of artists who championed the new, Impressionist style.         European Life in Peking in the Early 1920s - Family Photograph Album.

1924.. Photograph album of 53 photographs (mostly silver gelatin) compiled as a gift. The photographs show scenes from the life of an American(?) family living in Peking in the 1920s as well as images taken of Chinese life. The many large and frequently beautifully composed images, show stylishly posed photographs of the family, pets and the Chinese servants with the house and courtyard in the background. There are also some quite poigniant photographs of Chinese children seen on their trips out. Two interior shots showing the manner in which the family lived with an attractive mix of Western furniture in Chinese decorated rooms. The man and his wife were clearly keen golfers 7 images showing members of Chinese golf clubs including the Paomachang Golf Club, Tientsin Golf Club and the Peking Golf and Country Club. The only two non-Chinese photographs in this album were taken at St Andrews on Scotland. The remaining often large 21 photographs in the album show scenes of the Western Hills, Peking and Chinese people including a "lower middle class funeral" and a close-up of a "country urchin" on the road 25 miles from Peking. Most photos are mounted one to a page and are captioned below in ink, one small snapshot loosely inserted. Some of the photos are printed on cream papers which were very fashionable at the time. Some occasional browning but largely very good. Inscribed to Mother and Isobel/With Love from/Ainslie/Christmas 1924. Oblong full leather album rubbed at extremities measures 26 x 34cm with string tie covers, lifting at corners. A very nice album indeed. .
