        Architettura futurista

Manuscript on paper, in English. Formula book for shoe hide preparation.

Endicott, Johnson City, NY Various sizes (12mo to folio). Bound volume and 10 single sheets (74 pp. used).. 1924–25 Shoe manufactury was the Endicott-Johnson Company's business and it did well until market forces, especially foreign factories with cheap labor, caused an international upheaval, not just in shoe factories, but all U.S. manufacturing. This manuscript book offers detailed descriptions of leather preparation techniques and dye formulas as scattered throughout the volume on a total of 74 pages. Also recorded here are charts indicating numbers of hides dyed, as well as which colors were produced on which days. The colors of the 1920s are less common today and their names and details will convey a great deal to fashion historians: Muskox, Esquimo, Velour, Coffee Elk, and Box Brownstone, to list a few. => Needless to say the dye color formulae were proprietary and consequently copies of them rare. The loose leaves are not excised from the book but are a mix of internal company documents and communications received from suppliers.Provenance: John Donnelly, whose name appears at the top of two loose leaf of technical tables laid in the bound volume.=> An important, suggestive resource for 1920s fashion research, industrial chemistry of the period, and American shoe manufacturing. A stationer's blank book with lined paper; boards covered with a faux leather that is separating from them; good condition. The ten separate leaves have been removed from volume and are housed separately in a Mylar sleeve.

        FAIRY TALES OF HANS ANDERSEN

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. The Beautiful First Edition, De Luxe, Limited and Numbered Issue, one of only 500 copies. SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR, KAY NIELSEN. With 12 exceptional tipped-in colour plates with captioned guards and full-page black & white illustrations as frontispieces to each tale, page headlines, numerous tale pieces and decorated initials all by Kay Nielsen. 4to, the publisher’s original deluxe vellum binding with beautiful and elaborate gilt pictorial designs on the upper cover and the spine, t.e.g. This exceptional copy retains the extremely scarce original paper backed cloth dustjacket lettered on the spine in gilt. 197 pp. + plates. A very handsome copy, the rare jacket complete, the fine gilt decorated vellum in excellent condition, the plates perfect, the text -block very fresh with only an occasional hint of the spotting normally seen, the jacket with some evidence of shelving or use having served its purpose well. FIRST EDITION DE LUXE, LIMITED TO 500 COPIES AND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST KAY NIELSEN, IN ITS VERY RARE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET. This collection of sixteen tales was initiated by Nielsen in 1912, though it was not published until 1924. Hodder & Stoughton, in an effort to promote sales after the war, began publishing gift books again with beautiful illustrations and bindings. This is one of there very best and in the scarcest and most desirable de Luxe format. Nielsen is regarded along with Rackham and Dulac as one of the triumvirate of masters of the illustrated gift book. This is no small achievement considering he only produced four such books in comparison to the dozens of titles produced by the other two gentlemen. Had he more time to enlarge his reputation he may well be considered the greatest master of the genre today. Although frequently compared to Rackham and Dulac his style is very different and altogether unique. Danish born and Parisian trained he was far more influenced by the Art Nouveau. His greatest influences as a student were the Japanese woodcuts of Hokusai and Utamaro and the black and white decorative line work of Aubrey Beardsley. Nielsen was among the most highly regarded illustrators of his day but produced only five books in total. He was lured away from the profession by Walt Disney, for whom he became an animator. These five books are more then enough however to secure his reputation for generations to come. Of the lasting appeal of Hans Andersen’s ‘Tales’ nothing more needs to be said.

PARADE'S END: Some Do Not ...; No More Parades; A Man Could Stand Up--; Last Post.

London:: Duckworth,. 1924 - 1928.. First edition of each of the four volumes comprising Ford's tetralogy, PARADE'S END. Set during WWI, mainly in England and on the western front, where Ford served as an officer in the Welch Regiment. Made into the 2012 BBC/HBO mini-series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall. John N. Gray hailed PARADE'S END as "possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English" and Mary Gordon labeled it as "quite simply, the best fictional treatment of war in the history of the novel." Ford's own stated purpose for creating this work was "the obviating of all future wars" (Wikipedia). Certainly a noble thought--and one we wish had come to pass. The first volume is ex-library with front free endpaper excised, handwritten "75" and several library stamps on front pastedown and rear endpaper, and spine toned and showing a faint "75" also. The other three are in very good condition with minor wear on corners and spine ends. All four volumes are lacking dust jackets. Still, the first book is rare and the other three are scarce in the first printings. .

        Afganistan.

Leipzig: Karl W. Hiersemann,, 1924. Bearbeitet von Oskar von Niedermayer. Quarto. Original cloth with Afghan rug style design in orange and brown, edges stained blue, yellow endpapers. 243 photogravure plates, and 3 full-page plans, sketches to the text. A little rubbed, and mildly sunned, pale browning, but otherwise very good. First and only edition. Uncommon, and superbly illustrated, account of Afghanistan. Niedermayer, was a German soldier-academic, and spy, who was spotted as a young officer-cadet in the 10th Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment (Erlangen). He studied under the philologist Georg Jacob at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg becoming proficient in English and Russian, passable Arabic and Turkish and modern Persian, and subsequently carried out a number of expeditions while on paid furlough - very much in the style of the British equivalent "shooting trips" - into Persia and India. "Extremely tough, resourceful and resourceful, he was, in the words of one contemporary, 'the kind of man who made the German army almost invoncible'" (Hopkirk, On Secret Service East of Constantinople, p.63) Culminating in an expedition into Afghanistan in 1915, to be jointly led by himself and the diplomat Werner Otto von Hentig, "They were to be Germany's 'Lawrences' - or as one British officer christened them 'Angles of Darkness', for their orders were to spread violence and disorder under the banner of Holy War, and to turn the people of the East against the British and their allies". The expedition reached Kabul, but despite Niedermayer's best efforts, the negotiations with Emir Habibullah had no decisive outcome. In May 1916 the team were ordered to withdraw from Afghanistan, and to work on attachment to the Ottoman Empire. This involved a dangerous return march through hostile Russian territory, which was accomplished on 1 September 1916. A wonderful visual record of Afghanistan in the early years of the twentieth century.
