Cartoon panel commemorating the first Opening Day of Yankee Stadium (April 18, 1923)

New York 1923 [New York, 1923]. 11-5/8 x 17 inches. Pen and ink on artist's board, each image captioned; inscribed (ses below), signed ("Thornton Fisher"), and dated ("April 26, 1923") by the artist. Matted and framed; fine . The cartoonist and illustrator Thornton Fisher drew several newspaper comics and panels in the 1910s, including 'Kitty Keys', 'Raising the Family', 'Betty's Brother Bobby' and 'The Marrying of Mary'. He also frequently treated baseball and sporting subjects, and this comic commemoration of the very first opening day at Yankee Stadium, is inscribed by Fisher to yet another legendary name associated with the Yankees: Harry M. Stevens, the famous concessionaire who introduced the hot dog at a baseball game at the Polo Grounds in 1907. When Yankee Stadium opened in 1923, Stevens was already a familiar figure to the players; in fact, Babe Ruth - a passionate lover of hot dogs - considered Stevens a second father. The centerpiece of the composite drawing shows the large figure of Babe Ruth, smiling and cocking his bat, with the caption beneath, "Babe opened the Yank Stadium by Poking a Home Run in the 4th, Scoring Dugan and Ward." Nowadays, of course, Yankee Stadium is known as "The House That Ruth Built." Fisher's inscription reads: "To my good friend Harry M Stevens from his sincerely and merrily / Thornton Fisher / April 26th / 1923" A priceless association, and a superb memento of the birth of a baseball legend

L'Ange du morbide (Conte). [In: La Revue sans titre. Organe de Défense des Jeunes. Deuxième èdition].

(Paris, 1923). Lex 8vo. Entire issue present, with the original printed wrappers. Some tears to spine and a bit of wear to extremities. A fagile publication. Ff. (6-7). [Entire issue: 8 ff.).. Sartre's extremely scarce first publication, in the also exceedingly scarce first number of the "La Revue sans titre", here in the second edition from the same year, which is of equal scarcity to the first. When Contat and Rybalka were making the bibliography of the writings of Sartre, they had great difficulty in finding the interesting rebellion publication "La Revue sans titre", which was - and is - not present in any French library. In fact, they finally borrowed a run of the magazine from M. Jean Gaulmier, professor of literature in Strasbourg, who possessed the only collection of the periodical that they could track down. The "L'Ange du morbid" had been reproduced in 1947 by Marc Beigbeder in his "L'Homme Sartre", but not quite in its entirety, and Contat and Rybalka thus printed the text again, for the second time since 1923, at the back of their Sartre-bibliography (1970) as the first part of the second appendix, which has the half-title "Textes retrouvés" (rediscovered texts). This interesting story which constitutes Sartre's first publication was published when he was merely 18 years old. In a strongly satirical tone Sartre tells the story of a mediocre professor's adventure with a young patient who has tuberculoses. The main character, the professor of a small provincial school, constitutes the pre-figuration of the highly unsympathetic character that occupies his following publications. The "Revue sans titre", of which we here have number one in its entirety, is also in itself interesting. The director of the publication is Charle Fraval, and the editorial secretary is Roger Letac. The publication claims to be "in defense of the Young", and on the front wrapper it states "Those who suffer from the mercantilism of literature, those whose talent is suppressed by the literary magnates, in short all the Young, have reason to read "REVUE SANS TITRE", the only organ in defense of the Young" (own translation, original: "Ceux qui souffrent du mercantilisme de la literature, ceux don't le talent est étouffé par les magnats des letters, tous les jeunes en un mot, ont intérêt à lire la "Revue sans titre" seul organe de defense des Jeunes."

        ICH UND DU

A near fine example in the exceedingly rare original plain dustwrapper printed black on the spine in very good condition with several modest chips. Slight darkening at the top edge of the upper cover, head & heel mildly bumped otherwise a very collectible copy of this Buber masterwork one of the most important books of the last century. Martin Buber, [1878-1965], Austrian-born Jewish Philosopher, Story Teller, Theologian - best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. Ich und Du, is today considered a landmark of twentieth-century intellectual history. Buber was strongly moved by the writings of Frederich Nietzsche and Ich und Du united the seminal existentialists themes of modern German thought with the traditional Judeo-Christian thinking. In Ich und Du, Buber presents the view of a world in which human beings can enter into relationships using their innermost complete self to form true partnerships beyond the notion and incorrect view that the universe is merely the object of our senses and experiences. "Buber argues for an ethic that does not use other people (or books, or trees, or God), and does not consider them objects of one's own personal experience. Instead, Buber writes, we must learn to consider everything around us as "You" speaking to "me," and requiring a response. Buber goes on to demonstrate how these interhuman meetings are a reflection of the human meeting with God. For Buber, the essence of biblical religion consists in the fact that -- regardless of the infinite abyss between them -- a dialogue between man and God is possible. Ecumenical in its appeal, Ich und Du nevertheless reflects the profound Talmudic tradition from which it has emerged". Excellent copy indeed. $3550. 1st Edition.

A Near Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (a push/mark to near the front joint on the spine edge, small, minor discoloration to upper left corner of front board -- otherwise Fine with the topstain quite fresh and slight rubbing to the bottom of the spine tail and to the bottoms of the front corners), in an about Very Good copy of the uncommon dust jacket (chipping to the spine head -- with a trace of loss to the "THE" in the title -- and to each corner and to the top of the rear flap, slight rubs, tiny edge tears, some color leak through to the interior of the front panel, and modest soil to the rear panel, some tape repairs to the interior), SIGNED BY JOHANNES V. JENSEN on the half title; Parts 3 and 4 of Jensen's Long Journey cycle originally consisting of 6 novels in Danish that then were published in English in 3 Volumes, with 2 Parts per Volume. (The book offered here is the second of the three volumes. Each Volume can be read independently. The "Cimbrians" were a Germanic or Celtic people, thought to have originated in Jutland --a/k/a "Cimbria" and thus-called throughout antiquity -- the peninsula which juts out in Northern Europe toward the rest of Scandinavia and which is comprised of mainland Denmark and a portion of Germany.) In the novels, Jensen develops his theory of evolution and covers the period from the Ice Age to Christopher Columbus. Considered by many to be the first great Danish author of the 20th Century, Johannes V. Jensen won the 1944 Nobel Prize in Literature for "the rare strength and fertility of his poetic imagination with which is combined an intellectual curiosity of wide scope and a bold, freshly creative style". (Jensen holds a Nominations record, being nominated 18 times before finally being awarded the Prize in 1944.) Considered his main work in prose, "The Long Journey" was Jensen's primary attempt to correct Germany's "misinterpretation and distortion of Darwinism" that led to its concept of Übermensch (i.e. "super man") and its disastrous consequences. In his work, Jensen believed that he had "...arrived at a new interpretation of the theory of evolution and its moral implications." Copies of this work in English translation are relatively uncommon. Signed copies of any of Jensen's works in any language are scarce, and signed copies in English translation are absolute hen's teeth. A Fine copy in a Very Good example of the uncommon dust jacket, SIGNED BY JOHANNES V. JENSEN. RARE. &

THE VEGETABLE OR FROM PRESIDENT TO POSTMAN

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. First Edition. Hardcover. Slight foxing to the endpapers. A Fine, bright copy in a Very Good, unrestored example of the uncommon dustwrapper that has a light stain at the bottom portion of the spine and an inch-deep chip at the top of the front cover obliterating most of the "T" in the word "The" . Fitzgerald's last book published before his masterpiece THE GREAT GATSBY which had a print run of 20,870 copies while this book had only 7,650 published. As with the better known GATSBY, this title, Fitzgerald's only published full-length play, also explores the American Dream but here with more comic intent and more pathetic results. The main character, Jerry Frost, strives to be President of the United States, if he is unable to make it as a postman. The quotation Fitzgerald places on the center of the title page sums it up: "Any man who doesn't want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in the White House, hasn't got as much to him as a good dog has -- he's nothing more or less than a vegetable."         Die polnischen Bauern 4 Bande [Unterzeichnet Band 1] [Chlopi or The Peasants or The Polish Farmers, 4 Volumes, Volume 1 Signed]

Jena: Eugen Diederichs Verlag, 1923. First German Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition in German, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth, Volume 1 SIGNED, DATED, and PLACED BY WLADYSLAW STANISLAW REYMONT. In this, his monumental and most important work, Reymont beautifully portrayed Polish village life against the backdrop of the Polish countryside, detailing its traditions, customs, and folklore. "[F]or his great national epic, The Peasants", Reymont won the 1924 Nobel Prize in Literature (over Thomas Mann, Maxim Gorky, and Thomas Hardy) . As Reymont was ill at the time the Prize would have been presented, his Prize was sent to him in France, where he was being treated. In lieu of a Presentation Speech, Per Hallström prepared an essay in which he stated, in part: "To sum up, this epic novel is characterized by an art so grand, so sure, so powerful, that we may predict a lasting value and rank for it, not only within Polish literature but also within the whole of that branch of imaginative writing which has here been given a distinctive and monumental shape." Volume 1 (Band 1) of this set has been signed (unterzeichnet) by Reymont on the front free endpaper as follows: "4.i.24 / Reymont / 52 Rue de Seine". The Hotel de Seine was Reymont's favorite place to stay in Paris and remains there to this day. We presume that he stayed there in 1924 at or near the time of his illness. Signed copies of any of Reymont's works in any language are extraordinarily scarce. A Very Good copy of Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont's most important work and the work for which he won the Nobel Prize in Literature, SIGNED, DATED, and PLACED BY WLADYSLAW STANISLAW REYMONT IN VOLUME 1. RARE INDEED.
