        [College Yearbook]: The 1923 Columbian

      Senior Class of Columbia College New York: Senior Class of Columbia College. (1923). First. First and only edition. Bookplate, light edgewear to the boards and the front hinge weakening, but a sound, very good copy. 1923 Columbia Yearbook. Gehrig initially could not play intercollegiate baseball for Columbia because he had played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year, unaware that doing so jeopardized his eligibility to play any collegiate sport. Gehrig was ruled eligible to play on the Lions' football team and was a standout fullback and tackle. He later gained baseball eligibility and joined the Lions on that squad as well. But in this yearbook he is featured in photographs and accounts of his days on the football team over the 1922 season. Gehrig is pictured at least twice and is lauded for his "consistent line-plunging," although his efforts could not prevent the season from being "an unmitigated failure, with few, if any, redeeming qualities." Other notables pictured include the authors Corey Ford and Henry Morton Robinson, and Walter Koppisch, Gehrig's teammate, who was later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. .

      Charles Scribner's Sons New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1923. First. First edition. Spine lettering dull, a very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. For reasons unknown to us, this copy is Inscribed by Harold H. Knerr, probably the foremost illustrator of the Katzenjammer Kids: "With kindest wishes & best wishes from yours sincerely, Harold H. Knerr." Beneath his inscription, Knerr has drawn his two greatest creations, the mischievous Katzenjammer Kids, Hans and Fritz. Originally created by Rudolph Dirks in 1897, and based on the "Max und Moritz" cartoon pranksters and bad boys created by German artist Wilhelm Busch. Knerr took over the cartoon in 1914, after a lawsuit between the Hearst and Pulitzer papers, and continued until his death in 1949, and created the version of the Katzenjammers best known today. A pleasing little inscription drawing connecting the "bad boy" comic icons to the infant terrible of the 1920s literary world. Fitzgerald's only play. .

A very nice and clean copy. 137, (3) pp.. First edition of Buber's seminal work, the groundbreaking philosophical essay, which is considered the cause of a Copernican revolution in theology, due to its reaction against a mainly scientific approach to religion. Buber's religious philosophy of dialogue as presented in "Ich und Du" has been a great influence, not only on the fields of philosophy and religion, the study of which he set out to change, or at least give a new approach to, but also on modern therapy. The theories presented in the work are remarkably in accordance with recent views on different forms of human development, which often refer to Buber's theory on the relationship between the self and being. At the time this work was published, Buber's philosophy constituted a radical departure from the psychoanalytic approach to the individual as it was then comprehended.By contrasting the "I-You" ("Ich-Du") -relation (the dialogue) with the "I-It" ("Ich-Es") - relation (the monologue), Buber presents a double "I" of man, and with the "I-You"-relationship he establishes the possibility of man to enter into a true and sincere relationship with others, -and - in spite of the eternal abyss between the two - the "I-You"-relation ultimately establishes the relationship (i.e. the talk or meeting, "Gespräch") between man and God; according to Buber this is the essence of Biblical religion. The meeting with the other person and with the world (which is also governed by an "I-You"-relation) is in fact essentially a reflection of man's meeting with God.The work was later edited by Buber, but he never wished to change it substantially, and the text has remained more or less the same as that of the first edition. "Ich und Du" has been translated into numerous languages, and also in the English-speaking world the book has been very influential, in spite of the difficulties with translating "Du" into English. The work is primarily known as "I and Thou", though the later translation "I and You" might be more appropriate.The Austrian-Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber (1878-1965), is mainly known to the Western world as the author of the work "Ich und Du". Inspired by the reading of Kant, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche Buber began studying philosophy in Vienna in 1896. In 1898 he joined the Zionist movement, regarding it as destined to social and spiritual enrichment. In 1930 he became honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt, but he resigned as soon as Hitler came to power in 1933. In 1935 he founded the "Central Office for Jewish Adult Education", which played an important role in German learning in the 1930'ies, since the German government had forbidden Jews to attend public education. In 1938, however, Buber had to leave Germany, and he settled in Jerusalem, where he became professor at the Hebrew University. After the Second World War he received several prominent prizes

Wittgenstein's copy, with his own original signed owner's inscription in pencil to front free end-paper: "Von Tommy zu/ Weinachten 1931/ Ludwig Wittgenstein". For the academic year 1932, Wittgenstein had been granted leave from his official teaching engagements at Cambridge, in order to concentrate on his own work. He did, however, wish to give private unpaid discussion classes for interested students, and did so, in his rooms at Whewells Court. These discussion classes became famous, and the lectures that he gave that year even more so. As is evident from the present copy of Boehme's Works, Wittgenstein had been given this book (by "Tommy" - i.e. Tommy Stonborough (1906-1986), his nephew, being the oldest son of his sister Margarete Stonborough-Wittgenstein) for Christmas 1931. Having in his youth been fascinated by the "mystics", but for many years not worked on them, Wittgenstein, in his Cambridge lectures, commencing in the early 1930'ies (after Christmas 1931) revives certain aspects of the "Teutonick philosophy" that Böhme represents, finding resonance with many of his young disciples. Wittgenstein, as Schopenhauer (and Wittgenstein perhaps originally inspired by Schopenhauer's interest), was fascinated by the tradition of the mystics, going back to Hildegard von Bingen, Nicolaus von Cusa, Paracelsus, and probably most importantly Jacob Böhme, and through him the teachings of Bruno, which influenced his philosophy a great deal. Jacob Böhme (or Boehme, in English) was a German mystic, born in the East German town of Goerlitz in 1575 (died in 1624). He received almost no education and made his living as a shoemaker (thus also known as "The Shoemaker of Goerlitz"), but was early on interested in the works of Paracelsus, the Kabbala, and the Hermetic tradition. He is most famous for his unfinished main work "Aurora" (also present in the present copy of his Works), which attracted a circle of followers. He came into conflict with the church on several occasions, was banned from writing and later banished from his home. He became hugely influential within German romanticism, and both Hegel, Baader, and Schelling were influenced by him. He has been given philosophical revivals at frequent intervals, through both Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Bergson, Heidegger, Buber, and Wittgenstein.Wittgenstein's nephew, Thomas Stonborough, who gave him the present copy of Boehme's Works had studied psychology under Charlotte Bühler (and possibly here himself encountered the writings of Böhme, as e.g. Jung was heavily influenced by him and gives many references to him in his works). He was a silent partner of Bank Shields & Co in New York and for a period of time assistant at Columbia University. He had quite a bit to do with his famous uncle and later inherited the "Wittgenstein-House" in Kundmanngasse in Wien, which he sold in 1971. Wittgenstein handed over some of his belongings, including a number of his books, to his life-long friend Ludwig Hänsel. Among these belongings was the present copy of Böhme's Works given to him by his nephew. Wittgenstein did not have many close friends, but the closest -together with Rudolph Koder- was Luwig Hänsel, who was a high-school teacher of German and literature. Hänsel and Wittgenstein, who befriended each other in 1918 while being war prisoners in Monte Casino, also remained close friends throughout their lives

Publisher's dark blue cloth, gilt lettered to spines, bookplate of Leonie Leslie to front pastedown of the first volume and signed and dated (July 1923) by the Author to the second free endpaper of the same, two different inscriptions to the endpapers of volumes IV and VI, the volumes housed in a set of three recent bespoke dark blue half morocco clamshell boxes, gilt lettered direct to spines. Numerous maps, charts and illustrations. Binding of Volume II slightly rubbed, a minor blemish to the spine of the third book box, a very good set. Lady Leonie Leslie was Churchill's aunt, she was the sister of Jennie, later Lady Randolph Churchill. Whilst the volume is not inscribed to her, it is a nice family association nonetheless. The "second edition" was published the same month as the first, it is referred to as the second impression in later issues.

La fotografia ritrae lo scultore al centro di un nutrito gruppo di persone; al margine inferiore la scritta 'Rue Dumont-d'Urville, Paris', la firma autografa dell'artista, ed un'altra firma (probabilmente quella del fotografo). La lettera (quattro facciate di cm 11,5 x 7,5) è scritta sulle due facciate interne per 24 righe più la firma autografa. La prima facciata (bianca) è incollata al foglio, e la quarta reca l'indirizzo e l'affrancatura. Il biglietto è indirizzato alle signore Stettler (Marthe) e Danenberg (Alice), co-direttrici dell'Académie de la Grande Chaumière, alla quale Bourdelle insegnò a partire dal 1909. Si aggiungono un'altra ritratto fotografico originale dello scultore, di cm 18 x 13 (angolo inf. sin. reincollato); una cartolina postale che lo ritrae attorniato da un gruppo di giovani (suoi allievi, probabilmente); ed il catalogo della mostra 'Bourdelle inconnu. Antoine Bourdelle si avvicinò alla scultura sin da piccolo, nello studio del padre artigiano scultore di legno, e all'età di quindici anni ricevette una borsa di studio per l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Toulouse. A partire dal 1884 è allievo di Alexandre Falguière alla Scuola di Belle Arti di Parigi, e dal 1893 assistente pratico del suo amico e fervente difensore Auguste Rodin, con il quale collaborerà per quindici anni. La sua prima mostra personale, nel 1905, ottiene un grande successo. Bourdelle si allontana dallo stile del maestro, muovendo in direzione della scultura antica e medievale. Parallelamente alla creazione delle sue opere insegna all'Académie de la Grande Chaumière (Montparnasse), dove avrà allievi del calibro di Alberto Giacometti, Aristide Maillol, René Iché, Germaine Richier. Riconosciuto dopo la morte del maestro Rodin come uno dei più importanti scultori francesi, sarà creatore e vice presidente del Salon des Tuileries, e nel 1924 sarà nominato Commandeur de l'Ordre de la Légion d'honneur.       London, Heinemann1923 3rd edition. Hardback ( 7 1/2" x 10" ). No dustwrapper. Beige cloth covers with lovely gilt decoration and titles on front cover and spine. Ends of spine are just very slightly bumped but corners are good and sharp. Corner has been removed at top of blank endpaper ( probably a name). No inscription or name. Very clean and tight. No foxing or fingermarks. There are 44 SUPERB full-page, mounted colour illustrations, all with captioned tissue-guards. Has clear, removable protective covering. One of Arthur Rackham's more beautiful books. A lovely copy.VG+

Fine./No Dust Jacket. 411 pages. 21 x 15 1/2 cm. Six full-page woodcut plates by Schmied colored in pochoir, and heightened in silver and gilt, plus a host of woodcut chapter heading designs. Limited edition, copy 479 of 850 on Velin de pur Chiffon des Papeteries de Voiron. Schmied is considered to be one of the finest wood engravers of the Art Deco period: the illustrations herein testify to his craft. MONOD 4695. Text in French. Partly unopened, bright, very clean copy.
