The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings, in dust jackets

Here is a full British first edition set of Winston Churchill's The World Crisis published between 1923 and 1931. This is a near-fine+, collector-grade, first printing set with the exceedingly rare first printing dust jackets. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing. weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a unique position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, but after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, he was scapegoated by his peers, betrayed by Asquith, and hounded by the Conservatives. Churchill would go from the Cabinet to the Front, serving as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. By the war's end, Churchill was exonerated by the Dardanelles Commission and rejoined the Government. History would confirm the soundness of Churchill's conception, and that failure accrued to deviation and poor execution by others. But these facts did Churchill no good at the time and the stigma of the Dardanelles would linger. Churchill began his history of the First World War compelled, in part, to clear his name and reputation. But the six volume masterwork he produced far exceeded its original conception. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. The dust jackets are not only scarce, but notoriously brittle, particularly those for the 1916-1918 and Eastern Front volumes. The volumes comprising this set are uniformly excellent. All six feature square, clean, and tight bindings with bright gilt and only trivial shelf wear. Spotting is mild, confined to the text block edges except for occasional intrusions into the Volume I prelims and the text of volume four. The sole previous ownership marking in the entire set is an inked name dated "May 1923" in volume I. The dust jackets vary considerably in condition, from very good to poor. All dust jackets are first printing. The jackets for 1911-1914, 1915, and the Aftermath suffer only small losses at the spine ends, though each shows some spine toning, particularly 1911-1914. Markings are minimal, confined to a two inch pencil squiggle to a blank portion of the 1915 dust jacket rear face and a price reduction penciled faintly above the original price on the 1911-1914 spine. PLEASE NOTE that the jackets for both 1916-1918 volumes and The Eastern Front have considerable losses. All three have fragmented at the flap and spine hinges, retaining the majority of the dust jacket faces and flaps, but with considerable losses at the extremities of the remaining pieces. The dust jackets for both 1916-1918 volumes lack their original spines, and have been supplied with photocopy reproductions of original spines laid beneath the original jacket pieces. 1916-1918 Part II also has some old cello tape at the flap folds. The Eastern front retains roughly a third of its original dust jacket spine, which is laid over a photocopy of an original spine. Jacketed sets are a rare prize for Churchill collectors, typically commanding prices well into five figures. While three of the six dust jackets in this set have considerable flaws and losses, any first edition World Crisis dust jackets are a rarity and this full set compensates dust jacket condition with comparatively modest pricing. All six dust jackets have been carefully fitted with removable, archival clear covers with acid-free paper backing. Additional images and details available upon request. This large set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: A69.2(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A31(ab), Langworth p.105.

Bound in their original red-and-black-printed paper wrappers. Wrappers show occasional light soiling but are generally clean. Volume 2 has a closed tear at the crown. An attractive copy of the rare signed limited edition of Weber's classic work on Japanese and Chinese culture, religion and art. It provides information about famous sites in both countries, as well as information about historical and legendary personages; describes manners and customs, festivals and religious practices; and provides biographies, signatures and other distinguishing marks of the painters, sculptors, engravers, ceramists, and other artists and craftsmen. It also offers summaries of the Japanese and Chinese tales and legends that have inspired the artists of the two countries in their works and in the ornamentation of furniture and other objects.

The Ship that Sailed to Mars

George G Harrap 1923. ISBN or SBN Number: n/a. First edition, English issue of this maginficently illustrated work by Timlin.George G Harrap published this huge and magnificent volume in November 1923, finely bound in half vellum richly decorated in gilt. The book contains superb color plates by the artist, alternated throughout with 48 leaves adorned with his fine calligraphic and poetic text. These pieces of art were all mounted by hand on gray matte paper, reminiscent of Harrap's best pre-war editions de luxe. Timlin's fantasy is a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland. His watercolors equal the best work of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson (Dalby, 102). The book's strength [rests] on its exotic descriptions and beautiful illustrations (Clute & Grant, 949-50). A must for the serious bibliophile 48 pp text with 48 plates, In grey boards with vellum spine which richly decorated with gilt. There is some wear to extremities of the corners, but generally the book is clean and the gilt is bright. It is contained in a made to order solander box. All books are shipped from South Africa. We will email with price quote for shipping.

        Zur Affinen Feldtheorie. {Relativity]

Berlin: Berlin: Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, XVIII, 1923 Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Zur affinen Feldtheorie. Offprint from Sitzungsberichten der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 1923. XVIII. 8vo.,4, [137-140] First edition. Orange wrappers. A fine fresh copy in the rare off-print form marked with an asterisk by Weil, denoting a major paper ("Sonderabdruck") & deemed of sufficient interest that a translation was published in Nature Magazine. "Einstein's attempts to formulate a unified field theory [the theoretical framework to account for the fundamental forces of nature.] stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the general relativity theory, which did not adequately incorporate the electromagnetic field into the geometry of space-time". Einstein's first investigation of Weyl's ideas, published in the present paper which Weyl had begun working on in 1918. Weyl was investigating the possibility of constructing a unified field theory preserving the dimensionality of space-time while formally altering its geometry, making it a special case of the class known as affine geometries*. However Einstein later rejected Weyl's theory. "Weil No. 132*; Schilpp--Shields No. 171; Alicke No.113; Norman Library 698; Boni 141. *Affine Geometry is not concerned with the notions of circle, angle and distance. It's a known dictum that in Affine Geometry all triangles are the same. In this context, the word affine was first used by Euler (affinis). In modern parlance, Affine Geometry is a study of properties of geometric objects that remain invariant under affine transformations (mappings). Affine transformations preserve collinearity of points: if three points belong to the same straight line, their images under affine transformations also belong to the same line and, in addition, the middle point remains between the other two points." The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe.". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination)." . First Thus.
