        Ich und Du

Im Insel-Verlag zu Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany/ Deutschland 1923 - 138 pp. A rare, hard-to-find gem! Solidly bound copy with minimal external wear, crisp pages and clean text. Small scruff on spine. Very mild foxing on page edges. A near fine example. No dj. Text in German. First edition of Buber's seminal work, the groundbreaking philosophical essay, which is considered the cause of a Copernican revolution in theology, due to its reaction against a mainly scientific approach to religion. Buber's religious philosophy of dialogue as presented in "Ich und Du" has been a great influence, not only on the fields of philosophy and religion, the study of which he set out to change, or at least give a new approach to, but also on modern therapy. The theories presented in the work are remarkably in accordance with recent views on different forms of human development, which often refer to Buber's theory on the relationship between the self and being. At the time this work was published, Buber's philosophy constituted a radical departure from the psychoanalytic approach to the individual as it was then comprehended.By contrasting the "I-You" ("Ich-Du") -relation (the dialogue) with the "I-It" ("Ich-Es") - relation (the monologue), Buber presents a double "I" of man, and with the "I-You"-relationship he establishes the possibility of man to enter into a true and sincere relationship with others, -and - in spite of the eternal abyss between the two - the "I-You"-relation ultimately establishes the relationship (i.e. the talk or meeting, "Gespräch") between man and God; according to Buber this is the essence of Biblical religion. The meeting with the other person and with the world (which is also governed by an "I-You"-relation) is in fact essentially a reflection of man's meeting with God.The work was later edited by Buber, but he never wished to change it substantially, and the text has remained more or less the same as that of the first edition. "Ich und Du" has been translated into numerous languages, and also in the English-speaking world the book has been very influential, in spite of the difficulties with translating "Du" into English. The work is primarily known as "I and Thou", though the later translation "I and You" might be more appropriate. The Austrian-Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber (1878-1965), is mainly known to the Western world as the author of the work "Ich und Du". Inspired by the reading of Kant, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche Buber began studying philosophy in Vienna in 1896. In 1898 he joined the Zionist movement, regarding it as destined to social and spiritual enrichment. In 1930 he became honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt, but he resigned as soon as Hitler came to power in 1933. In 1935 he founded the "Central Office for Jewish Adult Education", which played an important role in German learning in the 1930'ies, since the German government had forbidden Jews to attend public education. In 1938, however, Buber had to leave Germany, and he settled in Jerusalem, where he became professor at the Hebrew University. After the Second World War he received several prominent prizes. A very collectible copy of this Buber masterwork one of the most important books of the last century. Martin Buber, [1878-1965], Austrian-born Jewish Philosopher, Story Teller, Theologian - best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. Ich und Du, is today considered a landmark of twentieth-century intellectual history. Buber was strongly moved by the writings of Frederich Nietzsche and Ich und Du united the seminal existentialists themes of modern German thought with the traditional Judeo-Christian thinking. In Ich und Du, Buber presents the view of a world in which human beings can enter into relationships using their innermost complete self to form true partnerships beyond the notion and incorrect view that the universe is merely the object of our senses and experiences.         Sous le Signe du Rossignol

Paris: L'Édition D'Art H. Piazza , 1923. - One of 150 Copies With an Extra Suite of Plates[NIELSEN, Kay, illustrator]. JACQUES, Henry. Sous le Signe du Rossignol. Conte de Henry Jacques. Illustré par Kay Nielsen.Paris: L'Édition D'Art H. Piazza, 1923. First edition, limited to 150 copies with extra suite of plates, out of a total edition of 1500, this being copy no. 60. Quarto (12 x 9 1/8 in; 305 x 231 mm). 102 pp. Nineteen mounted color plates, with the extra suite of loose color plates (in the original glassine wrapper) mounted for framing and display loosely inserted at back. Twelve black & white vignette drawings and six initial letters decorated in red.Publisher's original card wrappers with Nielsen designs to front and rear covers. A fine copy. Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen’s designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen’s objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story’s emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).French poet and novelist, journalist, sailor, and musicologist Henry Jacques (1886-1973) is primarily known for La Symphonie Héroïque. Poèmes (1921); Le voyageur de nuit (1922); Sous le signe du rossignol (Under the Sign of the Nightingale, 1923), a tale for children; Jean-François de Nantes, bois en couleurs d'Antral (1928); and Cap Horn. THE LIMITED PATRON’S DELUXE EDITION of Dawson’s monumental work on California birds. The author gives popular yet comprehensive descriptions of 580 species, their eggs and their habitats. Most impressively however he has lavishly illustrated them; the colourplates and drawings are chiefly by Major Allan Brooks, the photogravures and duotones are chiefly by Donald Dickey, Wright M. Pierce, William Finley and Dawson himself. This beautiful Patron’s edition was available by subscription only and involved the efforts of five major printers plus the Leather Products and Finishing Company of Los Angeles. Included with the set is W. Lee Chambers’ Bibliographic Notes on Dawson’s Birds of California, reprinted from the THE CONDOR (Vol XLI, number 6, 1939) which includes eight additional illustrations.

"Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" [in The Dial -- Volume LXXV, Number 1, July 1923]

Greenwich, Connecticut: The Dial Publishing Company. 1923. First. Magazine. Small quarto. 104pp. Perfectbound wrappers. Typical wear to the yapped edges with a small chip at the heel of the spine, ex-library stamps on the front wrap, and dampstaining along the foredge, very good. This issue includes "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" by Virginia Woolf, the first in a series of short stories featuring her most well-known literary creation. The character had previously appeared in Woolf's first book, The Voyage Out, but was revisited some years later by the author in the stories and novel. "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" was intended to be the first chapter of the 1925 novel, Mrs. Dalloway, originally planned as a series of distinctly separate stories. Woolf chose instead to publish the story on its own and retain elements for the novel, which was ultimately a more unified narrative than her initial plan allowed. .

Gli Adornatori del Libro in Italia (Volumes 1 to 3)

Impreso coil Tipi della Scuola D'Arte Tipografica del Comune del Bologna 1923-1926, Bologna - Survey of then modern book and bookplate illustration in Italy. This is a continuous, but not complete, run of 9 volume series that ran into the early 1930s, but each issue does standalone and generally speaking can only be found individually. Offered here as a set of three. Folio sized, 14 by 10 inches, or 36 by 26 cm. Vol I has 112 plates, with 328 designs, and was one of a limited edition of 850 copies. Vol II, issued two years later, has 220 plates with 420 designs and was a limited edition of 500. Volume III, issued in 1925 to 1926, with 240 plates (plates 114 to 117 not present but no evidence they ever were present). Limited edition of 850. Plates are not only lovely in and of themselves and a carefully curated cross-section of Italian book art of the day, but also a fine overview of Italian aesthetics then, reacting to the over-ripeness of the nineteenth century with a more pared down, even brutal style at times, that is modernism, whether art deco or even more abstract. Not that there weren't still manifest the more literal historicisms -- one should not think there was a monolithic approach to all this. Bookplate of Augustus Carolus Becker who is probably the same person who ran a private press in Brooklyn. Red cloth binding in original wrappers. Cloth has some stains, soilage and shelfwear but remain presentable. All text blocks are tight and leaves are generally clean. Other than possible missing 4 plates in vol 3, interior-wise a fine set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The World Crisis, full set of U.S. first editions inscribed and dated by Churchill

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1923 - This is a full, U.S. first edition set of Churchill's history of the First World War, inscribed and dated in the fifth volume, The Aftermath. Five volumes are first edition, first printing, while the inscribed volume is the first edition, third printing, published in September 1929, six months after the first. The inscription, inked in black in three lines on the first free endpaper, reads: "Inscribed by | Winston S. Churchill | Feb. 1932". In February of 1932, Churchill was traveling in the United States on a lucrative and successful lecture tour. He spoke in many cities throughout the month before departing for England on 11 March aboard the ocean liner Majestic. This volume was undoubtedly inscribed during the tour. Publisher Charles Scribner wrote to Churchill on the day of his departure "I sincerely hope that you made no mistake in trusting your books to us. We will continue to back them until they come into their own." Churchill's books most certainly did come into their own. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Collectors will note that for The World Crisis, the U.S. is the true first edition, as initial U.S. publication preceded the British. The inscribed volume is in very good condition. The binding is square and clean with bright gilt. We note minor wear at the spine ends and lower corners. The spine is slightly sunned, more noticeably at the center below the author's name, but nonetheless retains respectable color and bright gilt. The contents are clean and with no spotting and no inscriptions save the one by the author. The binding is slightly shaken, with a cosmetic gutter split at the title page, but the mull beneath remains firmly attached and the binding fully intact. The five first edition, first printing books comprising the rest of this set are in very good to near-fine condition with minor flaws and wear. The contents are uniformly clean, tight, and unusually bright for paper that is prone to age-yellowing. There is no spotting. There are no previous ownership marks save for a bookplate on the pastedown of The Unknown War. The boards are all clean and bright with only minor scuffing or blemishes. Spine presentation shows only mild sunning. Even the notoriously fade-prone Volume I spine retains good color, although the gilt has darkened as is normal for this volume. Of note, the folding map at p.388 of The Unknown War is properly folded with no tears; there is just some wear to the leading edge where it protrudes slightly from the text block.         The Waste Land

Boni and Liveright, New York 1923 - First edition, second impression, one of 1000 numbered copies of Eliot's signal work, an echo chamber of ancient and modern voices overheard in London between the wars: "I will show you something different from either / Your shadow at morning striding behind you / Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you; / I will show you fear in a handful of dust." As Eliot's bibliographer Donald Gallup notes, this stated "Second Edition" is more accurately a second impression, printed from the same setting of type as the first. This copy agrees with later copies of the first impression print run on all points, and bears the pencilled ownership signature of the great American photographer Walker Evans, with the note "New York/March, 1926" in his hand. Evans originally intended to be a writer, dropping out of Williams College to study in Paris, where he gazed, starstruck, at James Joyce across the aisles of Shakespeare and Company. T.S. Eliot was another of the living writers Evans most admired. In the first photographs Evans ever published, appearing in Creative Arts in 1930, he captioned the final image "Hurry up please, it's time," the insistent last call of Eliot's bartender in Part II of The Waste Land. (Trachtenberg, 241). Gallup A6b. An excellent copy, a direct link between two of the most important American modernists. Octavo, original black cloth with gilt lettering. A few tiny marks to spine, lightest wear to corners and edges. No dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed ("Joseph Conrad"), to "My dear Veronica" [Wedgwood]

1923. [a long amusing letter to a child] Two full pages (both sides of a sheet of "Oswalds, Bishopsbourne, Kent" stationery, including additional writing in one margin). Dated "31. Mch. [19]23." Joseph Conrad did not write very many letters to children. He also did not write many letters that could be termed "amusing" or "jocular" -- especially toward the end of his life. Yet here it is: a lengthy, amusing letter to a child, written just 16 months before he died. The text of the letter reads:~What a traveller you are -- and, incidentally what a nice person, to write to me such an interesting letter! Yes, Ajaccio is all right and Corsica is lovely and I have admired it -- for three months on end; which is a sufficient tribute, I think. I, too, have been oppressed, buried under, smothered and choked by the mimosas thrown into the carriage by a driver -- by many drivers. They WILL do it. They are all mad -- you know. One of them, once, left his horses and trap (where my wife and I were sitting) within about three inches from the edge of a dreadful precipice in order to climb a mimosa tree. He sat there for (I think) one hour, like a sort of devastating bird, showering broken branches on the ground below. My prayers nor my threats could induce him to come back to his horses. I offered him at last all the money I had in my pocket, my watch and chain, any sum that I (a stranger) could borrow in Corsica (which is a poor country). He remained deaf. He did not think the offer good enough I suppose. The mimosa shook and cracked non-pathetically. The horses dozed. The precipice yawned (they always do), and I admired the Corsican scenery but wished myself back in England -- on Romney Marsh for preference. Yes, Corsica is a lovely island, but dangerous -- because of its drivers who are a public terror; and thus worse than the vendettas which are private affairs. Did Cook's people show you a vendetta? I haven't seen one but I saw a bandit. He was quite tame. He took a cigarette from my hand most delicately.~Directly I heard you were taking your mother to Constantinople I began to think what I should do if the Turks captured you as they always have done in the 18th century tales. I would have had to go (of course with your father's permission) to rescue you from the hands of the Infidels. So I formed a plan. An excellent plan -- but I cannot tell you of it now. It is not because I am lazy but because I am going to America in three weeks time and the plan would take several months to describe properly. Give my love to your Mother and your Father; and please, my dear, keep a little corner in your heart for your old and frivolous friend. Joseph Conrad.~Cicely Veronica Wedgwood (1910-1997) was the then-12-year-old daughter of Conrad's dear friends Iris and Ralph Wedgwood, to whom Conrad had dedicated WITHIN THE TIDES (also, Ralph would soon serve as co-executor of Conrad's estate). Clearly, during the Wedgwood family's "Cook's Tour" of Corsica, young Veronica had written Conrad a letter, knowing from her parents that Conrad and his wife had also spent some time there. (Veronica would subsequently go on to become one of the great historians of her generation; four decades later she would both be made a Dame and be awarded the Order of Merit.)~The letter is in fine condition, other than the creases from initial mailing.

VYSOKE TATRY [Hand-Illuminated Travel Album of Souvenir Post Cards and Original Photographs of the Tatry Mountain Region of Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary]

np [Czechoslovakia?], (ca. 1923). Hardcover. Fine. Oblong folio; 12" x 16.5" approx. String-tied quarter-leather commercial album with 40 full-color, hand-illuminated (most likely gouache) pages on 20 thick paper leaves, each interleaved with spider-web design tissue. Featuring 123 mounted original postcards and photographs (most approx. 3.5" x 5.5"), each numbered and keyed to a calligraphic index of captions on verso of collaged and painted title page. Touches of wear to pages and tissue, a few bumps to boards. Else generally fine; housed in custom archival linen clamshell box. Though ostensibly a travel album documenting an extensive tour through the Vysoke Tatry mountain range, much more a singularly striking work of folk art featuring extensive hand-painted illuminated backgrounds and borders. The artist, here unnamed but presumably identified by the monogrammed and dated painting that ends this album, has filled each page and framed each image with elaborately marbled and intricately detailed elements. These expert illuminations, which seem influenced to some extent by Art Nouveau, exhibit a brilliant palette and a decidedly modern sense of de- sign. A whirlwind of effects - from geological patterns that evoke the mountainous terrain of the journey, to pointillist enameling reminiscent of matryoshkas, and abstract geometrics that call to mind the burgeoning avant garde - all carefully arranged to accentuate colors, subjects, and other details in the mounted photos and postcards. Quite simply one of the most impressive and beautiful vernacular books we've handled. Virtuosic.
