Lpz., J. C. Hinrichs 1923 [recte 1924].. 2 Bll., 40 S. (Heft) sowie 6 lose Tafeln. Imperial-Folio. 26. März 1927). - Sehr gut erhaltene Ausgabe. - Selten. - We accept all main credit cards. - Wir akzeptieren Kreditkarten. - *** 82 Jahre Buchhandlung und Antiquariat Arno Adler (1932-2014) ***

        La Femme au Dix-Huiti?me Si?cle

Paris - Ernest Flammarion, 1923. Paris - Ernest Flammarion, 1923 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A history of women in the eighteenth century from the Goncourt brothers. In French. The Goncourt brothers, (182296) and Jules de Goncourt (183070), both French naturalism writers who as collaborative sibling authors, were inseparable in life. They formed a partnership that is possibly unique in literary history. Not only did they write all their books together, they did not spend more than a day apart in their adult lives, until they were finally parted by Jules's death in 1870. They are known for their literary work and for their diaries, which offer a intimate view into the French literary society of the later 19th century. With engraved monochrome frontispieces of scenes from eighteenth-century life. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In half-morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally smart, with just a couple of marks to the boards and some light wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Bookplate of Henry Bagge to front pastedowns. Pages are browned, but mainly clean with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

[Original Portrait Photograph, Signed by Joseph Conrad, and Inscribed by Jessie Conrad]

Glasgow: T. & R. Annan & Sons, [ca. 1923.. Glasgow: T. & R. Annan & Sons, [ca. 1923.. Original silver print photograph, with sepia tone, 6 5/8 x 4 5/8" (170 x 116 mm). On 10.5 x 7.5" (265 x 190mm) stiff card mount, with gilt embossed seal of T. & R. Annan & Sons. Fine. A superb example of one of the photographs taken of Conrad in 1923 in his rooms at the St. Enoch Hotel, Glasgow, prior to setting sail for the U.S. Of the sequence of poses, this is denoted "No. 6" on the verso of the mount, and is the portrait utilized for the dust jacket of the 8th volume of the COLLECTED LETTERS. This example is signed by Conrad diagonally across the lower right corner of the image and the mount, resulting in the portion of his signature ('Joseph Co') on the emulsion being rather faint unless viewed at an angle -- the portion of his signature extending on to the mount is perfectly clear. Below the photograph, Jessie Conrad has inscribed it: "To Mr. and Mrs. James T. Babb With every good wish for health and wealth from Jessie Conrad October 1927." James T. Babb (1899 - 1968) was Yale University Librarian from 1943 to 1965. Provenance: Babb - C.A. Stonehill - private collector - the present.

        Traumatic shock. Presentation copy.

Appleton, New York 1923 - Cannon, Walter B. (1871-1945). Traumatic shock. xvii, 201pp. Text illustrations. New York & London: D. Appleton, 1923. 263 x 173 mm. Original gilt-stamped cloth, one corner bumped. Light toning but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Cannon to Sir Cuthbert Wallace (1867-1944) on slip tipped to front pastedown: "To Sir Cuthbert Wallace with gratitude for your kindness and encouragement during our work in old Béthune. Walter B. Cannon." First Edition. Cannon, professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School, was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century, making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion, the autonomic nervous system, homeostasis, and stress response. "In the fall of 1916, before the United States entered World War I, the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917, he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher, first secretary of the Medical Research Committee, to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at Béthune. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon, the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at Béthune, Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace, consulting surgeon to the First Army, British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that "We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace, later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace, who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts" (p. ix).         FRANS MASEREEL

Berlin, Germany: Axel Juncker, 1923. Berlin, Germany: Axel Juncker, 1923. leather, title gilt-stamped on spine, five raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers. Masereel, Frans. small 4to. leather, title gilt-stamped on spine, five raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers. 177, (3) pages. Text in German. First edition, handbound, limited to 150 numbered copies. A survey of the life and work of the Expressionist printmaker and illustrator Frans Masereel (1889-1972), who has been called the greatest woodcut artist of the twentieth century. Though the Belgian artist's work was banned by the Nazis and widely distributed in Communist countries, he resisted politicized art and party affiliation, condemning oppression, war and violence. His woodcuts are remarkable for their lack of traditional hatching to create light and shadow. Instead, Masereel focused on the stark and powerful contrast between unmediated, depthless black against the paper. His images tend to be packed from edge to edge--with very few or no empty spaces, there is no respite for the eye. The forceful graphic quality of his woodcuts are stirringly sympathetic to the printed text, as both insist on high contrast and perfect clarity. Photographic portrait tipped-in. Edges of spine and raised bands rubbed. Covers lightly soiled.
