Bert Williams; Son of Laughter: A Symposium of Tribute to the Man and to His Work, by His Friends and Associates with a Preface by David Belasco

New York: The English Crafters. (1923). First. First edition. Neat, contemporary gift inscription, fine in a very attractive, very good dustwrapper that is chipped at the crown, affecting about one-half of the title. An appreciation gathered from reviews, memoirs and correspondence of the legendary performer, much-admired both on and off the stage, who bridged the period between minstrel performers and vaudeville. Among those represented are Ring Lardner, W.C. Fields, George M. Cohan, Jessie Fauset, W.E.B. Du Bois, Nat Wills, Leon Errol, and others. An exceptionally rare volume, never found in jacket; the text was subsequently printed in 1969 by the Negro Universities Press. .

        The Tomb Of Tut-Ankh-Amen

George H. Doran 1923 and 1927, New York - A very clean, bright, attractive and complete two volume set of this dramatic story - the discovery by Howard Carter of King Tut's tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The first volume was co-authored with A. C. Mace and published in 1923. The second volume was produced by Carter alone and published in 1927. Original red cloth with scarab decoration in gilt. Both jackets are complete and virtually as new. Volume one is a shade darker than Volume II but I believe this is the way they were issued and, though the typography and lay-out are identical, somewhat different paper was used for these jackets. Volume I has 104 illustrations from photographs by Harry Burton. Volume II has 153 photographs by Burton. These volumes are virtually as new not only because the condition is so fine, but also for the fact that they both remain largely un-opened with most pages uncut. This two volume set comes with a custom built slip-case with very attractive paper label based on the cover art, affixed to the spine end. An altogether lovely set of one of the great adventure and discovery stories of all time. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Cartoon panel commemorating the first Opening Day of Yankee Stadium (April 18, 1923)

[New York, 1923]. 11-5/8 x 17 inches. Pen and ink on artist's board, each image captioned; inscribed (ses below), signed ("Thornton Fisher"), and dated ("April 26, 1923") by the artist. Matted and framed; fine . The cartoonist and illustrator Thornton Fisher drew several newspaper comics and panels in the 1910s, including 'Kitty Keys', 'Raising the Family', 'Betty's Brother Bobby' and 'The Marrying of Mary'. He also frequently treated baseball and sporting subjects, and this comic commemoration of the very first opening day at Yankee Stadium, is inscribed by Fisher to yet another legendary name associated with the Yankees: Harry M. Stevens, the famous concessionaire who introduced the hot dog at a baseball game at the Polo Grounds in 1907. When Yankee Stadium opened in 1923, Stevens was already a familiar figure to the players; in fact, Babe Ruth - a passionate lover of hot dogs - considered Stevens a second father. The centerpiece of the composite drawing shows the large figure of Babe Ruth, smiling and cocking his bat, with the caption beneath, "Babe opened the Yank Stadium by Poking a Home Run in the 4th, Scoring Dugan and Ward." Nowadays, of course, Yankee Stadium is known as "The House That Ruth Built." Fisher's inscription reads: "To my good friend Harry M Stevens from his sincerely and merrily / Thornton Fisher / April 26th / 1923" A priceless association, and a superb memento of the birth of a baseball legend

Paris: L&#146;Estampe Moderne, 1923. An original Artist Signed Engraving in colours. Limited to only a very small number of copies. A beautiful engraved painting of a lovely woman turned away from the viewer but with her head turned back in profile. She is wearing a translucent gown with a plunging back that is barely visible against her fair skin and which ends in a flowing skirt. She is seated on an upholstered ottoman and holding a large fan made of bright feathers. Image size approximately 16 by 20 on larger sheet, now handsomely mounted in cream boards featuring a small silvered-wood inner frame along the inner edge of the mounting and framed in a matching but much larger silvered-wood frame with attractive carved detailing, glazed. The entire presentation approximately 24 by 27 inches. An extremely fine and handsomely presented piece. FINE AND IMPORTANT ART DECO SIGNED AND UNUSUALLY SCARCE ENGRAVING IN COLOURS. William Ablett was born in London in 1877 but lived for most of his life in Paris, where he died in 1937. He was a leading artist of the Boudoir Movement which was highly popular and influential to the period we now refer to as Art Deco.<br> The Twenties was the Boudoir Movement&#146;s greatest decade. The world was euphoric at the end of the World War I&#39;s crazed carnage. Societies celebrated lightheartedly as a new sense of security and prosperity pervaded the Western World. People played. Women forged ahead toward bold and independent destinies. And artists recorded the gay adventure in both traditional forms and modern media. With economies booming in France and America, "original" artist-signed engravings were much preferred over the cheaper mass-produced lithographs. So in the trendier galleries of that day, one might run across many of the newer works of the Boudoir Movement; including the luminary visions of William Ablett, works of Louis Icart, or the traditional sweet beauties of Maurice Millière. By mid decade, these artist where producing fine engraved Serigraphs via Paris distributors, perhaps the most noted being L&#39;Estampe Moderne. <br> Americans bought most of the pieces that came onto the market. For they were endeared to, and pleasantly challenged by, these French ladies. American women secretly admired their sass and strong wills; the men their daring and pertness. The message behind Boudoir was rarely focused purely on the sexual. There was always that sense of mystique, allure and maybe a "possibility". Therefore, etchings depicting nudes were less popular than those showing women in clinging, translucent gowns, as in the example here.

King and Duke Find the Money," from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

n.p., ca. 1923 - A fine dramatic depiction of the moment when, with Huck holding the candle, the King and the Duke examine the sack of gold coins they plan to swindle from Peter Wilks's rightful heirs. Worth Brehm was exceptionally skillful in his rendering of reflected light, and the use of it in this picture is remarkable. As with virtually all of the artist's illustrations, the greatly reduced published version pales in power and significance with the original drawing, which has an intensity the printed image cannot approach Published by Harper & Brothers in their edition of 1923. Image size 21 x 15 in. Charcoal on artist's board, signed at lower right. Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]
