Frontier Times - Eight Bound Volumes, 1923-1939

      J. Marvin Hunter, Bandera, Texas 1923 - Near fine original Frontier Times magazines beautifully bound in a red half leather and black half leather with gilt print on spines. In solid bindings, no cracked or loose hinges! Eight large bound volumes in all, it appears the first leather bound volume labeled Vol.1, 1-12 and Vol.2, 1-12 is labeled incorrectly. In examining the leather bound volume, we find it has Vol. 1, 1-12 but not Vol.2, 1-12. Instead it has Vol. 3, 1-12 in place of Vol. 2, 1-12. So, there are two sets of Vol. 3, 1-12 but no Vol. 2, 1-12. The remaining volumes appear to be complete runs from 1-12. This is a great set of original Frontier Times magazines starting at Vol.I and ending at Vol. 16 with the exception, as explained, of Vol. 2. They span the years 1923 to 1939. Mr. Hunter published his periodical during a time when early Texas settlers, pioneers, cattlemen, and observers of the events of Texas history were still alive and able to tell their stories. These magazines are highly sought after and are of almost unparalleled value to historians, authors, collectors and genealogists. They are rich in first-hand accounts of formative pioneer events. There is no modern revisionism here just the facts: bold, bloody and accurate. Please note; these are heavy books totaling 36 1/4 pounds, shipping will be quoted on these eight volumes as to your location. EXCEPTIONAL! [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Elliott's Last Legacy: Secrets of the King of All Kard Kings. Many tricks that have mystified the best Magicians of the world, Laid bare for the first time, together with many novel inventions, Taken from note books left by Dr. James William Elliott

New York: Adams Press Print. 1923. First. First edition. Illustrations by Oscar S. Teale. Compiled by Clinton Burgess. Binding lightly worn at the extremities, tidemark from a dampstain at the top corner of the pages throughout, front hinge tender but still a sound, very good copy. Illustrator Oscar S. Teale's copy with his "Teale Library of Mystery" bookplate and Inscribed to him by Houdini: "Presented by the Author -- Houdini -- to the Magician Artist who made all the drawings, Oscar S. Teale." Teale for his part, has Inscribed the book to a fellow magician: "Presented to Lester A. Grimes by O.S.T." Grimes has then Inscribed the book: "To my friend Gertrude Elliott from Grimes The Mystery Man, 1934." Reportedly, on his deathbed Elliott, the world's foremost card manipulator, asked his friend Houdini to edit and publish these notes. Whether the final recipient, Gertrude Elliott, was the famous stage actress (who was the original Cleopatra in Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra), or a relative of the "Kard King" we are unsure. An extraordinary association copy, nicely inscribed by three prominent magicians. .

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1923 - Fitzgerald's last book published before his masterpiece THE GREAT GATSBY which had a print run of 20,870 copies while this book had only 7,650 published. As with the better known GATSBY, this title, Fitzgerald's only published full-length play, also explores the American Dream but here with more comic intent and more pathetic results. The main character, Jerry Frost, strives to be President of the United States, if he is unable to make it as a postman. The quotation Fitzgerald places on the center of the title page sums it up: "Any man who doesn't want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in the White House, hasn't got as much to him as a good dog has -- he's nothing more or less than a vegetable." Bruccoli A 10.I.a Slight foxing to the endpapers. A Fine, bright copy in a Very Good, unrestored example of the uncommon dustwrapper that has a light stain at the bottom portion of the spine and an inch-deep chip at the top of the front cover obliterating most of the "T" in the word "The" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
