William M[itcheson] Timlin was born in Northumberland, England, and studied art in Newcastle before following his parents to South Africa, where he completed his studies in art and architecture. He also wrote stories and music, and did periodical illustrations. In 1923 he published The Ship that Sailed to Mars, which has become a fantasy classic, its genesis revealed in this superb collection of drawings.

First edition in English, number 64 of 1,000 copies, of which 500 were for distribution in the USA; first published in French by Brunoff, Paris, 1922. Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes production of the Sleeping Beauty, for which Leon Bakst designed the costumes and set, was first staged in London in 1921 at the Alhambra Theatre, as "The Sleeping Princess". Bakst's designs were a significant contribution to the modern art movement, as much as to theatre or costume design, and the expense of realising them nearly bankrupted Diaghilev. His Most Famous Publication Is The 1919 Article "The Arrangement Of Electrons In Atoms And Molecules" In Which, Building On Gilbert N. Lewis's Cubical Atom Theory And Walther Kossel's Chemical Bonding Theory, He Outlined His "Concentric Theory Of Atomic Structure". While At General Electric From 1909 To 1950, Langmuir Advanced Several Fields Of Physics And Chemistry, Invented The Gas-Filled Incandescent Lamp And The Hydrogen Welding Technique. Langmuir And Tonks Discovered Electron Density Waves In Plasmas That Are Now Known As Langmuir Waves. He Introduced The Concept Of Electron Temperature And In 1924 Invented The Diagnostic Method For Measuring Both Temperature And Density With An Electrostatic Probe, Now Called A Langmuir Probe And Commonly Used In Plasma Physics. Following World War I Langmuir Contributed To Atomic Theory And The Understanding Of Atomic Structure By Defining The Modern Concept Of Valence Shells And Isotopes. Langmuir Was Awarded The 1932 Nobel Prize In Chemistry For His Work In Surface Chemistry. The Langmuir Laboratory For Atmospheric Research Near Socorro, New Mexico, Was Named In His Honor, As Was The American Chemical Society Journal For Surface Science Called Langmuir. The Langmuir Adsorption Model Explains Adsorption By Assuming An Adsorbate Behaves As An Ideal Gas At Isothermal Conditions. The Freundlich Isotherm Has Two Parameters While Langmuir's Equations Has Only One: As A Result, It Often Fits The Data On Rough Surfaces Better Than The Langmuir's Equations.

Old Manor Houses (signed limited edition)

Heinemann, 1923. 1st edition. Hardcover. No 370 of 380 signed and numbered copies. Original vellum-backed boards, titled in gilt, rubbed and marked to front and back, corners slightly knocked, rough-cut pages as issued, a little browning on the half-title and similar rear pages, otherwise the contents are very clean and tidy, with Aldin's signature on the limitation page. His account of the history of six English manor houses is accompanied by his 12 mounted colour plates with captioned tissue guards and many tinted text drawings. Known for his illustrations of animals, particularly dogs, Aldin obviously couldn't resist the temptation here because, beneath the limitation statement, is his original pencil-and-ink drawing of a seated terrier. A charming book in all respects.

"Shtetl, Mayn Khoyever Heym; A Gedenknish" (My little town, my destroyed home; in memory)

Berlin-Charlottenburg: Verlag "Schwellen", 1923. First edition. Hardcover. fair to vg. Oblong folio (13 1/4 x 19 1/2"). [2], III-XXXI, [1] leaves. Original half blue cloth over illustrated blue velvet. Illustrated half-title, half-tone illustrated title. Ryback's powerful images were created as a memorial to the Jewish villages ("shtetlekh") - including his hometown - that were destroyed in pogroms in the aftermath of the disastrous WWI campaign and the Russian Civil War. They depict the peaceful daily life of a traditional Jewish shtetl before the upcoming destructions and massacres: a city street, the artisans (including a shoemaker, a tailor and a knife-sharpener), musicians, the market, the synagogue, a wedding, a funeral, the Jewish cemetery, the rabbi and the Hasidic rebbe. The lithographs measure 10 3/4 x 15", and are all dated 1917 in the stone. Of the 30 half-tone plates (Title + plates numbered from III-XXXI), four are printed in bistre, and the others in sepia or black. This book is complete with its original list of plates inserted at rear. Front cover rubbed along edges, with some abrasion to velvet. Spine partly frayed. Discoloration to front cover, and edge toning along edges of back cover. Tip of lower corners throughout slighly creased (not affecting plates). One foxing stain at lower left corner of illustrations in plates 16 to 19. Title and captions in Yiddish.
