Peaks & Passes from Dauphiné to Mont Blanc

1923 - Summer 1923.Photograph album, with 12 leaves. 109 original mounted photographs (various sizes), all with descriptive titles written in ink beneath on white mounts, or framed & titled beneath directly onto album pages in white pen, with one printed card (77 by 51mm approx) & manuscript chart of climbs (53 by 72mm). Oblong 4to. Original boards. [French Alps], The album includes several stunning mountain views, taken during various ascents, along with some fascinating images illustrating the life of the local people on the slopes below, prior to the arrival of the skiing industry. In addition, there are ten photographs of the intrepid mountaineers in their sturdy tweeds, roped to their companions, as they make their way up the mountains, across seracs, and over glaciers. Whilst the images taken at Chamonix certainly show considerable change during the last century, it is those taken arround the villages of Tignes, Val d'Isère and Courmayeur, which demonstrate most clearly the great changes which have taken place over the last seventy years. Accompanied by the first sheet of a letter on copy paper: ?I have just come from a lantern lecture by Miss Woolley. Did you know that she & her sister have climbed Mont Blanc this summer? She took a large number of photographs, & made her own slides from them - so I am very proud of her.? [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Science of Being

      J. F. Tapley Co., New York 1923 - New Age philosophy, lesson plan and elaborate spiritual therapy before there was a "New Age", all built on the notion of a Universal Life Energy. 8vo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. 329, [2] pp. Striking illustrations and letter devices throughout the text, with gilt used generously to heighten both. Also, the swastika is an omnipresent symbol, but here it predates the appropriation of the symbol by the Nazis and has nothing to do with that movement. Eugene Fersen was born Baron Eugene Fersen to a Russian Grand Duchess, according to a website that seeks to promote his ideas. He had developed his Science of Being, the ideas expounded upon in this book, by 1906. After being investigated by the Justice Department for some years for alleged radicalism, he managed to become a U.S. citizen in 1923. According to the same website, he was a much sought-after lecturer for the rest of his life, and an influence on Rudolf Steiner. He died in 1956. Book condition: edge fraying of silk endpapers. Rubbing of faux alligator surface along edges and at spine extremities. Edge roughness to a prelim blank leaf. Handwriting of prior owner, in part, handsomely done, on prelim blank leaf. A few leaves with flattened creases from prior dog-earing. Overall, clean and an appealing copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Topographie von Oberösterreich, 1674 nebst dessen Landkarte von Oberösterreich, 1669. Neuduck nach den im Oberösterr. Landesarchiv noch vorhand. 234 Orig. Kupferplatten, mit einer Abhandlung über Georg Matthäus Vischer verfaßt von Eduard Straßmayr.

Linz. R. Pirngruber. 1923 - 0 25 x 35,5 cm. 28 Seiten Text.

Original pictorial portfolio consisting of 13, [1] pp. of text and 33 numbered lithographed plates on card stock, including one printed in blue and red. The portfolio with nicks to extremities and lightly dust-soiled; contents very good or better. Portfolio of cubist-inspired decorative patterns, lettering and ornament samples, in the original paper folder, the front illustration of which is replicated on one of the plates. The preface explains the plates and sketches Wellner's views on modern Czech design. He distinguishes his own work from the Vienna Secession and other outdated approaches, maintaining the necessity of following new, modern styles in ornamentation and hopes to implement a unified approach across all Czech art schools. "Pedagogization of modern art is a salient feature of Czech modernism. Wellner's collection of decorative design comprises both angular and rondo-cubist patterns" (Karel Toman, Czech Cubism and the Book, 174). On Wellner's book in the context of Czech "cubist" design, see Toman, Cubism and the Book, p. 174. Rare; not in KVK, OCLC.

        Aktiva maksla (Active Art) [Essay]

Izdevnieciba "Laikmets"; Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag, A.-G., Postdam 1923 - Latvian language. Enlarged album format. Octavo 23 x 30 cm. Weight 260 gr. Wrappers, 62 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, dameges, losses and remarks. Occasionally visible stains of fingerprints on coated fine paper. Dust jacket covering made from brown paper is occasionally torn along the folds with some small brown stains. Andrejs Kurcijs's radical left art and literary circle "Active Art" was one of the few elaborated modernism manifestoes in the Latvian intellectual milieu. It is a kind of theoretical treatise of activism, which deals with problems of both European and Latvian art, including visual art. The conception of Activism is is closely related to formalism - artistic form is that enduring element that excites the viewer with aesthetic means and depends on intellectual effort, contrary to stagnant and conservative academic traditions of representational art and passivity of Naturalism and Impressionism. Kurcijs' conception, titled after the German literary trend, was basically similar to ideas of the Russian Constructivists as well as French Cubists and Purists (Fernand Leger, Amedee Ozenfant). Speaking about activism and cubism, Kurcijs also stress the widely circulating cubist idea that they depict things 'as they really are', apart from their irrelevant, accidental features. More critical is Kurcijs' approach to suprematism. Although it may be the most consequent in rendering 'things in themselves', at the same time it loses its emotional, spiritual qualities, its 'artistic mathematics'. Although Kurcijs' later writings are mostly Marxist-inspired, he retained the quest for active, innovative form to express the active content. Book is richly illustrated with 24 full-paged artworks reproductions of of the greatest world famous avant-garde artists: Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Ivan Puni, Georges Braque, Carlo Carra, Albert Gleizes, Niklavs Strunke, Voldemars Matvejs etc. Andrejs Kurcijs (1884-1959) Latvian leftist poet, writer, art critic, politician, member of Independent Socialist Party; was one of the most erudite cultural thinkers of the time, proclaimed ideas of European modernism.
