Photo Album - British Special Services Squadron on a World Cruise Visiting Ports of Call Around the World

World, 1923. Cruise Around the World, November 1923 - September 1924. The official photograph album produced for and made available for the crew who participated in "The Empire Cruise," a ten month World Cruise made by the British Special Services Squadron. Contains 348 gelatin silver print photographs with typescript captions, mounted with onto cardstock leaves. Also with a full page colour map of the voyage. Oblong 8vo. album made by Empire Photographic Publishing Co. of London, measuring approximately 31 x 25 x 3 cm, navy blue suede boards, titled in gilt to front, also with a clever gilt vignette of a crown formed of ships' sails. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 4,5 x 7,5 cm, and the largest being the frontis portrait of King George V measuring approximately 5 x 18 cm. Scant few images mildly age-toned, otherwise very good, original condition. In 1923-1924, HMS Hood and the Special Service Squadron sailed around the world on The Empire Cruise, visiting many ports of call in the countries which had fought together during the First World War. Departing from Devonport on 27 November 1923, the squadron's first stop was Sierra Leone. Other ports of interest include Durban and Zanzibar in Africa, Singapore, seven ports in Australia and Hobart in Tasmania, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, nine port on the coasts of South America from Rio de Janeiro to Valparaiso and Callao, the Falkland Islands, San Francisco, Halifax, and many more in between. The fleet would separate at various points of the cruise with the battleships passing through the Panama Canal, while some of the battlecruisers ventured around Cape Horn. The album begins with a large portrait of King George V, followed by photographs of the vessels and their commanders, and a map of the sea routes taken by HMS Hood, HMS Repulse, HMS Dehli, HMS Danae, HMS Dragon, HMS Dauntless, and also HMAS Adelaide which joined the other vessels at Sydney. A privilege to any one who participated, they were received with exuberant, unique and festive style in various countries. Capturing indigenous tradition, important colonial buildings, monuments, interactions of the crew onshore and visitors onboard the ships, some highlights and unusual images include a horse-drawn carriage used for Royal Mail delivery in rural Australia, Maori dancers and a fire making display, Fijian men in warrior costume, a Samoan chief, two of the vessels at Honolulu's port, Butchart Gardens and the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the Pacific side of Canada, a dragon boat, San Francisco harbour and the Golden Gate, traversing the Panama Canal which had only opened ten years prior in 1914, a tour of Jamaica, views of Quebec, Newfoundland, and Halifax, and finally, HMS Hood firing a 15 inch gun at sea. V.C. Scott O'Connor, a journalist who was onboard HMS Hood for the global affair, wrote an account of the voyage and of his experiences in "The Empire Cruise," published in 1925.. Very Good.

        Dlya Golossa

1923. LISSITZKY, El. Dlya Golosa. [For Reading Out Loud]. By Vladimir Mayakovsky. 61, [3] pp. Illustrated throughout by Lizzitzky. 8vo., 187 x 132 mm, bound in original publisher's thick orange wrappers designed by Lissitzky, housed in a new cloth box. Berlin: Gosizdat, 1923. |~||~||~||~| One of the cornerstones of any collection of Russian Futurist books. Dlya Golosa is widely considered to be Lissitzky's masterpiece of modern typography. Lissitzky designed title-pages for each of Mayakovsky's poems, which are some of his most frequently quoted poetic works, including "Left March," "Ramble," "The Third International," "The Art Army," "Love," and "The Story of Red Riding Hood." Lissitzky described the inspiration that prompted the innovative design of Dlya Golosa in his essay "Typographical Facts": "To make it easier for the reader to find any particular poem, I use an alphabetical (i.e. thumb-indexed) index. The book is created with the resources of the compositor's type case alone. The possibilities of two-colour printing (overlap, cross hatching and so on) have been exploited to the full. My pages stand in much the same relation to the poems as an accompanying piano to a violin. Just as the poet in his poem unites concept and sound, I have tried to create an equivalent unity using the poem and typography" (cf. Lissitzky-Kuppers, #94-108). What resulted was an outstanding typographical success. Lightly dust-soiled with minor creasing to wrapper corners, tabs a bit dust-soiled, else in remarkably good condition. From Manet to Hockney 68. Nisbet, El Lissitzky 1890-1941, p. 26, plate 94 and p. 186. Leclanche-Boulé, plates 21 and 77.

        The World Crisis

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1923?-31. 5 volumes in 6, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt and to front board in blind. Housed in a cloth slipcase. Illustrated throughout with maps and charts (many folding). Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown of Volume I. Extremities a touch rubbed and bumped, endpapers of Volumes III and III lightly browned, edges tanned and with occasional spotting. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions; Volume V second state with the erroneous errata at p. 9. Volume V inscribed on the first blank: "Richard Hopkins from Winston S. Churchill, 6.3.29". Published on 7 March 1929, this is one of more than 100 pre-publication copies "sent out to Cabinet colleagues, friends and others who had helped him in the preparation of the volumes" (Cohen). Hopkins was a career civil servant who first encountered Churchill in 1913, when, as a young Treasury official, he worked with him on the negotiation of the Anglo-Persian Oil Agreement. Hopkins became key player in the successful post-War reorganization of the Inland Revenue, rising to chairman of the board in 1922: "As chairman Hopkins was renowned for his skills as a negotiator and for the goodwill he generated among junior and senior colleagues alike" (ODNB) In 1927 Churchill, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, impressed by Hopkins's "emollient and pragmatic" approach (Clarke "Churchill's Economic Ideas 1900-1930", in Blake and Louis Churchill, p. 91) appointed him as Controller of Finance and Supply Services at the Treasury; "for eighteen years [Hopkins was] the chief Treasury adviser on all matters concerning financial policy and the control of government expenditure. At a time when the scale of national finances and the economic role of government were transformed, he served six chancellors of the exchequer and confronted policy problems which ranged in time and scope from negotiations on reparations and war debts to the financial crisis of the early 1930s, rearmament, and finally a second war … [playing] a key rôle in the transition from an essentially laissez-faire to a modern managed economy in Britain … a rôle [which] proved particularly decisive during the Second World War … [beginning] with his efforts to bring Keynes into the Treasury as a wartime adviser, from which ensued many critical domestic and external economic policy decisions" (ODNB) A treasured colleague, Hopkins was close to being the embodiment of what Churchill referred to in his speech to the Commons on 22 January 1944 as the irresistible power of departmental advice "based on knowledge and on systematized and organized currents of opinion". Volume II with bookplate of the British politician and author Woodrow Wyatt (1918?-1997) to front pastedown.

Original watercolour for The Ship That Sailed to Mars. "The Iron Hills"

[Kimberley, South Africa, sometime before, 1923]. From The Ship That Sailed to Mars. Original watercolour on paper (visible image 245 × 206 mm; framed 410 × 370 mm). Together with original leaf of accompanying calligraphic text: the descriptive text to accompany this plate (text in black with initial letters and decorations in blue). Two items individually matted, glazed and framed. Born in Northumberland, Timlin emigrated to South Africa, where he studied art and practised as an architect. The Ship That Sailed to Mars (1923) is his only published book, a fantastical illustrated gift book that rivalled those of Rackham, Dulac, Goble and Nielsen. The book was published by George Harrap, who had earlier published Willy Pogany, and they followed a similar format here, reproducing Timlin's original calligraphic text mounted, like the plates, on grey matte paper. Timlin's book is divided in three parts: detailing the building and outfitting of the ship, the journey, and the arrival. "The Iron Hills" is the fourteenth plate of the third part, showing a dragon flying over dark mountain peaks.

        Bread (First Edition)

Charles Norris was the brother of novelist Frank Norris, and the husband of author Kathleen Norris.

World War Through the Stereoscope. [First World War stereo views].

Keystone View Company,, Meadville, PA: 1923 - A near-complete set of 300 stereo views, illustrating the war in all its facets including battlefields, soldiers and activities on the home front. This was the most comprehensive set on the war issued by Keystone, the largest and most prominent publisher of stereoscopic photographs in the United States, and by the 1920s, the only major publisher in the world, with offices in London, Paris, Sydney, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. In 1918, the were one of the few publishers permitted to photograph World War I battlefields and military operations. The geographic locations included Germany, Italy, Turkey (Gallipoli), the Balkans (Serbia) and the United States; however, military activities in Belgium and on the French front are most strongly represented, comprising over one-third of the collection. Within these locations, images detail troops, city & battlefield ruins, trenches, medical operations, troop provisioning, victory parades and peace talks. Most interesting is the portrayal of the aircraft used during the war, the first war that aircraft were used on a large scale. A series of views depict the aircraft including biplanes, zeppelins and observation balloons. A card entitled "Scouts, Old and New, French cavalry and Army Airplane" shows a group of men on horseback looking into the sky at a biplane. Another interesting card is an aerial photograph, "The Eyes of the Army- View of German Town from American Airplane". [The only missing card is an image of a biplane, card #154.] Other images of war machinery include warships, U-boats and machine guns. Other interesting images include African-American soldiers returning home (288); women at work on the front (264, 293, 294) and the use of dogs at the front. Generally, there is an emphasis on the war from the American point of view, but the horror of the French front is overwhelming, along with the fat, ineffectual generals. Starting in 1923, Keystone issued these sets in groups of 75, 100, 200 & 300 cards. The set was in print for 10 years, and this set is from the early issues, as later issues were numbered with a "W". Originally, they came in three double book-form volumes, with series and position number on reverse side, the title being "World War Through the Stereoscope (1st through 4th edition). They were also originally issued with a descriptive pamphlet & stereo viewer. This set has the remnants of the three boxes, the spines of two boxes and lacks the descriptive pamphlet. It retains the stereo viewer, which lacks the adjustable slide piece in which the cards are seated for viewing. The cards are slightly bowed (as issued). The silver gelatin print images are extremely bright and strong. Each card is numbered in the center upper margin, above the images, with descriptive text on the back, the image number and the series. A very immediate depiction of the war, conveying both the patriotic, technical advances and the immensely sad desolation that is war.

Albertine Zehme (1857-1946), an actress born in Vienna and later active in Berlin, is now exclusively remembered as the person who commissioned and first performed Pierrot Lunaire. Website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna (Schoenberg in his diary). The poems are by the Belgian Albert Giraud (1860-1929) in the German translation by Erich Otto Hartleben (1864-1905). Folio.       London: Macmillan and Co., Limited 1923-34 - 6 volumes, octavo. Original green and red cloth, titles to spine gilt, most copies with front board with blocked design, pages untrimmed. Light rubbing to ends of spine, corners gently bumped, 4 volumes with sunning to spine, a few volumes with soiling and markings to spine and boards, 5 volumes with inner hinges cracked, Collected Poems volume with bumping to top end of front edge, occasional spotting to pages. Overall a very good set. First editions (Essays, Autobiographies, Plays and Controversies) and three early reprints of Yeats' works, the copies of Essays, Autobiographies, Plays, and Collected Poems with presentation inscriptions from Yeats to Margot Collis, "To Margot from her Friend W.B Yeats 1934." Three volumes with the presentation presented on the front free endpaper and the other volume with the presentation on the half title page. Later Poems, though uninscribed, has Collis's pencil ownership inscription. Margot Collis (1907-51) was the stage name for Irish actress Marguerite Ruddock. Their relationship started in the year these books were presented. Their correspondence was published under the title Ah, Sweet Dancer. Collis was also a poet and Yeats is said to have helped edit her works; he included some of her work in the Oxford Book of Modern Verse which Yeats edited in 1936. Collis was married at the time of her relationship with Yeats to actor Raymond Lovell. She was madly in love with Yeats, though he was married to Georgie, and merely engaging in some later-life promiscuity to make up for his younger years spent hopelessly in love with Maud Gonne. The relationship unravelled and Collis became unstable, offering Yeats the inspiration for his poem "A Crazed Girl". Laid in is a 4 page autograph letter signed "Bob" (unidentified - on 26 Burton Court, London, stationary) advising Collis on the writing of a play and the portrayal of characters. The volume of Plays also contains two signed annotations by Yeats, one to the beginning of the play Deirdre ("I have crossed out a number of needless lines in the opening of the play. W.B.Y.") and another at the end of The Player Queen, "(I have altered the end, as last played in Dublin, Decima puts on a mask left behind by the players, makes them dance. They have ??? their animal forms, she stores their money - ??? remembers ??? - her ambiguous words are a farewell to all that she has loved. ??? banishment but with great rewards. W.B.Y.)" Wade 158.
