Abraham Horodisch, the renown antiquarian bookseller, noted "The typographical design of the book is exquisite......Of all the illustrated editions of the `Ballad', the Masereel edition seems to me to have the highest importance,,,,,,,,Surely there can be few who will remain unmoved by their suggestive power." Attractive early twentieth century craft binding of full dark brown morocco by Katherine Pountney and signed by her in gilt to the rear inner board. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments ruled in gilt. Olive coloured title label ruled and lettered in gilt. Front board with decorative angular design featuring multiple gilt ruled lines and emerald green morocco onlays. Rear board with single gilt ruled border. Marbled endpapers and double gilt ruled lines on inner boards. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. The edges are just a little rubbed but overall this is an attractive hand tooled craft binding. Katherine Pountney studied under Douglas Cockerell and taugh bookbinding at the Bromley Art School in London.

        The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings

      London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a collector grade full British first edition, first printing six-volume set, published between 1923 and 1931, increasingly scarce in such condition. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning, and the final volume, The Eastern Front, was produced in smaller numbers, making it challenging to fill complete sets. This is a full first printing set, with all six volumes in near fine or better condition. The bindings are unusually clean, bright, and tight, with vivid spine gilt, excellent shelf presentation, and only minor wear primarily confined to extremities. The Eastern Front is a treat, as we rarely see copies this clean. The beautiful condition of the binding is explained by differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to dust jacket flaps, suggesting that this copy was long jacketed. The contents remain crisp and bright with spotting confined to the page edges. The Aftermath binding is also worthy of particular note, showing none of the blistering of the cloth endemic to the first printing and with nearly pristine contents. The 1911-1914 volume is the first state, lacking the errata slip. The contents of all six volumes are bright, with contents that feel unread. Modest spotting appears primarily confined to the page edges of the 1911-1914, 1915, and Eastern Front volumes. The same armorial bookplate – that of Reginald Arthur Loyd – is affixed to the pastedowns of the 1915 and 1916-1918 volumes. Loyd appears to have served in the British Army during the First World War. The only other previous ownership mark we find is an inked owner name and date of “Apr 1923” – the month of publication – on the 1911-1914 volume front free endpaper.         Private Album with ca. 317 Original Photographs of Parties, Picnics and Trips around Vancouver, Victoria and Vancouver Island, Including Images from the Woodward's Annual Staff Picnic in 1923 and the Piggly Wiggly Picnic in 1930].

      - 1923-1933. Oblong Folio (ca. 29x40 cm). 44 card leaves (23 blank). Ca. 317 gelatin silver prints, the majority ca. 8x5,5 cm (3x2 in) or ca. 10x6 cm (4 x 2 ¼ in); all but three mounted on the leaves (the three are loosely inserted). A number of images with white manuscript captions on the mounts or ink captions on the lower margins. Original black cloth album fastened with a string, with gilt lettered title "Photographs" on the front cover and paper label of "Canadian Kodak Co. Ltd., Toronto" on the inner side of the back cover. Some images slightly faded or with mild silvering, one with a repaired tear, but overall a very good album. Lively private album with numerous group portraits from parties, summer holidays, picnics, and trips around Vancouver, Victoria and US West Coast. The album includes a number of interesting images illustrating B.C. local history, for example a series of ca. 30 photos taken at the Woodward's Annual Staff Picnic on the Mayne Island (the Southern Gulf Islands, B.C.) on July 18th 1923; the participants were taken to the island by the C.P.R. Coastal steamer "Princess Royal." Woodward's department store (located at the West Cordova St.) was the premiere shopping destination in Vancouver in the first half of the 20th century. The company went bankrupt in 1993, and the original building of the Woodward's department store was demolished in 2006 for a subsequent redevelopment of the site. The other interesting images show the storefront of a Piggly Wiggly grocery store and several portraits from a Piggly Wiggly Picnic in the Seaside Park in 1930. There are also photos from a camping trip to the Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver), views and portraits taken in the English Bay, Stanley Park, White Cliff Park, beach in White Rock, Crescent Beach, Active Pass, photo of a "N. Van. Ferry," numerous portraits taken during road trips in front of automobiles (Bellingham, Cloverdale, Vancouver Island, "7 mi from Hotel Leopold," Capilano Canyon, Cameron Lake, Crescent Beach, Mt. Baker et al.). Some images were taken on Vancouver Island, with photos of groups posing in front of private houses in Victoria, or in the Butchart Gardens; there are also nice views of the Union Bay, and totem poles in Sechelt. Several images are group family portraits taken in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Overall an attractive and vivid representation of Vancouver social life in the 1920s. Lovecraft praises the 'titanically suggestive' illustrations to 'The Lurking Fear'. The Mage of Providence writes to Clark Ashton Smith with extravagant praise for the illustrations to the early installments of "The Lurking Fear" in Home Brew for January and February 1923. The story is considered, with "Dagon" (1922), as one of Lovecraft's first major stories and its publication was an important stepping stone to gaining a wider audience. Lovecraft began publishing in Weird Tales later in 1923, and "The Lurking Fear" was reprinted there in 1928. Reading in part "I hate to lay on flashy superlatives - but I'll be hanged if Doré ever conceived anything more titanically suggestive ... your pictorial art should be recognised as well as your poetry. ¶ Am eagerly awaiting 'Ebony & Crystal' - Sincerely - H.P.L." Lovecraft and Smith corresponded from 1922 until Lovecraft's death in 1937. Here, at the early stages of their exchanges, Lovecraft praises Smith's art and poetry in no uncertain terms.

Mai 1608, heute im Bayerischen Hauptstaatsarchiv Die Protestantische Union, auch Union von Auhausen oder Deutsche Union, war ein 1608 in Auhausen (Fürstentum Ansbach, heute Landkreis Donau-Ries, Bayern) ins Leben gerufener Zusammenschluss von acht protestantischen Fürsten und 17 protestantischen Städten im Heiligen Römischen Reich. Seit dem Augsburger Religionsfrieden galten das katholische und das lutherische Glaubensbekenntnis im Reich als gleichberechtigt. Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts war das Verhältnis der Konfessionen zunehmend von Misstrauen erfüllt. Die Auseinandersetzungen gewannen an Schärfe und eskalierten im Kölner Krieg und im Straßburger Kapitelstreit. Bemühungen des calvinistischen Pfälzer Kurfürsten Friedrich IV., die untereinander gespaltenen Protestanten zu einem Bündnis gegen die empfundene „spanische Bedrohung" zu vereinen, scheiterten zunächst am Widerstand der von Kursachsen angeführten Lutheraner. 1606/07 spitzte sich die Lage in den Kreuz- und Fahnengefechten weiter zu, als Rat und Bürgerschaft der mehrheitlich protestantischen Reichsstadt Donauwörth eine katholische Prozession störten. Kaiser Rudolf II. verhängte die Reichsacht über die Stadt und übertrug die Exekution dem bayerischen Herzog Maximilian I. – gegen geltendes Recht, denn Maßnahmen gegen die schwäbische Stadt wären Sache des vom protestantischen Württemberg geführten Schwäbischen Kreises gewesen. Maximilian nutzte die Gelegenheit, um die Stadt noch im Dezember 1607 in Besitz zu nehmen und in der Folge zu rekatholisieren. Auf dem im Januar 1608 in Regensburg eröffneten Reichstag brachten die Protestanten ihre Missbilligung zum Ausdruck und forderten eine förmliche Bestätigung des Augsburger Religionsfriedens. Versuche einer Verständigung scheiterten; handlungsunfähig geworden, endete der Reichstag am 27. April 1608 ohne Reichsabschied. Durch die Ereignisse von Regensburg sahen sich die Protestanten in ihrem Misstrauen gegenüber den Institutionen des Reichs bestätigt. In ihren Augen vertrat der Kaiser nicht mehr die Interessen des Reichs, sondern diejenigen der katholischen Kirche und des Hauses Habsburg. Anfang Mai 1608 lud der Ansbacher Markgraf Joachim Ernst die protestantischen Fürsten Süddeutschlands zu Beratungen nach Auhausen ein. Die Tagung begann am 12. Mai. Im Verlauf der fünftägigen Verhandlungen unterzeichneten die Fürsten mehrere Abkommen, so am 14. Mai 1608 den eigentlichen Unionsvertrag. Beteiligt waren Friedrich IV. von der Pfalz, vertreten durch seinen Bevollmächtigten Christian von Anhalt, der württembergische Herzog Johann Friedrich, Prinz Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg sowie die Markgrafen Joachim Ernst von Brandenburg-Ansbach, Christian von Brandenburg-Kulmbach und Georg Friedrich von Baden. Der vorläufig auf zehn Jahre befristete Pakt war als reines Defensivbündnis formuliert: die Mitglieder versprachen sich gegenseitige Hilfe, wenn eins oder anderes von uns [.] angegriffen wird. Mitglieder der Protestantischen Union Gründungsmitglieder (1608): Spätere Beitritte: Pfalz Hessen-Kassel Ansbach Pfalz-Zweibrücken Kulmbach Sachsen-Anhalt Baden-Durlach Öttingen Pfalz-Neuburg (Austritt 1617) 17 Reichsstädte, (u. a.       Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1923-1925. J.R. Abbey's set. Two volumes. One of 180 copies & 200 copies respectively on Batchelor 'knight in armour' paper, there were also 12 & 15 copies printed on vellum. Printed in double column in red, blue (particularly in the Minor Poems )and black in Subiaco type with large initials printed in red and blue designed by Graily Hewitt, who also designed the opening words for each Booke of the Faerie Queene. The Greek type which appears occasionally designed by Selwyn Image for Macmillan. Folio, original brown cowhide backed ivory vellum sides bound in the WH Smith bindery with their monogram on the lower turn-in, gilt lettering on spine. Both volumes have some rubbing on the headcaps and tiny chips at the bottoms of the spine, slight offset on the free endpapers from booklabels but in general they are good, fresh copies. Major J. R. Abbey's set with his shelf marks on the lower pastedown and last blank both dated 1927. The paper for these volumes is larger in size than any used before at the Press and in the Bibliography Hornby begs any future binders to leave it alone and not trim it down thus spoiling his carefully designed proportions of the margins. The Minor Poemswas the last of the Ashendene Press Folios printed in Subiaco type and it was a stupendous swansong with the superb balance of the lines of poems in two columns and with the fine colour printing and large initials. The Faerie Queene, written in the 1590s by Spenser is one of the longest poems in the English language. It follows Arthurian knights in the examination of 12 moral virtues and was a huge success in its time owing to Elizabeth I's political approval of its noble and virtuous teachings and its celebration of the Tudor dynasty. Quite a text to undertake. It took Hornby nearly two years to print it. With the booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson

        The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings

      London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a full British first edition, first printing six-volume set, published between 1923 and 1931. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning, and the final volume, The Eastern Front, was produced in smaller numbers, making it challenging to fill complete sets. This full first printing set ranges from good to near very good condition, respectable but showing some of the wear and faults endemic to the first edition. Shelf presentation is quite good, with nicely rounded spines, strong navy color, and bright gilt except for The Eastern Front, which shows a vertical dimple to the spine. The bindings generally show light overall scuffing and minor wear to extremities. The chief flaw that prevents us from grading most of the volumes in this set higher is spotting, heavy to most of the page edges and some prelims. The sole internal previous ownership marks in the set are the tiny sticker of a London bookseller (Myers & Co. of New Bond Street, London) affixed to the lower front pastedown of the first five volumes. The Aftermath is a high point in the set, of note for a particularly clean, tight, and square binding which shows none of the blistering of the cloth commonly seen in the first edition. The Eastern Front binding shows no internal previous ownership marks and all illustrations are present, as is the color folding map at p.368. Nonetheless, The Eastern Front does show some staining of the covers and evidence that a Boots Library sticker (we recognize the telltale shape and placement) was long ago removed from the lower front cover, corroborated by a Boots Library order form tipped in at p.17. For those unfamiliar, the Boots Book Lending service was established in 1898 at the instigation of Florence Boot. By 1903, there were 300 Boots stores across the country, of which 143 had a "Booklovers?' Library". Boots Library stressed circulation of clean books and books withdrawn from circulation were offered for sale. The Last Boots branches closed in 1966. A notable early work from one of the great American writers and issued like so many important literary works of that time from a small but significant American press in Paris. William Bird founded the Three Mountains Press in the 1920’s and worked closely with Robert McAlmon's Contact Editions not long after opening. Bird was responsible for publishing and/or printing numerous major literary works of the era including several works by Ezra Pound, Ford Madox Ford's "Women and Men," Robert McAlmon's "Distinguished Air," William's "The Great American Novel," and perhaps most notably, Hemingway's second and defining work, "In Our Time." In fact, Pound edited the series of six short prose works that included this present novel and Hemingway's, "In Our Time." Pound solicited Williams's work for this series about which he wrote in a letter to Williams that the "point of the thing [would] lie in its being really interesting." Williams's novel was that. While he later referred to it as a "satire on the novel form," his bibliographer contended that "it could be described as an attempt to explore," using Williams's own word, "the background of American life" (Wallace 16). An important work in its own right, "The Great American Novel" is also rooted in the culture of expatriate artists that Gertrude Stein named the Lost Generation. Bird's Press was integrally connected to the burgeoning Modernist movement in Paris which would define a generation of writers and influence generations that followed. February 5, 1923], in German to Zionist leader Arthur Ruppin (1876-1943) appearing below an Autograph Note Signed by Ruppin's wife, Hanna Ruppin (""Hanna""). On the recto, Einstein has added a delightful self portrait above the image of the ship and signing it ""A. Einstein"" below, together with a portrait, also in his hand, of ""Frau Ruppin."" Light horizontal crease with a minor tear at left margin does not affect the drawings or Einstein's note on the verso, minor toned spot below the address line, else fine condition. Einstein writes to Ruppin in full (translated): ""To my dear Mr. Ruppin, We are having unforgettable days in Palestine. With the sun shining, in cheerful company. Your wife is standing next to me and looking at what I am writing about her. She is counting the days until you come back. Yours, A. Einstein"". (At the time, Ruppin had been on an extended fundraising trip in the Untied States, see Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle, December 15, 1922.) Above his note, Hanna Ruppin also writes her husband (translated): ""Dear Arthur, A pleasant tour of the city. Included is a picture by Prof. Einstein. Warm greetings, Hanna."" True to her word, on the recto, Einstein had drawn a diminutive self-portrait (signed below) together with a rendering of ""Frau Ruppin"". Above the drawings, he added the words, ""Jerusalem"", ""Heiligenschein"" (or ""halo"") with an arrow pointing to his image. Einstein's depiction of himself as a rotund, almost comical figure stands in contrast to the elegantly-dressed ""Frau Ruppin"" with her stylish hat, shapely figure and umbrella. A newly-minted celebrity following the reception of the 1921 Nobel Prize for physics, Einstein was on his return to Europe following a six-month lecture tour that took him as far as Japan in late 1922. He returned to Europe via Sri Lanka and the Suez Canal, stopping at Port Said on February 1, 1923 for two weeks in Palestine. Einstein made the stop at the invitation of Arthur Ruppin (1876-1943), an early Zionist thinker and leader. Academically trained in Germany in economics and law, he was awarded the Krupp prize in 1899 for his dissertation on Darwinism and industry. He joined the Zionist Organization in 1905 and acted as a land agent to purchase land in Palestine in order to facilitate the migration of European Jews. From 1933 to 1935, he headed the Jewish Agency which assisted German Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in settling in Palestine. At the time of Einstein's visit to Palestine, Ruppin was on an extended fundraising tour in the United States (Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle, Decmeber 15, 1922, p. 10). From Port Said, Einstein boarded a train for Jerusalem, where he was greeted not unlike a visiting head of state in light of his of recent scientific achievements, as well as his support of the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. The first night, Einstein was the guest of an aide to the British High Commissioner for the Palestinian Mandate and he spent the next two days informally touring the Old City, as well as taking a trip to the Dead Sea via Jericho. February 5th marked the first day of his official tour organized by the Zionists. Writing in his travel diary, he recorded (translated): ""Tour of two Jewish colonial settlements west of Jerusalem, belonging to the city. The construction is carried out by Jewish workers' cooperative in which the leaders are elected. The workers arrive without specialized knowledge or expertise and achieve excellence after a short time. The leaders are paid no more than the workers."" According to corresponding sources, Einstein's first visit that morning was to the suburb of Beth Hakerem, in the west of Jerusalem, accompanied by Hanna Ruppin, together with Hadassah Samuel and Solomon Ginzburg. (see Ha'aretz and Doar Hayom, February 7, 1923, and Kark and Oren-Nordheim 2001, p. 169). On the afternoon of February 7th, Einstein delivered the inaugural lecture on the future sight of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus, an institution in which he was intimately involved . There, he apologized for not being able to deliver his address in Hebrew and then proceeded to give a 90 minute talk (in perfect French) outlining his theory of relativity (Einstein, Collected Papers, Vol. 13, p. lxvi). After Jerusalem, Einstein travelled to Tel Aviv, where Mayor Meir Dizengoff bestowed him the honor of honorary citizenship, upon which he remarked ""I have already had the privilege of receiving an honorary citizenship of the City of New York, but I am tenfold happier to be a citizen of this beautiful Jewish town."" In his travel diary, Einstein recorded his favorable impressions of the young Jewish settlement: ""The accomplishments of the Jews in just a few years in this city arouses the highest admiration... An incredibly active people, our Jews."" (Travel Diary, February 8, 1923). His tour continued with visits to Haifa and Tiberious, and ending in Jerusalem before he departed via rail for Port Said the morning of February 14th. On February 16th, he embarked on the R.M.S. Ormuz for Marseilles. From there he travelled to Spain, delivering lectures in Barcelona and Madrid. Although Einstein would never again travel to Palestine, he continued to support efforts to promote Jewish settlement and especially the Hebrew University. Upon the death of Israel's first President, Chaim Weizmann, Abba Eban, the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, formally offered him the post. Although deeply moved by the offer, he did not believe himself qualified for such a position. (New York Times, Nov. 19, 1952, p. 1) Although Einstein used a postcard for the Red Star Line, Belgenland, he did not sail aboard the ship as it had yet to make its maiden voyage (April 1923). However, Einstein's last voyage to Europe was aboard the Belgenland in 1933. Arriving in Antwerp, he learned that Adolf Hitler had become Chancellor of Germany. Realizing that he could never reside in Germany again, he left, first for Great Britain, and then the United States, where he became a citizen in 1940. Extremely Rare. Letters written by Einstein during his only visit to Palestine are virtually unknown and no examples have appeared at auction for the past forty years. The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein record only two other pieces of manuscript (apart from his travel diary) written during this period: a February 11, 1923 ALS to Chaim Weizmann written from Haifa (location of original not presently known) and an ALS, February 14, 1923, written to Arthur S. Eddington (now part of the collections of the University of Cambridge). Although Einstein was known to accomplish drawings, signed self-portraits are virtually unknown. We are aware of only three other examples, none of which have ever sold at public auction (nor are we aware of a private sale of the same). "
