Edition de luxe, limited to 50 copies, each of which contained: a frontispiece portrait of Loubier by Orlik; a red and black title-page printed by E. R. Weiss; a print by F. W. Kleukens signed in pencil; an etching by Marcus Behmer signed in pencil; an etching by Heinrich Wolff signed in pencil; prints of three bookplates designed by Ehmcke, signed in ink; an original full-page wood-cut by Rudolf Koch, signed in pencil with his symbol; and an original wood-cut by E. R. Weiss. The text consists of essays on books and (mostly) bookbindings by the most respected experts of the day. Apparently quite rare, I have never seen another copy and no copy (even of the trade edition) is recorded at auction.

''Carl Moberg / Moshult!'' skrivet med blyerts på titelbladet; sannolikt Mobergs fars signatur. Dedikation: ''Till Kristina -- en bok som är i behov av kärleksfullt bemötande -- från Författaren som minne av den 22 juli 1954''. Mottagaren Kristina Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005) hade under 40-talet och möjligen även senare en kärleksaffär med Moberg, som döpte Kristina i Utvandrarserien efter henne. Kärleksaffären upptäcktes via en svit om 30 böcker som Moberg dedicerat till henne. I exemplaret av Utvandrarna (1949) skriver han: "Till Kristina, min älskade, som lånat sitt namn åt den kvinnliga huvudpersonen i denna bok, med tacksamhet och kärlek från Författaren", ett intyg som upprepas så sent som 1969 i pocketupplagan av Utvandrarserien: " Den 29/3 1969. / Till Kristina -- hon som givit sitt namn åt den kvinnliga huvudpersonen i utvandrarromanen och till Minnet / med innerlig tillgivenhet från Författaren", vilket visar att hon var fullt närvarande i hans tankevärld under hela denna tid och därmed mycket väl kan ha påverkat hans senare litterära produktion. Vad som ytterligare talar för detta är exemplaret av Vår ofödde son, en pjäs från 1945 som behandlar abort-problematik. Detta är den enda av böckerna som Kristina låtit binda in i ett påkostat rött skinnband, med en pärmficka längst bak där hon samlat tidningsartiklar om boken och dess författare. I Kristinas exemplar av den danska utgåvan av samma bok, utgiven 1947, finns en dedikation från översättaren: "Kaera Kristina! / Denne Bog, den til Dels handler om dig, sendes dig til Erindring -- ikke om Forfattaren, men om Oversatteren. / Din Carl Erik''

Coloured frontispiece, 100 black and white plates from photographs, sketch maps in the text. Armorial bookplate of A. H. Richardson, who has inscribed his name in ink at the foot of the front cover and on the top edges; bookplate of J. B. Prentice on verso of front free endpaper. Binding a little used, small stain at head of spine, scattered foxing. First edition. Wild had been with Scott on the Discovery, was with Mawson in 1911?-14, "and was a close friend of Shackleton on both the Nimrod expedition of 1907-09 and second-in-command on the Transantarctic Expedition of 1917-17... Wild joined Shackleton on his final voyage to the Antarctic in 1921-23 but the explorer's death sapped Wild's desire to continue" (Howgego). A "handsome publication" reproducing "the last photographs of Shackleton to be taken" (Taurus). Wild emigrated to South Africa, and drifted into bankruptcy and alcoholism. He died destitute in Johannesburg in 1939.

She founded the anarchist journal MOTHER EARTH in 1906. Deported to Soviet Russia during the Red Scare of 1919, Goldman became disillusioned with the Bolsheviks' treatment of Russian anarchists.

Alter Zwillingsbruder, wie sollten politische Wandlungen unser Verhältnis beeinträchtigen, da wir doch als Menschen, nicht als politische Komparsen mit einander verbunden sind? Du bist mein Freund, nicht weil, sondern trotzdem Du Jude bist. Ich stehe zu der Revolution, weiß aber auch und muß es eben hinnehmen, daß Zeiten der Gährung auch Trübes mit hervorwerfen. Das weißt Du so gut wie ich. This is copy no. 142 of a first numberred impression of 1500 copies printed on rag paper and bound in art canvas. Printed and bound in Great Britain by William Brendon and Son, The Mayflower Press, Plymouth. 11 x 8.5 inches. Putty-colored buckram binding with small, crisp gilt-stamped design to the front board and fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Exceptionally clean binding. Very lightly bumped spine head and tail, and with gently bumped corners. Hinges slightly tender although the text block is firmly bound in. With xvi and 240 numbered pages of text, interspersed with B&W figures, and with 128 illustrations appearing on 59 full-page plates, of which 11 of the illustrations are in color. The plates with tissue guards and the tissue guards generally in pristine condition. The tissue guards with explanatory notes. The plates on medium-weight, semi-glossy stock. Note the following printer's error: Plate 53 is misnumbered as Plate 52, and Plate 55 is misnumbered as Plate 56. There are NO missing plates. The pastedowns are very clean. There is a semi-split just after the limitations page near the front of the book and there is a semi-split along the rear hinge. The splits appear to be cosmetic issues inasmuch as the cloth lining appears to be intact. Very small, ink library stamp from the Avery Brundage Collection to the bottom of the title page. Same stamp also to the top, fore and bottom edges and NOT on the pages themselves. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Very gently read. No remainder marks. A Very Good copy. All in all a desirable copy of an authoritative work, the purpose of which is to explain and illustrate as many varieties of Ming ceramic wares as possible.         Photo Albums - Seven (7) Travellogue Albums of Post-War France Over 8 Years - Includes Photos, Sketch Drawings, Postcards, Magazine Clippings and Typescripts

      France, 1923. France, 1923-1931. Profusely illustrated travellogue of an Englishman's extensive annual travels to France during the exhilarating post-war decade of cultural revival. 8vo. 7 unique volumes titled to front, fair journals containing a total of 363 pages in typescript, 97 original photographs, 628 postcards, 70 magazine clippings, and 28 manuscript drawings. Also with 1 signed etching by Emile André Leroy. Five volumes bound oblong album style, half calf over green cloth and tilted in gilt to front; one volume bound oblong album style with brown cloth boards and manuscript label; the first is an 8vo journal in blue cloth boards. Very good condition, an uncommonly prodigious and beautifully detailed memoir, both informative and entertaining, four volumes conclude with the writer's original signature. The author is identified as G. Fuller England, is an eloquent writer and skilled pencil artist. Evidently of the middle or upper class, he travelled by boat, rail, chauffeured motorcar, and also by air, the latter of which was a costly choice during the Golden Age of flight, and only afforded by the wealthy. His travel companion and co-author, contributing the historical sketches, is his cousin E. Newton Fuller [possibly the solicitor Edward Newton Fuller associated with Edward Turner Payne in the firm Payne & Fuller, and later with Robert Hugh Whittington in Bath until 1923]. Abundant in detail and superbly written, the travellers visit and describe innumerable monuments and remnants of ancient eras, while observing and reflecting upon the people and customs in all regions of the country. Cultural revival, especially in upper and middle classes, was the resounding theme of the 1920s in France. A nation redefining itself, with the notion of dissolving pre-war values, the decade coined "Les Années Folles" was a time of extravagance, debauchery, unbridled exuberance, and the quest for personal freedom. The economic crisis of 1929, however, had a social and political impact that put an end to this period of lack of concern and joie-de-vivre. All along, tradition remained to be seen and French hospitality was splendid, as described herein. In contrast, Old World France is illustrated with descriptions and views of Romanesque churches, allegorical embellishments, elaborate Renaissance architecture, ancient fortresses and feudal castles, picturesque villages with cobblestone lanes, farm lands with traditionally hospitable inns, colonial hotels, historic abbeys, monumental bridges, and the like. The traveller possessed a keen interest in architecture and antiquity. Too voluminous to describe in full, the following is a general summary of the volumes, with occasional samples of content: Holiday Jottings in Northern France [August 1923] 82 pages, plus 11 pencil sketches for illustration. The writer's first voyage begins with an entertaining account of the ship hitting rocks near Jersey and all passengers being disembarked, eventually continuing the voyage and anchoring near the old fort and lighthouse of Cap Fréhel in northern Brittany. The first night was spent in the walled port city Saint-Malo. Lovely sketches feature nautical scenes, ancient castles, and French fashion. Diary of a Trip to Auvergne & Central France [July - August] 1925 52 pages, 90 photographic postcards, 16 magazine clippings, and 2 pencil sketches. The final page makes note that a fellow passenger on the voyage home was Monsieur Aristide Briand, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was on his way to London for peace talks with British statesman Mr. Austen Chamberlain, the latter of whom would be granted the Nobel Peace prize for the results of said conference. [Together with Briand of France, Chamberlain and Stresemann met at the town of Locarno in October 1925 and signed a mutual agreement (together with representatives from Belgium and Italy) to settle all differences between the nations by arbitration, and never resort to war. For his services, Chamberlain only awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and also made a Knight of the Order of the Garter.] Wanderings in France [July - August] 1927 42 pages typed, plus a two page manuscript index, 39 original photographs (one measuring 28 x 22cm), 144 photographic postcards, 3 artistic colour postcard views, 15 magazine clippings, and 6 pencil sketches. The travellers seize opportunities to visit lesser known towns. Also of interest, a postcard scene illustrates the forced closure of the Grande Chartreuse monastery and expulsion of priests in 1903, the writer noticing that the regiment escorting the clergy were equipped with skis, which by the 1920s had become customary in numerous alpine regiments. An original photograph is taken of the 'fontaine des éléphants', historically named the 'colonne de Boigne' erected in 1838 by sculptor Victor Sappey to commemorate Count Benoît de Boigne in India, who earned fortune and fame in India with the Marathas. An excerpt from the text, written at Nimes while looking into one of the courts of the Palais de Justice: "where a flashily dressed lady had just been convicted of beating a girl of 16, for which she was given 6 months imprisonment" Riverside Rambles in Central France [Summer] 1928 60 pages typed, with a manuscript index placed within, illustrated with 29 original photographs 100 photographic postcards, 14 magazine clippings, 6 pencil sketches, and 1 beautiful ink drawing frontis of a river scene in Paris. Another well balanced volume of past and present, the writer describes the famous Cahors bridge which he presents in two fine sketches and describes over two pages and the 'Trésor of Clery' which was pillaged in 1926 when a gold monstrance of great value was taken. At the village of Argentat the travellers settle in lovely inn and recount a charming story of the experience. Some excerpts from other experiences: [Château de Sully-sur-Loire]"... to Sully, a delightfully quaint old town whose chief feature is the splendid chateau surrounded by a wide and deep moat... a typically feudal castle with high pitched roof... Joan of Arc came here with Charles VII, and was detained as a sort of hostage by de Tremouaille, Charles' favourite, who distrusted her, but she escaped, and carried out her self-imposed task of relieving Orleans in conjunction with Dunois... Unfortunately visitors are not allowed entry, but it is possible to get a very good idea from outside... I was sketching..." "It was at Souillace that we saw wine served in wooden 'pitchets' - jugs made of oak like a miniature barrel beautifully bound with copper and having a split cane let in to the metal as a handle..." "Beaulieu is off the beaten track and is seldom visited, but there are few more imposing buildings of its size in France, than the grand old Benedictine Abbey... one of the ancient fortified churches of the XII century..." A Burgundian Holiday [July - August] 1929 40 pages typed, illustrated with 3 original photographs 109 photographic postcards, 2 magazine clippings, 2 pencil sketches. A substantial part of this volume is devoted to Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy and environs. He also visits Lyon, Nevers, Autun, Blois, and a lesser visited castle en route to Romorantin, the Chateau de Moulins. Excerpt from the text: "... the world famous Hotel Dieu. One of the first few hospitals in France dating from the XV century (1443)... we had further opportunity of seeing the actual technical working of the institution from a professional point of view..." Wayside Sketches of Old World France with Pen & Pencil [1930] 60 pages typed, plus 1 page manuscript index, illustrated with 26 large original photographs (most measuring approximately 24 x 18cm), 60 photographic postcards, 13 magazine clippings, 1 pencil sketch printed in lithograph. A manuscript letter is tipped in, written in French from abbot Belin of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre Mozac, and dealing with a book on the archaeology of France. From Paris, the traveller sets out to examine medieval architecture, the Château de Fontainebleau, the Château de Bourbon-l?'Archambault in Auvergne, the Château de Tournoël, the Château Saint-Étienne in Aurillac, the picturesque medieval village of Estaing, the fortified town of Cordes-sur-Ciel, and ancient cathedrals, each garnering his undivided attention for a time. A Holiday in Normandy & Anjou [Summer] 1931 27 pages, plus 1 page manuscript index, illustrated with 122 postcards, 10 magazine clippings, and a scarce collectible etching. Lacking first page of text, otherwise very good. This volume features an original etching of the fortified gate of the Cordeliers in Falaise, by French sculptor and artist Emile André Leroy (1899-1953), signed by the artist in pencil and measuring approximately 12 x 16 cm. Several monasteries and cathedrals are visited on this final sojourn which concludes where it started, in Paris. The writer's final statement embodies the purpose and fulfillment of the multiple journeys, to "... recall the glamour of the past, and all the charm and grace of that enchanted land." . Very Good.

Ffep inscribed: "To my friend Ed Borein, / the greatest storyteller in California. / Dane Coolidge / Berkeley, Cal. / April 27, 1923."John Edward Borein (1872-1945), son of a California deputy sheriff, was sketching Western subjects at the age of five. Encouraged by his family to become an artist, he matriculated at a San Francisco art school, but left after a month to work as a cowboy. In this pursuit he became highly proficient, although, encouraged by his awed fellow cowhands, he continued to draw and sketch in his spare time and, in 1896, began to see his work in print. He eventually developed an enviable competence as a watercolorist, but gave up painting in oils when he compared his work--unfavorably--with that of his friend Charles M. Russell.In 1906 Borein moved to New York to work as an illustrator, and studied etching--which would become a speciality--at the Art Students' League. It was this which set him apart from his peers in Western art, and nearly 400 of his etchings are recorded. Seeped in the history and allurements of the West, he returned to California permanently in 1919, and it is to his native state that much of his work relates. By the 1930s his watercolors, produced with sparkling, vivid colors and conveying a flavor of authenticity without pretension, were enormously popular; they number over 1,000 examples. He is known as an artist "who got the details right" and his readily identifiable personal style sets him apart from others who depict the landscapes, the inhabitants, the history, and the sun-drenched aridity of the American West. Crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. The boards with a gorgeous Japan-paper in a striated design of orange and forest green. The boards are very thick. Virtually no shelf rubbing along the bottom edge of the boards, and with minor rubbing here and there along the fore edge and the top edge. The off-white parchment generally in fine condition. The text block is bound in with exceptional sturdiness. There is a red, so-called "chop" mark to the title page from a previous owner, to a handsome effect, with #2/1 under it in a neat blue ink hand. On the rear pastedown in the lower corner appears a very small and discreet paste-on stamp from a San Francisco bookseller. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Gently read. A Very Good copy.         Photo Album - British Special Services Squadron on a World Cruise Visiting Ports of Call Around the World

      World, 1923. Cruise Around the World, November 1923 - September 1924. The official photograph album produced for and made available for the crew who participated in "The Empire Cruise," a ten month World Cruise made by the British Special Services Squadron. Contains 348 gelatin silver print photographs with typescript captions, mounted with onto cardstock leaves. Also with a full page colour map of the voyage. Oblong 8vo. album made by Empire Photographic Publishing Co. of London, measuring approximately 31 x 25 x 3 cm, navy blue suede boards, titled in gilt to front, also with a clever gilt vignette of a crown formed of ships' sails. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 4,5 x 7,5 cm, and the largest being the frontis portrait of King George V measuring approximately 5 x 18 cm. Scant few images mildly age-toned, otherwise very good, original condition. In 1923-1924, HMS Hood and the Special Service Squadron sailed around the world on The Empire Cruise, visiting many ports of call in the countries which had fought together during the First World War. Departing from Devonport on 27 November 1923, the squadron's first stop was Sierra Leone. Other ports of interest include Durban and Zanzibar in Africa, Singapore, seven ports in Australia and Hobart in Tasmania, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, nine port on the coasts of South America from Rio de Janeiro to Valparaiso and Callao, the Falkland Islands, San Francisco, Halifax, and many more in between. The fleet would separate at various points of the cruise with the battleships passing through the Panama Canal, while some of the battlecruisers ventured around Cape Horn. The album begins with a large portrait of King George V, followed by photographs of the vessels and their commanders, and a map of the sea routes taken by HMS Hood, HMS Repulse, HMS Dehli, HMS Danae, HMS Dragon, HMS Dauntless, and also HMAS Adelaide which joined the other vessels at Sydney. A privilege to any one who participated, they were received with exuberant, unique and festive style in various countries. Capturing indigenous tradition, important colonial buildings, monuments, interactions of the crew onshore and visitors onboard the ships, some highlights and unusual images include a horse-drawn carriage used for Royal Mail delivery in rural Australia, Maori dancers and a fire making display, Fijian men in warrior costume, a Samoan chief, two of the vessels at Honolulu's port, Butchart Gardens and the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the Pacific side of Canada, a dragon boat, San Francisco harbour and the Golden Gate, traversing the Panama Canal which had only opened ten years prior in 1914, a tour of Jamaica, views of Quebec, Newfoundland, and Halifax, and finally, HMS Hood firing a 15 inch gun at sea. V.C. Scott O'Connor, a journalist who was onboard HMS Hood for the global affair, wrote an account of the voyage and of his experiences in "The Empire Cruise," published in 1925.. Very Good.

Lissitzky designed title-pages for each of Mayakovsky's poems, which are some of his most frequently quoted poetic works, including "Left March," "Ramble," "The Third International," "The Art Army," "Love," and "The Story of Red Riding Hood." Lissitzky described the inspiration that prompted the innovative design of Dlya Golosa in his essay "Typographical Facts": "To make it easier for the reader to find any particular poem, I use an alphabetical (i.e. thumb-indexed) index. The book is created with the resources of the compositor's type case alone. The possibilities of two-colour printing (overlap, cross hatching and so on) have been exploited to the full. My pages stand in much the same relation to the poems as an accompanying piano to a violin. Just as the poet in his poem unites concept and sound, I have tried to create an equivalent unity using the poem and typography" (cf. Lissitzky-Kuppers, #94-108). What resulted was an outstanding typographical success. Lightly dust-soiled with minor creasing to wrapper corners, tabs a bit dust-soiled, else in remarkably good condition. This is copy No. 838. T.E.G. With xx and 20 numbered pages of text. Followed by 152 plates, many of which are full page, most in color and the remainder in B&W. Most of the plates with tissue guards, and the plates and guards are in near fine condition. 11.25 x 8.75 inches. Half-parchment, including the spine and the corners. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, and with noticeably bumped upper corners. Fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. The boards with a gorgeous Japan-paper in a checkerboard design of soft purple and soft green. The boards are very thick. Some shelf rubbing along the bottom edge of the boards, and with rubbing here and there along the fore edge and the top edge. The off-white parchment generally in very good condition though somewhat age-darkened. Note that the front gutter is cracked along the entirety. Nevertheless, the text block remains well bound in, owing to very strong inside hinges original to the book There is a 1/2 x 1/4 inch blemish on the half title page, as if a tape residue, fairly trivial. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Gently read. A Very Good Minus copy. Scarce in any condition. Somewhat rare and hard to find, Limited Edition

Previous owner's name and the date 1926 written neatly in pen on front free endpaper. Pages very clean, a little browned, no marks, no tears, made with fine, thick-stock paper. Illustrated throughout with maps and charts (many folding). Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown of Volume I. Extremities a touch rubbed and bumped, endpapers of Volumes III and III lightly browned, edges tanned and with occasional spotting. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions; Volume V second state with the erroneous errata at p. 9. Volume V inscribed on the first blank: "Richard Hopkins from Winston S. Churchill, 6.3.29". Published on 7 March 1929, this is one of more than 100 pre-publication copies "sent out to Cabinet colleagues, friends and others who had helped him in the preparation of the volumes" (Cohen). Hopkins was a career civil servant who first encountered Churchill in 1913, when, as a young Treasury official, he worked with him on the negotiation of the Anglo-Persian Oil Agreement. Hopkins became key player in the successful post-War reorganization of the Inland Revenue, rising to chairman of the board in 1922: "As chairman Hopkins was renowned for his skills as a negotiator and for the goodwill he generated among junior and senior colleagues alike" (ODNB) In 1927 Churchill, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, impressed by Hopkins's "emollient and pragmatic" approach (Clarke "Churchill's Economic Ideas 1900-1930", in Blake and Louis Churchill, p. 91) appointed him as Controller of Finance and Supply Services at the Treasury; "for eighteen years [Hopkins was] the chief Treasury adviser on all matters concerning financial policy and the control of government expenditure. At a time when the scale of national finances and the economic role of government were transformed, he served six chancellors of the exchequer and confronted policy problems which ranged in time and scope from negotiations on reparations and war debts to the financial crisis of the early 1930s, rearmament, and finally a second war … [playing] a key rôle in the transition from an essentially laissez-faire to a modern managed economy in Britain … a rôle [which] proved particularly decisive during the Second World War … [beginning] with his efforts to bring Keynes into the Treasury as a wartime adviser, from which ensued many critical domestic and external economic policy decisions" (ODNB) A treasured colleague, Hopkins was close to being the embodiment of what Churchill referred to in his speech to the Commons on 22 January 1944 as the irresistible power of departmental advice "based on knowledge and on systematized and organized currents of opinion". Volume II with bookplate of the British politician and author Woodrow Wyatt (1918?-1997) to front pastedown.

        Original watercolour for The Ship That Sailed to Mars. "The Iron Hills"

      [Kimberley, South Africa, sometime before, 1923]. From The Ship That Sailed to Mars. Original watercolour on paper (visible image 245 × 206 mm; framed 410 × 370 mm). Together with original leaf of accompanying calligraphic text: the descriptive text to accompany this plate (text in black with initial letters and decorations in blue). Two items individually matted, glazed and framed. Born in Northumberland, Timlin emigrated to South Africa, where he studied art and practised as an architect. The Ship That Sailed to Mars (1923) is his only published book, a fantastical illustrated gift book that rivalled those of Rackham, Dulac, Goble and Nielsen. The book was published by George Harrap, who had earlier published Willy Pogany, and they followed a similar format here, reproducing Timlin's original calligraphic text mounted, like the plates, on grey matte paper. Timlin's book is divided in three parts: detailing the building and outfitting of the ship, the journey, and the arrival. "The Iron Hills" is the fourteenth plate of the third part, showing a dragon flying over dark mountain peaks.
