Closed tears to the upper front cover of Vol.2 and 3.All three wrappers have undergone NO restoration whatsoever and are the correct First Issue state and all are protected in removable Brodart archival covers.A very good set. Howard Carter's own account of the most spectacular archaeological discovery of the 20th century:'In the summer of 1922 Carter persuaded Carnarvon to allow him to conduct one more campaign in the valley. Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamun on 4 November 1922. Carnarvon hurried to Luxor and the tomb was entered on 26 November. The discovery astounded the world:a royal tomb, mostly undisturbed, full of spectacular objects. Carter recruited a team of expert assistants to help him in the clearance of the tomb, and the conservation and recording of its remarkable contents. On 16 February 1923 the blocking to the burial chamber was removed, to reveal the unplundered body and funerary equipment of the dead king.Unhappily, the death of Lord Carnarvon on 5 April seriously affected the subsequent progress of Carter's work.In spite of considerable and repeated bureaucratic interference, not easily managed by the short-tempered excavator, work on the clearance of the tomb proceeded slowly, but was not completed until 1932.Carter handled the technical processes of clearance, conservation, and recording with exemplary skill and care. This popular account of the work was published in three volumes, The Tomb of Tutankhamen (1923?"33),the first of which was substantially written by his principal assistant, Arthur C. Mace' (ODNB).Volume One with105 illustrations, Volume Two with 153 illustrations and Volume Three with 156 illustrations. These illustrations are in fact photographs by Harry Burton of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. An extremely scarce set to find with their original wrappers and at the time of listing, the only available set on the market without restoration.More images and details are available on request.Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

Die Tanze des Lasters, des Grauens und der Ekstase

Pl. XVI. Wien, [1923]. 72pp - Pl. XVI. Wien, [1923]. 72pp. One of the classics of 1920s Weimar decadence, this collection of prose, poetry, photography and artwork presents the lives of two of the most controversial characters of the period. Berber and Droste performed their macabre "dances of vice, horror & ecstasy" to sold out performances before they were forced into leaving the country. Tänze des Lasters, des Grauens und der Ekstase' has been described as "saturated with an air of morbidity and decadence; death, dreams, torture, sex and sensuality proliferate often combined with a narcissistic homosexual undertone." One reviewer has noted "it is difficult to imagine, let alone find, a more bizarre and complex relation between dance, writing, speech, nudity, and image than that found in this little book". It certainly seems that few copies of the original edition appear to have survived, its relatively small print run (1,000 copies) its size, and fragile paper binding having made it susceptible to damage. Very good in original illustrated vellum boards, light wear to covers, light cracking to spine, one of 1,000 numbered copies (this example is #384). Quite uncommon.         Lists of Merchant Vessels of the United States. 1868 - 1969

Washington,: GPO, various dates. Color and b/w plates, ills. Various paginations. A century?'s worth of Lists of Merchant Vessels, lacking only a few years, and with no extended gaps. All the texts and most of the bindings are in Good - VG condition, with the exception of the 1860s and 70s, which were bound in fragile leather which has split, leaving the boards present but detached. Many are removed from various customs houses, depositories and government and institutional libraries. Aside from title page stamps almost none of them are marred by excessive library markings. One volume, 1923, is lacking pp. 122-138, which were never bound in. The rest are complete. Missing volumes are: 1867 (the First Annual), 1869, 1870, 1873, 1875, 1876, 1880, 1883, 1886, 1891, 1933, 1935, 1937, 1940, 1947-49, 1960, 1965-67. The very rare 1917 volume is present in this run. Each volume provides physical specifications for every registered seagoing vessel and yacht, whether sailing or steam, along with number, signal letters, where and when built, home port, and name of owner. This is an unparalleled research tool for treasure hunters, historians and maritime researchers of all sorts. 81 volumes, postage at cost.

        Sonnwendzeit". Rosenstilleben.

      - Aquarell, auf dünnem Velin, auf chamoisfarbenem festem Velin aufgezogen, rechts unten monogrammiert „L.H.J.". 5,8:4,6 cm. Fotokopierte Bezeichnung im Passepartout eingeheftet: „1923. / 21.6. / „Sonwendzeit."

        Reminiscences Of A Stock Operator.

George H. Doran Company, New York 1923 - First edition of this Wall Street classic. Octavo, original orange cloth. In very good condition with the rubbing to the crown and foot of the spine and overall wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. First published in 1923, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is the most widely read, highly recommended investment book ever. Generations of readers have found that it has more to teach them about markets and people than years of experience. It tells the thinly disguised biography of Jesse Livermore, a remarkable character who first started speculating in New England bucket shops at the turn of the century. Livermore, who was banned from these shady operations because of his winning ways, soon moved to Wall Street where he made and lost his fortune several times over. What makes this book so valuable are the observations that Lefèvre records about investing, speculating, and the nature of the market itself. "A must-read classic for all investors, whether brand-new or experienced" (William O'Neil). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

. . Einband und Titel zeichnete Emil Praetorius " sowie kalligraphischer Widmung auf dem Vorsatz: "Zum 20-jährigen Bestehen der Katholischen Schulorganisation Deutschlands ihrem weitschauenden Gründer und zielbewussten Führer Altreichskanzler Dr. Wilhelm Marx in dankbarer Verehrung die Katholische Schulorganisation in Bayern, Landesverband der katholischen Elternvereinigungen Bayerns, Schwerd / Zinkl". - "Warum handgebunden?

The Wares of the Ming Dynasty

London, England: Benn Brothers, Limited, 1923. The author's preface is dated January 1923. This is copy no. 142 of a first numberred impression of 1500 copies printed on rag paper and bound in art canvas. Printed and bound in Great Britain by William Brendon and Son, The Mayflower Press, Plymouth. 11 x 8.5 inches. Putty-colored buckram binding with small, crisp gilt-stamped design to the front board and fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Exceptionally clean binding. Very lightly bumped spine head and tail, and with gently bumped corners. Hinges slightly tender although the text block is firmly bound in. With xvi and 240 numbered pages of text, interspersed with B&W figures, and with 128 illustrations appearing on 59 full-page plates, of which 11 of the illustrations are in color. The plates with tissue guards and the tissue guards generally in pristine condition. The tissue guards with explanatory notes. The plates on medium-weight, semi-glossy stock. Note the following printer's error: Plate 53 is misnumbered as Plate 52, and Plate 55 is misnumbered as Plate 56. There are NO missing plates. The pastedowns are very clean. There is a semi-split just after the limitations page near the front of the book and there is a semi-split along the rear hinge. The splits appear to be cosmetic issues inasmuch as the cloth lining appears to be intact. Very small, ink library stamp from the Avery Brundage Collection to the bottom of the title page. Same stamp also to the top, fore and bottom edges and NOT on the pages themselves. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Very gently read. No remainder marks. A Very Good copy. All in all a desirable copy of an authoritative work, the purpose of which is to explain and illustrate as many varieties of Ming ceramic wares as possible. This book may be regarded as a sequel to the author's book, Early Ceramic Wares of China.. First British Edition. Buckram. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Here's a real Hollywood novelty from the silent era. During Valentino's Very Artistic period when he was married to Natacha Rambova, this very singular 143-page volume was published in its first and only edition. Valentino actually claimed that these gems of verse had been set down by automatic writing and were in fact the work of his Indian spirit guide Black Feather.. 1st Edition. Hardcover.         Inom Baggemosa ägogränser. Bygdehistorier.

Växjö, 1923. Originalupplaga. 21x14 cm. 126 s.
