        Pierre Or, The Ambiguities

London: Constable, 1923. The first publication of one of Herman Melville's most enigmatic works since the second printing of 1855. Tall, thick 8vo: viii,505,[1]pp. Publisher's slate-blue cloth, spine and covers paneled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut, coated maroon end papers, title page in French blue and black. Subscription card for Constable's Monthly List laid in. About Fine (page margins tone), a superb copy, binding square and tight, pages clean and crisp. BAL 13680. Volume IX of the 16-volume Works of Herman Melville, Standard Edition, publication of which (in an edition of only 750 copies) marked a key event (along with publication of Raymond Weaver's 1921 biography, Herman Melville: Man, Mariner and Mystic) in the Melville revival of the 1920s, which rescued the neglected writer from obscurity and secured him a prominent place in the American literary canon. "Pierre is the most controversial of Herman Melville's novels. The work was condemned by contemporary reviewers, and readers since then have had difficulty in understanding the book and in determining Melville's intent. Critics still differ widely, with some regarding Pierre as a failure and others praising it as Melville's masterpiece. . . . The entire novel is riddled with contradictions and puzzles, so it is well to remember its subtitle--The Ambiguities." (enotes) N. B.       - Approximately 120 pages of neatly written manuscript entries.11¾ x 10¾ inches cloth boards. Covers worn and nearly detached, spine perished; some stray markings within; internally very good. Phenomenal manuscript volume kept by Rev. George Pannebecher (aka Pannebecker) , which spans five decades from 1923 to 1973. The Pennsylvania-born clergyman attended the University of Pennsylvania and Central Theological Seminary and was a hard-working itinerant preacher in the Reformed Church. Pannebecher, who visits churches of many denominations, rescue missions, school cafeterias, hospitals, grange and Masonic halls, rotary clubs, festivals, television stations, etc. By the 1930s he began turning down invitations due to his increasingly demanding schedule which took him to places such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Miamisburg, and New Knoxville, Ohio; Berne, Bluffton, Danville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Terre Haute, Indiana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Chicago; Detroit; Jeannette and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Gulfport, Mississippi; Milltown, New Jersey; Pass-a-Grille. Florida, etc. Also, trips to places like California and Cuba can be found here. An amazing manuscript log book, covering half a century of engagements. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall

The Tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amen discovered by the late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter.

London Cassell 1923 - First edition. 3 volumes, 8vo. (24 x 17cm), xvi, 231; xxxiv, 269; xvi, 247pp., profusely illustrated with photographic plates, original pictorial cloth gilt, an excellent set. The account of the most famous archaeological discovery of the twentieth century. At the age of seventeen in 1891, Carter went to Egypt where he worked under Flinders Petrie. His great success in drawing the painted reliefs at Deir al-Bahri, Thebes led to his being appointed in 1899 the first chief inspector of antiquities in Upper Egypt, despite having no formal qualifications. His appointment proved a great success, however, and Carter discovered the tomb of King Tuthmosis IV in the Valley of the Kings. Carter's career took a downturn in 1905 when he was held responsible for a skirmish between foreign visitors and Egyptian antiquities guards, which resulted in Carter resigning from the antiquities service. "Carter's rehabilitation came in early 1909 when, on the recommendation of Maspero, he began his association with George Herbert, fifth earl of Carnarvon. Until the First World War they excavated in the Theban necropolis, making important, but unspectacular, discoveries. Carnarvon was then encouraged by Carter to apply for the concession for the Valley of the Kings, surrendered by Davis in 1914. The time was not right, and the prognostications for discovery were not favourable. Davis, Maspero, and others believed that there was nothing of importance left in the valley to be discovered. Carter thought otherwise. A short campaign by Carter in the tomb of King Amenophis III in 1915 produced trifling results, and for the rest of the war until 1917 he was employed as a civilian by the intelligence department of the War Office in Cairo. In 1917 he was at last free to return to working for Carnarvon, and until 1922 he conducted annual campaigns in the Valley of the Kings; but few positive results were achieved. In the summer of 1922 Carter persuaded Carnarvon to allow him to conduct one more campaign in the valley. Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamun on 4 November 1922. Carnarvon hurried to Luxor and the tomb was entered on 26 November. The discovery astounded the world: a royal tomb, mostly undisturbed, full of spectacular objects. Carter recruited a team of expert assistants to help him in the clearance of the tomb, and the conservation and recording of its remarkable contents. On 16 February 1923 the blocking to the burial chamber was removed, to reveal the unplundered body and funerary equipment of the dead king. Unhappily, the death of Lord Carnarvon on 5 April seriously affected the subsequent progress of Carter's work. In spite of considerable and repeated bureaucratic interference, not easily managed by the short-tempered excavator, work on the clearance of the tomb proceeded slowly, but was not completed until 1932. Carter handled the technical processes of clearance, conservation, and recording with exemplary skill and care. A popular account of the work was published in three volumes, The Tomb of Tut.ankh.Amen (1923–33), the first of which was substantially written by his principal assistant, Arthur C. Mace. No archaeological discovery had met with such sustained public interest, yet Carter received no formal honours from his own country." (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Trest D. E. Istoriia gibeli Evropy [Trust D. E. A History of the Demise of Europe]

Berlin: Gelikon, 1923. First Edition. Octavo (23 × 16 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Vladimir Konstantinovsky; 196 pp. Rear wrapper beginning to detach; light wear and a few nicks to overlapping wrapper edges; a fragile title, but still about very good. First edition of Erenburg's dystopian novel about the destruction of Europe by a disillusioned immigrant to America, who sets in motion a plan to gradually exterminate the continent. A vivid expression of Erenburg's "hatred for the mercantile European society based on success, money, and egotism" (Kolesnikoff, 76). A Soviet writer, journalist, and translator who spent much of the 1920-30s in Western Europe, Erenburg (1891-1967) maintained close ties to émigré circles, avant-garde artists, and left-leaning writers while serving as a Soviet press correspondent. His novel The Thaw (Ottepel', 1954) would lend its name to the period of "De-Stalinization" under Khrushchev. He was the most frequently published author of Gelikon, a publishing house founded by Abram Vishniak which specialized in contemporary literature by writers such as Andrei Bely, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Viktor Shklovsky. Scarce in the trade, especially in the original pictorial wrappers by Vladimir Konstantinovsky. His motif was used in 1924 by Karel Teige and Otakar Mrkvicka for the front wrapper of the Czech translation. With additional typographic elements used on the page layout. Getty 162. This unique copy was handled by the legendary Paris collector and book dealer Andrei Savine, who specialized in Russian emigre publications in the 1970-90s; the binding may likewise be by him. His price, which corresponds to the record digitized by UNC Chapel Hill, is written in pencil on the rear fly leaf: "1500,-." It apparently passed through Savine's shop in 1985 and appears to be the only copy of this title he sold.

Photographic frontispiece to each volume, 186 similar plates (many double-sided, and numbered accordingly). First edition of Carter's own account of the most spectacular archaeological discovery of the 20th century. "In the summer of 1922 Carter persuaded Carnarvon to allow him to conduct one more campaign in the valley. Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamen on 4 November 1922. A popular account of the work was published in three volumes, The Tomb of Tutankhamen (1923–33), the first of which was substantially written by his principal assistant, Arthur C. Mace" (ODNB).         ZAGREB: NACRT ZAGREBA. SESTAVIO: ZA NA?ELNIKOVANJA ARHITEKTA VJEKOSLAVA HEINZELA GRADSKI GRADJEVNI ODSJEK [PLAN OF ZAGREB: MADE AT THE TIME OF MAYOR ARCHITECT VJEKOSLAV HEINZEL BY THE URBAN PLANNING OFFICE].

Zagreb , annotations added 1928. 1923 - Lithography in colour with annotations in pen and colour pencils (Very Good, pld repaired tear on the left-hand side) 70 x 82 cm (27.6 x 32.3 inches). A rare official urban plan of Zagreb from 1923 showing the planned expansion of the city, was annotated by the Urban Planning Office engineers in 1928 with prepared new lines of buses, a public transportation first introduced in August 11, 1927. This rare map of Zagreb, made by the Urban Planning Office of the city in 1923, shows the lines of the current cities and the planned new buildings, suburbs, streets and public buildings, marked with red lines. The map was annotated in 1928 by the city engineers with colour pencils, which show newly planned nine bus lines, which would connect suburbs, and eventually newly constructed areas, with the centre of the city. The first bus line in Zagreb, was opened on August 11, 1927. The map was made in the time of Vjekoslav Heinzel (1871 – 1934), an arcitect and the Mayor of Zagreb from 1920 to 1928, best remembered for great development projects of the 1920s that significantly expanded the city. Heinzel's office administration organized the construction of large sections of Zegreb, which are today landmarks of the city, such as Maksimir, the Dolac Market, the Vjekoslav Heinzel Avenue, Peš?enica, Trnje, and Trešnjevka. They also built many hospitals and other public buildings. Zagreb in 1920s and 1930s - The map captures the entire city during what was its historical apology, during the 1920s and ‘30’s, following three generation of transformative change. The ovoid outlines of the medieval city are still clearly visible on Sheets 4 & 7. Until the middle of the 19th Century, Zagreb was largely confined to this small area, being nothing more than a regional centre with population of barely 17,000 (in 1851). However, beginning in the 1850s, spurred by the Croatian National Revival, Zagreb grew steadily in population and wealth, expanding beyond the old town. The railway arrived in 1862, the gasworks were established in 1863 and a modern water system was created from 1878. This spurred industrial growth, and the formation of the new working-class and industrial districts to the west and south of the old city. It also saw improvements to the large plazas extending out of the old city, as well as the construction of grand public edifices, in the Austro-Hungarian style. Indeed, Zagreb acquired monumental architecture, arranged along massive open spaces, akin to Vienna and Budapest. Most notably, the era also saw the re-development of Ban Jela?i? Square, to this day, the heart of Zagreb. While World War I was the death of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it saw the birth of Yugoslavia, making Zagreb the second city of new, large Slavic county. The 1920s and ‘30s saw unprecedented growth, as the city’s population increased from 109,000, in 1921, to 186,000, in 1931, a jump of 64%! This saw the expansion of the city eastwards into the new bourgeoisie neighbourhoods around in the vicinity of the future Meštrovi? Pavilion (itself constructed 1934-8), featuring magnificent examples of Art Deco and Bauhaus architecture. It also saw the creation of the affluent suburbs rising up the slopes of the Medvednica Mountain, to the north of the old town. While Zagreb’s social fabric and economy suffered terribly under the rule of the Fascist Ustaše regime during World War II, the city was largely spared of physical damage. A profound sense of civic pride amongst the city’s residents allowed most of the Zagreb’s pre-WWII historical architecture to be preserved during both the Yugoslav Socialist era and the period since Croatia’s independence in 1991. Mercifully, unlike the situation in many other cities, tasteless and monstrous modern developers have been relegates to the city’s outskirts, largely preserving the Zagreb that is here showcased to the present day.

Kapillarchemie: Eine Darstellung Der Chemie Der Kolloide Und Verwandter Gebiete. Dritte Durchgesehene Und Erweiterte Auflage (Corrected Third Printing, Signed By Irving Langmuir)

Leipzig: Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft, 1923. 3rd Edition 1st Printing. Green Cloth. Very Good. 157 Figures in Text. Xvi, 1225 Pp. Green Cloth Stamped In Black. Book Is Clean, Black Lettering Strong, Front Hinge Lightly Cracked At Front Endpapers, Completely Cracked Before Title Page. Ownership Signature Of Chemist Irving Langmuir On Front Endpaper, Dated Mar 23 1925 In Schenectady. Irving Langmuir (1881 - 1957) Was An American Chemist And Physicist. His Most Famous Publication Is The 1919 Article "The Arrangement Of Electrons In Atoms And Molecules" In Which, Building On Gilbert N. Lewis's Cubical Atom Theory And Walther Kossel's Chemical Bonding Theory, He Outlined His "Concentric Theory Of Atomic Structure". While At General Electric From 1909 To 1950, Langmuir Advanced Several Fields Of Physics And Chemistry, Invented The Gas-Filled Incandescent Lamp And The Hydrogen Welding Technique. Langmuir And Tonks Discovered Electron Density Waves In Plasmas That Are Now Known As Langmuir Waves. He Introduced The Concept Of Electron Temperature And In 1924 Invented The Diagnostic Method For Measuring Both Temperature And Density With An Electrostatic Probe, Now Called A Langmuir Probe And Commonly Used In Plasma Physics. Following World War I Langmuir Contributed To Atomic Theory And The Understanding Of Atomic Structure By Defining The Modern Concept Of Valence Shells And Isotopes. Langmuir Was Awarded The 1932 Nobel Prize In Chemistry For His Work In Surface Chemistry. The Langmuir Laboratory For Atmospheric Research Near Socorro, New Mexico, Was Named In His Honor, As Was The American Chemical Society Journal For Surface Science Called Langmuir. The Langmuir Adsorption Model Explains Adsorption By Assuming An Adsorbate Behaves As An Ideal Gas At Isothermal Conditions. The Freundlich Isotherm Has Two Parameters While Langmuir's Equations Has Only One: As A Result, It Often Fits The Data On Rough Surfaces Better Than The Langmuir's Equations.
