Homerou poiesis Ilias + Homerou poiesis Odysseia [graece].

(35,4 x 23,4 cm) Gr.4°. Lehnacker 15 + 16. Rodenberg 58, 15 + 16. Schauer I, 86 f und II, 70 (mit Abbildung). Franklin S. 163. Tenschert (Pressendrucke) I, 25 -27. OCLC 62245605. Vergl. Martin Hutner und Jerry Kelly in: "A Century for the Century: Fine Printed Books from 1900 to 1999": "12. Bremer Presse; Munich, Germany, 1923 - 1924 Homer - Iliad and Odyssey. Willy Wiegand designed a distinctive Greek type for his Bremer Presse publication of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The type has a degree of movement, letter strokes tilting left and right so that one almost senses a scribal hand. The end margins are generous, and the line count, slightly indented below each block of text, acts as a visual tab for moving on to the next page. Impeccably printed on a beautiful cream Zanders handmade paper, page after page of Homer's epic sweeps along in majestic procession, enabling even those unable to read the language to sense its narrative flow. The timelessness and simplicity of design are classic."

Italy, 1923. Near Fine. Oblong octavo. Black cloth over paper boards measuring 5.5" x 7.5" with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front cover. A collection of 93 sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3" x 4" with captions. Album is near fine with near fine or better photographs.A photo album kept by a woman while traveling in Europe in 1910. The album shows a group of well-to-do women in a tour group around Europe, beginning with their ocean liner trip overseas in September of 1910 on the S.S. Oceania, Italian Line. They started in Naples, went on a "drive" in a horse and carriage, visited the National Museum, and the volcano, Solfatara. They followed this with a trip to Pompeii with photos of well-dressed women walking through the ancient ruins of the city, complete with fancy hats and the occasional parasol. The company eventually traveled to Rome and Venice with photos of the women in gondolas and posing in Saint Mark's square. Continuing on their excursion they visited Paris, Germany, and Switzerland. The photos include a carriage ride to Versailles, the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, and wonderful views of the Alps. On the return trip they stopped in England and watched the guards at St. James' Palace. The final section of photographs is from travels in the United States between 1922 and 1924 as well as a few family snapshots. They include a car journey to the Berkshires, visiting the Hotel Aspinwall in Lenox, Masschusettes, and a zoo in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The photos show women posing around their car, taking silly candid photos, and lounging on rocks and trees in various outdoor settings.A modest but interesting collection of a women's tour group.

Vor Kohls Einberufung zum Kriegsdienst 1916 und in den ersten Jahren nach dem Krieg war der Künstler vor allem als Buchillustrator für Verlage in Leipzig und München tätig.         The Designs for the Sleeping Princess.

London: Benn Brothers Limited,, 1923. A Ballet in Five Acts after Perrault. Music by Tchaikovsky. Preface by André Levinson. Folio. Original vellum-backed blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Mounted colour lithographs to title and list of illustrations, 54 similar plates with captioned tissue-guards, lithographed portrait of Bakst after Picasso. Bookplate of Pamela and Raymond Lister to front pastedown. Head of spine lightly bumped, tips a little bumped and rubbed, front inner hinge sometime reinforced, faint tape-marks to mounts (from manufacture), tissue-guard to Picasso plate slightly creased. A very good copy with bright plates. First edition in English, number 64 of 1,000 copies, of which 500 were for distribution in the USA; first published in French by Brunoff, Paris, 1922. Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes production of the Sleeping Beauty, for which Leon Bakst designed the costumes and set, was first staged in London in 1921 at the Alhambra Theatre, as "The Sleeping Princess". Bakst's designs were a significant contribution to the modern art movement, as much as to theatre or costume design, and the expense of realising them nearly bankrupted Diaghilev.

        Pierre Or, The Ambiguities

London: Constable, 1923. The first publication of one of Herman Melville's most enigmatic works since the second printing of 1855. Tall, thick 8vo: viii,505,[1]pp. Publisher's slate-blue cloth, spine and covers paneled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut, coated maroon end papers, title page in French blue and black. Subscription card for Constable's Monthly List laid in. About Fine (page margins tone), a superb copy, binding square and tight, pages clean and crisp. BAL 13680. Volume IX of the 16-volume Works of Herman Melville, Standard Edition, publication of which (in an edition of only 750 copies) marked a key event (along with publication of Raymond Weaver's 1921 biography, Herman Melville: Man, Mariner and Mystic) in the Melville revival of the 1920s, which rescued the neglected writer from obscurity and secured him a prominent place in the American literary canon. "Pierre is the most controversial of Herman Melville's novels. The work was condemned by contemporary reviewers, and readers since then have had difficulty in understanding the book and in determining Melville's intent. Critics still differ widely, with some regarding Pierre as a failure and others praising it as Melville's masterpiece. . . . The entire novel is riddled with contradictions and puzzles, so it is well to remember its subtitle--The Ambiguities." (enotes) N. B.         Clergyman's Manuscript Ledger of Sermons Spanning 50 Years

      - Approximately 120 pages of neatly written manuscript entries.11¾ x 10¾ inches cloth boards. Covers worn and nearly detached, spine perished; some stray markings within; internally very good. Phenomenal manuscript volume kept by Rev. George Pannebecher (aka Pannebecker) , which spans five decades from 1923 to 1973. The Pennsylvania-born clergyman attended the University of Pennsylvania and Central Theological Seminary and was a hard-working itinerant preacher in the Reformed Church. Over the course of some 50 years, this noted preached delivered more than 4,100 sermons and gave another nearly 400 talks, each one painstakingly logged here. Each engagement is meticulously logged including the title of the sermon, date, time, place, number in attendance, biblical relevance, remarks, etc. Even the prevailing weather on the day of the sermon or talk are provided by Rev. Pannebecher, who visits churches of many denominations, rescue missions, school cafeterias, hospitals, grange and Masonic halls, rotary clubs, festivals, television stations, etc. By the 1930s he began turning down invitations due to his increasingly demanding schedule which took him to places such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Miamisburg, and New Knoxville, Ohio; Berne, Bluffton, Danville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Terre Haute, Indiana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Chicago; Detroit; Jeannette and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Gulfport, Mississippi; Milltown, New Jersey; Pass-a-Grille. Florida, etc. Also, trips to places like California and Cuba can be found here. An amazing manuscript log book, covering half a century of engagements. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall

The Tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amen discovered by the late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter.

London Cassell 1923 - First edition. 3 volumes, 8vo. (24 x 17cm), xvi, 231; xxxiv, 269; xvi, 247pp., profusely illustrated with photographic plates, original pictorial cloth gilt, an excellent set. The account of the most famous archaeological discovery of the twentieth century. At the age of seventeen in 1891, Carter went to Egypt where he worked under Flinders Petrie. His great success in drawing the painted reliefs at Deir al-Bahri, Thebes led to his being appointed in 1899 the first chief inspector of antiquities in Upper Egypt, despite having no formal qualifications. His appointment proved a great success, however, and Carter discovered the tomb of King Tuthmosis IV in the Valley of the Kings. Carter's career took a downturn in 1905 when he was held responsible for a skirmish between foreign visitors and Egyptian antiquities guards, which resulted in Carter resigning from the antiquities service. "Carter's rehabilitation came in early 1909 when, on the recommendation of Maspero, he began his association with George Herbert, fifth earl of Carnarvon. Until the First World War they excavated in the Theban necropolis, making important, but unspectacular, discoveries. Carnarvon was then encouraged by Carter to apply for the concession for the Valley of the Kings, surrendered by Davis in 1914. The time was not right, and the prognostications for discovery were not favourable. Davis, Maspero, and others believed that there was nothing of importance left in the valley to be discovered. Carter thought otherwise. A short campaign by Carter in the tomb of King Amenophis III in 1915 produced trifling results, and for the rest of the war until 1917 he was employed as a civilian by the intelligence department of the War Office in Cairo. In 1917 he was at last free to return to working for Carnarvon, and until 1922 he conducted annual campaigns in the Valley of the Kings; but few positive results were achieved. In the summer of 1922 Carter persuaded Carnarvon to allow him to conduct one more campaign in the valley. Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamun on 4 November 1922. Carnarvon hurried to Luxor and the tomb was entered on 26 November. The discovery astounded the world: a royal tomb, mostly undisturbed, full of spectacular objects. Carter recruited a team of expert assistants to help him in the clearance of the tomb, and the conservation and recording of its remarkable contents. On 16 February 1923 the blocking to the burial chamber was removed, to reveal the unplundered body and funerary equipment of the dead king. Unhappily, the death of Lord Carnarvon on 5 April seriously affected the subsequent progress of Carter's work. In spite of considerable and repeated bureaucratic interference, not easily managed by the short-tempered excavator, work on the clearance of the tomb proceeded slowly, but was not completed until 1932. Carter handled the technical processes of clearance, conservation, and recording with exemplary skill and care. A popular account of the work was published in three volumes, The Tomb of Tut.ankh.Amen (1923–33), the first of which was substantially written by his principal assistant, Arthur C. Mace. No archaeological discovery had met with such sustained public interest, yet Carter received no formal honours from his own country." (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Trest D. E. Istoriia gibeli Evropy [Trust D. E. A History of the Demise of Europe]

Berlin: Gelikon, 1923. First Edition. Octavo (23 × 16 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Vladimir Konstantinovsky; 196 pp. Rear wrapper beginning to detach; light wear and a few nicks to overlapping wrapper edges; a fragile title, but still about very good. First edition of Erenburg's dystopian novel about the destruction of Europe by a disillusioned immigrant to America, who sets in motion a plan to gradually exterminate the continent. A vivid expression of Erenburg's "hatred for the mercantile European society based on success, money, and egotism" (Kolesnikoff, 76). A Soviet writer, journalist, and translator who spent much of the 1920-30s in Western Europe, Erenburg (1891-1967) maintained close ties to émigré circles, avant-garde artists, and left-leaning writers while serving as a Soviet press correspondent. His novel The Thaw (Ottepel', 1954) would lend its name to the period of "De-Stalinization" under Khrushchev. He was the most frequently published author of Gelikon, a publishing house founded by Abram Vishniak which specialized in contemporary literature by writers such as Andrei Bely, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Viktor Shklovsky. Scarce in the trade, especially in the original pictorial wrappers by Vladimir Konstantinovsky. His motif was used in 1924 by Karel Teige and Otakar Mrkvicka for the front wrapper of the Czech translation. With additional typographic elements used on the page layout. Getty 162. This unique copy was handled by the legendary Paris collector and book dealer Andrei Savine, who specialized in Russian emigre publications in the 1970-90s; the binding may likewise be by him. His price, which corresponds to the record digitized by UNC Chapel Hill, is written in pencil on the rear fly leaf: "1500,-." It apparently passed through Savine's shop in 1985 and appears to be the only copy of this title he sold.
