Military][Navy][Travel] Photo Album Depicting Navy Man's Worldwide Tours

1922-1925, Seemingly Everywhere 1922 - 7" x 11". String-tied black cloth over flexible card. 142 pages pages with 490 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts. Most photos measure from 2½" x 3½" to 3" x 5" and all but 14 are captioned. Additionally, 16 pages of typescript bound in before the photos + Epsel's Navy identification card and discharge papers. Album good, because it lacks its front cover and has heavy edge wear; otherwise near fine with near fine or better photos, though some are faded; three photos lacking. An immense photo album detailing a sailor's exploits on three long cruises in the early 1920s. Henry Epsel spent many months at sea and was rarely without a camera. The album starts with his typescript timeline that provides dates, places and short notes of experiences such as in September 1922 when his group participated in getting tens of thousands of refugees out of Smyrna. He loved Australia, writing, "most wonderful welcome and reception ever received by sailors. Beautiful women and girls are plenty here. We were forced into company of girls at all times. Most everything free. It did not pay for us to get drunk as we lost out on too much of good times. "With the exception of Russia, he took photos of nearly every place he visited including Beirut, Jaffa, England, Holland, Cuba, the Panama Canal, California, Athens, Constantinople and more. There are moving images of makeshift cemeteries at Gallipoli and quite a few street shots in many of the cities. We see worshipers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, ruins at Balbak, Syria, and ships filled with refugees. A self proclaimed ladies' man, there's a number of photos of the beauties Epsel left on land including "Rotterdam Special", "my Dutch girl" and "my Spanish queen. "While this is more a travel album than a military one there's well over 100 photos of ships and maneuvers as well as life aboard his ships. A comprehensive look at the world through the eyes of a sailor with a good number of well composed images. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers.         THE BLACK MATE

1922. [one of 50 copies - unopened] A Story. [Edinburgh:] Fifty Copies printed for the Author for Private Distribution only, 1922. Original green cloth. First Edition of what is considered to be Joseph Conrad's first piece of fiction -- though not published until 1922 (fifty copies printed at the Dunedin Press in Edinburgh). Conrad had written this tale in 1886, while still a first mate at sea, as an entry in a "Sailors' Competition" put on that year by George Newnes's magazine Tit-Bits; Conrad did not win, and the draft he submitted is lost. He re-wrote it later, and it appeared in the April 1908 issue of London Magazine; after this 1922 private printing (which Conrad arranged through Thomas J. Wise), it would finally be collected in the posthumous 1925 volume TALES OF HEARSAY.~Conrad never recognized "The Black Mate" as his first fiction, saying "It is an extraneous phenomenon. My literary life began privately in 1890 [actually 1889] and publically in 1895 with ALMAYER'S FOLLY, which is generally regarded as my very first piece of writing. However, the history of the 'Black Mate', its origin, etc., need not be proclaimed on the housetops, and ALMAYER'S FOLLY may keep its place as my first serious work" [quoted in Cagle]. Quoting from Sarkar,~'The Black Mate' is Conrad's disowned child so to speak... Conrad was translating his own psychological problem of an early love, and later he wanted to disown it, particularly when he was an established author, simply because it was a translation of his passion and nothing more... 'The Black Mate' is life and not literature and Conrad was afraid to betray the secret source of his literary achievement so unadorned, as one would be unwilling to disrobe one's bride in full public view.~This is a fine copy, with the leaves still unopened; its only flaw is a bump to the bottom edge of the front board. In our experience, THE BLACK MATE is curiously scarcer than any of the numerous 25-copy booklets that Wise published for Conrad during 1919-1920 (this is the first copy we have offered since 1998); perhaps something happened to many of the 50 copies?         Falbalas & Fanfreluches. Almanach des Modes présentes, passées et futures pour 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926.

5 issues (complete). Paris: Meynial, 1922-26. 5 issues (complete). 8vo, each issue with color vignette to title and 12 color pochoir plates (60 in total), introductory text by the Comtesse de Noailles to 1922, Colette to 1923, Cécile Sorel 1924, Gérard d'Houville 1925, and Baronne de Brimont 1926. Original pictorial wrappers by Barbier, text and plates bound in to matching quarter morocco bindings in red, blue, grey, green (faded) and brown, gilt decorated backstrips, all slightly dusty but very good. Backstrips stamped D.& Co. at foot and each volume with a bookplate "D et C 1805". A complete set of this extraordinary series of fashion plates in superb art deco illustrations. Falbalas et Fanfreluches was the last of Barbier's books to reflect contemporary life. Its special value lies in the unique way in which it catches the tone and mood of the gilded age, the swinging twenties. "George Barbier (1882-1932) was at the forefront of the Art Deco movement, and his images have become icons of an era of unsurpassed glamour, elegance and decadence. His Falbalas et Fanfreluches (1922-1926) graphically display the artist's intense interest in fashion, both of his and earlier ages, as well as his sharp sense of humour: an image of three pearl-draped vamps before a man nervously clutching an apple is titled "Le Jugement de Paris" (Sotheby's, 2008, £5250). Gaudriault p.115.

[Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New York State 1915-1923

Near Fine. Oblong octavo. String tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped in blind on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 141 mostly sepia-tone gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes ranging mostly between 2" x 3" and 3" x 3.5", with several larger, mostly mounted between three and six to the page and largely captioned. Some modest fading on some of the images, one with a touch of damage, but most are near fine or better. A well-photographed album of rural images, the first page devoted to prize cattle (a few other images of cattle and horses appear) but about half of the images are devoted to hunting, trapping, and fishing in the Adirondacks, mostly between 1922 and 1923, with a few others from earlier dates. The hunting images show catches of fish, fox, skunks, muskrats, deer, mink, as well as gun-toting men, and several of hunting dogs (all it seems named "Uncas"). Most of the rest of the album is devoted to images of attractive and cheerful younger people on boats or on trips in automobiles, mostly to rural areas (with Uncas present!). An engaging, interesting, and largely subject specific group of images.

The Propagation of Gravitational Waves" WITH "The Motion of Ellipsoidal Particles Immersed in a Viscous Fluid" in Proceedings of the Royal Society A 102 pp. 268-282 (Eddington); pp. 161-179 (Jeffery), 1922

FIRST EDITION OF EDDINGTON'S CORRECTION (by a factor of two) OF AN ARITHMETIC ERROR IN EINSTEIN'S GRAVITATIONAL WAVE FORMULA. Eddington also initially questioned Einstein's conclusion that gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light, but later changed his mind because the speed of light is the only speed that is independent of the frame of reference. "The problem of the propagation of disturbances of the gravitational field was investigated by Einstein in 1916, and again in 1918" (Eddington, 268). "While correcting the 1916 paper, Einstein discovered that a source emitting gravitational waves will slowly lose energy transported away by these waves. Although in electromagnetism waves are emitted by a dipole source, in general relativity a dipole source is proscribed as it also is in gravitation, in conformity with the momentum conservation law, and therefore gravitational waves cannot be emitted by dipoles but by quadrupoles (Weinstein, General Relativity, 258). In the 1922 paper offered here, Eddington used propagation of the Riemann tensor as a coordinate-invariant characterization of gravitational waves and re-derived Einstein's 1918 quadrupole formula and radiation equations without assuming propagation at the speed of light. "Eddington concluded that there is a discrepancy between the two formulas, his and Einstein's, and explained that it was due to a numerical slip in one or the other investigation. It turned out that the numerical slip was in Einstein's 1918 investigation where he had accidentally introduced the factor 1/2, because of a minor calculation mistake" (ibid; Eddington 1922, 279). ALSO INCLUDED: Jefffery's paper on blood viscosity. "In 1922 Jeffery published a paper describing the motion of ellipsoidal particles in a viscous fluid and setting out what are now known as Jeffery's equations" (Wikipedia). In 1906 and in 1911, Einstein had conducted a theoretical analysis of the viscosity of a dilute suspension of rigid spheres; in this 1922 paper, Jeffery extended that word to ellipsoidal particles. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison and Sons. Series A. Vol. CII (102). Ex-libris bearing the usual markings; very small blank spine label. Bound in brown cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Rubbed and scuffed a bit at the edges, but tightly and solidly bound. Clean and bright throughout save for a small mark at the margin of the Eddington paper (see scan). Very good.

[DEFINITION OF CONSTRUCTIVISM] Konstruktivizm [i.e. Constructivism]

Tver': Tverskoe izdatel'stvo, 1922. [2], 70 pp. 23,5x20 cm. In original letterpress wrappers attributed to Aleksandr Rodchenko. Very good. Occasional pencil markings in the text, a few small tears of the wrappers, tiny bits of the spine missing. First edition. One of 2000 copies. Very rare. Aleksei Gan's Constructivism was the first theoretical work of constructivist movement and became its declaration. He defined its three core principles - tectonics, texture and construction which made artists and architects in his words 'constructors' who must focus on the fusion of art with everyday life to create a system of design where ''everything will be conceived in a technical and functional way'' - a fitting contribution to the great task of building the new communist society. Aleksei Gan (1893-1942) was a Russian avant-grade artist and art theorist, a key figure among Russia's post-revolutionary avant-garde, working across theatre, architecture, graphics and cinema. The book was penned, typeset and printed by Gan himself. His layout is one of the first experiments in Constructivist typography and graphic design. Worldcat locates physical copies in Art Institute of Chicago, Getty, Harvard, Met, MOMA, Princeton, Stanford, NYPL, National Gallery of Art Library, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

      - Moscow: Izd-vo Russkogo teatral'nogo obshchestva, 1922-1923. #1, 1922. 111, [1] pp.: ill. #2, 1923. 111, [1] pp.: ill. 22x17,5 cm. Both in original constructivist wrappers designed by Stenberg brothers. Very good. Some general light soiling of the wrappers, small tears and losses of the spine, front wrapper detached (#2). Full set. #1 of 2000 copies, #2 of 1250 copies. Extremely rare periodical of the 1920s with many valuable materials. These are the only two issues of Kamerny Theatre's periodical. Issues include such interesting materials as photos of the theatre hall, set workshop, touring theatre company, portraits of A. Koonen, E. Uvarova, I. Arkadin and Tairov's portraits, sketch of set and costume designs by P. Kuznetsov for the first theatre's production 'Sakuntala', timetable of the productions, excerpts from set designers diaries, A. Lopukhin drawings, travel notes, K. Bal'mont's article on Kamerny theatre and literature (including his unpublished poem; #2, p.39), and other. Articles by leading experimental theatre experts of the time dedicated to problems of composition, theatre as science and as art, contemporary drama, set design, operetta, European theatre, classical theatre, puppet theatre, and other. The Kamerny Theatre in Moscow was founded by the director Alexander Tairov (1885-1950) in 1914. There he created a fruitful field for experiments by staging foreign plays and including in his productions ballet, opera, music, mime, drama. It first became an alternative to the realism of Konsantin Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theatre. Over the next 35 years, this small, intimate theatre became ''recognized as a major force in Russian theatre''. Among the many reforms associated with the Kamerny are the use of different elements like music, dance, gesture, and the inclusion of chanted or intoned speech as well as constructivist art by Stenberg brothers. In many of its choreographed movements, which made use of offbeat rhythms and atonal sound patterns, the Kamerny anticipated certain dance configurations now associated with modern dance. (Britannica) The theatre was as much loved as criticized during its existence by different parties, and eventually shut down in 1949. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Emmett Lawler

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1922. First Edition. Very Good. Signed by Author. First edition. 315pp. Dark green cloth with light yellow lettering. Near Fine with cloth frayed at head, slight wear at tips, lacking dust jacket. A presentation copy to Chicago Renaissance figure Leroy Goble, passed around a table of rambunctious writers and literary types at Chicago restaurant Schlegl's April 26, 1922. Tully warmly inscribed the book with a message and the date on the front free endpaper. Above that Winesburg, Ohio author Sherwood Anderson offered his "gratitude for one more drink." Beneath that in pencil screenwriter (amongst other pursuits) Ben Hecht crudly caricatured the recipient as a sort of dog or dragon. Pioneering Negro Folk Theatre director Raymond O'Neil neatly added his warm wishes and a signature underneath that. Two unknowns: on the front paste down an unknown cartoonist ("G.M.") caricatured the author in orange crayon, and underneath that is written "O.K. / Sourbelly Smith." Journalist and editor Harry Hansen inscribed the paste down. In a very tiny hand the young friend of Goble, University of Chicago college senior John Gunther (eventually best-known for his Death Be Not Proud) added his name and "regrets that he forgot to bring a copy." So there you have it: a copy of Tully's rare first book signed in the year of publication with a hearty endoresement from the Chicago literati, and the signatures of three other major 20th Century American writers.

Vorlesungen zur Einführung in die Psychoanalyse.

Leipzig, Vienna & Zurich Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag,, 1922. Small octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, rounded spine, top edge red, green cotton page marker. Text in German. Light spotting to spine, faint foxing to edges, minor rubbing to extremities; a very good, bright copy. First pocket or Taschenausgabe edition. Inscribed copy, signed by the author on the front free endpaper 'S. Freud, 1926'. This is the fourth revision of the original text originally published in three parts from 1916–17. The lectures in this work were given at the University of Vienna from 1915 to 1917. These lectures have become the most widely translated of any of Freud's oeuvre, and were first published in English in an American edition as "A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis" in 1920. Peter Gay reports that Freud was dismissive of the lectures, calling them a "coarse work, intended for the masses". Stanley Hall wrote in his preface for the 1920 edition that, "These twenty-eight lectures to laymen are elementary and almost conversational. Freud sets forth with a frankness almost startling the difficulties and limitations of psychoanalysis, and also describes its main methods and results as only a master and originator of a new school of thought can do".
