Zur Theorie der Lichtfortpflanzung in dispergierenden Medien

Berlin: Sitzungsberichten der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1922 Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Zur Theorie der Lichtfortpflanzung in dispergierenden Medien. Complete. Quarto. Offprint from Sitzungsberichten der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Berlin: 1922. First edition in very fine condition. This superb offprint is a separate printing of the Prussian Academy's session reports, here with independent pagination. A small number of such off prints were presented to the author by the publisher as voucher copies. References: Schilpp-Shields 162; Weil 120. This paper gives evidence that Einstein’s ideas on the photon were not able to contradict classical theory. "Since, after 1917, Einstein firmly believed that light-quanta were here to stay, it is not surprising that he would look for new ways in which the existence of photons might lead to observable deviation from the classical picture. In this he did not succeed. At one point, in 1921, he thought he had found a new quantum criterion, but it soon turned out to be a false lead [as demonstrated in this paper]". An excellent example. "The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe.". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination)." . First Thus.

The present highly attractive collection includes his finest costume, poster and theatre designs rendered in vibrant colour, along with fine photographic illustrations of some of the most noted dancers of the time. & & "When we remember this [dance renaissance] movement [in Germany] we think of the Munich art feasts and performances in theaters and concert halls, which came out of this art-loving city thanks to the collaboration of creative artists. Among those who actively and knowingly took part in this movement, the painter Schnackenberg attracted attention with his creations. His planes, figures and drawings make it clear that in dance and pantomime, we can reclaim the right to rejoice in the beauty of the body, the striking pose and the animated movement. Glowing colors delight the eye, joy of life shines in the lightness, and the bright colors conveny to us that the world need not remain grey and colorless if we have the courage to be guided by our yearnings." Gleichen-Russworm: Schnackenberg: Ballet und Pantomime (foreword), 1920. & & Bie was the author of a number of noted works in the fields of both music and dance.

        Design for a portfolio

[Berlin, n.d.].. Original composition in red gouache, black ink and gold metallic paint, on textured ochre leatherette, mounted on a red buckram slipcase, with inserted red buckram chemise and inner sleeve of white Bütten paper, reinforced with loose panels of cardboard. Painted panel: 368 x 275 mm. (ca. 14 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches). Slipcase: 423 x 325 mm. (ca. 16 5/8 x 12 3/4 inches). This large and majestically impressive handmade portfolio represents a variation of Buchholz’s painted wooden relief, “Roter Kreis im Goldkreis,” of 1922, of which Ingrid Weisenmayer has commented “Der Dreiklang der Farben Schwarz, Gold und Rot steigert die Wirkung der einzelnen Farben noch zusätzlich. Es ist charakteristisch, dass Buchholz, der sich so vehement von jeglicher Kunsttradition distanzieren wollte, auf mittelalterliche Traditionen zurückgreift, und diese in einen modernen Kontext stellt” (Weisenmayer, in Gassen/Mengden). Comparison might equally be made with another painted panel of 1923, Buchholz’s “Neue Tafel Nr. 70.” These and similar motifs were reprised by the artist many times, through late in his career. Slight rippling of the panel at foot; a little light rubbing, otherwise in fine, bright condition.

The Novels of Charlotte, Emily, & Anne BrontÎ

London,: J.M. Dent, 1922.. Six volumes, octavo, with a total of 60 colour plates (including frontispieces), one spine label chipped, otherwise a most attractive set in uniform half polished navy calf by Bayntun with ornate gilt spine ornament and crimson labels. Magnificent collected edition of the BrontÎ novels, here presented in splendid early polished calf bindings by the famous English bookbinding firm of Bayntun of Bath. This collected edition is desirable for the sixty full-page colour plates by the fantasy illustrator Edmund Dulac. The BrontÎ novels offered Dulac a challenging change from the fantasy illustration for which he is justifiably famous (indeed, his Arabian Nights, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and Edgar Allan Poe are paradigm works of their genre). The illustrations Dulac prepared for the BrontÎ novels are both subtle and evocative, blending detail and social nuance with the opalescent dreaminess that characterises his previous work.

WORST JOURNEY IN THE WORLD: Antarctic 1910-1913

London: Constable and Company, 1922. 2 volumes. First edition, first issue. 73 panoramas, maps and illustrations, ten of them folding,a number in colours, by Dr. Edward A. Wilson and other members of the expedition. 8vo, publisher’s original linen backed blue paper boards with manila lettering labels on the spines. lxiv, 300, [4]; viii, 301-580, index pp. A pleasing and very well preserved set of this scarce book, and a partially unopened, pristine copy. No chipping or bumping or damage to the bindings. Very clean internally with virtually none of the usual foxing encountered in these volumes, some light, typically seen spotting at half-titles from offsetting of the pastedowns. Spine labels somewhat mellowed from age, one label with light chipping, but both of the original replacement labels remain tipped in as issued and may be used to replace the existing labels as desired. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF A CORNERSTONE TEXT. One of the most sought after and most difficult to find first editions in the polar canon, this is a dramatic and splendidly written account of Scott's 1910-1913 expedition. This is the dramatic and splendidly written account of Scott's last expedition from its departure from England in 1910 to its return to New Zealand in 1913. The expedition was comprised of three actual journeys: the depot journey, during which supplies were laid for the polar trip; the winter journey to Cape Crozier to visit the penguin rookery--the "worst journey" of the title; and the final, tragic attempt on the pole, during which Scott and three others perished. The story of Scott's last expedition is of course a great tale, and Cherry-Garrard uses his considerable skill as a writer to heighten the drama. “And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore. If you are a brave man you will do nothing: if you are fearful you may do much, for none but cowards have need to prove their bravery. Some will tell you that you are mad, and nearly all will say,’What is the use?’ For we are a nation of shopkeepers, and no shopkeeper will look at research which does not promise him a financial return within a year. And so you will sledge nearly alone, but those with whom you sledge will not be shopkeepers: that is worth a great deal. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penquin’s egg.”-Cherry-Garrard. The best written and most enduring account of exploits in the Antarctic. - Taurus Later editions omitted the numerous panoramas, color plates, one map, and most of the photographs.

ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement, and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Malcolm Lowry, and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute, consciously or unconsciously, to Joyce's influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of this century, and he is not alone in that opinion. According to James Spoerri, "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is a fat and inviting volume, the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" (quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale, Sotheby's 1989). While this facsimile is of course not the true first edition, the physical attributes are the same.

THE BOOK OF FAIR WOMEN: THIRTY TWO PLATES FROM PHOTOGRAPHS BY E.O. HOPPE WITH AN INTRODUCTORY ESSAY BY RICHARD KING

(HOPPE, E.O.). Hoppe, Emil Otto & Richard King. THE BOOK OF FAIR WOMEN: THIRTY TWO PLATES FROM PHOTOGRAPHS BY E.O. HOPPE WITH AN INTRODUCTORY ESSAY BY RICHARD KING. New York. ND (1922).: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., First American Edition 1/500. 4to. 1/4 Vellum Over Boards. Photography Monograph. Good -./No Jacket - As Issued. np, 32 tipped-in monochrome gravure illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "The Book of Fair Women" is E.O. Hoppé's spectacularly beautiful 1922 collection of thirty-two dramatically staged and lit modernist photographic portraits of young ladies of standing from around the world - including Miss Marion Davies. It features an introductory essay by Richard King, with the text and captions printed by hand letterpress. An internally bright and sound copy (#386 of 500) of the first American edition with all tipped-in gravures present and secure, and whose fragile vellum spine and internal hinges are completely sturdy and intact. The decorative batik boards along with the edges of the textblock show some typical soiling and age-toning, with much of the edges of the covers worn, chipped and abraded through to the cardboard - especially at the tips. Still in all, this a most presentable age-appropriate example of this lavish production that looks much nicer in hand than it describes. It has been priced accordingly.         Cy Comencent Les Chroniques de Jherusalem Abregies [manuscript facsimile of the original Chronicles of the Crusades in the Austrian National Library]

[Vienna: 1922-24]. Folio. (21 x 11 inches). 34 pages, on fine vellum, written in a batarde hand in red and black ink. 2 full-page and 83 half- page, quarter-page, and column width miniatures illuminated in full color and burnished gold, numerous illuminated initials, all within alternating red and blue borders with gold decoration. Original vellum over bevelled oak boards. Housed in a black morocco backed box. Astounding manuscript facsimile of a celebrated illuminated manuscript account of the Second Crusade. The Croniques de Jherusalem is among the prized possessions of the Austrian National Library. The richly illuminated codex, of which this manuscript is a painstaking exact copy, was prepared on behalf of Phillip the Good, (also known as Phillip III, Duke of Burgundy) circa 1450. Recent scholarship has attributed the original to the Master of Girart de Rouissillon, naming the codex as among his finest works. Phillip the Good is best remembered for his extravagant court, his taste for luxury and his patronage of the arts. During his reign, some six hundred illuminated manuscripts were commissioned, including the Croniques de Jherusalem. The original manuscript came into possession of Emperor Mathias and was passed down by inheritance to Emperor Max I, being notable enough to be mentioned in the inventory of the Treasury at that time. In the mid-18th century, the codex passed to the Imperial Library, later to be renamed the National Library. In 1922, artist, antiquary and publisher Annete von Eckardt was given permission to copy the famed manuscript, which to that time had not been reproduced. Von Eckardt, perhaps best known for her relationship with Franz Marc, was an extraordinary artist and colourist, as evidenced by this manuscript. In a note laid in, Eckardt describes the two year process by which she accomplished the work: "The original miniatures are shown very rarely and only by exceptional permission. Thanks to the kindness of the Director Herr Smital for two long years of tedious work it was possible to copy leaf by leaf with the aid of a magnifying glass. Again and again every detail of the work was compared with the original, while the precious leaves were kept under a protecting sheet of glass. Great difficulties were produced by the poor light in the library, which being situated in the old in period castle is entirely equipped in the style of the middle ages. Of course to execute the minute work of the miniatures no ordinary water-colours could be used: the lapis lazuli blue, scarlet red, turquois green had to be prepared with the aid of the yellow of eggs, honey, etc. etc. All the gold consists of pure gold and is finished by polishing with an agate style and will never tarnish. Such difficult and tedious copying of precious and antique masterpieces can hardly be expected, if at all, more than once. Therefore, this exquisite work of art, the Chronology of the Crusades, will ever be increasing in value as time goes on." An extraordinary work of art. Cf. Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, Cod. 2533.
