Finely bound by Riviere and Son in tan calf, tan and brown morocco labels, elaborate decoration to spines gilt in compartments separated by raised bands, triple rule to boards gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Title pages printed in blue and black. Pages nice and clean, some minor marks to boards, couple of headcaps lightly chipped, two volumes with damp staining to boards with minimal discolouration and some expert restoration to board edges. An excellent set. The Standard Edition. Number 63 of 750 sets signed by the publishers. Volume 13 contains the first edition of the novella Billy Budd, which was discovered in manuscript among Melville's papers in 1919 by Raymond M. Weaver, the author's first biographer. Extremely scarce in such a handsome contemporary binding.

        Accurate Portraits of Female Beauties

      Shanghai: World Book Co, 1922. Modernized version of an ancient Chinese classic being the second volume of "One Hundred Beauties" with 50 full-page portraits and pictorial titlepage and colophon, text in Chinese, original green printed front wrapper and tan back wrapper, hand-sewn. Wrappers a bit soild and worn at edges as are some pages but generally sound, housed in custom-made black cloth over boards clamshell box. Issued during the Republic period when Shanghai was know as the Paris of the East and the Chinese cinema flourished as a new art form - that effect seen in the images in this book.

      The First UK Printing published by Heinemann in 1922. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original hardcover binding with paper covered boards. The fragile spine has been professionally repaired and rebacked and part of the original titling remains. Scraping and exposure of the paperboard to the bottom corners, with lesser exposure to the top corners or boards. Light soiling, scuffing and wear to the boards. Previous owner's clean neat bookplate to the verso of the front end paper. Light spotting to the pages throughout. Illustrated by William Nicholson with colour pictorial endpapers plus 7 richly coloured full page lithographs (several are double-page spreads). The illustrations are clean with just some light spotting to the edges in places. No dustjacket. A fragile production and this copy is much better preserved than most. This classic children's title chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit and his desire to become real, through the love of his owner. Increasingly scarce and the nicest copy we have handled to date.

      8vo., sometime bound by Root in full dark blue crushed morocco, ruled in gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, rich gilt turn-ins over watered silk endpapers. With 16 illustrations, extra illustrated with 8 colour plates and 44 black and white plates (predominantly portraits). A little rubbing to raised bands on spine otherwise a very good copy. First edition. A handsomely bound extra-illustrated copy including a hand coloured frontispiece of Pollard's Four in Hand at the Roebuck (rather incongruously as The Roebuck was in Turnham Green). With a history of the Club Almack's. Almack's Assembly Rooms was a social club in London from 1765 to 1871 and one of the first to admit both men and women. It was one of a limited number of upper class mixed-sex public social venues in the British capital in an era when the most important venues for the hectic social season were the grand houses of the aristocracy. From 1871 it was renamed "Willis's Rooms" The Assembly Rooms first opened in purposeful rivalry to Mrs. Cornelys' entertainments at Carlisle House; her masquerade balls were becoming notorious. At first it was described as a "female Brook's"--a gambling club to which women were admitted, as well as men. Male members proposed and elected the female members, and women proposed and elected the male members. At this time, like Almack's other establishments, it was meant to make money as what would now be called a casino. It was, like a male club, open any night, and gambling was all that went on, besides a little supper served by Mr. and Mrs. Almack, the latter of whom poured tea while wearing a fashionable sack gown. In 1770, Horace Walpole wrote of "The Female Coterie", "There is a new Institution that begins to make, and if it proceeds will make, considerable noise. It is a club of both sexes to be erected at Almack's, on the model of that of the men at White's. Mrs Fitzroy, Lady Pembroke, Mrs Meynell, Lady Molyneux, Miss Pelham and Miss Lloyd are the foundresses. I am ashamed to say I am of so young and fashionable society; but as they are people I live with, I choose to be idle rather than morose. I can go to a young supper without forgetting how much sand is run out of the hour-glass. This first phase of Almack's suffered from competition from The Pantheon or "Winter Ranelagh Gardens" from 1772 until it burned down twenty years later Play seems to have fallen off, as Almack's entered its second phase some time after 1800.

Mandelshtam's second book just three which he published during his lifetime. It was a not inconsiderable success, a reprint (re-titled "Second Book" was issued within a year of the initial publication.[13]

An "exceptionally full treatment to what my be rightly called the backbone of the [English] language," designed for use with Sisam's Fourteenth Century Verse and Prose.         Falbalas & Fanfreluches: almanach des modes, présentes, passées et futures pour 1922

      Paris: Meynial, 1922. Barbier, George. Small quarto. 12pp., + (12)ff. colored plates, loose as issued. One of 600 copies. Art Deco legend George Barbier contributed fashion plates to several albums and almanacs starting in 1912 before finally starting his own publication in 1922 titled Falbalas et Fanfreluches. Each annual issue included an almanac for the year, a guest essay, and twelve bright pochoir plates. Not all of the plates are traditional fashion plates; Barbier chose to include many fantastical renderings of period and foreign costumes and folk dress, presented in his usual elegant style. This is the first issue of the publication, which ran until 1926. The issue is by Comtesse Mathieu de Noailles and includes a color-illustrated title page and an additional black & white headpiece. Near fine, with a few pages still unopened. In chemise, illustrated with a young woman fending off Cupid's arrows, and original glassine. (Colas 1026).

        The Worst Journey in the World, the copy of the author's friend and reviewer with a small archive, including a holograph letter from Cherry-Garrard, a 1909 original photograph of Cherry-Garrard, and newspaper clippings, including the original Morning Post review, a 1922 letter to the editor from Cherry-Garrard, and the author's 1959 obituary

      London: Constable and Company Limited, 1922. First edition. This first edition of “one of the undisputed classics of exploration literature” belonged to the authorÂ’s friend and reviewer, Arturi D. Ingram, whose bookplate is affixed to each front pastedown. A small, accompanying archive includes a holograph 3 February 1923 letter on Cherry-GarrardÂ’s Lamar Park stationery to Ingram pasted onto the Volume II half-title verso (“My autograph, for what itÂ’s worth…”), an original 1909 photo of Cherry-Garrard (pasted below the authorÂ’s Volume I note following the title page) with IngramÂ’s notes on the photo laid in (dated “Jan 1931”), and several newspaper clippings, including IngramÂ’s 1922 Morning Post review, a 1922 letter to the Morning Post Editor, and Cherry-GarrardÂ’s 1959 obituary. Condition is very good given the editionÂ’s inherent fragility. The publisherÂ’s original bindings of tan linen over blue-gray paper-covered boards remain square and firmly attached, with minor wear to extremities and some spotting and soiling to the boards. The original paper spine labels are intact and the publisher-supplied replacement labels remain tipped onto the front free endpapers. The blue-gray endpapers are intact. All illustrations and maps are present. Spotting, heaviest to the untrimmed page edges, is substantially confined to blank inner margins within. At 24, Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886-1959) was the youngest member of Robert Falcon ScottÂ’s fatal Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) which, among other objectives, sought to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Born to wealth, the young Cherry “sought meaning and direction” and “He found both when he met the inspirational scientist, Bill Wilson, through whom he obtained a place on Scott's expedition.” Acutely myopic and bespectacled and with no previous exploration experience, Cherry was an unlikely Expedition choice. His “pluck, charm and unflagging enthusiasm” led crewmates to bestow the nickname “Cheery.” During the winter of 1911, Cherry, along with Wilson and Lieutenant Henry Bowers made a trip to Cape Crozier to collect Emperor penguin eggs for what became the Natural History Museum in London. “Cherry, Wilson and Birdie Bowers hauled 750 pounds of equipment 67 miles each way through the dark Antarctic winter to obtain emperor penguin embryos, never before seen by anyone except the penguins themselves. They nearly died in temperatures dropping to minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes marching as little as a mile and a half in a day...” CherryÂ’s clothing froze. His teeth shattered. “It was as if three men in mere terrestrial garb had been tossed into howling outer space.” But they survived, forming an intense bond. When they parted, Cherry did not know that when he next time saw them, they would be lying dead at their last camp with Scott, whom they accompanied on the final push to the South Pole. Cherry set out towards Scott with food supplies, accompanied only by a dog team and its Russian boy driver, but, through no fault of CherryÂ’s, the effort failed. A 1959 obituary said, “Cherry-Garrard could never forget the expedition and subconsciously, against all reason, felt that he should have gone on alone to try to meet his friends, which would only have added two more deaths to the tragedy.” CherryÂ’s health and spirit were permanently impaired, but this did not prevent his writing this remarkable account of his experience – a story that is gripping and humane and even tinged with humor: “Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised.” In writing he had the encouragement and support of his neighbors, George Bernard Shaw and his wife, and it was reportedly Shaw who chose the title. “… he did not set out to write another hagiographic tribute. He wrote in order to tell a true storyÂ… he correctly understood that ultimately it was ''the spirit of the men, 'the response of the spirit,' which is interesting rather than what they did or failed to do.''

Hi, This lot is a 1922 Original Hardback Wisden in OK Condition, 1922s do not come in very good very often and there are nicer condition 1922s out there but this one is special as it is a presentation Wisden, it is signed by the Editor Sydney H Pardon to Caine (future editor) on the title page. So condition, first off the gilt is bright to front and spine , the boards however are dark and marked and there is a lot of wear between the spine cloth and the front/back boards. Inside the hinges are strong but some yellow coming away to the front hinge. A bit grubby inside but not too bad. Great Photoplate. Sticker to first page.

At this time, like Almack's other establishments, it was meant to make money as what would now be called a casino. It was, like a male club, open any night, and gambling was all that went on, besides a little supper served by Mr. and Mrs. Almack, the latter of whom poured tea while wearing a fashionable sack gown. In 1770, Horace Walpole wrote of "The Female Coterie", "There is a new Institution that begins to make, and if it proceeds will make, considerable noise. It is a club of both sexes to be erected at Almack's, on the model of that of the men at White's. Mrs Fitzroy, Lady Pembroke, Mrs Meynell, Lady Molyneux, Miss Pelham and Miss Lloyd are the foundresses. I am ashamed to say I am of so young and fashionable society; but as they are people I live with, I choose to be idle rather than morose. I can go to a young supper without forgetting how much sand is run out of the hour-glass. This first phase of Almack's suffered from competition from The Pantheon or "Winter Ranelagh Gardens" from 1772 until it burned down twenty years later Play seems to have fallen off, as Almack's entered its second phase some time after 1800. Title translates to "Book of Songs : For Kindergartens and National Schools. " Abraham Zevi Idelsohn was a prominent Jewish musicologist, composer, and cantor. He is perhaps best known for his lyrical contribution to the song Hava Nagila and for his 10 volume work "Thesaurus of Hebrew Oriental Melodies. " (Wikipedia, 2016) In the work for sale here, Idelsohn analyzes various musical modes and intonations that are present in the wide spectrum of Jewish music. Thus, the reader gains a greater understanding of how songs are adapted to the various Jewish cultures of the Diaspora. "‘Hava Nagila’ (Havah Nagilah, ‘Let us rejoice’) is an Israeli folk song traditionally sung at Jewish celebrations. It is perhaps the first modern Israeli folk song in the Hebrew language that has become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and bar/bat mitzvah celebrations . Abraham Zevi Idelsohn (1882–1938) , a professor at Hebrew University, began cataloging all known Jewish music and teaching classes in musical composition; one of his students was a promising cantorial student, Moshe Nathanson, who (with the rest of his class) was presented by the professor with a 19th-century, slow, melodious, chant (niggun or nigun) and assigned to add rhythm and words to fashion a modern Hebrew song. There are competing claims regarding Hava Nagila's composer, with both Idelsohn and Nathanson being suggested. The niggun he presented has been attributed to the Sadigurer Chasidim, who lived in what is now Ukraine, which uses the Phrygian dominant scale common in music of Transylvania. The commonly used text was probably refined by Idelsohn. In 1918, the song was one of the first songs designed to unite the early Yishuv [Jewish enterprise] that arose after the British victory in Palestine during World War I and the Balfour Declaration, declaring a national Jewish homeland in the lands newly liberated from Turkey by the Allies and entrusted to Britain under the Treaty of Versailles. Although Psalm 118 (verse 24) of the Hebrew Bible may have been a source for the text of ‘Hava Nagila’, the expression of the song and its accompanying hora (‘circle’) dance was entirely secular in its outlook" (Wikipedia, 2016) . Single printed sheet, measuring 5-1/2 by 5 inches. $13,500.Original Shakespeare and Company printer's advertisement for the works of James Joyce, annotated at length on the verso by Sylvia Beach listing the publication and availability of the first three parts of Finnegans Wake while still under the working title Works in Progress.After working seven years on Ulysses, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. ""Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure"" (de Grazia, 27). From that point forward, Beach represented Joyce and his work in nearly every capacity, "" facing down outraged critics, legal rulings and printers who refused to take on Joyce's work"" (British Library). This printer's advertisement reflects Beach's lifelong commitment to promoting Joyce's work, including through the writing of Finnegans Wake, seen here when it was still Work in Progress. The lengthy notations cover the verso and are entirely in Beach's hand: ""1st fragment of 'Work in Progress' published in New York by Crosby Gage 1928 Anna Livia Plurabelle (from part I) 650 copies all signed. 2nd fragment Tales Told of Shem & Shaun (from part II) The Black Sun Press, Paris 1929. 3rd fragment Babou & Kahane, Paris 1930 Haveth Childers Everywhere from part III. Interestingly, Finnegans Wake led to the undoing of Beach and her bookshop. Shakespeare and Company ""closed in December 1941, when a Nazi officer threatened to confiscate the stock of the bookshop if Sylvia did not sell him her only copy of the novel"" (Fitch, 393). Beach had endured a downturn in business, hiding her stock from the Nazis, the deaths of her husband and James Joyce. Ultimately, she could not endure the perversion of Joyce's legacy. This printer's advertisement represents the twilight years of Joyce's brilliant career, before he succumbed to illness and disability, when the possibilities of Finnegans Wake, still unfinished, seemed limitless and Sylvia Beach had no reason to believe her reign as the most powerful literary figure in Paris would ever end. From 1914-16 she was linked romantically with Rainer Maria Rilke. In 1928, she returned to Paris and was part of the Montparnasse art society, where she befriended Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and Robert Delaunay. Lasard's love for Paris and the world of variety shows is highlighted in the 12 lithographs of this exquisite portfolio. In 1925 Lasard was featured in an acclaimed exhibition in the Berlin branch of the noted Galerie Alfred Flechtheim, and the prints in this portfolio were issued in a very limited number to accompany that exhibit. In May, 1940, she and her daughter were interned by the Nazis at the Gurs concentration camp in southwestern France, but were later released. Some wear to flaps of original portfolio. Lithographs clean and fine, with bold signatures. A lovely copy in extremely good condition, rare and most desirable complete.

Inscribed by the artist on the flyleaf: 'For Michel, affectly Albert, Xmas 1922' - the recipient is obscure, but Michel Salaman is the outstanding candidate. The quality of the printing met with the artist's approval, and the production marked the beginning of a golden decade for the Press. A delightful little gift book, of utmost scarcity - with no other copies currently for sale, and no record on COPAC; it functioned as an advertisement (indeed it begins with a statement headed thus) for the Press's new phase under the guidance of Harold Curwen and Oliver Simon. None of its recipients could fail to be impressed by the work on show - and where in the main the blank format allows the design and printing quality to speak for itself, a small outbreak of self-promotion recurs at the close with a description of the types and decoration held at the Press and a page for telephone numbers headed by the sole printed entry of the Press's own contact details. The small flyer laid in at the front conveys the news of their occupancy of a room in St. Stephen's House, Westminster - where Oliver Simon will be found, amongst an 'ever-changing Exhibition of modern English and Foreign books'.

Mixed engraving methods printed on mounted India tissue, plate impression measures 13-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches; window matted, entire piece measures 23 by 20 inches. $1500.Vivid Leipzig restrike of “Vignette X” from Karl Bodmer’s magnificent picture atlas produced for Maximilian Wied-Neuwied’s Travels in the Interior of North America (1839-43).Maximilian’s monumental work was originally published in German (1839-41); a French translation followed in 1840-43 and an English translation in 1843. A picture-atlas of eighty-one aquatint plates (48 folios and 33 “vignettes”) after paintings by Karl Bodmer was issued in Paris, and accompanied all three of these editions. The images provide an authentic glimpse into 19th-century America by one of the most eminent European artists. Unlike some other painters of the American West, Bodmer tried not to romanticize his subjects, but show them as they really were. “Bodmer’s watercolors are perhaps the most accurate works of art ever made of American Indians during the nineteenth century. His attention in detail to beadwork, personal symbols, clothing, accoutrements, and facial expression make these portraits precious documents of a lost world” (Robert Moore). This superb hand-colored group portrait of Saki and Fox leaders was apparently sketched by Bodmer on March 27, 1833 in St. Louis, where the Indians had come to negotiate the release of Black Hawk, a Saki chief, who had been captured the previous summer following a series of skirmishes with the U.S. Army. Maximilian described them as “stout, well formed men, many of them tall, broad shouldered, muscular and brawny. The features of the men are expressive, and strongly marked: the cheek bones prominent, the lower jaw broad and angular, and the dark brown eyes animated and fiery.” The engraving is vignette number X, restruck on India paper from the original copperplate enhanced by Johann Hürlimann and issued as the “Leipzig edition” of 1922, with the requisite three separate imprint statements and captions in German, French and English. The original plate had been engraved by Charles Vogel. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are “more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition” (David C. Hunt).
