      Eugene Bejot. Near Fine. 1921. Artwork. French artist, 1867 - 1931, Béjot was taught the art of etching by Henri Ibels and was most influenced by the master etchers of his time, Buhot and Bracquemond. He was awarded many honors and during his stay in England became the secretary of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. In Paris he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1912. He is most famous for his series of etchings Arrondissements de Paris. All important international museum print collections include his works . Impression #26 of an edition of thirty-six, dated and signed in the stone, and signed, numbered and dated in pencil in the lower margin. George Kenneth Hartwell (1891-1949) was born in Fitchberg, Mass, and studied at the Art Students' League in New York City under Kenneth Hayes Miller, Edward Hopper and George Bellows. His work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1923), the Society of Independent Artists (1923), the Library of Congress (1944-46), the Laguna Beach Art Association (1945 and 1946) and the Carnegie Institute (1945), Hartwell worked as an illustrator for CENTURY, SCRIBNER'S and THEATRE ARTS. He is particularly known for his Depression-era depictions of the worlds of carnivals, sideshows and burlesque houses, and urban dwellers of which this image is a fine example.

        1921 - 1962 Collection of Correspondence of El Paso Texas Educator & Author Dr. Lucinda De Leftwich Templin, Including Material Concerning Her War Museum and the Establishment of Radford School for Girls

      El Paso Texas: Not Published, 1921. The collection includes over 150 dated and signed letters written to (and a few items from) Dr. Lucinda DeLeftwich Templin (1888-1969) author, historian & collector, "...one of El Paso's best-loved and most distinguished educators - in 1916 she took her undergraduate and Master's at U. of Missouri and became Dean of Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO., did doctoral work at Harvard and Columbia and took over as principal at the Radford School in 1927 (at the time, called El Paso School for Girls); Dr. Templin interested Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Radford of Webster Grove, Mo., in the school and the Radfords paid off the mortgage, provided an endowment fund that insured the institution's stability and the name of the school was changed in honor of these benefactors. During Dr. Templin's administration, Radford School grew to a nationally accredited school for girls in the Southwest and when she retired in 1967, the 22-acre campus had more than $1,000,000 in physical improvements and was debt-free. Dr. Templin had also completed plans for construction of a $400,000 library and museum on property owned by the school; she was a member of the nation's leading educational organizations and honorary societies, named consistently to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education; author of numerous publications, most of which were concerned with the field of education. (The above material from her obituary); This wide-ranging, diverse collection has three intertwining themes - letters concerning Dr. Templin's ongoing interest in education and educational materials for her school, letters which relate to the business and academic part of Radford and letters of reference for applicants and correspondence which relates to the creation of her War Museum, where she collected military autographs, uniforms, photographs, paraphernalia, weapons from around the world. Ross, Major Gen. U.S. Army regarding the Templin War Museum project; a clipped signature of Alvan Tufts Fuller (1878 -1958) and one of John Kieran; and a unidentified sepia-tone matte-finish photograph circa 1920s that may be Dr. Templin or perhaps a friend; a few of the items with the original mailing envelopes; many letters with old adhesive residue from being mounted at some time, some with old tape marks in the corners, some of the items trimmed as if to accommodate in a smaller frame or album (not here); old fold lines, ageing; some with corner-attrition due to being removed; in overall good to very good condition and an interesting group of material encompassing the rich educational, business and personal life of this well-known Texas woman educator, whose contacts spanned the United States and the world. . The complete collection of manuscripts and galley proofs of The Second Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum along with a near fine copy of the book, #2 of 251 copies. All but one of the 129 manuscripts are present with various corrections and additions including author Signatures on nearly half, including four Signatures not in the book, plus a manuscript originally included but removed before publication. One or more versions of the printer's galleys for 116 of the 129 contributions with corrections and printer's notes. Also included is a contemporary oversized quarter leather clamshell box with gilt spine label that housed the manuscripts and galleys. First edition. Folio. Morocco grained cloth gilt, beveled edges, marbled endpapers, and untrimmed pages. Near fine with light wear to the extremities, joints lightly rubbed and two tiny bookseller stickers on the rear endpapers ("Philotheos K. Ferney Fine and Rare Books"). The Authors Club of New York was organized in 1882 as a club for noted persons and authors, such as Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Clemens, Frank Stockton, and John Hay. The First Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum was published in 1891 to raise money for a permanent home for the social club. This second volume was conceived to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first volume but publication was delayed due to World War I. When finally published in 1921, it contained 129 stories, poems, and essays in a limited edition of 251 copies and was Signed by each author at his contribution. As noted in the table of content and errata slip, not all of the authors were able to sign this volume: eight died before the presses had finished so facsimiles were used for Joseph Alexander Altsheler, Julius Chambers, William Henry McElroy, Charles Augustus Stoddard, Stephen Henry Thayer, Calvin Thomas, James Terry White, and William Young; two had gone blind, James Thompson Bixby and Richard Rodgers Bowker, and could no longer sign their name consistently; one contributor was off traveling, Frank Crane; and one was ill, William Ordway Partridge. This copy of The Second Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum is exceptional because it is accompanied by all but one of the manuscripts from the contributing authors, along with the majority of the galley proofs. The Henry van Dyke manuscript is missing but included is Francis Whiting Halsey's manuscript, "Mulberry and a Book," which is included in the manuscript of the table of contents but was not included in the published book, likely due to the author's death in late 1919. The typed and autographed manuscripts range from small octavo to folio and are in various conditions, averaging very good or better. Many of them have some light to moderate tanning, tears or chipping, most likely due to years of storage in a contemporary clamshell box, also included. Nearly all the manuscripts (including the title page, table of contents and preface) contain minor to major corrections and additions, as well as notes to the printer and are held together with paperclips or pins with some minor oxidation. Many of the manuscripts are also Signed by their contributors, most notably Bixby, Bowker, White, and Young, who did not ultimately sign the published book. In addition to these manuscripts, the galley proofs of all but 13 of the contributions are included as well. They vary greatly in size, with many cut down from long galleys, probably for easier editing and storage. Nearly all are stamped, "The Plimpton Press, Duplicate Proofs," with some scattered chips and tears, along with editing marks and notes for the printer, about near fine. A one of a kind collection. The Kaluza paper: pp. 966-972. Fine and clean.. First edition. Theodor Kaluza (1885-1954) set forth his idea of unifying gravitation and electromagnetism within five-dimensional space-time in a paper from the beginning of 1919. It was presented by Albert Einstein to the Berlin Academy of Science and published in its Sitzungsberichte in 1921 under the title "Zum Unitätsproblem der Physik." Having received the manuscript from the author in April 1919, Einstein was so impressed with the idea of unifying the basic forces in a five-dimensional space that he used it himself up to the mid-1940s in eight of his own papers. Kaluza's idea of unifying gravitation and electromagnetism goes back to David Hilbert's unification program and to the pioneering work of two of his pupils: Hilbert sought unification within a four-dimensional space by having electromagnetism come from gravitation in 1915. His pupil Gunnar Nordström explored unification within a five-dimensional unwarped (Minkowskian) space in the foregoing year. The unification attempt by Hermann Weyl in 1918, finally, was to apply a gauge transformation within a four-dimensional space with a generalized non-Riemannian metric. Although Nordström was the first to introduce a five-dimensional space, it was Kaluza's theory from 1919 that proposed a realistic unification of the two interactions. Nordström's theory predated the general theory of relativity (1915) so the gravitation was derived from electromagnetism within a space described by a Minkowskian flat metric. As a consequence, it could not explain phenomena like light deflection and was therefore condemned as a prerelativistic theory. First edition, off-print, of Pauli's excellent monograph, which was published as the article on relativity theory in the highly estimated "Encyclopädie der Mathematischen Wissenschaften".Wolfgang Pauli jr. (1900-1958) already in high school acquainted himself with Einstein's theory of relativity, when this was entirely new, and after having finished high school, he decided to study theoretical physics under Arnold Somerfeld, one of the leading scholars in the field at the time, in Munich. During this period Felix Klein was publishing the "Encyclopädie der Mathematischen Wissenschaften", and he asked Somerfeld to write the article on relativity theory for this highly esteemed publication. However, being very impressed by the abilities of his barely 20 year old student, Pauli jr., he asked him to carry out the task, and so he did. "Pauli soon completed a monograph of about 250 pages, which critically presented the mathematical foundations of the theory as well as its physical significance. He took thorough account of the already very considerable literature on the subject but at the same time clearly put forth his own interpretation. Despite the necessary brevity of discussion, he monograph is a superior introduction to the special and general theories of relativity; it is in addition a first-rate historical document of science, since, together with H. Weyl's "Raum, Zeit, Materie" it is the first comprehensive presentation of the mathematical and physical ideas of Einstein, who himself never wrote a large work about his theory.Somerfeld was elated by his performance and wrote to Einstein that Pauli's article was "simply masterful" - and so it has remained to the present day. (PMM 261; Horblit 22; Dibner 44; Evans 54; Sparrow 47).<br/><br/> The rarity of complete sets of this work is well known. In 1921 Sotheran's described a complete set as being 'excessively scarce', and during the past thirty years only a handful of copies have appeared on the market, all inferior to ours: Richard Green 2008 (a made-up set lacking the half-titles); Friedman 2001 (modern bindings); the Freilich-Norman copy 2001/1998 (non-uniform cloth-backed boards); Honeyman 1979 (rebacked and made-up). The copy which comes closest in condition to ours is the Freilich-Norman copy (Sotheby's 2001, $43,875). However, that copy was bound in three different types of boards (plain grey, blue, and marbled), with the cloth laid over the boards, and the spine labels were hand-lettered. All three parts of our copy are bound in uniform cloth-backed plain grey boards, with the cloth laid under the paper of the boards, and have the original printed spine labels intact.<br/><br/> "A milestone work in the history of chemistry, in which Dalton announced his revolutionary atomic theory and his laws of definite and multiple proportions. These fundamental laws greatly assisted the establishment of the composition and formulae of numerous inorganic and organic compounds then known and laid one of the firmest foundations ever for the advance of chemistry in the nineteenth century An 'epoch-making work' (Bolton. The book is very rare when complete with the three parts and the required half title [as in the offered copy] to volume II, part 1. These atoms remained unchanged during chemical processes, and their particular weight determined their identity. His 'New System' presented the first chemical atomic theory giving significance to the relative weights of the ultimate particles of all known compounds. It also provided a quantitative explanation of the phenomena of chemical reaction. Virginia Woolf (1882- 1941), English novelist, essayist and critic, married the political theorist Leonard Woolf in 1912, with whom she established the Hogarth Press. MONDAY OR TUESDAY was the first Hogarth Press title to be included in the Annals of English Literature, 1475-1950. It was Woolf's "break out" book and it was noted that with this collection of short stories, Mrs. Woolf "emerged definitely with the liveliest imagination and most delicate style of her time." Vanessa Bell (1879-1961), elder sister of Virginia Woolf, was herself a talented artist. She designed a number of dust jackets for books published by her sister's press, as well as illustrating the books. In her art, she attempted to break the bonds of restrictive Victorian norms. She, and the other members of the Bloomsbury group, made significant efforts to introduce the French avant-garde to an English audience. Bell's art, often decorative, and especially in the period represented in this book owes much to Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. See an Image.

Rembrandt's Bible is the complete King James Bible with 240 illustrations and 20 original etchings after Rembrandt all protected with tissue guards. It is remarkable that though many Christian painters throughout the ages had been inspired by the Bible with its wealth of subjects and scenes, comparatively few had given us a complete cycle of Bible pictures comprising both the Old and New Testaments. One of these few artists was Rembrandt who, to judge from the multiplicity and variety of his biblical pictures and designs, must have been a close student of the Bible and imbued with an intense religious feeling. Indeed, he may be counted among the most prolific and ingenious of Bible illustrators, for he is credited with more than 200 paintings and etchings and over 500 rough sketches dealing with biblical subjects. Rubrics in red, capitals struck with red, headlines and chapter number in red and blue, one two-line chapter initial in blue with elaborate red and blue penwork extending the full length of the leaf in the inner margin, and the recto WITH A MAGNIFICENT HISTORIATED INITIAL "F" showing Judas Maccabeus and three others standing before God, Judas at the front of the group gesturing with a finger of one hand pointing at the other hand (see below), the scene set against a magenta and white tesselated background, the body of the initial in blue, pink, and white with burnished gold disks (the scenic part of the initial measuring approximately 42 mm. square, but with a wide descender several lines long), the letter terminating near the top of the middle margin with a leafy stalk surmounted by a pensive, scrawny bird.A tiny bit of wrinkling at one lower corner, otherwise REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED, ESPECIALLY BRIGHT, CLEAN, AND FRESH, WITH THE INITIAL IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This and the next item are two of the most beautiful Bible leaves we have ever offered for sale, and, not surprisingly, they come with distinguished provenance. The condition could not be any better, and the artistic accomplishment here is difficult to overpraise. The painter, who has obviously done his work with great care and confidence, has produced a scene characterized by sharply defined figures, impressive precision in the application of paint, and an intelligent design, all of which add up to an unusually high level of aesthetic achievement, especially for the time period. The iconography here is intriguing. The opening chapter of II Machabees contains a letter from Judas Maccabeus and leaders of the Jewish community in Jerusalem inviting the Jews of Egypt to join in celebrating a festival of thanksgiving (which became the holiday known today as Hanukkah), commemorating the liberation of Jerusalem from Syrian control and the reconsecration of the Temple after its desecration by Antiochus IV. In French and Italian illuminated Bibles of the 13th century, the conventional historiated initial for II Machabees depicts a messenger either receiving the letter in Jerusalem or delivering it in Egypt. Our miniature, by contrast, presents an unusual and perhaps original tableaux. Architectural elements at the right edge represent the newly rededicated Temple, as an image of God looks out benevolently from beneath the soffit of the building's cornice in the direction of four figures at the left side, apparently representing Judas Maccabeus and three of the others who jointly authored the letter with him. The arrangement of the hands of the Judas figure suggests a speaking gesture, though whether addressing thanksgiving to God or related somehow to the contents of the letter is unclear. Our leaf was once part of a spectacular Bible in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (his MS 2506) and later owned by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (his MS W.173). Phillipps bought the manuscript in the 1820s from Thomas Thorpe, who had purchased it in Spain. The Bordeaux origin is bolstered by the presence in the original volume of two 16th century inscriptions by monks from that city. Phillipps' heirs sold the Bible privately to Beatty in 1921, and it was sold in his sale at Sotheby's on 24 June 1969 to Alan Thomas, then bought, in turn, by Duschnes of New York and broken up. Phillipps (1792-1872) began collecting books with his schoolboy allowance, and once he succeeded to his father's large estate, he made collecting the chief business of his life, eventually becoming simply the greatest collector of manuscripts in history. His collection reached the staggering number of 60,000 manuscripts and approximately 1,000 incunabula, as well as many other printed books old and new. By the time he was 35, the American (later British and then Irish) engineer Beatty (1875-1968) had made a fortune in copper mining. But the years in the mines, where he started at the bottom, caused serious harm to his lungs, and he spent considerable time travelling to salubrious climates to repair his health. Cairo in particular became a second home and a location from which he began a serious career in collecting manuscripts, at first Islamic and then Western, accumulating in the end enough material to fill a catalogue of some 38 volumes. According to George Edwards' article in "Grolier 2000," Beatty "had the highest standards of quality and condition" as a collector, a claim that is validated by the present leaf.

      In-4° grande, leg. in tutta tela viola intessuta in oro con motivi disegnati da Vittorio Grassi, pp. (viii)xciij(xi). Impresso su fogli doppi di carta lavorata a pergamena, ed illustrato da Vittorio Grassi con 40 tavv. a colori a mezza pagina, da tempere di gusto preraffaellita. Il testo, curato da Michele Barbi, è quello rivisto per la Società Dantesca Italiana (1907). Il testo è impresso in rosso e nero con caratteri speciali tracciati appositamente da Enrico Brignoli. Edizione limitata di 1321 esemplari numerati (il nostro è il 1237), e firmati dagli artisti alla p. della giustificazione di tiratura. Vittorio GRASSI (Roma, 1878 - 1958), già affermato pittore, dal 1908 prese parte alle iniziative editoriali di E. De Fonseca, contribuendo con illustrazioni, disegni e progetti di abitazioni, decorazioni e mobili al successo di pubblicazioni come 'Novissima' e 'La Casa' che, in linea con le teorie moderniste europee, volevano diffondere tra il pubblico l'idea di un'arte coinvolta nel miglioramento di tutti gli aspetti della vita. Come Cambellotti e Prini, anche il Grassi progettò arredi per sé e per amici ed estimatori, ed alla X Biennale internazionale d'arte di Venezia (1912), confermando il suo interesse per le arti applicate, presentò alcuni vasi di ceramica realizzati su suo disegno dalla Società Richard Ginori. Nel 1913 ottenne la cattedra di ornato, incisione e scenografia all'Accademia di belle arti di Roma. Parallelamente sviluppava l'attività grafica con la collaborazione alle riviste 'L'Illustrazione italiana', 'Harmonia', 'Noi e il mondo', 'Il Primato artistico', 'Il Giornalino della domenica'. Negli anni Quaranta si registrano soprattutto lavori di scenografia; mentre per il decennio successivo si deve ricordare la partecipazione alla Mostra internazionale d'arte sacra tenutasi a Roma nel 1950. Il bellissimo frontespizio, i capilettera, ed i fregi in testata e finale di ogni pagina si devono a Nestore LEONI (L'Aquila, 1862 - Roma, 1947), celebre miniatore italiano, considerato un rinnovatore di questa antica arte. Suo è l'invio autografo firmato alla seconda p. bianca. Conservato nell'astuccio editoriale in cartone con tit. in oro. Il volume è in ottimo stato di conservazione, l'astuccio presenta qualche abrasione.
