Original Sketch of "Woman and Fawn"

      c. 1921. In the 1920s, E.E. Cummings was a regular contributor of both writing and artwork to The Dial magazine, which was the preeminent Modernist journal of its time, publishing such writers as Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Cocteau, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ford Madox Ford and such artists as Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky. Cummings was only 25 years old when his first pieces were accepted for The Dial and, notably, it was the only place where his poems and his artwork were published side by side on a regular basis. The January, 1921 issue had four drawings and a poem ("Puella Mea") by Cummings: this is Cummings' original sketch for one of those drawings, perhaps the most well-known of them, of a fawn on its hind legs, next to a nude woman, beneath a tree. This sketch was used as his pencil transfer, and as such is drawn on both sides of the paper. The final product, which was ink and graphite on paper, is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a bequest of Scofield Thayer, Cummings' friend and mentor and the editor of The Dial. This sketch is on 8-3/8" x 10-7/8" paper, with a 5" x 9" pencil border. Stained and chipped, mostly in the right margin; very good. With a Gotham Book Mart exhibit number (#245) in the upper left hand corner, where a chip is pending. A copy of The Dial, Vol. LXX, No 1 [NY: Dial, 1921], with the published drawing is included and is near fine with a small spine nick and the usual wear to the yapped edges. An iconic image in its very first incarnation. .

"Reading" with vignette on title in orange and green, two plates in the same colors, one facsimile of writing in text, device on final page, stylized illustration of a tree on front and rear endpapers; "Berneval" with woodcuts of Naples and Paris printed in blue on the front and rear endpapers, two-color title page woodcut, one plate and a facsimile of a Wilde letter, and printer's woodcut device; our special deluxe version WITH THREE ADDITIONAL WOODCUTS at the back of each volume, all the woodcuts as well as the cover design by Randolph Schwabe. Ransom, p. 211; Tomkinson, p. 17. "Berneval" spine just a bit darkened, otherwise FINE, UNWORN COPIES that have obviously been little used, as they open stiffly and are immaculate inside and out. Here, "After Berneval" is offered with "After Reading," its (earlier) companion volume, both of them in their deluxe form on Japanese vellum and including an extra suite of the illustrations. "Reading" comprises a set of letters, also written to Ross, by Wilde during the summer of 1897, after having just been released from two years' imprisonment in Reading Gaol. The preface to its sequel, "After Berneval," says that the earlier collection "was unprocurable almost as soon as it was published." The letters in these volumes tell the story of a tragic literary figure who fell from a precipitous height. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was born and raised in Ireland, studied classics at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Magdalen College, Oxford, and then settled in London. There he became famous for his unmatched wit and infamous for his personal eccentricities--long hair, décor at his lodgings that included peacock feathers and blue china, and, ultimately, sexual behavior that was deemed both intolerable and criminal. During the first half of the 1890s, he was enjoying remarkable social prominence and literary success with the staging of "Lady Windermere's Fan" (1892), "A Woman of No Importance" (1893), "An Ideal Husband" (1894), and the incomparable "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1895). But two months after the staging of this last play, he brought a defamation suit against the Marquess of Queensbury, the father of his intimate friend, Lord Alfred Douglas. The suit backfired: in the course of the litigation, Wilde was investigated by police, and his homosexuality was exposed, leaving his reputation destroyed. He was sentenced in May of 1895 to two years of hard labor, spending part of his time behind bars at Reading Prison, where he produced his powerful poem, "De Profundis." After release, he moved to the Continent and died three years later in Paris of meningitis. As Day says, "Among English men of letters only Byron and Shaw have surpassed Wilde in the craft of conscious posing and self-publicizing," a fact that has made succeeding generations suspicious of the reality behind the legend that the author helped to establish. But after a period when he was treated as a kind of martyr because of his suffering at the hands of squeamish Victorianism, "it is at last possible to evaluate Wilde as the capable literary artist he acutally was.

Two men camping in Ireland find a mysterious ruin and an old diary which tells of inhuman creatures from the bowels of the earth, a vision of the end of the solar system, and the unbelievable passage of thousands of years in an instant of subjective time!Hodgson, author, whose second novel, The House on the Borderland (1908), uses an account of a house ‘haunted’ by swinish invaders from another dimension as a bracketing device for a series of visions, which include a remarkable account of the cosmos revealed by contemporary astronomy and the future evolution of the solar system. Über eine naheliegende Ergänzung des Fundamentes der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, Berlin 1921, 8vo., 26.5 x 18.5 cms, Akad. Wiss. Berl., 1921, Berichte 51-53, (pp.261-264). Original printed wrappers. NEAR MINT CONDITION. A fine fresh example (small pencil mark to upper wrapper) of THIS RARE PAPER!! - ."Although Einstein could not accept Weyl's theory as a physical theory, he cherished "its courageous mathematical construction" and thought intensively about its conceptual foundation. This becomes clear from his paper "On a complement at hand of the bases of general relativity" of 1921. In it, he raised the question whether it would be possible to generate a geometry just from the conformal invariance of Equation without use of the conception "distance", i.e., without using rulers and clocks. He then embarked on conformal invariants and tensors of gauge-weight 0, and gave the one formed from the square of Weyl's conformal curvature tensor" Hubert, F.M. Goenner, On the History of Unified Field Theories. Reference: Weil N. 116; Schlipp-Shields No.145.. First Edition.

The Second Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum [with] A Collection of Manuscripts and Galley Proofs of The Second Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum

New York: The Author's Club. 1921. First. The complete collection of manuscripts and galley proofs of The Second Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum along with a near fine copy of the book, #2 of 251 copies. All but one of the 129 manuscripts are present with various corrections and additions including author Signatures on nearly half, including four Signatures not in the book, plus a manuscript originally included but removed before publication. One or more versions of the printer's galleys for 116 of the 129 contributions with corrections and printer's notes. Also included is a contemporary oversized quarter leather clamshell box with gilt spine label that housed the manuscripts and galleys. First edition. Folio. Morocco grained cloth gilt, beveled edges, marbled endpapers, and untrimmed pages. Near fine with light wear to the extremities, joints lightly rubbed and two tiny bookseller stickers on the rear endpapers ("Philotheos K. Ferney Fine and Rare Books"). The Authors Club of New York was organized in 1882 as a club for noted persons and authors, such as Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Clemens, Frank Stockton, and John Hay. The First Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum was published in 1891 to raise money for a permanent home for the social club. This second volume was conceived to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first volume but publication was delayed due to World War I. When finally published in 1921, it contained 129 stories, poems, and essays in a limited edition of 251 copies and was Signed by each author at his contribution. Contributors include: Irving Bacheller, George Washington Cable, George Wharton Edwards, John Erskine, Franklin Henry Giddings, George Bird Grinnell, Rossiter Johnson, John Uri Lloyd, Brander Matthews, George Barr McCutcheon, Albert Payson Terhune, Carl Van Doren, and Henry van Dyke. As noted in the table of content and errata slip, not all of the authors were able to sign this volume: eight died before the presses had finished so facsimiles were used for Joseph Alexander Altsheler, Julius Chambers, William Henry McElroy, Charles Augustus Stoddard, Stephen Henry Thayer, Calvin Thomas, James Terry White, and William Young; two had gone blind, James Thompson Bixby and Richard Rodgers Bowker, and could no longer sign their name consistently; one contributor was off traveling, Frank Crane; and one was ill, William Ordway Partridge. This copy of The Second Book of the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum is exceptional because it is accompanied by all but one of the manuscripts from the contributing authors, along with the majority of the galley proofs. The Henry van Dyke manuscript is missing but included is Francis Whiting Halsey's manuscript, "Mulberry and a Book," which is included in the manuscript of the table of contents but was not included in the published book, likely due to the author's death in late 1919. The typed and autographed manuscripts range from small octavo to folio and are in various conditions, averaging very good or better. Many of them have some light to moderate tanning, tears or chipping, most likely due to years of storage in a contemporary clamshell box, also included. Nearly all the manuscripts (including the title page, table of contents and preface) contain minor to major corrections and additions, as well as notes to the printer and are held together with paperclips or pins with some minor oxidation. Many of the manuscripts are also Signed by their contributors, most notably Bixby, Bowker, White, and Young, who did not ultimately sign the published book. In addition to these manuscripts, the galley proofs of all but 13 of the contributions are included as well. They vary greatly in size, with many cut down from long galleys, probably for easier editing and storage. Nearly all are stamped, "The Plimpton Press, Duplicate Proofs," with some scattered chips and tears, along with editing marks and notes for the printer, about near fine. A one of a kind collection. Details available upon request. .

1921 - 1962 Collection of Correspondence of El Paso Texas Educator & Author Dr. Lucinda De Leftwich Templin, Including Material Concerning Her War Museum and the Establishment of Radford School for Girls

El Paso Texas: Not Published, 1921. The collection includes over 150 dated and signed letters written to (and a few items from) Dr. Lucinda DeLeftwich Templin (1888-1969) author, historian & collector, "...one of El Paso's best-loved and most distinguished educators - in 1916 she took her undergraduate and Master's at U. of Missouri and became Dean of Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO., did doctoral work at Harvard and Columbia and took over as principal at the Radford School in 1927 (at the time, called El Paso School for Girls); Dr. Templin interested Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Radford of Webster Grove, Mo., in the school and the Radfords paid off the mortgage, provided an endowment fund that insured the institution's stability and the name of the school was changed in honor of these benefactors. During Dr. Templin's administration, Radford School grew to a nationally accredited school for girls in the Southwest and when she retired in 1967, the 22-acre campus had more than $1,000,000 in physical improvements and was debt-free. Dr. Templin had also completed plans for construction of a $400,000 library and museum on property owned by the school; she was a member of the nation's leading educational organizations and honorary societies, named consistently to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education; author of numerous publications, most of which were concerned with the field of education. (The above material from her obituary); This wide-ranging, diverse collection has three intertwining themes - letters concerning Dr. Templin's ongoing interest in education and educational materials for her school, letters which relate to the business and academic part of Radford and letters of reference for applicants and correspondence which relates to the creation of her War Museum, where she collected military autographs, uniforms, photographs, paraphernalia, weapons from around the world. A sampling of what is found here, chronological order: 1921 Dr. James G.       London, Macmillan and Co., 1921. Orig. full cloth. Spine gilt and with gilt lettering. Very light wear along edges. Top of spine very lightly frayed. Stamps to foot of titlepage. and to foot of last leaf. XI,466 pp. a. Publisher's advertisements 2 pp. A few faint pencil underlinings and notes on the first 10 leaves. Internally clean and fine.. First edition of this landmark work in which Keynes expressed probability theory in term of the modern-type symbolism."His Treatise on Probability was not published until 1921, owing to the interruption of the war, but had been almost completed by 1911. This was at once at work of great learning ideas. Its bibliography of the literature is one of the most comprehensive that has ever been made.In regard to the original ideas, his ambition was to provide a firm mathematical basis for the probability theory on lines comparable to those of the Principia Mathematica, in which Russell and Whitehead laid the foundations of symbolic deductive logic. Of Keynes's book Bertrand Russell afterward wrote, "The mathematical calculus is astonishingly powerful, considering the very restricted premises which form its foundation - the book as a whole is one which it is impossible to praise too highly (Mathematical Gazette July 1922)."(DSB)
