        Attaisnotie : stasti 1917-1920 (Acquitted : Stories Collection 1917-1920)

Kulturas Balls (Voice of Culture), Riga 1921 - Latvian language. Octavo 15 x 18 cm. Weight 150 gr. Wrappers, 158 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Book cover coated fine paper turned darker with time at edges, cover edges and spine ends show some fraying, light brown foxing spots on the cover, on the title and on first pages; internally text pages are clean. Great modernist cover design with archaic elements and 7 full-page modernist linocuts serving as chapter dividers by Niklavs Strunke. In present significant work author reveals a high concentration of thought, stylistic and figurative determination, entirely directed against bourgeois society. The text justifying revolutionary violence is a kind of document adopting with great artistic power the slogan "Viva Down" eliminating existing political order and with great fervor propagandizing social reforms. But writer's creation of this period in its content still remained somewhat spontaneous and anarchist expressing in the riot of personality who had been bullied and who in turn breaks the norms of bourgeois morality and law and rebells agains unequal world. Theme of organized struggle of the proletariat with the bourgeoisie will be raised in author's further works. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) is considered as central figure of the Latvian avant-garde, one of the most eminent personalities in Latvian modernist literature. Important organizer of the legal workers’ press and of revolutionary culture in bourgeois Latvia he edited cult leftist avant-garde journals Kreisa fronte (The Left Front) and Tribune (The Tribune). Laicens creativity imbued with the ideas of the revolutionary struggle and hatred of capitalism. Niklavs Strunke (1894 – 1966) versatile, prolific and outstanding artist, representative of radical phase in Latvian avant-garde. His art is known by a peculiar blend of Cubist and Constructivist influences with a distinct leaning towards the Italian trend of Pittura Metafisica (metaphysical art), unique in Latvian context.         A vintage gelatin silver photograph (254 x 318 mm) of the West Australian Airways De Havilland DH-66 Hercules biplane G-AUJO, taking off from what may be Adelaide's Parafield Airport

Norman Brearley founded Western Australian Airways in 1921 (called West Australian Airways from 1926). In 1929, WAA 'won a five-year contract for mail flights between Perth and Adelaide ... which it commenced that year using the much larger DH-66 Hercules aircraft. Reflecting the more leisurely pace of air operations in those days, the flight included two lunch stops and an overnight stay at Forrest, on the Nullarbor. Four Hercules were purchased' (raafawa.org.au). These four were each 'capable of carrying 14 passengers and considerable cargo, at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour' (ozaviation.com.au). G-AUJO, the first of them, was delivered on 1 June 1929. 'From January 1929, Australian aircraft began displaying the nationality and registration mark "VH". Aircraft previously registered G-A__ dropped the "G-A" prefix but retained the last three letters of their registration. Thus G-AUBA became VH-UBA. Because of the cost of re-painting aircraft, owners were given a period of twelve months in which to effect the change at the next major overhaul' (airwaysmuseum.com). Accordingly, this photograph dates from the second half of 1929. It is a wonderful image of the aircraft gathering height as it takes off, with a house in the near-background providing a sense of scale. The light over the hills in the distance completes the picture. Apart from a few trifling marks to the surface of mainly marginal areas, the photograph is in very good condition, now matted (using archival materials) ready for framing. The aircraft itself was very rare, as only eleven were ever built.

        A Treatise on Probability

London: Macmillan & Co., 1921. Book. Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾. A Treatise on Probability was published by John Maynard Keynes while at Cambridge University in 1921. The Treatise attacked the classical theory of probability and proposed a "logical-relationist" theory instead. In a 1922 review, Bertrand Russell called it "undoubtedly the most important work on probability that has appeared for a very long time," and a "book as a whole is one which it is impossible to praise too highly. The Treatise is fundamentally philosophical in nature despite extensive mathematical formulations. The Treatise presents an approach to probability that is subject to variation with evidence. Keynes's conception of probability is that it is a strictly logical relation between evidence and hypothesis. Keynes, in chapter 3 of the TP, used the example of taking an umbrella in case of rain to express the idea of uncertainty that he dealt with by the use of interval estimates in chapters 3, 15, 16, and 17 of the TP. Intervals that overlap are not greater than, less than or equal to each other. They can't be compared. Is our expectation of rain, when we start out for a walk, always more likely than not, or less likely than not, or as likely as not? I am prepared to argue that on some occasions none of these alternatives hold, and that it will be an arbitrary matter to decide for or against the umbrella. If the barometer is high, but the clouds are black, it is not always rational that one should prevail over the other in our minds, or even that we should balance them, though it will be rational to allow caprice to determine us and to waste no time on the debate. .

[T]he short story proves for Woolf an ideal space of experimentation, in which she questions both traditional views on human perception and conventional forms of writing, thus opening the way to her radical transformation of the novel . . . Various colored inks. 27.0 x 20.5 cm., heavy wove paper, tissue guards. Original hand-bound light brown stiff wrappers with etched label on upper cover. Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year 1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region. Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. Artist and historian, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects, including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall's scrapbooks, publications, and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.

        Bengal 1921-24

1921 - Oblong 4to. String bound cloth backed brown card boards, handwritten title label to the upper cover. 53 photographs of various sizes, between 20 x 15 cm for some of the scenic shots and 9 x 7 cm for some of the more personal snapshots, some captioned in pencil, mounted on 12 leaves and the rear inner cover. Mild darkening to the covers, very good overall. An interesting collection of amateur photographs illustrating both the country and British colonial life. The early part of the album features scenes in and around Kalchini as well as the Sankosh and Teesta Rivers in Bhutan and West Bengal, with several captioned "Kalimpong Rd". Two photos illustrate the 1922 floods in "Bogra Section", presumably of the nearby Brahmaputra. Some of the more personal snapshots follow, including three images of three British subjects ice skating in Simla in December, 1922. A succeeding group feature wonderful images of some of the same figures at Puri on the coast of Odisha, sporting wonderful conical-shaped rattan swimming hats. The album closes with more family photos, but also some very striking photos of the temple and the festive carriage of Jagannath at Puri plus two of Amingaon back up in Assam - one an atmospheric shot of the Brahmaputra taken from the riverbank.

        Photo Album]: Women in College

Massachusetts 1921 - Oblong small quarto. Measuring 7" x 10". Stapled black cloth over stiff paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 262 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 6" x 8", some with captions. Very good album with some chips and tears on the boards and leaves, with near fine photographs some with fading.A photo album compiled by a young woman attending college in Massachusetts beginning in 1919. From street signs it appears she went to Fitchburg Normal School, now Fitchburg State University, in North Central Massachusetts. Many of the photos show the women posed around campus with one photo of the four women huddled together smiling which reads, "fresh freshman," another shows them climbing a sign for Pearl Hill Road. They also visited friends, both men and women, at Harvard. Two photos show members of Fitchburg's girls' basketball team with a caption which reads, "Rah, Rah, Rah!" and another which reads "the victorious five 3 cheers!" Many of the photos show the women posing and being silly with such captions as: "naughty, naughty," "why Vera!," and "asleep at the switch." The women are seen in fashionable outfits, school uniforms, and hats throughout the album. One particularly intriguing image shows a woman, her hat in hand, passionately kissing a female schoolmate with a caption that read: "you mouthwatering Sappho." The women in this set of photos are flirty and smiling and posing on a bridge in a wooded area. After graduating the complier became a school teacher in 1921 and there are photos of her with her class of younger girls posed in a school yard and during a school play. Other photos include family snapshots and vacation photos featuring one of the women posed in her new car and another of a woman with a baseball bat.An compelling collection of photos focusing on a woman's time in college and her relationships with her classmates.
