EXPLORATIONS

London: The Egoist Press, 1921.. London: The Egoist Press, 1921.. Black cloth, stamped in blue. Usual faint foxing, minor rubbing at extremities, but a very good copy. First edition of the author's first book, one of ca. 500 copies printed. With McAlmon's early presentation inscription: "To Harrison from Bob." The recipient of the presentation has been suggested to be the American publisher, Harrison Smith, who issued an American edition of one of McAlmon's later publications, Lanham's SAILOR'S DON'T CARE, but no other internal evidence confirms that speculation. Nonetheless, this is not a book which, in our experience, turns up often with a presentation inscription.

Sechs Radierungen zu Hans Bethge's Satuila (original etchings by Georg Alexander Mathey)

Berlin: Morawe & Scheffelt, 1921 - NUMBER ONE OF ONLY TEN SETS OF THIS OUTSTANDING PORTFOLIO OF EXPRESSIONIST ETCHINGS, WITH MANY OF THE ETCHINGS PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER. In 1918 German novelist Hans Bethge wrote "Satuila oder vom Zauber der Suedsee" ("Satuila or the Enchantment of the South Sea"), the story of a young woman in Samoa. It is a sensual, escapist tale: the situation in Germany was quite terrible after the defeat in WWI, and there was great demand for escapism. This novel was a hit, and a deluxe edition, with 6 original etchings by German Expressionist artist Georg Alexander Mathey, was published in Berlin in 1921. The etchings are extremely beautiful, perfectly capturing the lush sensuality of the landscape and the unabashed sexuality of the characters (similar to the depictions of Gypsies by Otto Mueller, from about the same time). This edition of the novel was limited to 250 copies. Aside from the book edition, 10 sets of the etchings were printed, with large margins. In these 10 sets, each of the etchings is signed and numbered by the artist. I OFFER ONE OF THESE 10 SETS: SET NUMBER 1, with each of the etchings numbered 1/10 and signed in pencil by the artist. FOUR OF THE SIX ETCHINGS IN THIS SET ARE PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER, AND ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE AS SUCH. Additionally, there is a signed working proof of an early version of one of the etchings, also printed on old Japanese paper. This proof is probably unique, as the etching was never published. The set is as it was issued. Each etching (sheet size 8 1/2 x 7 inches--22 x 18 cm) is individually matted, and the original parchment-backed cloth portfolio case (16 1/2 x 13 inches--42 x 33 cm). There is a little light wear to the portfolio, but the etchings are fine and bright. An important and extremely rare item (and perhaps the only German Expressionist depictions of the South Pacific!) Der Waldläufer. Übertragen von Julius Hoffmann. Mit 66 Orig.-Steinzeichnungen von Max Slevogt.

Berlin, Propyläen (1921).. Gr.-4°. 1 Bl., 359, (7) S., 1 Bl., OGanzlederbd. Antiquariats-Titelbeschreibung. Ansonsten innen absolut tadellos. Rümann 20.a. Rodenberg 282. Schauer II.84.. * Eins von 300 (ges. 1500) numer.

[SCRAPBOOK OF A PROFESSIONAL MINIATURE PAINTER AND PORTRAITIST]

[Los Angeles, New York, etc.], [ca. 1921-50] . Near Fine. Pictorial cloth-bound album. Folio. 13 1/4” x 13 1/4”. Approximately 55 pages on about 30 leaves (plus a number remaining blank). A few elements apparently missing, some items loose and laid-in. Else generally fine. Fascinating and informative scrapbook of a noted miniature painter, Berta Carew. Includes letters and invitations from curators, notices of acceptance, programs from various shows/exhibits, award certificates, newspaper and catalog clippings relating to exhibitions (many reproducing her contributions), etc. Of special note are the more than forty commercial photographs (both mounted and loose) Ms. Carew had taken of her miniatures (in addition to the roughly equal number reproduced in the aforementioned clippings and programs). These professional photos (all black-and-white) provide a sharp, detailed close-up of each miniature, and in many cases the artist has additionally noted the title and buyer. Ms. Carew was something of a socialite judging by correspondence and addresses, but evidently took her career as a miniature painter quite seriously. She was a member of the British Academy of Arts and the American Society of Miniature Painters. She exhibited perhaps most prominently at the Met's 1950 show “Four Centuries of Miniature Painting” (program laid in). In effect, a personally assembled catalogue raisonné.

A History of the Great War

London, Edinburgh and New York- Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1921. London, Edinburgh and New York- Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1921 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce edition of The History of the Great War by John Buchan with numerousmaps including some that fold-out. Originally appearing in twenty-four volumes between February 1916 and July 1919, and was therefore written and published for the most part during the progress of the campaign. First edition thus. In four volumes complete. John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir PC GCMG GCVO CH (1875 - 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. Buchan then enlisted in the British Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps, where he wrote speeches and communiqus for Sir Douglas Haig. Recognised for his abilities, Buchan was appointed as the Director of Information in 1917, under the Lord Beaverbrook- a job that Buchan said was the toughest job I ever took on. Buchan also assisted Charles Masterman in publishing a monthly magazine that detailed the history of the war, the first edition appearing in February 1915. It was difficult, given his close connections to many of Britain's military leaders, for Buchan to be critical of the British Army's conduct during the conflict. With bookseller's labels to front pastedown to volume one and previous owner's ink inscriptions to front free endpaper to volumes two and four with his blindstamp to front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound but with a few pages detached to volume three. Bright with only the odd spot throughout. With some foxing to front andrearand oddstaining to some endpapers. With the odd closed tear, in particular to fold-out maps. Overall: GOOD.

        The Man-Killers

New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, [1921] New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, [1921]. Second printing. 8vo. [viii], 243 pp. Tan buckram. Slight spotting to fore- edge. Very good. Bookplate of Edward Borein, reproducing one of his drawings . Flyleaf inscribed: "To Ed Borein, / Merry Christmas - / Happy New Years - / Your joke is on page 14. / Dane Coolidge / Dec. 22, 1921 / Berkeley, California" John Edward Borein (1872-1945), son of a California deputy sheriff, was sketching Western subjects at the age of five. Encouraged by his family to become an artist, he matriculated at a San Francisco art school, but left after a month to work as a cowboy. In this pursuit he became highly proficient, although, encouraged by his awed fellow cowhands, he continued to draw and sketch in his spare time and, in 1896, began to see his work in print. He eventually developed an enviable competence as a watercolorist, but gave up painting in oils when he compared his work - unfavorably - with that of his friend Charles M. Russell In 1906 Borein moved to New York to work as an illustrator, and studied etching - which would become a specialty - at the Art Students' League. It was this which set him apart from his peers in Western art, and nearly 400 of his etchings are recorded. Seeped in the history and allurements of the West, he returned to California permanently in 1919, and it is to his native state that much of his work relates. By the 1930s his watercolors, produced with sparkling, vivid colors and conveying a flavor of authenticity without pretension, were enormously popular; they number over 1,000 examples. He is known as an artist "who got the details right" and his readily identifiable personal style sets him apart from others who depict the landscapes, the inhabitants, the history, and the sun-drenched aridity of the American West
