Constitution and Book of Laws, Made for the Government of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, Inc., and the African Communities League., of the World.

Pamphlet, 12mo, original printed pale blue wrappers, stapled, 40 pp. Very slight aging; near fine and an exceptional copy. Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was one of the most influential black leaders of the early 20th century. Unlike other black leaders, Garvey felt for blacks to really gain equality they would be better off going back to Africa. He was a strong champion of black separatism, feeling it was the only way to overcome racism, he even went as far as to propose alliance with white power groups, including the Ku Klux Klan (see An Appeal to the Soul of White America...). He felt the ends of the two groups were actually very similar. In 1914 Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement and Conservation Association and African Communities League, typically referred to as the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). This organization would probably have close to 75,000 members and would be dedicated to black advancement and uplift. Garvey was inspired by the ideas of Booker T. Washington, especially the notion of black enterprise. This pamphlet presents the by-laws of Garvey's organization, and is very scarce. The OCLC locates only two copies of this printing. While this edition is supposed to follow one published in July 1918, it is not clear if that edition was published. OCLC. ANB. #100979.$1150

UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART: UNCLE WIGGILY'S TRICKS: TRY THIS WITH YOUR

1920. 1. (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "Uncle Wiggily's Tricks: Try This With Your Piano" with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily (plus other characters). Each panel is remarkably detailed and amazingly has none of the usual white-out corrections that usually appear on these types of pieces.

"WHERE The WEST BEGINS". Spearfish, South Dakota. 1920 - 1923

Spearfish, S.D.:. 1920 - 1923.. Album: 7" x 10-7/8". Leaf size: 6-3/4" x 10-3/4". 80 pp. First & last blank.. Brown leather album with 8-line poem & image of a Native American standing beside a fire with smoke rising, printed and/or painted on front. ÒSpearfish S. D.Ó printed on rear cover. Brown cord tie.. Modest binding wear. Album - Very Good. Photographs - generally. clear & sharp. Very Good [or better].. The images primarily depict students, faculty and events at the Spearfish State Normal Training School, now Black Hills State University, in Spearfish, South Dakota, as well as geologic attractions in the vicinity. Such attractions include: Lookout Mountain, Spearfish Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls, DevilÕs Tower, Crystal Cave, Ice-Box Canyon, Black Hills, and more. Also featured are the areas of Deadwood and Lead, South Dakota. These photographs were evidently taken by a core group of friends Ð mostly women Ð who took trips into these areas, primarily in the summer of 1920. The town of Spearfish, South Dakota, was surveyed / staked out in 1876, and officially incorporated in 1888. Spearfish State Normal Training School was established in 1883, listed as having had 40 students in 1884. The School was renamed Black Hills Teachers College in 1941 and then officially designated Black Hills State College in 1967, and then University in the 1989. The album's compiler is not explictly stated, but we suspect Verna Stumpf, who is featured in ~ 60 of the photographs. As supporting evidence, we note there was one Verna Stumpf listed as Chemistry teacher on staff in 1921, the time of the photographs. There are also several photographs of the chemistry laboratory in the album. One of the photographs taken in 1923, mentions a Òboss,Ó which would add further weight to the argument that the compiler of the album was on staff of the school, which Verna was by that time. Verna Stumpf is almost always identified as ÒV. StumpfÓ when pictured. As the handwriting differs from that of the captions, and it would seem unlikely Verna herself would have written her own name underneath the relevant photographs, so we presume this was done later. This photograph album a wonderful primary source, offering a unique visual documentary glimpse into the early years of the University & surrounding western South Dakota. . 257 b/w images, size ranging from 2 x 1-1/2" to 6-1/2" x 8-1/2", with the majority either 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" or 3-1/2" x 2-1/2". Many are captioned in white pencil, albeit in 2 different hands.

        Das Verborgene Deutschland

Klingspor Offenbach a.M.: Klingspor, 1920. Small quarto. (5) ff. With hand-drawn and hand-colored initial and decorations by Rudolf Koch, the famed type designer and calligrapher at the Klingspor type foundry in Germany. This copy apparently was a proof copy, as it contains handwritten notes on changes to be made to the opening initial as well as the terminal paragraph decoration on the facing page. The author, Paul de Lagarde, was a renowned nineteenth century Bible scholar and orientalist as well as a virulent anti-semite and nationalist whose writings are thought to have influenced Hitler. Koch, for his part, had strong ties to Offenbach's Jewish community, and at one time produced a complete Haggadah. That the two men's work should be paired in this volume, then, is something of an historical curiosity. Slight bumping to spine at head and foot, else fine in pictorial boards.
