Nach den üblichen Schulen und einer Jugend in kleinbürgerlichen Verhältnissen in Zürich-Altstetten bricht Otto Baumberger eine Textilzeichnerlehre und Ausbildung zum Lithografen in einem Zürcher Handwerksbetrieb vorzeitig ab. 1908-1911 Studienaufenthalte in München an der Staatlichen Kunstgewerbeschule und Königl.-Bayerischen Akademie für Bildende Künste, anschliessend in Berlin, London und Paris, wo er die Akademien Colarossi und Grande Chaumière besucht. 1910 erste Teilnahme an einer Ausstellung der Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft. 1911 Lithograf an der Grafischen Anstalt J. E. Wolfensberger, Zürich. 1912 Heirat mit Hanni Manz, 1918 Geburt der Tochter Gertrud, im selben Jahr Trennung. 1913 erneute Reise nach Paris, Auseinandersetzung mit Expressionismus und Kubismus. Nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs Rückkehr in die Schweiz. 1920 Reise nach Berlin, durch Empfehlung von Max Reinhardt Engagement als Bühnenbildner am Deutschen Theater (1920 Urfaust, Regie Max Reinhardt); eine Daueranstellung schlägt Baumberger aus. 1922 Hilfslehrer an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich. In der Folge breites Betätigungsfeld: intensive Plakatproduktion für verschiedene Kunden, Buchillustrationen, Briefmarken, Wandmalereien, Mitarbeiter beim Nebelspalter und am Zürcher Stadttheater, wo er unter anderem 1923 die Bühnenbilder für Hoffmanns Erzählungen von Jacques Offenbach sowie 1933 für Lohengrin von Richard Wagner baut. 1927 Heirat mit der Grafikerin Johanna Pulver, 1929 Geburt von Sohn Rudolf Caspar. 1929 erneute Reise nach Paris zusammen mit Oscar Lüthy und Walter Kern, Auseinandersetzung mit der abstrakten Malerei. Auf Anregung von Otto Salvisberg erhält Baumberger 1932 einen Lehrauftrag an der Architektur-Abteilung der ETH Zürich für das neue Fach Beziehung der Farbe zu Bau und Raum und wird 1947 zum ausserordentlichen Professor ernannt. Ab 1935 intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Anthroposophie. Mitarbeit an der Schweizerischen Landesausstellung 1939 in Zürich: Wandbild mit Darstellungen aus der Schweizer Geschichte in der Abteilung Heimat und Volk sowie Bilder in der blauen Ehrenhalle. Ab 1943 neben grossen Erfolgen als Plakatgestalter vermehrt Auseinandersetzung mit christlichen Themen sowie der Weltliteratur (Faust, Divina Commedia, Don Quijote, Simplicius Simplicissimus, Ulenspiegel, Wilhelm Tell, Grimms Märchen) in Illustrationen und Malerei. 1949 Ausstellung zum 60. Geburtstag im Kunsthaus Zürich, die alle Sparten seines Schaffens vereint. 1959 Ausstellung in der Graphischen Sammlung der ETH. Im Alter von 72 Jahren stirbt Otto Baumberger in seinem Heim in Weiningen. Werkwürdigung: Die Wertschätzung, die dem Grafiker, vor allem dem Plakatgestalter, Otto Baumberger entgegengebracht wird, hat sein malerisches Schaffen in den Hintergrund gedrängt. In beiden Disziplinen lässt sich keine geradlinige Entwicklung feststellen; ein Nebeneinander von verschiedenen Stilen ist für Baumbergers Werk kennzeichnend. Dies hat die Literatur zum Teil als Problem, zum Teil aber auch als Ausdruck von grossem handwerklichen Können beurteilt. Zu Beginn seiner künstlerischen Arbeit ist Baumberger in erster Linie dem Expressionismus verpflichtet. In den grafischen Blättern mit gesellschaftskritischen Themen nähert er sich inhaltlich wie stilistisch George Grosz und Otto Dix an. Zusammen mit Fritz Pauli, Otto Morach, Hermann Huber und Ignaz Epper gehört Baumberger zu den wichtigsten Vertretern des Expressionismus in der Schweiz. Baumbergers Grafik und Plakate stehen ab 1910 hauptsächlich in der Tradition des Jugendstils, wie sie beispielsweise von Théophile Steinlen geprägt wurde. Ab 1915 übernimmt Baumberger Elemente des Art Déco, in den 20er Jahren der Neuen Sachlichkeit. Bemerkenswert ist, mit welcher Leichtigkeit er diese Stilrichtungen adaptiert. Seine Fähigkeit, eine bildliche Botschaft prägnant zu formulieren und zur Wirkung zu bringen, weist ihn als grosses Talent in der grafischen Gestaltung aus. Zudem beherrscht er praktisch alle Techniken der Grafik: Er ist ein hervorragender Lithograf, hat aber auch Holzschnitte und Radierungen geschaffen; zudem ist er ein guter Zeichner und bedient sich der Feder, des Bleistifts, der schwarzen Kreide und des Farbstifts mit der gleichen Selbstverständlichkeit. Um 1918 tauchen in seinem Plakatschaffen auch Exemplare mit symbolhaften Verkürzungen auf, zum Beispiel Jecklin, Baumann und Schweizer Woche, alle von 1919, sowie PKZ von 1925. Daneben haben in seinem Schaffen stets traditionelle Plakate, beispielsweise Schloss Kyburg von 1918 und Schöllenen-Bahn von 1919, ihren Platz. Zu zweifelhafter Berühmtheit gelangt ist sein Plakat von 1920, auf dem er mit einer karikaturhaften, bebrillten und maskulin gekleideten Frau für ein Nein zum Frauenstimmrecht warb. Als Klassiker des Schweizer Plakatschaffens gilt hingegen das Plakat Marque PKZ von 1923 mit seiner detailgetreuen Wiedergabe eines Herrenmantels mit aufgeschlagenem Kragen. In Plakaten zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs, zum Beispiel für das Rote Kreuz, bricht mit den aufrüttelnden Bildern von Verletzten und Hungernden Baumbergers expressionistischer Stil wieder durch. Bis ans Lebensende bleibt dieses Nebeneinander von verschiedenen Ausdrucksweisen bestehen. Otto Baumberger empfand seine Tätigkeiten sowohl im Bereich der angewandten als auch der freien Kunst, die er in seinen Schriften ungleich höher bewertete, immer als Konflikt, den er nicht zu lösen vermochte. One of 100 numbered copies of the deluxe edition printed on heavy "Zandersbütten" paper with handmade full vellum binding by Karl Ebert. Stamped golden border on front and rear board, gold lettering on spine. [2] pp. & 661 columns on 330 leaves & 1 numbered limitation page. Meticulously illustrated green and white initials throughout by Ansger Schoppmeyer. Parzival is a major medieval German romance by poet & knight Wolfram von Eschenbach. The 13th century poem centers on the Arthurian hero Parzival and his long quest for the Holy Grail. The work is loosely based on Chrétien de Troye's "Perceval, le Conte du Graal." Parzifal was the main source Richard Wagner used when writing the libretto to his opera, Parsifal. W. von Eschenbach himself appears as a character in another Wagner opera, Tannhäuser. Text of this edition transcribed by Karl Simrock. Parts of golden borders chipped, very minor foxing on front endpapers, otherwise binding and interior in exceptional condition. Inscribed by previous owner on front flyleaf, dated 11.4.33. (Includes original paper-covered card board slipcase, lacking top- and bottom edge, small hole on spine. Age wear and staining, slipcase in poor condition). Limitation page: "Georg Verlag zu München. First Edition, First Printing, with the year 1920 on both the title and copyright pages and "Published April, 1920" and the Scribner's Seal on the copyright page. The book is in good condition. Moderate soiling to the dark green cloth boards. The gilt lettering on the spine is faded. Old price in pencil on the front end paper. Both hinges are cracked, and as a result the text block is pulling from the spine. The very rare original dust jacket is from the tenth printing, which is stated at the top of the front panel. This tenth printing dust jacket has the same jacket art as the first state dust jacket. The dust jacket is in very good overall condition. Very minor wear to the spine. Chipping to the inner flap folds. Small chip to the top of the front panel. A very rare and collectible copy of Fitzgerald's debut novel. Belle et exceptionnelle épreuve rehaussée de couleur à la main de ce bois en hommage au tableau du Tintoret portant le même titre; dans le catalogue de l'exposition de l'Elysée où il figure sous le numéro 62, on y indique que quelques exemplaires d'essais furent partiellement colorés dans le fonds d'atelier retrouvé. Le nôtre l'est copieusement, dans des teintes ayant conservé toute leur fraîcheur tandis que les épreuves précitées ne comportent que les robes et la coiffe des deux voyeurs.Il s'agit, avec la paire du départ et du retour, de 1915 [cf 27 + 28], des plus grandes et plus belles compositions gravées et aquarelllées par l'artiste.

        WOMAN AND THE NEW RACE inscribed to Warren G. Harding

      Brentano's New York: Brentano's, (1920). First Edition. cloth. The spine is a little darkened with fraying at the tips, mostly at the head which has some loss. Many of the pages are unopened, indicating Harding decided not to read the book, with some of the clumsily opened pages resulting in tears but with no loss. Very Good, lacks the dustwrapper. A truly sensational association. Introduction by Havelock Ellis. Frontispiece portrait. Sanger's classic presentation of her feminist theories, including her belief that through birth control women will improve their lives and those of their children and husbands. Amazingly this copy is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author "With my compliments" to Warren G. Harding who would become the 29th president of the United States the same year as the publication of this book, the first election in which women were allowed to vote nationwide. What makes this presentation especially juicy is Harding's reputation as a philanderer. His own father once told him, "It's a good thing you weren't a girl, Warren, you'd be in the family way all the time. You can't say no" (Vrzalik & Minor, FROM THE PRESIDENT'S PEN, p. 84). Harding's only child was the result of a clandestine affair with a woman 30 years his junior, Nan Britton, who claimed their child was conceived in a White House closet (ibid). After the deaths of President and Mrs. Harding, Britton wrote a book, THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER (1927), dedicated "to all unwed mothers, and to their innocent children whose fathers are usually not known to the world." It sold 90,000 copies.

(6)pp., + (1)pp. A catalogue for an exhibition of work by Esther and Lucien Pissarro held December 2-29, 1920, printed at the Pelican Press for the Dorien Leigh Galleries. The catalogue features an introductory essay by Campbell Dodgson titled "Mr. Pissarro's Woodcuts," describing Pissarro's history and development as an artist over thirty years. The exhibition featured 164 items, all of which are described in the catalogue: individual wood engravings, including illustrations, initials, and bookplates, as well as Eragny Press books. Illustrated with a woodcut by the Pissarros to the front cover. The design depicts a woman sitting beneath an apple tree, holding an open book with the words "Eragny Press." A rare catalogue: only one institutional copy recorded. Accompanied by a one-page signed autograph letter from Lucien Pissarro to Laurence Hodson, an important collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts, dated July 9th, 1920. Hodson was particularly interested in the Arts & Crafts movement and the modern private presses of his day, including the Kelmscott Press, Vale Press, and Pissarro's own Eragny Press. In the letter, Pissarro thanks Hodson for his payment and writes "I am sending the portfolio by this post." He invites Hodson to visit and mentions that Hodson can being along his son, who is working at the Harmshire House Workshops. The Hampshire House Workshops, which featured a printing press, were founded by Hilary Pepler and others with the goal of providing work to refugees from the war. Catalogue has a faint crease to the front cover and a few light, scattered spots of foxing, letter has a short, closed tear, not affecting the text, else fine.

This original wooden "Book House" (c. 1927) holds two sets of volumes: My Bookhouse for Children, a six volume set comprised of (1) In The Nursery, 1925, 448 pp. (2) Through Fairy Tales, 1920, 448 pp. (3) Up One Pair of Stairs, 1927, 448 pp. (4) The Treasure Chest, 1920, 448 pp. (5) From The Tower Window, 1921, 448 pp. (6) The Latch Key, 1925, 448 pp. The second set,My Travelship, is a three volume set, comprised of (1) Little Pictures of Japan, 1925, 4to., 191 pp., illustrated by Katharine Sturges; (2) Tales Told in Holland, 1926, 4to., 193 pp., illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham; and (3) Nursery Friends From France, 1927, 4to., 191 pp., illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham. The Book House for children was founded in 1919 by Winnetka resident Olive Beaupre Miller (1883-1968), an American author, publisher, and editor of children's literature. She began by printing children's literature that Mrs. Miller personally edited to meet her own high standards. The individual books were sold door-to-door by a completely female sales force known as the "Bookhouse Ladies." By 1921 when all six of the original volumes were available, the complete set was offered in a cardboard house. The next three volumes, comprising My Travelship, were added in 1926, and the wooden book house was then offered only occasionally as a special promotion, and is therefore extremely rare. The Book House for Children was remarkable for its large female staff, at a time when most women did not work outside of the home. "The utilization of women in all phases of its business activity was one of the unique aspects of The Book House for Children. Not only was there an all-woman sales force but the majority of the employees were women." (Taylor: Olive Beaupre Miller and The Book House for Children). Extremely scarce..         OIL EXECUTIVE'S PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, MEXICO.

      (n d), (n. p.): - 167 b/w photographs, most approximately 3-1/2" x 4". During the 1920s Mexico was second only to the United States in petroleum production. Mexico's first oil boom was almost finished, but many oil corporations, entrepeneurs and small partnerships were still jockeying for position in the high production areas. U. S. and British oil companies soon drove out the wildcats and speculative prospectors, brought in hundreds of employees, and installed miles of pipeline in order to dominate transportation, storage and refining. This album appears to have been assembled by a Gulf Oil administrant working at this extraordinary time in the prolific Veracruz region: the Faja de Oro, or "Golden Lane". The photographs suggest that he was living for a time in the area, perhaps with his wife, working in a local office and touring the oilfields and other operations. Co-workers, friends and possibly family members are posed outside company housing and inside the offices of the Gulf Oil building in Tampico. He captured town street life, including a mounted Mexican army formation on parade, market scenes, and a holiday at the beach with ladies in hats and with umbrellas. He photographed Aguila, Terminal and Toteco colonies where the foreign workers were housed. There are a few river shots of boats and oil tankers. The most fascinating of his pictures show oil derricks, equipment, high-pressure blowouts, and oil- coated drilling crews working over the well casings. Two pages of photographs clearly show wells on fire with billowing smoke and enormous flames. Some individual wells are seen to be gushing at over 50,000 oil barrels (bbl) per day, and obviously required a superhuman effort to confine and control. At the end of the album are souvenir photos of a bullfight and a few tourist views of Monterrey and San Luis Potosi. Places noted in handwritten captions: Tampico, Miramar Beach (Tampico), Rio Tamesi, Aguila Col. (British Oil company subdivision), Panuco, Terminal, Amatlan, Tepetate, Zacamixtle, and Toteco. Some minor darkening to front cover, light soiling and rubbing to covers. Age toning (lightening) to black paper leaves. Photographs are in VG or better condition with a few exceptions, including one photograph with abraded areas. Captions and dates written in ink on photographs. One album reinserted (taped in) upside down. Overall, a unique VG to VG+ item. Brown leather binding with whip-stitched edges and a rawhide tie. Front cover embossed with Mexican emblems and the title "Mexico", back cover embossed with motifs and what look to be the initials "E" & "C". 7-3/8" x 12". Ca 1920.         Memorandum of the Secretary of State for War Relating to the Army Estimates for 1920-21

      Offered here is a scarce official government publication from Churchill's period as Secretary of State for War and Air - a Memorandum to Parliament regarding his Army Estimates for 1920-21 - meant to accompany his speech to Parliament of 23 February 1920. In January 1919, when he became Secretary of State for War and Air, Winston Churchill was only in his early 40s. Nonetheless, he was already a polarizing national figure who had already held several important Cabinet positions and been a force in national politics for nearly two decades. And he was already steeped in the politics, strategy, tactics, and realities of war. As a young man, he had seen and fought in wars on several continents, as both an insightful war correspondent and a professional soldier. In the First World War, Churchill's experience was truly singular, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front. Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after assuming questionable blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches, before being politically rehabilitated and returned to the Cabinet, before the war's end, as Minster of Munitions. As the new Secretary of State for War and Air in January 1919, Churchill immediately faced two overarching challenges: to demobilize the army that had fought the First World War, and to replace it with the army that would be prepared to fight future wars. On 23 February 1920, Churchill presented "The Army Estimates for 1920-21" to the House of Commons, announcing the final phases of demobilization and the replacement of the WWI army with "an entirely new Volunteer Army". The original government document offered here is Churchill's memorandum to Parliament "Issued in Amplification of the Speech of the Secretary of State introducing the Army Estimates for 1920-21." The two paragraph introduction by Churchill is dated 21 January, two days prior to Churchill's speech to Parliament. The Memorandum is intended to prepare the Parliamentary ground for the budgetary plow with what Churchill calls in his page 2 introduction "the interesting details". Churchill's speech to Parliament made the case for a very different army, bolstered by Churchill's assessment of major evolutions in strategic realities and the nature and mechanics of warfare itself. Churchill's memorandum offered here substantiates with details his requests and considerations, summarizing lessons of the war, the requirements of "the Future Army", and discussing a broad range of training, personnel policies, and organizational priorities. By all accounts, Churchill handled the mammoth task of demobilizing nearly 3.5 million British soldiers with success. Creating and sustaining a modern army proved more frustrating for Churchill, who found himself: "in charge of a War Office without a war, committed to economies". (See Martin Gilbert, Official Biography, Volume IV, p.506.) This very scarce document encapsulates much of Churchill's effort with respect to the army and offers a unique and substantial window into his time at the War Office. By 1921, he would be eager to leave the War Office, frustrated the lack of outlet for his talents and by differences with his Prime Minister. He would become Secretary of State for the Colonies in February 1921 and would not return to a military Cabinet post until the onset of the Second World War in 1939. This original Memorandum is in superlative, virtually mint, condition. There is absolutely no wear, no soiling, and no age-toning to either the covers or contents. Even the original string at the binding is bright, clean, and perfect. The only markings are official-looking ink stamped pagination (159-177) at the top right corners, indicating that this publication was likely once bound, which would explain the superlative condition. Dampstain to bottom third of spine extending partly to the covers but not showing internally. A Good copy at best with a fine inscription. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Edith---/With all my best, and/in the hope that our dune-/hiking took off a pound or/two/Gene/Provincetown, Nov. 1920." Edith was the wife of Frank Shay, one of O'Neill's first publishers and one of the Provincetown Players (He appeared in John Reed's FREEDOM in 1916.). Shay bought the Boni brothers bookshop (Boni later joined Horace Liveright, becoming O'Neill's next, and major, publisher) and brought out the three Provincetown Plays series: the first appearance in print of BOUND EAST FOR CARDIFF and BEFORE BREAKFAST. In 1920, he and Edith, along with the Hutchins Hapgoods, the Wilbur Daniel Steeles, Susan Glaspell, and Jig Cook were frequent visitors at Peaked Hill Bar with Agnes and Eugene O'Neill, all having children who were playmates.       New York & London: D. Appleton and Company, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Cloth rubbed, spine faded, still Very Good and exceptionally scarce when signed. Second Printing with "2" on the last page of text. Original red cloth, neatly rebacked with nearly all of the original spine retained. Winner of the third Pulitzer Prize ever given for Fiction and the first by a woman, this copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper to her close friends: "To my dear Matilda/& Walter Gay/Edith Wharton/December 1920." In addition, 14 pages of the text have brief pencil corrections by Wharton. A copy of Wharton's ARTEMIS TO ACTAEON inscribed to Matilda Gay sold at Sotheby's in 1976. We have been unable to locate any other signed copies of this title, Wharton's best known book, offered for sale in at least 30 years. When Walter Gay died in 1937, the same year Wharton died, he was dubbed the "Dean of American Painters in France" in his New York Times obituary. One of his better known paintings is of Edith Wharton's bedroom, which he inscribed to her. Matilda Gay attended Wharton's funeral.

Huge braid sample book (17 x 11 inches) comprising an accordion style page format with dozens of examples of finely braided silk and other fabrics, some pages having over 200 separate examples. A total of 25 separate leaves, each cloth backed and covered with thick printed paper with the company's information and decorative designs on every page. Some of the examples are missing, but greater than 90% are present. Occasional wear and soiling to covers, internally near fine. A scarce survival. We could find no similar item on the net, nor track down any information about this company.

First American Edition, which consisted of 377 copies numbered and signed by Conrad (this being copy #49). Little by little, Conrad's play "One Day More" (a dramatization of his 1903 tale "To-Morrow") was becoming more and more available to the public: in 1917 Clement Shorter issued a 25-copy edition, and in 1919 the Beaumont Press issued a 274-copy one (of which 24 were signed). This first one in America consisted of 377 numbered signed copies. The play was not available to "the masses" until 1924, when Doubleday Page issued a trade edition of it together with Conrad's play "Laughing Anne."~This is an atypically near-fine copy, with only the very slightest of cover soil, plus a hint of rubbing at the foot of the spine; the book was issued with no dust jacket other than a glassine wrapper. Authenticity has been established by Swann Galleries, but debated by a Bonnard scholar. Priced accordingly. Pierre Bonnard (October 3,1867 - January 23, 1947) was a French painter and printmaker known particularly for the decorative qualities of his paintings and his individual use of colour. During his life he was associated with other artists, Edouard Vuillard being a good friend, and he was a founding member of the Nabis. His work is part of the permanent collections at the Met, MoMA, Guggenheim, the Louvre, and other major museums.
