Strategic Camougflage

London: John Murray,, 1920. London: John Murray,, 1920. Quarto. Original green-blue cloth, title gilt to the upper board and spine. Frontispiece and 30 other plates, 26 of them black and white, 2 of them folding, and 4 coloured. Just a little rubbed, small spot to the upper cover amateurishly recoloured, the endpapers lightly browned, some foxing, front, back and marginally, neat red pencil underlining throughout. First edition. Trained at Heatherley's, the Royal Academy Schools, the Munich Academy, and École des Beaux-Arts, at the outbreak of the War in 1914 Solomon was well-established as a society portraitist and painter of popular painter of biblical, mythological, and genre subjects. Signed up as a private in the Artist's Rifles, he began to promote his ideas about the importance and application of camouflage through the press, eventually attracting the attention of the War Office. Late in 1915, Plumer arranged for Solomon to visit the Western Front to study the techniques being employed by the French École de Camouflage, which was headed by the head scene painter from the Opéra de Paris. As a result he was sent to France to establish a camouflage section, Haig having arranged that he be given the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in order for him to be able to carry forward the section's work effectively. Later in the war he was recalled to London where he concentrated on perfecting the concealment of large areas of terrain, a subject which he addresses in the present work. Ownership inscription of Cha[rle]s W[illiam] Glover, dated 1939, to the front free endpaper, and his textual markings. Glover was an architect, head of the consulting architects C.W. Glover & Partners, and a leading expert on acoustics, during the war the firm was responsible for numerous projects for which a grasp of Solomons' principles would have been essential, for example the provision of the whole of St. Pancras with air-raid shelters. Glover is probably best-known today for his 1931 scheme to built an airport on top of King's Cross station. A nicely provenanced copy of an uncommon, and important work.

Memorandum of the Secretary of State for War Relating to the Army Estimates for 1920-21

London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1920. 1st Edition. Paperback. Fine. Offered here is a scarce official government publication from Churchill's period as Secretary of State for War and Air - a Memorandum to Parliament regarding his Army Estimates for 1920-21 - meant to accompany his speech to Parliament of 23 February 1920. In January 1919, when he became Secretary of State for War and Air, Winston Churchill was only in his early 40s. Nonetheless, he was already a polarizing national figure who had already held several important Cabinet positions and been a force in national politics for nearly two decades. And he was already steeped in the politics, strategy, tactics, and realities of war. As a young man, he had seen and fought in wars on several continents, as both an insightful war correspondent and a professional soldier. In the First World War, Churchill's experience was truly singular, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front. Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after assuming questionable blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches, before being politically rehabilitated and returned to the Cabinet, before the war's end, as Minster of Munitions. As the new Secretary of State for War and Air in January 1919, Churchill immediately faced two overarching challenges: to demobilize the army that had fought the First World War, and to replace it with the army that would be prepared to fight future wars. On 23 February 1920, Churchill presented "The Army Estimates for 1920-21" to the House of Commons, announcing the final phases of demobilization and the replacement of the WWI army with "an entirely new Volunteer Army". The original government document offered here is Churchill's memorandum to Parliament "Issued in Amplification of the Speech of the Secretary of State introducing the Army Estimates for 1920-21." The two paragraph introduction by Churchill is dated 21 January, two days prior to Churchill's speech to Parliament. The Memorandum is intended to prepare the Parliamentary ground for the budgetary plow with what Churchill calls in his page 2 introduction "the interesting details". Churchill's speech to Parliament made the case for a very different army, bolstered by Churchill's assessment of major evolutions in strategic realities and the nature and mechanics of warfare itself. Churchill's memorandum offered here substantiates with details his requests and considerations, summarizing lessons of the war, the requirements of "the Future Army", and discussing a broad range of training, personnel policies, and organizational priorities. By all accounts, Churchill handled the mammoth task of demobilizing nearly 3.5 million British soldiers with success. Creating and sustaining a modern army proved more frustrating for Churchill, who found himself: "in charge of a War Office without a war, committed to economies". (See Martin Gilbert, Official Biography, Volume IV, p.506.) This very scarce document encapsulates much of Churchill's effort with respect to the army and offers a unique and substantial window into his time at the War Office. By 1921, he would be eager to leave the War Office, frustrated the lack of outlet for his talents and by differences with his Prime Minister. He would become Secretary of State for the Colonies in February 1921 and would not return to a military Cabinet post until the onset of the Second World War in 1939. This original Memorandum is in superlative, virtually mint, condition. There is absolutely no wear, no soiling, and no age-toning to either the covers or contents. Even the original string at the binding is bright, clean, and perfect. The only markings are official-looking ink stamped pagination (159-177) at the top right corners, indicating that this publication was likely once bound, which would explain the superlative condition. A Notable Law Suit

1920. A Literary Hoax on a Legal Subject Head, Franklin D. [Olmsted, Frederick Law (1822-1903)]. A Notable Law Suit. Np, Privately Printed, ca. 1920s? 54 single-sided typed sheets. Autograph letter from Arthur P. Rugg, signed, bound in before title page. 8" x 6-1/4." Cloth, gilt title to front board, cord tie, marbled endpapers. A one-page Autograph Letter Signed is bound in before title page. Cloth pocket on inside of rear board imprinted in gilt, "Sequel," containing within it an envelope, also titled "Sequel," containing a one-page, bifoliate autograph letter, signed, a four-page, typed circular letter and a two-page typed copy of a letter. Some separation along seam on cloth pocket along fore-edge, otherwise very good. * Franklin D. Head's after-dinner conversation about treasure buried on the coast of Maine by the notorious pirate Captain Kidd resulted in the writing of a tongue-in-cheek story intended only for intimate friends, but which soon afterwards, because of a very convincing narrative, was taken for a true tale. The work's title refers to a supposed lawsuit between Frederick Law Olmsted, the noted landscape architect, and members of the Astor family. Olmsted purportedly accused the Astors of stealing Kidd's treasure from Olmsted's family's land on Deer Isle, Maine. It was Olmsted's daughter Marion's after-dinner conversation with the author that led to the production of this, to use Frederick Law Olmsted's words, "burlesque hoax." While it is unclear who produced the present book or when it was printed (typed), it is possible that the main text was copied from an edition privately printed around 1898. The present copy is distinguished by the inclusion of the Frederick Law Olmsted's "sequel" in which he explains the hoax. The sequel is in the form of a circular letter and is itself likely a typed copy. The two autograph letters were written by Massachusetts Chief Justice Arthur P. Rugg [1815-1938]. Dated June 23, 1923, both letters are likely addressed to Charles A. DeCourcy [1857-1924], Associate Justice of Massachusetts. Rugg's bound-in letter presents this copy of the book to DeCourcy and his second letter, a kind of cover letter housed in the pocket with the sequel, sheds further light on the unmasking of the hoax. Rugg also includes a typed copy of a letter from his friend and pastor, Shepard Kna

Stories from the Old Testament Retold

The Hogarth Press, Richmond,, 1920. Octavo. Original blue paper wrappers, white label lettered in black on front cover. Spine cracked but holding, edges of wrappers a little yellowed, overall a good copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy with the author's inscription to someone with the same surname, i.e. "G[----]. Smith from the author". Woolmer notes that this is apparently bound by the Woolfs, as the wrappers appear in a number of differing colours and designs; this copy matches Woolmer's description of it. The number of copies printed is not known, although 439 copies were sold by the end of August 1923, and it was out of print in 1925, suggesting that the print-run was a small one.

        Toi et Moi (hand-painted vellum)

Paris: Librairie Block, 1920 Paris: Librairie Block (no date, but 1920's). 12mo, 148 pp. Paintings by Z. Z. de Vesley. Quarter vellum and hand-painted marbled boards with hand-painted watercolor illustrations at corners and spine, top edge gilt. Original bookmark ribbon still in place. Very modest, light shelfwear, faint dampstain at lower fore edge corners of pages, a uniquely beautiful binding, between very good plus and near fine. Paul Geraldy (1885-1983), French poet and playwright, may have been born for Valentine's Day. A walking compendium of romantic quotes, his Toi at Moi - probably his most famous oeuvre - is a collection of poetry dealing with the mysteries of love. Artist de Vesley's painted vellum binding, using chimerical ink-pastels, matches the mood in a way which defies words. One envisions this having been at one time proffered as the consummately heart-touching Valentine to -what lady fair ? It is the woman who chooses the man who will choose her (Geraldy). Maybe back in the roaring twenties, that happened, when this little opus was itself young. A painted melody of enchanting visual aspect -as we say now, curb appeal - and words of rending tone. Certainly unique, and not replaceable. Please review scans. L-42n
