        Über Polymerisation (pp.1073-1085).

Chem. Ber., 53/1. Mit S.Schotz (pp.1105-1124).siehe - Rolf Mülhhaupt, Hermann Staudinger and the Origin of Macromolecular Chemistry, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Volume 43, Issue 9 (pp.1054-1063)

Dadaistische Fox-Trot" - Original Sheet Music

Berliner Bohème-Verlag K. Brüll, Berlin 1920 - Dada, dadaistischer Fox-trot für Trottel und Solche - die es noch werden Wollen. Worte von DaDa Beda. Musik von Ober-DaDa Hajós. ("Dada, dadaistic foxtrot for fools and those who want to become fools. Words by DaDa Beda. Music by Arch-DaDa Hajos.") An extremely rare song parodying the Dada movement, with music by the Hungarian composer Karl Hajos and lyrics by Fritz Löhner-Beda, one of the most famous Viennese songwriters of his time, and graphically striking illustrated wrappers by Wolfgang Ortmann. The nonsense lyrics poke fun at the absurdist use of language in Dada and at the movement's cult status: the beginning of the chorus translates as "Dada, O holy Dada, O loudmouthed Dada, hear my prayer." Published in 1920, coinciding with the First International Dada Fair in Berlin, the song must have appealed to Berliners who found the movement's gatherings and publications bizarre and amusing. Upright folio. 6 pp. Toned, spine reinforced internally with paper tape, two small early tape repairs to inside front cover with resultant staining, lower edges lightly chipped. Very scarce; WorldCat displays only one copy, at the National Gallery of Art Library, Washington DC. The Austrian librettist, lyricist, and writer Fritz Löhner-Beda was an important voice in 1920's Vienna. He wrote and produced several operas with Franz Léhar, including Das Land des Lächelns and Giuditta. He was arrested by Nazi forces in 1938 because of his Jewish background, and held in Dachau, Buchenwald, and finally Auschwitz, where he was beaten to death in 1942. He is particularly remembered for his Buchenwaldlied, the anthem of the Buchenwald camp, with its line "Wir wollen trotzdem Ja zum Leben sagen" ("We still want to say yes to life.")Hungarian-born composer Karl Hajos worked in Vienna, where he founded the "Pierrot" publishing house, before emigrating to the United States in 1924. In Hollywood, he composed music for over 100 films in the late silent era.

(Broadside): Requiescat in Pace. Ald. Terence McSwiney (Lord Mayor of Cork)... Died in Brixton Prison, October 25th 1920 After a Hunger Strike Lasting Seventy Four Days. Age 40. His Last Words "God Save Ireland, Fight On! Fight On!

London: Printer Burgess, 1920. Near Fine. Souvenir broadside or napkin. Approximately 13.5" x 13.5". Printed in black and purple on thin Japanese paper or tissue. Contemporarily mounted on buff-colored cardstock. Slight bleedthrough from the glue used in mounting, near fine. A commemoration of the death due to a hunger strike by the Sinn Fein Mayor of Cork, giving the order of the funereal procession. McSwiney was an Irish playwright, poet and pamphleteer. A leader of the Irish Nationalists in Kerry and Cork, he was arrested in Cork for possession of seditious articles and documents, while serving as Mayor. He immediately went on a hunger strike. His death focused world attention on the Irish Question, and his processions in both London and Cork drew huge crowds. Souvenir napkins survive to some degree, but seldom in nice condition, because of the thin material and they were usually stored folded. We acquired a few napkins where the owner had the forethought to mount them, probably almost immediately.

THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER In Seven Parts

George G. Harrap, London 1920 - Deluxe edition. Stunning work of art. Quarto. 9 3/4 in (25 cm) tall; unpaginated. No date, circa 1920. Printed by H. & J. Pillans & Wilson, Edinburgh. Fine binding in olive green morocco with bright gold-stamped ornamentation, lettering and jewel-toned accents to front cover; bright gold-stamped illustrations and letters to spine. Hand sewn headbands. Top edge gilt; others untrimmed. As befitting Coleridge's dramatic epic poem, Willy Pogany has extensively gilt tooled the spine and front cover with pictures including a ship of color leather inlays and has fully decorated every page. To paraphrase Vadeboncoeur, "Willy Pogany's art nouveau masterpiece. The large format allowed Pogany to pull out all the stops. Each page is at least two colors, sometimes with a gilt plate and usually an intricate border added. Extra-elaborate initials started each page, with simply ornate capitals for the beginning of each line. An illuminated title page, 20 tipped-in color plates, the second color added to the black and white plates, the flowing calligraphic text, and the numerous pen & ink drawings throughout make this special." Tight binding. Square corners. Fine tipped-in plates. Heavy stock, cream pages largely clean and unmarred with no bookplate, writing, salient marks, or tears; no loose pages. Clear protective cover. Crown and top corners chafed, rear cover with minor scratch, pastedowns with outer edges glue-toned, blanks foxed, pages and edges with intermittent light foxing, opening pages with light crease. Well-preserved, finely bound, epic poem lavishly illustrated by Willy Pogany. Vadeboncoeur, bpib online. Rarebookhub online. Very good+. No Jacket as issued [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Zionism. Handbook prepared under the direction of the Historical Section of the Foreign Office - No. 162.

London H.M. Stationary Office January 1920 - 14 x 21.5 cm; 48 pp., original printed wrappers. Spine slightly sunned and rubbed. A fine copy. A "Zionism handbook" published by the British Foreign Office created to educate British Delegates to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. "In the spring of 1917 the Foreign Office, in connexion with the preparation which they were making for the work of the Peace Conference, established a special section whose duty it should be to provide the British Delegates to the Peace Conference with information in the most convenient form - geographical, economic, historical, social, religious, and political - respecting the different countries, districts, islands, &c., with which they might have to deal. In addition, volumes were prepared on certain general subjects, mostly of an historical nature, concerning which it appeared that a special study would be useful." This work was originally published for internal use of British diplomats, as part of a large series of books on the various regions and colonies. Towards 1920, as "the Peace Conference nearly completed its task" these series were issued for public use. Contents include: a chronological summary of Zionism, starting in 720 B.C.; Zionism in the bible; Zionism under the various rulers of the Holy Land; anti-Semitism and modern Zionism; and other chapters. The last chapter contains statements and speculations in regards to "The Future of Palestine", in reference to the Balfour declaration. This last chapter included phrases, such as "Arabs are not jealous of Zionist Jews and intend to give them fair play", which sound especially intriguing when taking into account the big Arab Riots in Palestine in April of 1920, which began already in 1919, initiated by Haj Amin el-Husseini.         Photographic Archive chronicling the life of Arturo Toscanini

NBC, etc, Milan, New York etc 1920 - [100 photos] Substantial collection of vintage photographs of the Italian-American conductor, Arturo Toscanini. In a variety of formats, many of the photographs with press stamps and annotations to the verso explaining the circumstances of the images. Toscanini is shown on and off the podium, travelling to Capri in 1929, arriving in New York City; with friends, family and dignitaries, on tour at home, indefatigable and finally 'laying in state' in 1957. Some of the most moving photographs come from a sequence of smaller images showing the maestro rehearsing in old age, taken from behind the orchestra as the old man studies his score and exhorts his players to ever great efforts. Toscanini's long career brought him to a worldwide audience especially after the NBC Symphony Orchestra was created as a vehicle for his talents in 1937. This collection conveys some sense of the range and scope of a remarkable life. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more details.

Mason was jailed at Lexington, Mississippi, for allegedly preaching against the war, although he sold bonds to help the war efforts. William B. Holt, one of the white brethren targeted by the FBI for suspicion, was a lawyer and former Nazarene preacher who traveled to Lexington to post a two-thousand dollar cash bond for Mason's release..         ORIGINAL SKETCH, A DRAWING OF THE STAGE SET IN A THEATRICAL PRODUCTION

Circa 1920 - Signed by Nielsen at the foot of the drawing. an original pen and pencil drawing with wash on heavy cream coloured stock. The stock roughly 360 by 265mm, signed at the bottom, the image itself roughly 270 by 175mm, now matted in blue boards and with protective plastic sleeve. A RARELY ENCOUNTERED DRAWING BY ONE OF THE FOREMOST ILLUSTRATORS OF THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY. The Nielsen drawing is quite an interesting piece. It seems possible that it might have been intended for use as a set design, but it is also a rather accomplished drawing which has very finished elements such as the figure at the far left and the figure facing. These incorporate Nielsen's best traits as an artist. The figure to the far right seems also to have a wash applied as the artist might have done while beginning his water colour work. A working figure underlies one of the finished ones, and the drawing is signed by Nielsen at the bottom of the plate. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Schiff's importance lies, first of all in the fact he depicted indelible characters that manifest what it meant to dwell in Shanghai, then an international City. . "He manipulates his works as a form of attack. Socially marginalized groups, such as prostitutes, 'taxi-girls' and beggars, are all subjects of his scrutiny." . *** Gerd Kaminski, author of a chronicle and geographical study of the artist, described the opus of Schiff as extensive, ascertaining that cartooning was the genre that prodded him into telling stories from the point of view of a spectator on the street. See below. . * "Schiff's opus goes beyond cartoons and illustrations for newspapers. Artistically, he was equally excellent in landscape and portrait oil paintings, gouache and watercolor works," Kaminski said. . * "Schiff, from the very beginning of his residency in China, had already developed sharp eyes -not only in face-reading Chinese physiognomy, but also the social realities in which Chinese and foreigners were being subjected to." . *** THE SETTING: The setting is the "Roaring 1930's Shanghai" scene. Sketches depict the Free-Wheeling, "Anything Goes" wild attitudes of "why not" war torn Shanghai. . * THE SKETCHES: TWENTY-ONE HAND-COLORED DRAWINGS: . The first page shows a beautiful, slinky Chinese girl in Cheongsam: "Miss Shanghai: "Me no worry-me no care ! Me go marry millionaire ! If he die me no cry ! Me go marry other guy !!" . Followed by 19 other full-page hand-colored drawings. Some with and with out captions, the meanings obvious ! . These fascinating color-drawings shows how Occidentals inter-relate with the Chinese & western [mostly Russian] girls, Shanghai Party time English style, "Having a Ripping Time," American sailors caress and dance with their willowy Chinese girls wearing sexy Cheongsam split up to their hips. . Also stunningly beautiful, blond & blue-eyed Russian prostitutes with their Chinese sisters competing for the Yankee dollar. "Taxi-girls, "sing-song girls," bar girls, lonely and hungry house wives. . *** THE MEANING OF "MASKEE:" The tile "MASKEE" is a very old China coast Pidgin English corruption of the Portuguese word meaning "Never Mind." This and other Pidgin English was commonly used by both Chinese and foreigners along the treaty port cities on China's east coast since the 1820's. . *** THE HAND-COLORED ART WORK: Schiff drew the illustrations, then had the book printed in black-outline, after which he hand-colored each page and signed the title page, adding a hand-written number on the last page. . *** BINDING: The work was bound in various colors of silk [red, maroon, green, blue], with brocade designs, such as bamboo, or the dragon. There may have been other variant colors, we do not pla

White (Charlotte's Web), one of Strunk's first students and greatest admirers, who, in 1957, updated and revised the "Little Book," adding an introduction and a chapter on style] waded through the totality of our vast and complicated language and boiled it down to a terse 105 pages, including a glossary and index. No exhaustive explanations or sentence diagrams here--just 22 style rules and principles of composition, followed by 'a few matters of form,' a conclusive list of misused words and phrases and an all-encompassing 'guide to style.'" . . .         Collection of 14 political flyers distributed during the 1919 and 1920 elections in Bavaria

Various: German Political Parties, 1920. Hardcover. fair to vg. Various sizes. Original printed flyers on various papers and in various colors. An extraordinary mirror of the political climate in Bavaria two years after the end of W.W.I exhibited in 9 letter size and 4 smaller size election flyers. The tenor of all flyers reflects the extremely agitated atmosphere of the time warning the voters in drastic language to beware of corruption and profiteering of the Hoffmann government and its followers on one hand, and of the Jewish population, bolshevism and socialism as administered by the representatives of the Räterepublik on the other. The content of the flyers varies from patriotic to educational and propaganda bids to expose the true nature of the Räterepublik.Among the parties and institutions responsible for the distribution of the flyers are the Bayrische Mittelpartei claiming that no Jewish citizens are members and belaboring the failure of the current system, the Deutsche Demokratische Partei boldly announcing election fraud. Appeals by the Bayrische Volkspartei to vote for their candidates and the Deutsche Volkspartei calling for unity against Bolshevism and "Red Terror." A flyer by the NSDAP printed on both sides with an appeal to duplicate and distribute points out a "Times" exposure on the Jewish world program to enslave the peoples of the world under Jewish rule. The Bayrische Volkspartei addresses women and girls in warning against radical leftist elements, militias (Einwohnerwehr, Wachregiment and Reichswehr) attacking the Räterepublik, a flyer by private citizens warning against the communist social democrat party (KPD and USP), a flyer by the publisher "Staatspolitischer Verlag" with caricatures taunting various political factions pointing out the Deutsche Volkspartei as the best choice for the elections, and an "unclaimed" small flyer attacking Jews, the stock marketeers, communists and traitors.Texts in German. The letter size flyer all have filing punch holes on the left side. There are small tears, one flyer with six inch closed tear, chips, creasing and some age toning. Flyers mostly in good to very good condition.

        Deposizione.

L’anno seguente partecipa all’Esposizione Internazionale di San Francisco dove è premiato. A Trento ritrae l’Arcivescovo Celestino Endrici.

THE LURE OF THE PAST ..

London: Stanley Paul & Co, [1920].. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-256, original tan cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. "A weird horror novel about a Londoner who is drawn back, partly through the use of drugs, into his former lives in Egypt and Rome, a process that exhausts his vitality and attachment to the present until it kills him. Commercial fiction, to be sure, but a notch above the pulp turned out by Wright & Brown, Jenkins, etc., and, though not as rare as his THE WINE OF DEATH (1925), a scarce book as well. Only one holding given by OCLC (at UCLA, in the Nitka Collection -- as is the sole OCLC holding of THE WINE OF DEATH). This is not your grandmother's vaporous reincarnation romance." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1978), p. 10. Reginald 00493. Early owner's signature on front paste-down. Cloth a bit rubbed at spine ends, corner tips and along outer joints, free endpapers tanned with some offset on first and last leaves of text, but overall a solid, clean, very good copy of an uncommon book.

The Letters. Edited by his son Henry James. In two volumes. Illustrated.

Boston: The Atlantic Monthly Press, 1920 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, paper label to spines lettered and ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. With the dust jackets. Spines of dust jackets a little faded and a few minor nicks to spine ends, one small archival repair to jacket spine of vol. II; a fine set in excellent dust jackets. Photographic frontispieces with tissue guards, 13 plates and tailpiece illustrations. Small bookplate to front pastedowns and contemporary ownership inscription of Josephine B. Crane to front free endpapers. First edition, first printing, of a selection of James's correspondence, published to "throw the strongest light" on the celebrated philosopher's life and writings. A contemporary reviewer for The North American Review judged that the letters were "rich in their concise and accessible condensations of James's profounder convictions" (Gilman, p. 415). This set was given to American socialite and patron of the arts, Josephine B. Crane, by a friend for Christmas, 1920. Crane is remembered primarily as a co-founder and original trustee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She was also a key benefactress of the elite Dalton School, which derived its name from the Crane family estate located in Sugar Hill, Dalton (the address which appears on the bookplates).         Peking. A Historical and Intimate Description of its Chief Places of Interest.

Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Hankow, Kelly & Walsh, Limited, 1922. 8vo. Original orange cloth, lettered in black, I,age of pagoda blocked in gilt on front cover, original dust-wrapper printed in orange and black; pp. [2], x, [4], 523, highly illustrated with plates after photographs and folding plans, wrappers with small flaws at head and tail of spine, light offsetting from endpapers, a few light spots here and there, otherwise a very beautiful copy with the rarely seen wrappers. Second edition (first, 1920), considerably enlargedand revised. The writer Juliet Bredon (c. 1881-1937) was the daughter of Sir Robert Edward Bredon, Bt (1846-1918), Deputy Inspector-General Imperial Maritime Customs, China, (1898-1908) and Acting Inspector-General of Customs with rank of Provincial Lieutenant-Governor (1908-1910). She spent much of her life in China, marrying Charles Lauru of Beijing, and she published a number of works on the country, including the present work, Chinese Shadows (Beijing: 1922), The Moon Year. A Record of Chinese Customs and Festivals (Shanghai: 1927), and a biography of her uncle, the famous inspector-general of customs in China, Sir Robert Hart Bt -- whose abilities and service were so highly regarded by the Chinese that 'his Chinese honours excelled in number and distinction those bestowed on any other European' (DNB) -- which was published in 1909. In her preface, Bredon explains that, 'Several books have been written about Peking by foreigners, but among these only two are comprehensive - Monseigneur Favier's monumental work Peking and Father Hyacinth Bitchurin's Description of Peking. This paucity of accurate accounts is chiefly due to the obstacles in the way of collecting precise information. The more one studies the fascinating old city, the more one realises the tantalising difficulties of learning, even from the Chinese themselves, anything but the merest outline of its history and monuments. A proper appreciation of Peking is not, I believe, in the power of a Westerner to give - certainly not of one single person - since it pre-supposes a thorough knowledge of China's past, an infinite sympathy with Chinese character and religions, an intimate sympathy with Chinese character and religions, an intimate familiarity with the proverbs and household phrases of the poor, the songs of the streets, the speech of the workshop, no less than the mentality of the literati and the motives of the rulers' (p. vii). Therefore, her book intends to provide a fuller description of the city than a conventional guide-book that will be of interest to the general reader: 'it aims at nothing original, - is simply a gathering up of the information of others, a gleaning from what has already been given to the world in a far better and fuller but less portable form. Its purpose is simply to play the part of a friend to resident and visitor alike - a friend (in whose taste you perhaps have confidence) to take you by the arm for a stroll through the city and its suburbs' (pp.viii). However, Bredon's book has subsequently become a very useful source on life in Beijing during the early twentieth century (and especially its architecture), and is widely cited in later literature on the period.
