        Kingdom of the Pearl, The

1920. first edition. Edmund Dulac?'s Illustrations for ?"The Kingdom of the Pearl?"[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. ROSENTHAL, Léonard. The Kingdom of the Pearl. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. London: Nisbet & Co., [n.d., 1920].One of 675 unsigned copies (this copy being No. 613), out of a total edition of 775 copies ?"for sale in the British Empire?" (an additional 775 copies were published by Brentano?'s, New York, in 1925 ?"for sale in the United States of America?"). Large quarto (11 1/4 x 9 inches; 285 x 230 mm.). [12], 150, [1], [1, printer?'s imprint] pp. Ten mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards.Original quarter white cloth over gray paper boards. Front cover stamped in silver with a design of stylized waves and sea shells and with a white paper label with gray lettering, spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, gray decorative endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Small split at lower edge of spine, lower board edges and corners a little rubbed. An excellent copy.?"Au Royaume de la Perle was first published in Paris (by Payot) in 1919 without benefit of the Dulac illustrations which the author Mr. Rosenthal so eagerly sought. But when, in 1920, Dulac found time to produce 10 pictures, Mr. Rosenthal not only purchased the water colours, but had another publisher, Piazza of Paris, publish a 1,500-copy new edition of his ?'Perle?' book with the Dulac illustrations. Also Dulac reveals in a reply to a Mr. Carroll of Massachusetts who hoped to buy one of the ?'Pearl?' illustrations that Mr. Rosenthal also purchased the copyright to the 10 pictures. However Mr. Rosenthal did allow his book with Dulac pictures and in English translation to be published in England by The Nisbet Publishing House…The English edition, although praised by The Times Literary critic as Dulac ?'at his best?' and ?'fantastically Persian,?' was not a commercial success. In order to make use of the 775 sheets remaining from 1,550 printed for the English edition, arrangements were made in 1925 to market an edition through Brentano?'s, booksellers in New York…The ?'Pearl?' pictures indeed display a ripening of a Dulac style first seen in Sindbad the Sailor, employed in some of his Fairy Book pictures and developed fully in The Tanglewood Tales. It is a Persian miniature style, but made quite his own…His plates, truly genius, do much to bring a fanciful touch to the otherwise stark exposition of a treatise on pearls?" (Hughey).Hughey 54c.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

The six full page black and white plates are also the same as in the English edition except that the plate "How Queen Morgan le Fay stole away the scabbard from Arthur" (facing p. 45) does not appear in the French edition. The French edition additionally has some different small drawings and historiated initials that do not appear in the English edition.Alexandre Arnoux (1884-1973) was a French screenwriter. Inspired by the founding texts and variances that constitute the essence of the Arthurian legend, he has written an epic vision of the character of Arthur and his knights of the Round Table at the court of Camelot. A fantasy world full of sound, fury, and the magic of Merlin, it is the source of many artistic creations on both the literary level - examples of which are too numerous to mention - as film or graphics, from the pre-Raphaelite painters to John Howe, and of course Arthur Rackham is one of the most prestigious of these representatives. Rackham's illustrations have fascinated us by their elegance and their incredible use of colors throughout the generations of readers in English-speaking countries.Latimore and Haskell, p. 47.         W.I. SWAIN'S WESTERN SPECTACULAR PRODUCTION JESSE JAMES. "HANDS UP SHERIFF?" "THE PRISON IS NOT BUILT THAT WILL HOLD JESSE JAMES

Newport, Ky., 1920. Several tears at edges, two of them significantly affecting the image. Some chipping and loss along top left and lower right edges, also a bit in top right corner. Still, a striking image. Good plus. An attractive poster advertising one of W.I. Swain's popular touring western shows, this one featuring Jesse James, who in this portrayal has an African-American as a member of his gang. The illustration shows three men on the right edge with their hands held high, while a fourth man next to them weakly drops his gun. On the left side a cocky man in a white shirt (presumably James) points a six shooter at the men across the room, while a blonde woman in a red dress stands with one foot on a chair and the other on a desk, also pointing guns at the men. Anomalously, in the center of the image, through a window, a black man in a red shirt also points two guns at the men on the right, while inside the room a black woman kneels and pleads with the man in the window. Colonel W.I. Swain was one of the most successful tent showmen in the South. He often toured a minstrel show, putting on a different performance every night for a week. The shows were continued by Swain's son, Kennedy, well into the 1940s.

Photograph Album Documenting Pacific Northwest Lumbering Operations: 1910s-1920s

Oregon, 1920. Photograph Album. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 8" x 11" album with approximately 325 photographs ranging in size from about 3"x3" to 5"x7". Said to have come from an Oregon estate. Photographs are in nice shape; a few have creases, chips, and edge wear. Most are glued onto the pages, and most are uncaptioned. The album has some light wear at its edges, and the original binding tie has been replaced. The first fifty to sixty photographs are of a logging operation and show workers, their cabins, their families, what appears to be a large saw mill, trestle construction, logging locomotives (one is marked "OMCo.") and work cars, draught horses pulling sleighs through deep snow, work crews including one of a mess line in deep snow, and more. One photo shows the front of an old automobile, but I haven't been able to identify the state of the license plate. Another ten to fifteen show street scenes with store fronts, a school (St. Patrick's Parochial School), a church, and the inside of an ice cream parlor or luncheonette. The remainder are photos of people at home, camping, hiking, swimming, hunting, boating, on vacation, etc. One shows a young woman riding in a buggy pulled by an ostrich.

Album with 210 Original Photographs Compiled by an American Oil Exploration Engineer Showing the Indigenous People of Carrasquero, Venezuela and the Nearby Engineers' camp and Oil Wells, also the Towns of Macuto and La Guaira, Venezuela, Curacao and its Royal Dutch Shell Refinery and Puerto Rico].

1920 - Ca. 1920. Quarto (26,5x21 cm). 48 leaves (black card stock). With 210 original photographs ranging in size from 8x11,5 cm (3 ½ x 4 ½ in.) to 7,5x9,5 cm (3x4 in). All mounted with corners, many with pencil captions on verso. Period black patterned half cloth with patterned paper boards "Ardak Album." A few album leaves with minor chips, covers of album with mild rubbing, but overall a very good album with sharp images. This is an historically interesting photo album documents the early exploration and development of the oil industry in Venezuela, which today is the country with the largest proven oil reserves in the world. "Despite the knowledge of the existence of oil reserves in Venezuela for centuries, the first oil wells of significance were not drilled until the early 1910s., On 15 April 1914, upon the completion of the Zumaque-I (now called MG-I) oil well, the first Venezuelan oilfield of importance, Mene Grande, was discovered by Caribbean Petroleum (later acquired by Royal Dutch Shell)in the Maracaibo Basin. This major discovery encouraged a massive wave of foreign oil companies to "invade" Venezuela in an attempt to get a piece of the action"(Wikipedia). The strong images in this album include: about forty images of Venezuelan indigenous peoples; about sixty images of the engineers getting to and setting up camp at Carrasquero (Maracaibo Basin), Venezuela; about ten images of the nearby oil wells; about forty images of Curacao and its Royal Dutch Shell refinery; about thirty images of Macuto and La Guaira, Venezuala; about twenty-five images of Puerto Rico.
