        "To Hold as 'Twere"

      Dundalk: Tempest Dundagan Press, 1920. Wraps. Good. 4to. 26 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated, 20 leaves, with 17 being caricature plates, plus title with vignettes. Grace Plunkett, nee Gifford, was a well-known artist and caricaturist who married Joseph Plunkett, martyr of the Easter 1916 Uprising, hours before his execution. This 1920 collection includes a good number of caricatures of the Irish rebels and other notables, including de Valera, Lady Gregory, John MacCormick, Countess Markievicz, etc. The caricatures are sharp and merciless, and Plunkett was a rarity as a woman in the field of caricature at the time. Her sympathies were strongly for Sinn Fein and Irish independence, needless to say. The collection is uncommon in commerce. Heavy soiling of the cover. Moderate wear besides.

        Albert Einstein Signed Etching.

      1920. Etch bust of Albert Einstein done by well-known artist Hermann Struck. Signed by both Struck numbered 59/100 and also signed by Einstein on the lower right side. In near fine condition with light toning to the extremities. Measures 8.5 inches by 10.5 inches. Hermann Struck was a German Jewish artist known for his etchings. In 1908, Struck published "Die Kunst des Radierens" ("The Art of Etching"), which became a seminal work on the subject. His students included Marc Chagall, Lovis Corinth, Jacob Steinhardt, Lesser Ury and Max Liebermann. Struck did commissioned portraits of Albert Einstein, Ibsen, Nietzsche, Freud, Herzl, Oscar Wilde among others.

        Dessins originaux signés : opération de césarienne

      - 8 dessins [175 x 145 mm] sur France (Paris ), c. 1920, , 8 dessins [175 x 145 mm] sur 4 planches [250 x 370 mm]. Numérotés 1 à 10 (sans la planche qui contenait les dessins 3 et 4), fusain, encre noire et gouache blanche sur papier calque, Très bel ensemble provenant de la Clinique d'accouchements de la rue d'Assas (Clinique Tarnier). Les dessins, d'une remarquable exécution, décrivent les étapes d'une opération de césarienne extra-péritonéale depuis l'ouverture par incision transversale basse de la paroi abdominale jusqu'à la fermeture de l'utérus et la pose d'un drain composé de mèches. Ils sont signés "H. Frantz" : cet artiste fut un familier du monde médical et hospitalier ; dessinateur anatomique et chirurgical, il fournit plusieurs dessins pour la section anatomo-clinique du musée du Service de santé des armées, installé au Val-de-Grâce à Paris pendant la guerre 1914-1918. On le connait également au travers de ses caricatures de médecins et de chirurgiens, publiées dans la revue Chanteclair dans les années 1910-1920 : parmi les personnalités qu'il a portraituré avec malice, on rencontre les obstétriciens Paul Bar et Julien Potocki tous deux internes de Tarnier et accoucheurs de "l'école de la Maternité" des hôpitaux de Paris. La césarienne décrite ici était réalisée en cas d'infection du péritoine, pouvant notamment être causée par la macération du foetus mort, sans extériorisation de l'utérus : le geste consiste à isoler la cavité extra-péritonéale pour éviter la contamination, le péritoine étant décollé et séparé de la paroi utérine par le chirurgien, puis suturé au moyen d'aiguilles de reverdin, avant le procéder à l'incision de la partie inférieure de l'utérus (dessins n° 5 et 6). Le geste final (n° 9) est ici de réaliser une double suture de l'utérus en refermant l'incision dans un premier temps, puis en refermant l'ensemble en étirant, de chaque côté de la première couture, deux bourrelets d'utérus afin de réaliser une suture étanche. Le dessin n° 10 décrit la pose d'un drain, du type Mikulicz. Ce type de césarienne, qui oblige à revenir à l'incision transversale basse, fut étudié à Cologne par le docteur Fritz Frank en 1906 et 1907. Jusque dans les années 1920, en France, les accoucheurs sont restés sceptiques quant à la technique de la segmentaire basse sans extériorisation de l'utérus.         Canadian Victoria Cross Recipients [Pre-1920]

      8 August, 1920, 1920. Blank-page autograph book. 11.5 cm x 9 cm, black fabricoid binding with the word "Autographs" gilt-stamped to cover, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Written on front free endpaper: "Canadian Victoria Cross [Winners?]. Canadian National Exhibition. Toronto. 28/8/1920." The Victoria Cross is the highest honour in the Canadian honour system, for gallantry in the face of the enemy, that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. It even takes precedence over the Order of Canada. The Canadian National Exhibition celebrated Canada's wartime achievement bringing together 26 winners of the Victoria Cross and their families. Organized in cooperation with the Veterans Re-Union Council, large numbers of veterans attended the gathering of VC winners. In his opening day address, Sir Auckland Geddes noted the "imperishable glory of the Canadian Corps." There are 17 recipient autographs and 11 signatures of "next of kin" recipients. Some name their regiment, home town, and rank. Published by the Jewish National Council of Lithuania, this scarce work compiles materials relating to the Lithuanian Jewish autonomy granted in 1920 by the Ministry for Jewish Affairs of the Lithuanian government. Lithuanian Jews took active part in the Lithuanian Wars of Independence, also known as the Freedom Struggles, referring to the three wars that Lithuania fought to defend its independence at the end of World War I: with Bolshevik forces (December 1918 - August 1919), the Bermontians* (June - December 1919), and Poland (August - November 1920). Altogether more than 3000 Jews served in the Lithuanian army between 1918 and 1920. As a result, the Jewish community was given a wide amount of autonomy in education and taxation through community councils, or kehillot. Unfortunately, by 1934, in a nationalist trend that reflected throughout Europe, the government scaled back much of this autonomy, and cases of anti-semitism increased. Wrappers sunned and partly chipped along back cover. Text in Lithuanian. Nachdem er kurze Zeit als Soldat am Ersten Weltkrieg teilgenommen hatte, wurde er wegen Krankheit entlassen. Ab 1917 lebte Matthießen als freier Schriftsteller in München. Auf Anregung des Verlegers Hans von Weber veröffentlichte er fantastische, von der deutschen Romantik beeinflusste Romane, Erzählungen und Märchen für Kinder. Daneben fungierte er als Herausgeber einiger Bände der Paracelsus-Gesamtausgabe; in den Jahren 1920 und 1921 gehörte er der Redaktion der katholischen Kulturzeitschrift "Hochland" an.1924 kehrte Wilhelm Matthießen ins Rheinland zurück und lebte in den folgenden Jahren mit seiner Familie in einem ehemaligen Jagdhaus im Kottenforst bei Bonn. In den Verlagen Herder und Schaffstein erschienen bis 1945 zahlreiche weitere Bände mit Märchen und exotischen Abenteuererzählungen nach dem Vorbild des von Matthießen geschätzten Karl May. Matthießens erfolgreichstes Werk war der 1932 erschienene Schul- und Detektivroman "Das rote U".veröffentlichte er ab 1949 wieder - dezidiert unpolitische - Kinder- und Jugendbücher.         Post-World War I Air Mail Plane Factory Photograph Album

      1920. Photograph Album. Very Good. Circa 1920. The album measures 12" x 7" and contains 34 pages with 113 photographs and one obituary clipping. The photographs vary in size from approximately 2.5" x 4" to 3.5" x 5.5". A few of the photos have some small waterspots. The album's cover is missing and it has been rebound with a leather thong. The pages are worn and beginning to split from the binding. Thirty of the photos are aircraft related, and the remainder are of people, buildings and outings. The aircraft photos are of what appears to be an aircraft factory or factories engaged in building mail planes or converting military aircraft into mail planes. It is likely the images are from either the Glenn L. Martin Company of Cleveland, Ohio or the Standard Aircraft Company of Patterson, New Jersey, or both. The photographs include a number of snapshots showing work in progress inside as well as aircraft including a Handley Page bomber with London markings, what appear to be military Curtis Jennies, a JR-1B mail airplanes, a Martin Bombers, and a Martin Mail Plane. There are additional images of a biplane with German military markings and a team of factory workers standing in front of a biplane with an enclosed cockpit. There are several photos of a mail plane crash; the aircraft number is only partially visible ("U. S. Mail - 2?4"). The obituary references Arthur J. Smith of Cleveland, and some of the planes display the distinctive Martin circled-star logos suggesting the photographs are from the Martin factory in Cleveland, However one of the images appears to be of the JR-1B aircraft by Standard and there are several photos of a Handley Page bomber apparently being reconfigured into a mail plane, a conversion that was only carried out at the Standard plant in Patterson. Overall, this is an intriguing and unique pictorial record of early mail plane construction that is worthy of further research.

Louis Faugeres Bishop (1864- 1941) of New York was the first physician to limit his practice to cardiovascular medicine and call himself a cardiologist at a time when heart disease was not considered a specialty in the United States. He was the first heart specialist to be appointed as the ‘Clinical Professor of the Diseases of the Heart and Circulation’ at the Fordham University School of Medicine in 1907. Bishop spent time in 1908 and 1910 at the Bad Nauheim in Germany, a world centre for treatment of heart disease at that time. He was also the first to use the sphygmomanometer and study the adverse effects of high blood pressure in the human body and later in 1921 published on arteriosclerosis. As early as 1915, Bishop has adopted fluoroscopy and electrocardiography in his practice in cardiology at New York. In 1922 he was one of the 50 physicians at the organizational meeting of the American Heart Association. He and his colleagues founded the James Mackenzie Cardiological Society in 1926. His son Bishop (1901-1986) later served as President of the American College of Cardiologists and the New York Cardiological Society and published The Birth of a Specialty: The Diary of an American Cardiologist, 1926-1972 (New York: Vantage, 1977).         Peter written by F.B Meyer with ALS by F.B. Meyer

      Hardcover. Good. Fine F.B. Meyer letter. three page 1920 ALS entirely in Meyer's hand written to Lady Kinnaird. Lord and Lady Kinnaird were close, personal friends of Meyer's. Living in Scotland, he would often travel and stay at their estate while writing, even the preface of his Life and the Way Through It being dedicated to them. Lady Kinnaird was an ardent Christian philanthropist and founded the YWCA. In the letter, Lord Kinnaird seems to have lost his vision. Meyer writes very personally and closes with a hymn which he urges Lady Kinnaird to read to her husband on Meyer's behalf. The whole is tipped in to the ffep of a copy of Peter by Meyer, which is also inscribed to Lady Kinnaird by Meyer.

"This edition is limited to 1,000 copies and cannot be reprinted, as the stones from which the offset plates were printed were in Belgium at the time of the German invasion, and were destroyed." With Alastair's fine illustrations consisting of twelve plates, one as frontispiece, 10 with captioned tissue-guards and the twelfth being the rear endpaper, and with thirteen very large decorated opening initials, all printed in black and turquoise. Ten plates printed in black and turquoise, with descriptive tissue guards, plus two additional plates on the front and rear endpapers. Thirteen large decorative initials (including repeats) printed in black and turquoise. Title printed in black and turquoise. 4to, presented in the publisher's beautiful original binding of white polished buckram lavishly decorated on the upper cover with an all-over pictorial design by Alastair in gilt beneath a turquoise crescent moon, the spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g., others untrimmed. 36pp. A especially fine copy, unusually so,internally pristine and perfect, the brilliant binding exceptionally well preserved and truly bright and clean, especially so for this beautiful book bound in white, which is usually found mellowed down or browned. LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF THE SPHINX WITH THE ILLUSTRATIONS BY ALASTAIR, the pseudonym for German artist Baron Hans Henning von Voigt. 'Alastair's style has been called "decadent Baroque", and has the look of Art Deco influenced hugely by the work of the English artist Aubrey Beardsley, who also illustrated works by Oscar Wilde, and would be echoed in the deliciously unhinged work of Harry Clarke. His career as an artist was launched in 1914, when John Lane published Forty-Three Drawings by Alastair. This much awaited edition of Wilde's THE SPHINX spread his fame even further. Intricate decorative elements and fine detail are apparent in his works. Wilde's poem was the perfect fodder for Alastair's imagination. Jerome Buckley has written “It remains a prime example of many aspects of the English literary Decadence, an extravagant example in both style and subject matter of the ornate become outré, the esoteric entering the forbidden, the luxurious growing lascivious.” In 1922 the artist would once again be inspired by both Wilde and Beardsley for his illustrations to the play SALOME.

        Women In Love

      Privately Printed, New York [but London, Martin Secker] 1920 - First edition, UK issue being one of 50 numbered copies signed by the author. Martin Secker bought 50 sets of sheets from the unsigned American edition, and bound them very much in the Secker style, though the publisher's name does not appear anywhere in the book. The regular trade edition did not appear in England for another two years. Roberts A15b Bound in the publisher¿s brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Top edge of pages stained dark green. Housed in a well fitting 1/2 Brown Morocco Clamshell Box with full gilt spine. This book was at some point an ex-library copy in the least intrusive manner, thus few would consider that status much of a demerit. The spine has the faintest trace that there once was a number. On the title page there is in the center faint remains of a library number of which appears to have been partially removed but still showing some signs of its existence; this is quite inconspicuous. And finally cloth repairs have professionally been made to the spine and lower corner of the rear board, that can easily escape one's notice. From the beauty and rarity of this book.         [Photo Album]: Snapshots of African Natives with an Emphasis on Bare-breasted Women

      Oblong octavo. String-tied stiff green boards with embossed "Photographs" on front board with blank black pages. The first half of the album has 52 mounted snapshot photographs. All are black and white and are approximately 3.5" x 2.5". Uncaptioned and undated, perhaps circa 1920. All but one of the images seem to be unique snapshots; one image may be commercial. Slight wear, near fine. The photos display scarification, chin and lip piercing. We can not confidently identify the tribe or tribes represented, but some of the images of body modification seem to conform closely to some of the decorative elements of the Karo tribe of Southern Ethiopia. The photographer/compiler, presumably a tourist, seemed most intent on preserving images of bare-breasted native women. .
