        Egypte. Catalogue de Photos Stereoscopiques

      - An exceptionally beautiful and well-done illustrated manuscript of travel in Egypt. N.d., circa 1920. Oblong, 8 by 6 inches, 21 by 15 cm. Unpaginated, with 61 leaves of card, text and illustrations only on the recto sides, and with majority of pages having some kind of illustration. With original watercolor illustrations of sights and attractions of Egypt, and headings are rendered with a lovely calligraphic hand. Occasionally the author produces Arabic calligraphy and ornament, also exquisitely executed. Some illustrations are mounted, while most are done directly onto the leaves. All are crisply precise and lovely; they include panoramas, night scenes, temples and mosques, statuary, the people -- vendors, bedouins, etc. Perhaps the subjects are not unfamiliar -- these are the things recorded by photographers and travelers from the nineteenth century to the present -- but the quality is high, and they have a cumulative effect in this home-made book. The creator of this album lavished care on all aspects of its production, and this extends to the slipcase and front board, in which the title and a simple decorative symbol is rendered with gold-colored leather pastedowns. While the use of binder rings to hold the album together might seem crude, it is complemented with a rounded piece of rusticated chrome metal that makes the end product both striking and somehow fitting of the topical matter contained within. VI) von anderen Autoren fortsetzen u. die bereits vorh. Bände in 2. Aufl. überarbeiten. Brandler-Pracht gab dann um 1918 sein grosses 6-bändiges Basislehrwerk "Astrologische Kollektion zum Selbststudium" heraus. Zu seinen Schülern zählten u.a. Wilhelm Knappich, Alfred Witte, Arthur Grobe-Wutischky, Elsbeth Ebertin, Bert van Solden, Erich Wiesel.         Constitution and By-Laws of Philadelphia Base Ball Association

      Philadelphia: Philadelphia Base Ball Association, 1920. Near Fine. First edition. 16mo. 16pp. Stapled printed green card wrappers. Small stains on the wrappers and a bit of age-toning, else near fine. An interesting artifact. Among the officers listed is Edward Bolden, a Philadelphia postal employee who was later to play an important role in Negro baseball. In this early instance he was on the board of a league of amateur baseball clubs in the Philadelphia area, probably representing the Hilldale team which he helped to found in 1910, and which played other local teams (of both races). The by-laws note that there are separate white and "Colored" divisions in the league, and that the winners in each category would meet in a championship series. Little more can easily be found about this league. We did find one 1923 article in the "Afro-American" newspaper recounting a game in which Hilldale overwhelmed the white all-star team of the league by a score of 9-1.Bolden was later the founding president of the Eastern Colored League in 1923, and in 1924, along with Andrew 'Rube' Foster, he helped organize the Negro World Series, a post-season championship between teams from the Negro National League and the Eastern Colored League. From about 1915 to 1933, Bolden managed the Hilldale Ball Club. He later founded the Philadelphia Stars which won the 1934 Negro National League Championship. Rare. OCLC locates no copies.

        Michael Robartes and the Dancer.

Covers lightly marked, front free endpaper slightly creased. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. One of 400 copies printed. Michael Robartes was a mysterious character, the leader of the fictional Order of the Alchemical Rose, first created by Yeats for his short story "Rosa Alchemica" in The Secret Rose (1898). In this collection Yeats posited Robartes as his real source for the mystical wisdom of an obscure Arab sect called the Judwalis, which Yeats then claimed to be channelling in his poetry. The work is an attractive and important volume, and an early example of Yeats's mysticism entering into his verse. This collection contains the poems (notable for their mythical imagining of contemporary politics) "Easter, 1916" and perhaps Yeats's most famous poem, "The Second Coming".

      Panama Canal Zone and Chile, 1920. Near Fine. Folio. Measuring 12" x 14". Brown leather album with gilt and blind stamped decorations. Contains 274 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 5", with a few scattered captions. Album has a cracked front hinge, rubbing on the leather, and waviness thus good only with near fine photographs.A photo album kept during a cruise through the Panama Canal and down the coast of South America to Chile around 1920. The album begins with a trip through the Panama Canal which had officially opened in 1914. Photos of the deforested banks of the area, a few inland scenes, and nearby towns are seen in the section which shows travel through the canal. The mechanism of the canal can also be seen in amateur snapshots taken while the ship passed through. The trip continues down the coast of South America. Penciled captions appear on a few occasions identifying the cities of Pisco, Peru; Antofagasta, Chile; and Tocopilla, Chile. The photos from the various ports and cities visited show the local people of the town, with an emphasis on children, as well as the towns themselves. Here the people of South America are seen on horseback herding animals and shopping at the town markets. One photo shows a man on a dirt road, on the back of a donkey going into town. The changing infrastructure of the area can also be seen with photos of recently added railway stations and cars juxtaposed next to villagers who continued to use the traditional methods of transportation, such as the aforementioned donkey. The South American coast is seen here both from the boat and on foot. The compiler ventured outside of town to document the natural beauty of the countryside including a hike into the Andes and fishing expeditions. Many of the photos show the onboard life of the travelers fraternizing with crew members between stops, as well as photos of them sunning on the decks, ship's rigging, and passengers they befriended along the way.An extensive collection of photographs depicting South American travel and relatively early documentation of the Panama Canal.

Lavishly illustrated throughout with 54 in-text photogravures, architectural drawings and floor plans, Alexander Levy's "Building and Housing in New Palestine" is the most comprehensive architectural study on inexpensive and rapid building construction in the early days of the Zionist movement. The author meticulously and methodologically reviews the most advanced European theories and studies relevant to the topic and concludes with concrete and realistic recommendations for implementation. The plan covers such topics as the role of the company in initiating and executing building construction, the crucial availability of materials, the presentation of different types of accommodations, and the utilization and standardization of materials and labor techniques.Laid in, 13 typed leaves bearing the heading of the "Bureau de Correspondance Juive Zurich" with the draft of an article titled "Normalisierung und Typisierung - welche Masse? (Grundsätzlicher Vorschlag an die Palästina-Baugesellschaft.)" by Norbert Weldler (1884-1961), the publisher of the "Zürcher Bücherblattes" and head of a Swiss Zionist association. Each leaf has been annotated and/or underlined by Weldler himself.Moderate creasing along spine. Tail of spine and fore-edge of front cover slightly and partly water-stained. Lower corner of pp. 31-56 water-stained (not affecting lettering). Text in German. Wrappers in overall good, interior in good to very good condition. About the author: Architect Alexander Levy (1883-1942) expressed interest in Zionism after finishing his studies in architecture and starting work for a building company in Berlin in 1907. A year later, he offered his services as an architect to Arthur Ruppin (1876-1943), then the director of the Palestine Office of the Zionist Organization in Jaffa. In the Spring of 1919, with the support of the Association of Jewish Architects and Engineers, Levy founded a new organization, the Association of the Builders of the Land of Israel. The goal of the association was to resolve the problems of building and housing in Palestine accompanying the anticipated mass immigration of Jews to the Land of Israel. In May of the same year, the association organized a conference on future building in Palestine, including an exhibition of plans and models of housing solutions. The ideas introduced in the exhibition were published with plans and photos by Alexander Levy in Davis Trietsch's magazine "Volk und Land." Levy's essay in this magazine, titled "Vom Bauen und Wohnen im neuen Palaestina" (Building and Housing in New Palestine) spread over four issues between September and November 1919. Most of the text and portion of the illustrations of the future Levy's book were already published in Trietsch's "Volk und Land." Due to financial problems, Alexander Levy moved back to Berlin in 1927. He left Germany in 1933 after Hitler's rise to power, but was arrested in occupied France in 1942, and deported to Auschwitz were he was murdered soon after his arrival.

Unter dem Titel Erotische Grotesken erschien um 1920 ein Mappenwerk mit 12 kolorierten Radierungen, signiert 'Pipifax'. 4 der Radierungen liegen hier vor als fotografierte Zeichnungen mit kleinen Varianten, 1 weitere Radierung weist eine grössere Variante zu der fotografischen Fassung auf. (In der Mappe betitelt mit 'Wiederbelebungsvariante' und 'Der Damenschneider'). Die anderen 4 Blätter sind eindeutig im Stil der Mappe gezeichnet, sind jedoch vollkommen eigenständige Motive. Sie scheinen Vorstudien gewesen zu sein, die dann nicht in das Mappenwerk aufgenommen wurden. Jedes Blatt in der Abbildung mit 'H. L.' signiert. Die Vermutung, dass Pipifax eigentlich ein Pseudonym von Max Liebermann ist, dürte damit widerlegt sein. Einige der Abzüge mit kleinen Randläsuren und schwachen Feuchtigkeitsspuren des Aquarells.         [Photo Album]: Oklahoma A & M College Scrapbook and Photo Album

      Oklahoma, 1920. Very Good. String-tied oblong quarto cloth album measuring 13" x 10" and decorated with the seal of Oklahoma A&M College stamped on the front board. A collection of 280 sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 3" x 5", some with captions, and related ephemera. A very good photo album with rubbing and edgewear containing near fine photographs. A scrapbook and photo album kept by sorority girl Kathryn Bellamy while she attended Oklahoma A&M College during the 1920s. The beginning of the album is a scrapbook complete with invitations to parties and graduation ceremonies, programs from college performances, newspaper clippings, and student membership cards to various organizations including the Business and Professional Women's Club, ballet classes, and Kappa Phi Beta. The "Rushing Rules," which are included here in a tipped in pamphlet, include "there shall be no men guests of the fraternity and no rushee shall be allowed to have a date with a man during rushing season" and a fine of at least $25 for breaking rules. Bellamy was also a part of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, her membership cards can be seen here dated July 1923. The latter half of the album contains photos from school, of the buildings and activities, as well as photos around Oklahoma, including hiking and camping trips, and two photos show an A&M baseball player posing in a field. Bellamy captured her school and home life with candid snapshots of friends and fellow sorority sisters. An extensive look at a young woman's college life.

      A complete run of 534 issues in 25 volumes of the second series of the German-language dime novels about the character Percy Stuart, an English Lord who wants to become a member of the Excentric Club in London and must complete 197 tasks (one for each member of the club) to gain admittance, each issue with a colorful illustration to the cover. 16mo. Cloth-backed boards with hand-illustrated labels mounted to covers and hand-written titles to spines, orig. pictorial wrpps. bound in. Some slight rubbing. Dresden (Mignon) 1920-1927. The first series appeared from 1913 to 1916 under the title "Lord Percy vom Excentric Club", and changed Percy to an American millionaire after the UK became an opponent to Germany during World War I. In 1916, when the United States became more allied with the UK, the German military authority banned publication of the series. The Augsburger Tag publishing house tried to revitalize the series in 1950, but it ceased publication after only one volume was printed. From 1969 to 1979, a series loosely based on the novels, called "Percy Stuart", ran on German TV for 52 episodes. As of December 2017, WorldCat does not locate any holdings of this series in North America.

      Panama Canal Zone and Chile, 1920. Near Fine. Folio. Measuring 12" x 14". Brown leather album with gilt and blind stamped decorations. Contains 274 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 5", with a few scattered captions. Album has a cracked front hinge, rubbing on the leather, and waviness thus good only with near fine photographs.A photo album kept during a cruise through the Panama Canal and down the coast of South America to Chile around 1920. The album begins with a trip through the Panama Canal which had officially opened in 1914. Photos of the deforested banks of the area, a few inland scenes, and nearby towns are seen in the section which shows travel through the canal. The mechanism of the canal can also be seen in amateur snapshots taken while the ship passed through. The trip continues down the coast of South America. Penciled captions appear on a few occasions identifying the cities of Pisco, Peru; Antofagasta, Chile; and Tocopilla, Chile. The photos from the various ports and cities visited show the local people of the town, with an emphasis on children, as well as the towns themselves. Here the people of South America are seen on horseback herding animals and shopping at the town markets. One photo shows a man on a dirt road, on the back of a donkey going into town. The changing infrastructure of the area can also be seen with photos of recently added railway stations and cars juxtaposed next to villagers who continued to use the traditional methods of transportation, such as the aforementioned donkey. The South American coast is seen here both from the boat and on foot. The compiler ventured outside of town to document the natural beauty of the countryside including a hike into the Andes and fishing expeditions. Many of the photos show the onboard life of the travelers fraternizing with crew members between stops, as well as photos of them sunning on the decks, ship's rigging, and passengers they befriended along the way.An extensive collection of photographs depicting South American travel and relatively early documentation of the Panama Canal.

Mainly in the original decorated boards but 5 are in the original decorated wrappers. On the whole the condition is pretty good with some wear to a very few of the spines.       New York: Doran, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. 1st American edition of her second book, mining Shakespeare's As You Like It. Near fine (edges slightly faded), in a very good jacket, faint shadow of a number on the spine, edgetears and corner chips, but no repair, and for this jacket, more pleasing than doing good in secret and being found out by accident. In answer to Albee's question, I'm afraid of Virginia Woolf. There's not enough space here, and I'm not smart enough, nor enough of a researcher to tell you much about her you don't already know, but I'll take my shot at stepping into the shoes of a great lady, and externally considering her for a paragraph attentive to outside events that invaded her inner peace and twisted her life, all because no one ever told her that detachment is the sure, and only, road to serenity She was entitled. Her mother was a Pre-Raphaelite model so she got her babeness by gene. Her father was a Sir of letters with a gigantic personal library, and as a result her home-schooled education was an erudite exhibition of late Victorian society (the way of the mouse, symbolic of industry in quiet places). At 13 her mother died and she crumpled into a (her first) nervous breakdown. She was 18 when the 20th century arrived, so she regrouped, laced her shoes tight and, like most of her generation, met it teeming with hope. But in the background, fate was already icing the stairs, and during the 20th century's first decade the dull were full of themselves, and the bright were full of doubt, so the wealth of the empires (amassed over 5 centuries) was trashed in the woodchipper of W. W. I. Virginia reeled, but she knew that a part of every process is only discipline, so she buffed-up with the competence of stout feminist instincts, and the resolve of The Little Engine That Could, became an exalted author and publisher, surrounded herself with a circle of brilliance, and pursued ideas for their own sake. Then the depression flipped her out, and W. W. II shook the ground beneath her feet (and a German bomb flattened her house), and the pressure inside her spirit began to build (you can hide the fire but you can't hide the smoke), and like the pressure in the atmosphere, she didn't sense it, but it was still there, at 15 pounds per square inch, and mistaking feeling for thinking (the undiagnosed bipolar), she guessed that 59 was old enough, and that coping might be the mesh through which real life escapes, so she spit the bit, channeled her inner Billy Joe McAllister, donned an overcoat, filled the pockets with stones, walked into the River Ouse, and never came back.

        Irish Fairy Tales : Illustrated By Arthur Rackham

      The First UK Trade Printing published by Macmillan & Co. (London) in 1920. The Book is in near Fine condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. Slight dulling of the gilt to the spine. Light offsetting to the end papers. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The fragile paper WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ or better condition. Some edge wear with nicks and a little creasing in places. Closed tears to the rear lower spine fold, rear flap fold and to the rear upper edge. Some tape reinforcement to the front flap fold and upper spine to the verso supporting closed tears. A little light creasing to the front panel. The wrapper presents very well and the Celtic design looks very striking in the removable brodart archival cover. Sixteen tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue guards and text illustrations in black and white by Arthur Rackham. In this book, Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. He had been persuaded to tackle Stephens's stories by Walter Starkie, who had vowed to give his uncle 'no peace' until he had agreed to illustrate them. In writing the stories, Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights, his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition and in Gaelic texts, but which had not appeared accessibly in print. Rackham rose to the occasion, and his nephew's haunting of him was justified. The Dublin Independent was particularly warm in welcoming the collection, remarking: 'We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarised us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham's pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming." Attractively printed and bound by Riviere with five tissue-guarded colour plate illustrations by Charles Brock. Half bright red calf over buckram sides, tooled in gilt to spines, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. Edges of text block toned, leather in good condition, pleasingly aged to spines with no chips or cracks. A very good set indeed.
