Dame mit Kind im Tiergarten.

      - Radierung, 1920, auf Bütten, signiert und nummeriert. 11:14,8 cm. Literatur: Rosenbach 63. Nr. 100 von 100 Exx. – Sehr guter Abdruck, vollrandig. Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) holte Ury an dieBerliner Secession.

China 1920 Shanghai Chinese lacquer post card album hand painted covers & pages

1920 - Oblong Chinese post card album Originally purchased Shanghai, China, 1920, so likely made slightly before / around that date. (original owner noted date inside base of front cover- see pic) Covers are lacquered wooden boards hand painted in colors, the faces & hands of the figures raised in relief and intricately carved (incised) and also painted as well. Appears to be a peaceful relaxing fishing idle time in a small row boat, standing oarsman, woman with fishing rod, landscape scene with volcanic mountain in distance. Every page is made from wood and outlined in patterned fabric. Hand painted silk paintings cover every board surface, hand treaded fine string in all corners for loosely inserting post cards. Contains 9 double sided boards, each holding 4 cards, and two boards being front & rear covers, each with silk painting on inside and lacquered boards on outside (so album holds 72 cards total). Front cover displays scene, rear board is blank. Some board pages are of course now detached, since the weight of the boards over time would certainly be too much for the weak the simple black cloth binding style originally used. Nice looking antique book but one which was issued with a fragile binding and which has suffered some effects of time. Shows clear signs of usage and age, some small edge & corner chipping, small nicks or stain spots in a few scattered places, womans face soiled (likely removable), but as the pictures show, still a noble and handsome looking old book. Period oblong binding, spine gilt ruled & lettered, compartment devices. One of the primary virtues of this early 20th century Chinese book is that it's unique. A one of a kind object, this is the only example which survives today which looks like this, exhibiting this particular patina of time. The book casts off a visual aura utterly unlike books made today and no other example of it which survives today looks like this one. In more than acceptable antique condition. Not perfect, please review the pictures carefully as they capture the essence of how the set survives. We enjoy old objects like these with gentle age flaws. They display character and slight wear to an old object gives it a modern appeal which we believe exceeds the same item in untouched almost perfect condition. Measures c. 10 7/8" H x 14" W x 2 3/8" thick [A6632] A picture is worth a thousand words. Please examine pictures closely, as what you see pictured is what we will send you. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Fifteen Drawings.

London: The Ovid Press, [1920] - 15 unnumbered plates printed in various colours and mounted on grey, textured card. Contained within a vellum-imitation board portfolio, titles in black and with a Lewis design pasted to the front cover, publisher's device designed by Edward Wadsworth to rear cover in black. Portfolio tanned and rubbed along extremities, slight loss to fore wing flap and bottom of spine panel, a couple of small closed tears to top and bottom wing folds. Occasional light spots to plates. In excellent condition. Sole edition, number 16 of 250 numbered copies. Rodker's Ovid Press was an interesting, if short-lived, affair which, despite only lasting between 1919-21, produced a number of important and deeply influential publications: the present title, Pound's Mauberley, and Eliot's Ara Vos Prec. Fifteen Drawings is the second of Lewis' three non-literary publication, preceded by Timon of Athens (1913) and followed by Thirty Personalities and a Self-Portrait (1932); it is the scarcest of his portfolios to find complete. Apart from titles, the plates are unaccompanied by text and have no apparent thematic unity, covering a variety of subject matter and ranging in date from 1913 to 1919. The titles are: Blue Nudes, Post-Jazz, Reading Room British Museum, Timon of Athens I, Timon of Athens II, Group, Pole-Jump, Ezra Pound Esq., Head I, Head II, Nude I, Nude II, Nude III, Nude IV, and Seraglio. The Kingdom of the Pearl.

New York: Brentano's, (1920). Quarto. 151pp. One of 100 copies, signed by the illustrator, Edmund Dulac. With ten mounted color plates by Dulac. Rosenthal, a Parisian jeweler, commissioned Dulac to illustrate his work on the history and intrigue of the pearl. Drawing his inspiration from the Middle and Far East, these ten exquisitely colored illustrations are among the finest of Dulac's book illustrations. They are also among the last he would produce, as enthusiasm for deluxe illustrated editions waned in the years immediately following World War I. Along with the Arabian Nights, this is one of the scarcer books in Dulac's oeuvre. In the publisher's binding of vellum-backed gilt-decorated boards. Extremities show slight toning, else a fine, bright copy.

??????????????????? [ Nij?man bun ichi Ranry? Boruneo (Tarakan fukin) ] 1: 200,000 Scale Maps of Dutch Borneo (Tarakan and its Vicinity), Nos.1 to 24...

Sanb? Honbu Rikuchi Sokury?-bu ????????? [Land Survey Department, Army General Staff Headquarters]. Complete set of 24 folded sheets showing Tarakan Island and its vicinity in great detail. Scale 1: 200,000. Each map measures approximately 58 x 46cm, includes a key featuring important resources and geographical points of interest. Two sheets a little stained, one sheet damp affected at edges with some very minor loss on the left hand margin in one area, some occasional browning and spotting but overall very good. Pencilled annotations on reverse in Japanese. These maps which show the map data in Dutch and the legend in Japanese were based on Dutch maps made between 1920 and 1936. Each shows the character ? or secret in the upper right corner.Prior to World War II the island of Tarakan off the coast of Borneo had been an important to the Dutch as an oil production centre. After the taking of the island by the Japanese the sabotage done to the oil refinery was quickly repaired and the island also became important to the Japanese. By 1945 the tide of the war had turned and the island became well known as the first stage of the Allied campaign to take Borneo back from the Japanese. Australian troops landed on Tarakan on May 1st, 1945 anticipating a short battle however it wasn't until June 21st that the Australian, United States and Dutch forces who were involved in this operation, code named "Oboe One" were victorious. Victory for the Allies on Tarakan came at the cost of a great many lives, most particularly among the Japanese forces. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 157022)....

Über eine eigenartige herdförmige Erkrankung des Zentralnervensystems.

Berlin: Springer, 1920. First edition, in the original printed wrappers, of the first description of what later became known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or CJD, following its independent identification by Alfons Jakob one year later. "Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and Alfons Jakob independently authored clinical and pathologic descriptions of a new syndrome in the 1920s. This syndrome, which subsequently came to be named after them, was characterized by dementia, motor and coordination abnormalities, a fatal course, and pathologic findings of diffuse spongiform neuronal degeneration. Although it appeared for many years to be little more than a medical curiosity, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease attained widespread attention by its pathologic similarity to kuru and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, 'mad cow disease.' Because there are sporadic, familial, and iatrogenic forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, it is considered to have both genetic and infectious aspects. Although its causation has for some time been ascribed to 'slow viruses,' the etiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is currently thought to be due to prions, small proteinaceous infectious particles that have genetic encoding. The debate regarding whether the appearance of atypical Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can be linked to the epidemic of 'mad cow disease' is currently unresolved" (Sternbach et al, p. 701). "While working at Alzheimer's neuropsychiatric clinic, 'Creutzfeldt studied the case of a 22-year old woman suffering from tremors, spasticity, and pyramidal signs. She became ataxic and demented. Her later symptoms included nystagmus, rigidity, myoclonus, and mutism; she ultimately died in status epilepticus 12 months after the onset. At Autopsy, Creutzfeldt found moderate cerebral atrophy with a patchy diffuse neuronal loss, pronounced astroglial hypertrophy, and bilateral degeneration of the corticospinal tracts. Creutzfeldt did not mention either neuronal vacuolation or a spongy state. Because of the war, publication was delayed until 1920. In 1921, Alfons Jakob (1884-1931) described three cases of 'spastic pseudosclerosis, disseminated encephalomyelopathy', and subsequently reported two other cases ['Über eigenartige Erkrankungen des Zentralnervensystems mit bemerkenswerten anatomischen Befunden,' Zeitschrift für die gesamte Neurologie und Psychiatrie 64, 147-228]. Jakob had examined Creutzfeldt's slides, and noting similarities among some of their cases, grouped them together as examples of 'spastic pseudosclerosis', a term Creutzfeldt disagreed with, believing their cases constituted a new clinical entity" (Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences, Vol. 1, p. 898). Creutzfeldt's material was lost during World War II. "Hans-Gerhard Creutzfeldt (1885-1964) was born in Harburg, Germany, and studied medicine in Jena, Rostock, and Kiel, where he received his MD in 1908. He wrote his thesis on tumors of the pituitary gland. From 1910 to 1912, he worked as a ship's doctor and then studied neuropathology with Ludwig Edinger in 1912. He spent 2 years with Alois Alzheimer in Breslau (present Wroclaw, Poland). After World War I, he worked with Walther Spielmeyer in Munich and with Ernst Siemerling in Kiel. For the next 14 years, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry of the Charité Hospital in Berlin with Karl Bonhoeffer. He returned to Kiel in 1938, was appointed director of Neuropsychiatry at the Christian-Albrechts University, and served there until 1953. He was one of the few academics who refused to join the Nazi party. He became the first postwar Rector of the University (1945-46). He ended his academic career at the Psychiatric Institute of Munich in 1955. He died after a long illness in 1964" (ibid.). Garrison-Morton 4719.1. Sternbach, Dibble & Varon, 'From Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease to the mad cow epidemic,' Journal of Emergency Medicine 15 (1997), 701-5. Large 8vo (244 x 163 mm), pp. 1-18 in Zeitschrift für die gesamte Neurologie und Psychiatrie, 57 Band, entire issue offered here; pp. [vi], 358, [iv]. Original printed wrappers, unopened. Das Verborgene Deutschland.

Offenbach a.M. Klingspor, 1920. Small quarto. (5) ff. With hand-drawn and hand-colored initial and decorations by Rudolf Koch, the famed type designer and calligrapher at the Klingspor type foundry in Germany. This copy apparently was a proof copy, as it contains handwritten notes on changes to be made to the opening initial as well as the terminal paragraph decoration on the facing page. The author, Paul de Lagarde, was a renowned nineteenth century Bible scholar and orientalist as well as a virulent anti-semite and nationalist whose writings are thought to have influenced Hitler. Koch, for his part, had strong ties to Offenbach's Jewish community, and at one time produced a complete Haggadah. That the two men's work should be paired in this volume, then, is something of an historical curiosity. Slight bumping to spine at head and foot, else fine in pictorial boards.

        Cunard Line R.M.S. "Aquitania."

Cunard. No date. Ca. mid 1920s. Color foldout poster showing a cutaway section of the ship, sheet 10 x 48 1/4 inches (25.5x122.5cm), 5 folds as issued. Travel agent stamp at upper right corner of image (smudged), otherwise very good condition. Blank verso. The luxurious Cunard liner Aquitania was launched in 1913 and began sea trials the following year. The vessel completed only three round trip crossings of the Atlantic before being pressed into service as a troop ship during World War I. (On 25 June 1915 she sailed from Liverpool with over 5,000 troops on board heading for the Gallipoli conflict.) After the war Aquitania was refitted for passenger service and at the same time converted from coal to oil burning (see item 83 "Oil Bunkers" on the diagram's index) and on 17 July 1920 resumed Liverpool - New York service. (It may be that this diagrammatic poster was issued in connection with the Aquitania's resumption of passenger service.) Three classes of service are listed (1st, 2nd, 3rd), while in 1927 "Tourist" class service was sandwiched between 2nd and 3rd. Aquitania served as a troop ship during the Second World War and remained in passenger service until 1949; she was scrapped the following year in Scotland. On the poster, below the cut-away image of the ship, is a line of technical information about the vessel: "Length 901 feet - Breadth 97 feet - Depth (from Boat Deck) 921 feet - Gross Tonnage 47,000 - Speed 23 Knots - Height to Tops of Funnels 164 free - Height to Mastheads 220 feet - Accommodation for nearly 5,000." As is the case with many sought-after posters from the 20s and 30s, the Aquitania diagram was produced by means of color lithography.
