The Story of Opal The Journal of an Understanding Heart

Boston, MA: Atlantic Monthly Press. Very Good+. 1920. Limited Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; Limited to 650 copies - this is book number 521. Also included is a 1st Printing of the 1976 edition arranged and adapted by Jane Boulton. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was possibly issued without a dust jacket for this edition. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The covers have dark green paper covered boards and a paper vellum spine with a paper spine label. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. There is some beginning foxing to the endpapers. The limited edition of this book is quite scarce. The history of this book, and of the author herself is a strange one - the author was a noted amateur naturalist from a very young age and considered a child prodigy by many. This book however, is a compilation of her journals, purportedly written as a child in diaries written in phonetic spelling, which were later ripped up and reassembled. Opal believed (or conned people into believing, depending on who you believe) that she was the daughter of Henri, Prince of Orléans. This book deals both with her rather harsh upbringing and the love and interest Opal had for nature of all sorts. .

        Youth and the Bright Medusa

New York: Knopf, 1920. The rare limited issue, one of 35 unnumbered copies issued with all edges untrimmed, signed in full "Willa Sibert Cather" on the front free endpaper. Original green cloth, spine has small areas of spotting where the green pigment is lost; number in ink on upper cover; ownership signature at the bottom of the front endpaper, (James R. Messenger, Emmy Award-winning documentary film maker, and sometime contributor to the Willa Cather Newsletter). A very good copy preserved in a clamshell box. As these copies are taller than the trade issue, and special binding cases had to be made, it's unlikely they were issued in dust jacket. Youth and the Bright Medusa was the first of Cather's books to be published by Knopf, who would remain her publisher thereafter.

        Miracle Mongers and Their Methods.

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1920. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Raymond Gallatovich Best wishes and good luck Houdini Feb 5/ 1921." The recipient was a fellow illusionist and magician Raymond Gallatovich. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box and chemise. Harry Houdini was a unique figure in the history of entertainment... a hero of legend and folklore." Following the death of his mother in 1913, Houdini began to investigate spiritualism and "soon became an all-out crusader against it. Early in 1924 he began lecturing throughout the United States on fraudulent mediums. In city after city he attended seances in disguise, exposing frauds on the spot and sometimes securing their arrest, aided by his personal squad of detectives. The raids brought him huge publicity as well as a million dollars in lawsuits." At his death in 1927, "he was buried in a brass replica of the iron casket, his head pillowed on a bundle of his mother's letters to him" (ANB). The legendary magician and illusionist Harry Houdini turns a critical eye to the astonishing claims of those in his own profession in his work Miracle Mongers and Their Methods. Using personal research and observations, Houdini reveals the cunning techniques employed by fire-eaters, sword swallowers, and other masters of deception to mystify and amaze audiences around the world.

Original Art: "De Ox and De Frog"

n.p.: n.p., 1920. Stiff card. Very good. An original pen and ink sketch by Edward Winsor Kemble produced for "The Youth's Companion", an early 20th century juvenile journal. The sketch 6½ by 8½ inches and with printer's marks along the bottom. Titled in pencil: "De Ox and de Frog". On the reverse is a sticker noting that the sketch has been published by The Youth's Companion as well as a notation, "Original Art". The Tale of the Ox and the Frog appears in AEsop, also in La Fontaine and possibly in Uncle Ned's Old Tales Retold. It describes a mother frog inflating herself to the point of bursting (and in some versions beyond that point) as she imitates the size of an ox. And indeed in Kemble's sketch we se a large chested female frog standing over a mushroom table addressing two frog-children. Cropped closely on the sides just touching the image else this is in very nice condition.

        The King's Ships - K-Z.

?London: , c.1920. Quarto (276 × 179 mm) later twentieth-century brown buckram volume with bisected galley proofs mounted on 60 leaves, title gilt to the spine. First galley slightly browned and soiled, and with a few marginal splits, else very good. Proofs of the continuation of Lecky's remarkable work of compilation The King's Ships, containing outline details of over 1700 ships and their engagements. Volumes I-III, covering A-J, had been published by Horace Muirhead, 1913-4, but publication of the concluding 3 volumes was suspended due to the outbreak of the First World War, and never resumed. Naval and Maritime specialist bookseller Michael Nash was in contact with Lecky's eldest daughter Barbara in the early 1980s, and she explained that her father had been working on the continuation, but had left the manuscript on a train, and abandoned the project. She spent considerable time searching for the missing document (personal communication). The present proofs, headed sporadically "The King's Ships", and with a few minor manuscript annotations, were apparently in the reference library of the booksellers Francis Edwards until it was sold off in 1985. It is possible that Francis Edwards had intended to issue the final volumes at some point, which would explain their presence there. Lecky had a distinguished naval career between the Boer War, when he took part in the Delagoa Blockade, and the First World War, when he was responsible for the creation of the Auxiliary Patrol Service, for which he was awarded C.B., and served in the Aegean blockade of the Dardanelles and the occupation of Constantinople. In 1919 he organised the Mine Clearance Service, receiving the high appreciation of the Board of Admiralty. He retired in 1925, and died in 1940.

Gurre-Lieder von Jens Peter Jacobsen Deutsch von Robert Franz Arnold für Solli, Chor und Orchester. [Full score]

Wien Leipzig: Universal-Edition A.G. [PN U.E. 6300], 1920. First Edition. Scarce. The edition consisted of 100 copies bound in brown gilt-lettered boards, each numbered and signed by the composer; an additional number of copies were issued with light green printed wrappers. Rufer pp. 78-79. Ringer p. 311. Hilmar Schönberg Gedenkausstellung catalogue 231. First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener Konzertvereinsorches "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen's Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition... However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text... He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar's blasphemous defiance of God after Tove's death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king's restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove Music Online. The Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872-1938).. Elephant folio. Modern full dark tan buckram, publisher's light green printed wrappers bound in. 1f. (recto title, verso list of performing forces), 3-189, [i] (blank) pp. With "Gestochen und gedruckt von F.M. Geidel, Leizpig" printed to verso of final leaf. Wrappers slightly worn and soiled with two small tape repairs to outer margin of lower; small New York music seller's stamp to lower margin of title.

        Kubism [Cubism]

Kirjastus "Arlekiin", [Tartu] 1920 - Octavo (18 × 11.2 cm). Original pictorial wrappers (presumably by Ado Vabbe); 19, [1] pp. Very light trace of moisture to part of cover; small Soviet-era bookstore stamp to rear wrapper; a very good copy. First appearance in Estonian of Nikolai Kulbin's essay on Cubism (1915), translated by the Futurist writer Albert Kivikas. Kulbin sketches the development of Cubism, focusing on Cezanne, Picasso and Andre Derain, while also referring to Russian artists at the turn of the century. This translation of his essay would have been a seminal influence on the development of Estonian modernist art in the 1920s. Following Estonian independence, visual experimentation flourished, especially around the Pallas art school in Tartu, where Cubist and Suprematist elements were promoted. Kulbin (1868- 1917) was a Russian artist, art theorist and representative of Russian futurism associated with the Cubo-Futurist "Hylaea" group. With a striking linocut cover design, most likely by Ado Vabbe (1892-1961), one of the most prominent Estonian modernist artists active in Tartu. KVK, OCLC only show the copy at Columbia University. I think I've finally found one, on the rue d'Alger, at the gate of the Tuileries. This brings me closer to the theater and I am near M. Olivier, who is on the side of the Place Vendome. Maman is up to her ears in her legal proceedings. Planat/Oscar P., the friend of her younger sister Jeanne sends a letter every day with love and compliments, but not a centime. It's too much. Jeanne loves him so much that she doesn't want to ask him for money! It's a scream! I have, dear one, followed your counsel. Grandmother has left, but that's not bad, and I have shed all my tears and am now feeling well. God is sending me good things. I thinkÂ… is sending you a little something soon. This unfortunate Paul Fouché hasn't written me; but I saw him yesterday beneath my windows at 11 p.m. It's crazy! Olivier has come back and is sad not to have seen you. He sends you ten thousand good wishes. I miss you terribly, my dear Lohigi, hurry back, I beg you. Maman told me to tell you not to forget her china. Certainly don't forget that. She believes—knows—that I will forget. But that's Maman—you know the rest. I'm in a real rush because I need to write to my son. Return to me soon, dear Lohigi, I miss you terribly. I must leave you know but I embrace you with all my heart.""""Sarah Bernhardt was not simply the most famous actress the world has seen; she was among the most giftedÂ… Working within the Romantic tradition, she created exciting entertainment out of wild emotion, yet never quite lost her ability to touch the heights and depths of tragic understandingÂ… audiences found it hard to resist making connections between her roles and her lifestyle"" (ODNB).         A fantastic early A.A. Milne ALS, discussing an early children's book he authored before his success of Winnie The Pooh

Chelsea, UK, January 12, 1920. 4.5" x 5.75". "Single page ALS, signed in full signature ""A.A. Milne"" and dated ""12. 1. 20"" (January 12, 1920), 4.5"" x 5.75"" on stationary with letterhead of 11, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Kensington 2074. Expected center fold. Very soft rippling to the page. Near fine. Before Christopher Robin and Milne's children series of adventures of Winnie The Pooh, Milne dabbled with an earlier novel he in part considered as a work for children, whoever one which could also be enjoyed by adults. In his letter to Vincent Seligman, who became a life long friend spanning his adult lifetime, Milne displays his typical jocular humor about his new children's novel, ""One on a Time"", published in 1917 by Hodder and Stoughton. He jovially pokes fun at himself when notes to Seligman, ""You seem to have had nearly all the copies of ""Once on a Time"" which were sold. This is my favorite book, and it is a shock to find that I only had two readers when I thought I had eight."" Milne heavily critiqued this book, and was known to have even said ""This is an odd book"" and indeed it is very difficult to classify. Ostensibly a typical fairytale, it tells the story of the war between the kingdoms of Euralia and Barodia and the political shenanigans which take place in Euralia in the king's absence, all supposedly rewritten by Milne from the writings of the fictional historian ""Roger Scurvilegs"".This letter marks the early beginnings of the making of one of the most famous children's authors of the 20th century! Milne created ""Once on a Time"" to contain believable, three-dimensional characters, rather than the stereotypes which will satisfy children. Hence the book introduces us to a princess who is far from helpless; a prince who, whilst handsome, is also pompous and vain; an enchantment which is almost entirely humorous; a villain who is not entirely villainous and receives no real comeuppance; a good king who isn't always good; an evil king who isn't always evil, and so on. The result is a book which children may not enjoy as much as adults. The book was written by Milne partly for his wife, upon whom the character of the Countess Belvane was partially based. He was known to grapple with the definition of a children's book, and philosophical about what exactly constitutes the definition of a children's book, including ""Once on a Time"". Milne was known to have said ""Is it a children's book? Well, what do we mean by that? Is The Wind In The Willows a children's book? Is Alice in Wonderland? Is Treasure Island? These are masterpieces which we read with pleasure as children, but with how much more pleasure when we are grown-up. In any case, what do we mean by ""children""? A boy of three, a girl of six, a boy of ten, a girl of fourteen - are they all to like the same thing? And is a book ""suitable for a boy of twelve"" any more likely to please a boy of twelve than a modern novel is likely to please a man of thirty-seven; even if the novel be described truly as ""suitable for a man of thirty-seven""? I confess that I cannot grapple with these difficult problems. But I am very sure of this: that no one can write a book which children will like, unless he write it for himself first. That being so, I shall say boldly that this is a story for grown-ups. [...] But, as you see, I am still finding it difficult to explain just what sort of book it is. Perhaps no explanation is necessary. Read in it what you like; read it to whomever you like; be of what age you like; it can only fall into one of the two classes. Either you will enjoy it, or you won't.""This delightful early letter, signed in full by A.A. Milne, is shown below. Little did he know at the time just how much he would come to dominate children's literature, with no worries about just how many copies were to be sold and read:""12 . 1 . 20Dear Mr. Seligman,I am afraid we cannot manage lunch on Thursday. My wife is a way at present, and probably comes back on that afternoon and I am engaged (illegible) thursday. After … if we may; or you must come and see us then and be introduced to the elephant outside the door.Re. Simpson. First … he is imaginary, though I know somebody like him (in manner, not in appearance). But curiously enough my wife and I were at the theatre on Thursday – though not in a box- and on the way out I was spoken to by a man whom I know slightly who is exactly like Simpson, this imaginary Simpson, in appearance. I feel that this must have been the man you saw. Otherwise the whole theatre seems to have been crowded with them. You seem to have had (illegible) the copies of ""Once on a Time"" which were sold. This is my favorite book, and it is a shock to find that I only had two readers when I thought I had eight. But I am very grateful to you for insisting on it.Yours sincerely,A.A. Milne"""
