        AUTOCRACY AND WAR

, 1919 1919. London: Printed for Private Circulation (by Thomas J. Wise), 1919. Original light grey wrappers. First Edition, being one of only 25 copies (so stated). AUTOCRACY AND WAR had appeared in the July 1905 issue of Fortnightly Review, and would later be collected in NOTES ON LIFE & LETTERS. This was the first of Thomas J. Wise's twenty very-limited-issue Conrad pamphlets produced during the twelve months between February 1919 and January 1920; this title is long enough (66 pages) that the wrapper is glued on, rather than being stitched together with the leaves. (As spelled out by Cagle (pp 251-256), Conrad was very much involved in these items -- wanting a share of the considerable cash collectors would pay for them, but also wanting to distance himself from the implied mercantilism that angered his less-affluent fans.)~This is a fine copy, with neither wear nor soil, and with the leaves entirely unopened. Cagle A25.

SCRAPBOOK / PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM Of A RED CROSS NURSE

(divers places), 1919. Commercial black cloth "Scrap Album" with black cord tie. General wear & soiling to album covers. A few items detached, and laid-in, with evidence that a few items have been removed. Nevertheless, generally Very Good condition.. 50 leaves of black mounting paper, of which 32 have photos, documents, mementos, letters, drawings, etc attached, including: over 10 official documents accomplished in typescript or manuscript, including Allen's' photographic and finger-printed War Department Certificate of Identity; 7 mimeographed documents, including the satirical "Ten Commandments For the Red Cross Nurses at Camp Cody" ("1. Thou shalt not be seen with a male escort unless Thou have a special permit," etc.); 12 pieces of correspondence of which 6 are signed (the remaining signed in facsimile); 4 original hand-colored drawings by the same artist, presumably a convalescing soldier with a raunchy sense of humor; 4 telegrams from Allen to her sister Mary; 3 unsigned notes; 19 newsclippings; and 8 pieces of miscellaneous ephemera, including a manuscript poem dedicated to Minnie ("Miss Allen, we're proud / You're first of our crowd / To fare forth to fight / With medical might.."). ~ 120 photographs [many captioned], primarily silver-gelatin, ranging in size from snapshot [2-1/2" x 3-1/2"] to 7-1/2" x 5-1/2" to one as large as 7-1/2" x 11-3/8". Oblong format: 11-1/8" x 15-1/4" Substantial scrapbook devoted to the compiler's tenure as a Red Cross nurse during the American involvement in World War I. Minnie Allen, a native of Los Angeles, was called to duty as a reserve nurse in early January of 1918, spending her training at Camp Cody in Deming, New Mexico, before serving overseas in Hampshire, England. Of especial interest are the photographs, many of which document life at Camp Cody, an army training base for the National Guard units making up the 34th Infantry Division, in Deming, New Mexico, active from 1916 to 1919; numerous official group photographs and candid individual portraits, including a series of Allen herself in her nurse's garb; aerial shots of the soldiers at the Camp forming the "Animated Crest of the 34th Division." Additional interior shots show the isolation ward at the camp, as well as a number of photographs of the nurses horsing around. The original drawings herein include a comely nurse pushing a soldier in a wheelchair as the soldier gives us a wink; in another, a pajama-clad soldier throws his medicine over his soldier when the nurse isn't looking. All-in-all, a colorful, detailed, & entertaining portrait of an American Red Cross nurse's experience during the Great War.

        The Prince and Betty

Newnes 1919 - A rarity and I don't get so excited anymore which is a bit sad but this one quickened my pulse for a few reasons .Firstly Mcilvaine wonderful though she is has got it wrong in this case and secondly as there is no wrapper that I know of for the Mills and Boon edition this becomes the first UK jacketed copy of this title .Weve long thought the bibliography was suspect but when this copy turned up in Sydney we had some proof ,as the sticker states its uniform with My Man Jeeves and is also uniform with other titles I have by W W Jacobs September 1919. Its of interest bibliographically as it has wine red cloth which is identified by Mcilvaine as the first issue of My Man Jeeves having the 1/9 wrapper .So I think there were two issues of cloth used for My Man Jeeves, wine red and salmon being the second .My other copies of W W Jacobs also have wine red cloth . The wrapper was fragile and was missing parts of the spine,( not the price) and Richard Reeve has restored those missing pieces .An interesting item that has made an old man very happy [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sonnica. [Signed]

First English - language edition. New York, Duffield & Co., 1919. Octavo. 331 pages. Illustrated Hardcover. Near fine in publisher's illustrated boards with slight bumping to lower spine and light foxing to top of the pages. Signed by Ibañez on the titlepage. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (29 January 1867 - 28 January 1928) was a journalist, politician and best-selling Spanish novelist in various genres whose most widespread and lasting fame in the English-speaking world is from Hollywood films adapted from his works. He was born in Valencia. At university, he studied law and graduated in 1888 but never went into practice. He was more interested in politics, journalism, literature and women. He was a particular fan of Miguel de Cervantes. In politics he was a militant Republican partisan in his youth and founded a newspaper, El Pueblo (translated as The People) in his hometown. The newspaper aroused so much controversy that it was taken to court many times. In 1896, he was arrested and sentenced to a few months in prison. He made many enemies and was shot and almost killed in one dispute. The bullet was caught in the clasp of his belt. He had several stormy love affairs. He volunteered as the proofreader for the novel Noli Me Tangere, in which the Filipino patriot José Rizal expressed his contempt of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. He travelled to Argentina in 1909 where two new cities, Nueva Valencia and Cervantes, were created. He gave conferences on historical events and Spanish literature. Tired and disgusted with government failures and inaction, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez moved to Paris at the beginning of World War I. When living in Paris, Ibáñez had been introduced to the poet and writer Robert W. Service by their mutual publisher Fisher Unwin, who asked Robert W. Service to act as an interpreter in the deal of a contract concerning Ibáñez. He was a supporter of the Allies in World War I. He died in Menton, France in 1928, the day before his 61st birthday, in the residence of Fontana Rosa (also named the House of Writers, dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes, Charles Dickens and Honoré de Balzac) that he built. His first published novel was "La araña negra" (‚The Black Spider') in 1892, an immature work that he later repudiated - a study of the connections between a noble Spanish family and the Jesuits throughout the 19th century. It seems to have been a vehicle for him to express his anti-clerical views. In 1894, he published his first mature work, a novel called "Arroz y tartana" (Airs and Graces). The story is about a widow in late 19th century Valencia trying to keep up appearances in order to marry her daughters well. His next books consist of detailed studies of aspects of rural life in the farmlands of Valencia - the so-called huerta that the Moorish colonizers had created to grow crops such as rice, vegetables and oranges, with a carefully planned irrigation system in an otherwise arid landscape. The concern with depicting the details of this lifestyle qualifies Blasco Ibáñez as an example of Costumbrismo:Flor de mayo (1895) (‚Mayflower')La barraca (novel) (es) (1898) (‚The Hut')Entre naranjos (es) (1900) (‚Between Orange Trees')Cañas y barro (es) (1902) (‚Reeds and Mud') These works also show the influence of Naturalism which he would most likely have assimilated through reading Émile Zola. The characters in these works are determined by the interaction of heredity, environment and social conditions - race, milieu, et moment - and the novelist is acting as a kind of scientist, drawing out the influences that are acting upon them at any given moment. They are powerful works but are sometimes flawed by heavy-handed didactic elements. For example, in La Barraca, the narrator often preaches the need for these ignorant people to be better-educated. There is also a strong political element - he shows how destructive it is for these poor farm-workers to be fighting each other rather than uniting against their true oppressors - the Church and the land-owners. However, alongside the preaching, there are lyrical and highly detailed accounts of how the irrigation canals are managed and of the workings of the age-old "tribunal de las aguas" - a court composed of farmers that meets weekly close by Valencia Cathedral to decide which farm gets to receive water when and which also arbitrates on disputes on access to water. "Cañas y barro" is often adjudged[citation needed] the masterpiece of this phase of Blasco Ibáñez's writings. After that, his writing changed markedly. He left behind costumbrismo and Naturalism and began to set his novels in more cosmopolitan locations than the huerta of Valencia. His plots became more sensational and melodramatic. Academic criticism of him in the English-speaking world has largely ignored these works, although they form by far the majority of his published output - some 30 works. Some of these works attracted the attention of Hollywood studios and became the basis of celebrated films. Prominent among these is Sangre y arena (es) (Blood and Sand, 1908), which follows the career of Juan Gallardo from his poor beginnings as a child in Seville, to his rise to celebrity as a matador in Madrid, where he falls under the spell of the seductive Doña Sol, which leads to his downfall. Ibáñez directed a 65-minute film version in 1917. There are three remakes made in 1922, 1941 and 1989, respectively. His greatest personal success probably came from the novel Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) (1916), which tells a tangled tale of the French and German sons-in-law of an Argentinian land-owner who find themselves fighting on opposite sides in the First World War. When this was filmed by Rex Ingram in 1921, it became the vehicle that propelled Rudolph Valentino to stardom. Rex Ingram also filmed Mare Nostrum - a spy story from 1918 - in 1926 as a vehicle for his wife Alice Terry at his MGM studio in Nice. Michael Powell claimed in his memoirs that he had his first experience of working in films on that production. A further two Hollywood films can be singled out, as they were the first films that were made by Greta Garbo following her arrival at MGM in Hollywood -The Torrent (based on Entre naranjos from 1900), and The Temptress (derived from La Tierra de Todos from 1922).         A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes.

Washington, D.C., Smithsonian Institution, 1919. 8vo. In recent full cloth with gilt lettering to front board. In "Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, Vol. 71, No. 2". Last plate with a few scratches, otherwise a fine and clean copy. (4), 69 pp. + 25 photographic plates on 10 pages. ¶ First edition of Goddard's seminal work, "the most influential book ever written about rocket science" (Rocket Science Institute), constituting the very first proposal to use rocket propulsion to attain escape velocity and land a projectile on the moon. This "first monograph in English on the use of rockets for space travel" (Ciancone 84), "established Goddard as one of the three great, pioneering figures, along with the Russian Konstantine E. Tsiolkovskii and the Transylvania-born Hermann Oberth, in the history of spaceflight" (ANB)."Goddard, a physics professor at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., had published an arid little paper on an outrageous topic, rocket travel. Unlike most of his colleagues, Goddard believed rocketry was a viable technology, and his paper, primly titled "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes," was designed to prove it. For the lay reader, there wasn't much in the writing to excite interest, but at the end, the buttoned-up professor unbuttoned a bit. If you used his technology to build a rocket big enough, he argued, and if you primed it with fuel that was powerful enough, you just might be able to reach the moon with it." (Time 100)."The publication in 1919 of his seminal paper "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes" gave Goddard distorted publicity because he had suggested that jet propulsion could be used to attain escape velocity and that this theory could be proved by crashing a flash-powder missile on the moon. Sensitive to criticism of his moon-rocket idea, he worked quietly and steadily toward the perfection of his rocket technology and techniques. With an eye toward patentability of demonstrated systems and with the aid of no more than a handful of technicians, Goddard achieved a series of workable liquid-fuel flights starting in 1926. Through the patronage of Charles A. Lindbergh, the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation, and the Carnegie and Smithsonian institutions, the Goddards and their small staff were able to move near Roswell, New Mexico. There, during most of the 1930's, Goddard demonstrated, despite many failures in his systematic static and flight tests, progressively more sophisticated experimental boosters and payloads, reaching speeds of 700 miles per hour and altitudes above 8,000 feet in several test flights. Among Goddard's successful innovations were fuel-injection systems, regenerative cooling of combustion chambers, gyroscopic stabilization and control, instrumented payloads and recovery systems, guidance vanes in the exhaust plume, gimbaled and clustered engines, and aluminum fuel and oxidizer pumps."         Kew Gardens.

Richmond: Hogarth Press, 1919 - Octavo. Original Omega Workshop paper wrappers hand-coloured in blue, dark red and green, paper label to front cover. Housed in a custom quarter orange morocco and cloth slipcase and matching chemise. With the cancel slip "L. and V. Woolf" over the imprint (as always). A beautiful copy, with just a little rubbing to spine. Woodcut frontispiece (second state, printed on a separate piece of paper and pasted onto the page, no priority) and tailpiece by Vanessa Bell. First edition, one of around 150 copies, of this key title in the Hogarth Press history. The Press was founded by the Woolfs in their drawing room in 1917 at Hogarth House with a small hand press, which could set only two pages at a time, and was capable of printing only 150 copies. However, this tiny hand-printed edition of Kew Gardens was suddenly and unexpectedly successful, bolstered by a glowing review in the Times Literary Supplement on 29 May 1919: "Here is 'Kew Gardens' – a work of art, made, 'created' as we say, finished, four-square; a thing of original and therefore strange beauty, with its own 'atmosphere,', its own vital force. Quotation cannot present its beauty, or as we should like to say, its being Perhaps the beginning might be suppler; but the more one gloats over 'Kew Gardens' the more beauty shines out of it; and the fitter to it seems this cover that is like no other cover, and carries associations; and the more one likes Mrs. Bell's 'Kew Gardens' woodcuts" (Woolmer, p. xxiv). It was the first of the Press's publications to feature the covers so admired by the reviewer, using brilliantly patterned or marbled heavy paper, all individually and carefully sourced by the Woolfs. Woolf wrote excitedly of the effects of the review in A Writer's Diary: "we came back from Asheham [June 3] to find the hall table stacked, littered with orders for Kew Gardens". Prior to the review, they had sold only 49 copies, and, unable to fulfil the rush of orders on their own, the Woolfs turned to a commercial printer for the first time, Richard Madley, to print a second edition of 500 copies. This was Virginia Woolf's third publication, and the first book that her sister Vanessa illustrated. Leonard later noted that her success with Kew Gardens was "'the first of many unforeseen happenings which led us, unintentionally and and often reluctantly, to turn the Hogarth Press into a commercial publishing house' as well as a turning-point in her own development as a writer: 'Kew Gardens' was 'as microcosm of all her then unwritten novels" (Caws and Luckhurst, p. 329).         Herbert Hoover Drafts Note, and Fredtjof Nansen Sends Letter to Vladimir Lenin, Trying to Get Lenin to Accept Food Aid for Starving Russians During the Russian Civil War

1919 - Autograph Note, undated [April, 1919]. Cover sheet: "Draft note (undated) / Dr. Nansen to Lenin in / Mr. Hoover's handwriting." 1 p., 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 in. #24850.01 With FRIDTJOF NANSEN, Typed Letter Signed, to VLADIMIR LENIN, Paris, France, April 17, 1919. 4 pp., 8 1/4 x 10 3/4 in. This compound letter includes Nansen's proposal for Russian relief to the Big Four allied leaders, their response, and his proposal to Lenin. It is a remarkable compilation of the prospects for and obstacles to efforts to ease Russian suffering. "The Government and peoples whom we represent would be glad to cooperate, without thought of political, military or financial advantage, in any proposal which would relieve this situation in Russia."To combat starvation in Europe during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson created the United States Food Administration by executive order. Under the direction of Herbert Hoover, it became one of the most efficient and successful governmental initiatives in American history. More than 5 million Russians died of starvation before food aid was allowed in 1921. Historical BackgroundAlthough Norway, like Sweden and Demark, declared its neutrality during the war, its loss of overseas trade led to food shortages. In 1917, Norway sent explorer and scientist Dr. Fridtjof Nansen to the United States, where after months of discussion, he obtained food supplies in return for the establishment in Norway of a rationing system. In Russia a pair of revolutions in 1917 left the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin in power, and Lenin ended Russian participation in World War I by March 1918. Civil war erupted within Russia, which continued for several years, but the Bolsheviks emerged victorious as the Communist Party, which led to the creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1922.By the spring of 1919, Russia had been out of the war for a year, but the civil war created havoc, and millions neared starvation. Hoover needed a "neutral executive" like Nansen to serve as an intermediary with the Russians. On April 3, Nansen sent a letter (drafted by Hoover), to President Wilson and the other members of the Big Four, proposing the plan and, after obtaining approval, wired the offer to Lenin on April 17. The second paragraph of this page of draft notes appears verbatim as the last paragraph of Nansen's letter to Lenin. The French, unwilling to do anything to keep the Bolsheviks in power, never sent Nansen's telegram to Lenin. The offer was resent, by radio on May 3. The Russians' response on May 14 was also blocked by the French, but picked up by radio and relayed to Hoover. Russia's refusal to stop fighting until they had achieved their objectives blocked the proposed plan. Two years later, an even deeper famine struck Russia. By the time it was over, it killed more than 5 million people, primarily in the Volga and Ural River regions. Unlike in 1919, Lenin allowed outside aid, or the death toll would have been even more horrific. In August 1921, the International Committee for Russian Relief (ICRR) was organized in Geneva, with Nansen as its High Commissioner. Hoover's American Relief Administration provided the bulk of the aid that went to Russia during 1922 and 1923, but the ICRR fed hundreds of thousands as well. These documents illuminate an incredible period of world history, bridged here briefly by a single man, with no agenda other than a humanitarian desire to feed the starving.Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov to a wealthy, middle-class family in Simbirsk. After his brother was executed in 1887 for attempting to assassinate the emperor, Lenin turned to revolutionary socialist politics. Arrested for sedition in 1897 and exiled for three years, he later moved to Western Europe, where he became a prominent political theorist. He hoped that World War I would turn into a European proletarian revolution, and when the February Revolution ousted the czar in 1917. (See website for full description)
