        Frau mit Katze.

1919. Holzschnitt 1919. Abdruck auf festem Velin. 18:13,5 cm. Erschienen in F. Boettger, "OTTOLANGE", Verzeichnis , Dresden, 1919.. Otto Lange gehörte u.a. zur Künstlergruppe "Dresdner Sezzession, Gruppe 1919". S. 55/56).

        In der Strafkolonie. Erzählung.

Leipzig, Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1919.. Oktav. 4 Bl., S. 5 - 68, 2 Bl. Orig.-Engl.

1919-1921. Half Morocco. . Fine. Manuscript containing 84 original mounted watercolors depicting the Franco-Prussian War. 4to. 29 by 24 cm. 16 leaves with text and painted flags of all the German regiments in the war, followed by the 84 watercolors, each with a title written onto a separate sheet preceding it. At the end, a four page table of contents. While the illustrations are in a sense celebrating the German army and its individual regiments, the paintings are also undeniably beautiful, and in their impressive detail, come off as highly realistic and honest. The artist, about whom nothing is known beyond this body of work, showed meticulous care in rendering uniforms and weaponry, and he was also clearly an accomplished equestrian artist, capturing the horse in its power, motion, attitudes and terror. One would have to think that the author must have had an intent to publish this collection, but there is no evidence that this ever occurred, or that this was indeed an actual aspiration. What one has here, then, is a collection that is as good, and arguably superior, to the several artist's collections that were in fact published in the aftermath of the war.

SOUTH. The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917

William Heinemann. London. 1919. William Heinemann. London. 1919. FIRST EDITION. 1st impression. Large 8vo. (10.1 x 6.5 inches). Illustrated with colour photo frontis, five maps-including one large folding, and 87 mono photographic plates. Generally a very good copy but one of the plates has pink paint to the top margin that just encroaches onto the edge of the image, some of the pink has transferred to the top of the text page opposite. There are three other paint marks on text pages, one is just a couple of small light blue brush marks over opposite pages, another is bigger blue brush marks over opposite pages and the third is a couple of small yellow and pink brush strokes to the margin of another pair of leaves. (Please ask for photographs of the affected areas). Aside from these four areas with paint marks the pages are in slightly better condition than usually found with this edition. This first impression was printed on poor quality paper and is prone to browning but, on the whole, this copy is in better condition than usually encountered although the page edges do inevitably still show some level of darkening. Original publishers dark blue cloth with silver illustration of The Endurance to front board. Spine and front board lettered in silver. Publishers blind stamped device to back board. Minor rubbing to the extremities and very small split(about 0.3 inch), without loss, to the top front hinge. Apart from the paint marks listed this is overall a very good, tight and bright copy of this classic book.

Towards Evolutionary Psychology / Theodore Schroeder : a collection of offprints, essays and articles bound by author in 1 volume with his considerable manuscript annotation and correction

various publishers, 1919-1941. various publishers, 1919-1941, 1919. 1st Edition in this form. Good copy in a gilt-blocked cloth binding. Spine ends somewhat worn, with panel edges slightly dulled and rubbed. Bumped corners. Some tanning and browning internally. Editorial annotations throughout. Remains quite well-preserved overall. Further scans, images etc. and additional bibliographical material available on request. A collection of offprints, essays and articles by Theodore Schroeder bound in 1 volume, submitted for publication. A letter tipped-in to front pastedown states that the author is submitting the volume of papers for "editorial consideration." Some contents are bound, and some are tipped-in. Spine title: Toward evolutionary psychology. Head of contents page reads: Essays along the road from psychoanalysis to evolutionary psychology. Subjects: Psychology -- Philosophy -- Religion -- Medicine -- Sociology -- Culture and society -- Law -- Essays, articles etc. -- United States. The majority of articles contain editorial annotations. Biographical note: Schroeder was a a prolific and controversial author, who wrote mainly of issues pertaining to freedom of expression. His writings became the subject of a lawsuit following his death. In his will, Schroeder left his estate to two friends, with the instruction that the money from the estate be used to gather his voluminous writings and publish them. Two of Schroeder's cousins, with whom he had no contact, contested the will, and successfully voided it. In upholding a lower court's decision, Judge O'Sullivan of the Supreme Court of Errors the State of Connecticut explained, "The law will not declare a trust valid when the object of the trust, as the finding discloses, is to distribute articles which reek of the sewer." There appears to be no record of this volume of writings being published in one volume during the author's lifetime. Description: various paginations, 24cm. Includes a selection of related newspaper and magazine clippings loosey inserted.

PLEASANT COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        ONE DAY MORE

1919 - [1 of 24 copies signed by Conrad] A Play in One Act. (London: The Beaumont Press, 1919.) Original patterned boards with vellum spine, with cover label. Beaumont Press edition, of which this is one of 24 numbered copies printed on Japan vellum and signed by Conrad (this is copy #19). There were also 250 unsigned copies, numbered 25-274, printed on hand-made paper and with a cloth rather than vellum spine. Conrad's story "To-Morrow" was included in his 1903 volume TYPHOON AND OTHER STORIES. He then dramatized the tale as "One Day More," and it was performed (but not published) in 1904. It appeared in the August 1913 issue of the English Review, but did not appear in book form (25 privately-printed copies) until 1917, after which came this 274-copy edition -- the sixth book published by the Beaumont Press. ONE DAY MORE was not broadly available until 1924, when it was published together with Conrad's play "Laughing Anne." This is a fine copy, essentially as new. Cagle A20b(1). Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Gunroom.

London: A. & C. Black, Ltd., 1919 - Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial dust jacket. Spine gently cocked, spine ends slightly rubbed, very light tanning to endpapers. Otherwise an excellent copy in a bright jacket with lightly nicked spine ends and slightly rubbed extremities. First edition, first impression of the Morgan's first novel, based on his experiences in the Royal Navy between 1907 and 1913. The Gunroom criticised the Royal Navy, in particular the continual mistreatment of junior officers. As a result it was unofficially suppressed and thus rather rare.

THE MELLSTOCK EDITION OF THE WORKS OF THOMAS HARDY

, 1919. 1919. [with all 37 dust jackets] In Thirty-Seven Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1919-1920. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jackets. The Mellstock Edition of Hardy's works, limited to 500 numbered sets, signed by Hardy in the first volume. Though the "Wessex Novels" may be important for the changes Hardy made to his early novels, and though the "Wessex Edition" may be the so-called "definitive edition," this is the most sumptuous and sought-after of Hardy sets. Most of the novels occupy two full volumes, the text is printed on paper watermarked with Hardy's initials, and the bindings have elaborate gilt acorn-and-oak leaf decoration on the spines (in addition to Hardy's gilt-embossed monogram on the front covers). Hardy and Macmillan had planned this edition since 1914 (tentatively titled "The Casterbridge Edition"), but production was postponed during the Great War. Hardy made a few very minor changes in some of the works, but specifically altered the geography of his novel A PAIR OF BLUE EYES...~"to correct the topography a little," he wrote to Sydney Cockerell, "the reasons that led me to disguise the spot when the book was written in 1872 no longer existing, the hand of death having taken care of that." The reference is to the first Mrs. Hardy, who had died in 1912... [Purdy]~These volumes are in fine, bright condition, with the leaves still unopened. Amazingly, all 37 volumes still retain their original dust jackets -- which carry the same elaborate spine decoration as the binding (but blue-on-white rather than gold-on-blue). At the bottom of each jacket's spine is the set's price, "37 Vols. £33 6s."; the rear panel bears an advertisement for the set, also indicating that the volumes are available at "18 s. net each." The jackets are generally in very good condition, with very minor edgewear (the top and bottom edges have been reinforced unnecessarily from the backside); one of the 37 jackets has a hole in its spine, but this has been made scarcely-evident by virtue of a loosely-inserted facsimile behind it. One sees the Mellstock Edition in original cloth, and one sees it rebound in leather, but one scarcely ever sees it still with its original dust jackets. Among sets with dust jackets still in private hands, there are only three of which we are aware, this being one of them. Purdy pp 287-288.
