Marlborough Square in the Beautiful Wilshire District on the Sixth Street Car Line. Jas. V. Baldwin. 537-38 H.W. Hellman Bldg

Los Angeles.: Jas. V. Baldwin / Tracy E. Shoults Company., No date. Ca. 1919.. Los Angeles.: Jas. V. Baldwin / Tracy E. Shoults Company.. No date. Ca. 1919.. Black and white plat map broadsheet, 17 1/2 x 15 inches, folded to 8 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches. Crayon annotations, very good condition. A particularly interesting plat map of Marlborough Square, indicating as it does that this real estate development between Temple Street (Beverly Blvd) and Rosewood Avenue, with houses fronting on Vine (N. Arden Blvd), El Centro (N. Lucerne Blvd), Larchmont and Gower, was originally in the hands of Jas. V. Baldwin, whose printed name is crossed out in red pencil with the stamp of Tracy E. Shoults & Co. Subdividors (sic) added at left. It is apparent that sold lots are marked in red, the remaining lots priced in pencil (from $1350 to $4000). An article in Motor World of March 21, 1917 discusses "James V. Baldwin's whirlwind campaign with the Saxon [automobile] line in southern California" but notes that he "was and is a Los Angeles real estate man. He still maintains two separate places of business and much of his time is spent at his real estate office although he is at the helm of one of the most successful motor car businesses in California." Tracy E. Shoults is described in J.S. McGroarty's 1921 publication "Los Angeles from the Mountains to the Sea" as instituting "His largest development project...in 1919 when he placed on the market the Windsor Square, the Windsor Heights and the Marlborough Square residential districts in Los Angeles," thus identifying this map as an early piece of merchandising in the selling of these exclusive residential districts. Both developers were obviously hewing to Baldwin's sentiment quoted in the Motor World article: "Lots in the finest tracts are easiest to sell. The finest hotels draw the best business and the finest jewelry stores sell the greatest number of gems." The map was drawn by C. Fiske, Jr. C.E.; an earlier edition of this map with James V. Baldwin as developer is listed in WorldCat (Number: 83982719) but with no libraries listed as holding the item. .

        Kew Gardens. Second edition

Richmond: [Printed by Richard Madley for] The Hogarth Press, , 1919. Richmond: [Printed by Richard Madley for] The Hogarth Press, , 1919. Octavo. Original paper wrappers hand-coloured in blue, dark red and black, white label lettered in black on front cover. Housed in a blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Woodcut frontispiece and tailpiece by Vanessa Bell. Star sticker to upper wrapper. Wrappers rubbed and frayed, closed tear to cover, contents partially disconnected from upper wrapper, some spotting to edge of lower cover. Contents unopened. A very good copy. Vanessa Bell's own copy of the first book she illustrated for the Hogarth Press, with her pencilled ownership signature to the title page. The star sticker on the upper wrapper, which also appears on other volumes from this collection, was likely used to indicate who was to inherit the book. Second edition, published June 1919 in an edition of 500 copies, following the first edition of about 170 copies published the previous month. Kew Gardens was the Woolf's first great success and the first book that Virginia's sister Vanessa illustrated. On June 9, 1919 Virginia recorded in her diary that "Nessa & I quarrelled as nearly as we ever do quarrel now over the get up of Kew Gardens, both type and woodcuts; & she firmly refused to illustrate any more stories of mine under those conditions, & went so far as to doubt the value of the Hogarth Press altogether. An ordinary printer would do better in her opinion. This both stung and chilled me. Not that she was bitter or extreme; its her reason and control that give her blame its severity". Events proved Bell to some extent correct; a glowing review in the Times Literary Supplement on May 29, 1919 led to a flood of orders that the Woolfs could not fulfil on their own, and the second edition was jobbed out to Richard Madley. But the lasting result was a triumph for both Bell and Virginia, as the review described the book as a work of art in whole, making special mention of Bell's woodcut. "But here is 'Kew gardens' – a work of art, made, 'created' as we say, finished, four-square; a thing of original and therefore strange beauty, with it's own 'atmosphere,', it's own vital force… the more one gloats over 'Kew Gardens' the more beauty shines out of it… and the more one likes Mrs. Bell's 'Kew Gardens' woodcuts" (Woolmer p. xxiv).

        MR STANDFAST

Hodder & Stoughton , 1919. Hodder & Stoughton , 1919. First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth with dark blue lettering in the original pictorial dustwrapper. A very good copy indeed, small patch of darkening to spine top, minor offsetting to the front free endpaper and bookplate of E. L. Allhusen on the front pastedown. The dustwrapper is also in very good condition, with a small chip to the upper spine (just nicking the "M" of MR in the title) and some tanning to the spine. The panels are bright and complete, as are the printed flaps. The third novel featuring Buchan's most famous character, Richard Hannay Uncommon in the original dustwrapper.

        Autograph Letter Signed

1919 - ("Arthur Byron") 7 pages, 9 1/4" x 6", on the ruled color pictorial letterhead printed by Rocky Mountain Bank Note Co. Denver (featuring an image of a head and shoulders of a Native American by Stimson) of The Plains Hotel, Cheyenne, Wyoming, August 30, 1919. A fine long letter to "Affie" [McVicker], the booking manager for Selwyn & Company, producers of the play, "Tea for Three," describing many of the difficulties that the touring company encountered while traveling east out of Los Angeles, California during a railroad strike. In part: "We left Los Angeles last Monday by automobile after we heard that gasoline was growing scarce, and the steamers to Frisco were sold out - Violent mobs were active - There was no doubt about the Bolshevistic influence behind the sudden upheaval - [W]e arrived in Frisco only to find that all trains were annulled - the strike was in force and we met no westbound trains - Railroad men advised us to get to New York before Sept. 2nd as a general strike is expected - Of course we fully realized that we were responsible in case we did not appear with the production wherever it could get to - I understand why - you thought Miller could surely [have] made Ogden. But - the railroad yards in Los Angeles were congested with thousands of cars & locomotives - and none leaving. Twenty five cars of mail were mixed up in the mess, and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce announced that a million dollars of perishable materials were ruined in the yards - " The leaves have old tape at the margin. Very good. Byron's autograph is rare in any form. This is the only the second autograph of his we have ever seen, and the first letter. Arthur Byron (1872-1943), born Arthur William Byron, April 3, 1872, Brooklyn, New York; died July 17, 1943, Hollywood, California; American actor; films include: "The Mummy" 1932 playing Sir Joseph Whemple; "20,000 Years in Sing Sing" 1932; "The Mayor of Hell" 1933; "The Casino Murder Cast" 1935; "The Prisoner of Shark Island" 1936.

      A. C. McClurg & Company, Chicago, 1919. Very Good with no dust jacket. First Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover Publisher's full brown cloth, gilt lettering on spine and cover. A heartfelt memorial, this is a collection of letters and poems of Second Lieutenant Dinsmore Ely, written to his family in Winnetka, Illinois, during World War I. At the outbreak of the war, he volunteered in the American Ambulance Field Service so that he might secure immediate passage to France and go at once into active service. Arriving there on the fourth of July, 1917, on the sixth he volunteered and was accepted the same day, in the Lafayette Flying Corps. Shot down while flying in his Spad over France (near Villacoublay) on April 21, 1918, he died in a Paris hospital and was buried in Des Gonard's Cemetery, at Versailles. The Lafayette Flying Corps is a name given to the American volunteer pilots who flew for the French during World War I. Extremely scarce. Nuclear Constitution of Atoms

London: The Royal Society. London: The Royal Society. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN RARE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Rutherford's prediction of the existence of the neutron. The prestigious Bakerian Lecture. After Rutherford's discovery of the proton in 1919, "the structure the nucleus was beginning to take shape except for one piece of the puzzle. In a 1920 paper entitled 'Nuclear Constitution of Atoms,' Rutherford proposed a second constituent of the nucleus, based on the results of the decisive experiments of 1911-1913. As soon as the atomic nucleus was discovered, and its charge determined, it was found that the mass of the nucleus (in units of hydrogen mass) was almost twice its atomic number. This naturally led to the assumption that other particles must be present in the nuclei beside protons; and that these particles must be electrically neutral. This neutrality prompted Rutherford to suggest that these particles must consist of a proton and a 'nuclear electron'" (Hassani, From Atoms to Galaxies). The existence of the neutron was ultimately proven in 1932 by his student and associate James Chadwick, who won the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery. (At the end of his 1920 paper, Rutherford credits Chadwick for his assistance in some of the experiments.) Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Rutherford neutron hypothesis." IN: Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series A. Vol 97, July 1, 1920, pp. 374-400. London: for The Royal Society by Harrison & Sons, 1920. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. Stamp on front cover, wrappers with a little toning to bottom edge and chip to base of spine. Extremely rare in original wrappers.
