        Verbannte.

Zurich: Rascher & Cie., 1919 - Octavo. Original green wrappers printed in blue. Unopened; errata slip tipped in, lightly discolored at edges. First German edition. With the author's signed presentation inscription, "To Scofield Thayer with grateful regards James Joyce Zurich Switzerland 8.ix.919". Published in Switzerland at Joyce's own expense in an edition of 600 copies; the first of any of Joyce's works to be translated. A presentation copy, inscribed on the first leaf: To Scofield Thayer with grateful regards James Joyce Zurich Switzerland 8.ix.919. The "grateful regards" are for a $700 gift Thayer made earlier in the year to the Joyces. Thayer, the wealthy co-founding editor of the third and final incarnation of the Dial, was one of Joyce's most ardent supporters during the 1921 New York censorship trial over the serialization of Ulysses in the Little Review, during which he took the witness stand as a supporter. The translation into German is by Hannah von Mettal. Slocum and Cahoon D44. Ezra Pound offered what is perhaps the most illuminating assessment of Exiles, Joyce's only play. After reading the manuscript in September 1915, he wrote to Joyce: I have just finished the play. Having begun it (cliché) I could not (cliché) leave off until (cliché). Yes, it is interesting. It won't do for the stage. (No, it is unsuitable for the "Abbey," as mebbe ye might kno'aw fer yourself, Mr J'ice). It is exciting. But even read it takes very close concentration of attention. I don't believe an audience could follow it or take it in, even if some damd impracticable manager were to stage it. Not that I believe any manager would stage it in our chaste and castrated english speaking world. Roughly speaking, it takes about all the brains I've got to take in the thing, reading, and I suppose I've more intelligence than the normal theatre goer (god save us). I may be wrong, the actual people moving on stage might underline and emphasise the meaning and the changes of mood. Of course your play is emotional. It works up quite a whirl of emotion, and it has, undoubtedly, form. I don't think it is nearly as intense as "The Portrait," at least I don't feel it as much. My resultant impression is one of a tired head. It will form an interesting 1/4 volume when you bring out your collected works. When you are a recognized classic people will read it because you wrote it and be duly interested and duly instructed, but until then I'm hang'd if I see what's to be done with it (Pound/Joyce pp.45-7). Nevertheless, Pound promised "I will see that your play is read by the agent of one very practical American dramatic company, which does big business," and he convinced John Quinn to contact a New York theatrical agent whose name, to Joyce's delight, was L. Bloom (Carpenter p.278). After the publication of Exiles, Pound reviewed it for The Future: "Exiles," by James Joyce, is a play perhaps unstageable, but infinitely more worth staging than the inanities which the once active Stage Society now indulges in. We find the most brilliant of our novelists here trying the inferior form. As chamber drama, Mr. Joyce writes with all the talent he had as a novelist. He adds a sense of possible stage comedy in a scene furnished with a perfume sprayer. (The Future, November 1918, p.287). Exiles opened in New York on February 19, 1925 and ran for forty-one performances. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

The first printing consisted of fifteen hundred copies, according to Brussell. It bears a further inscription in an early hand: "Here's How John Jan 5 Roy." In them he pictures a succession of fascinating heroines habited in quaint and picturesque costumes, amid surroundings which, though belonging to no definite place or period, are always appropriate and congruous. His heroes are hardly less charming than his heroines, and the scenes in which they are represented constitute a series of fascinating and delightful pictures ... one must feel grateful to Mr Rackham for giving us the prettiest picture book of the season" (The Connoisseur, Vol. LVI, 1920).“Never did old poems appear so gayly bedecked than Some British Ballads, which Arthur Rackham has gorgeously illustrated with 16 paintings… It is hard to decide which the more attractive feature of this book—Mr. Rackham’s paintings or the ballads themselves” (New York Times)."No more effective inspiration for the gifted brush of Arthur Rackham could be found than these popular old ballads. Handsomely printed and bound, this magnificent work should appeal to all" (The Atlantic Monthly, Dec. 1920).

Who\'s Who\" revisions to FDR\'s biographical sketch made by FDR in his own hand in 1919, including the excising of one word <I>\"Democrat\"</I>

Autograph Document [Note] Signed, \"Franklin D. Roosevelt\", Who\'s Who in America revision form, September 26, 1919, one page, 8.5\" x 11\". An update form from Who\'s Who in America from 1919, with the biography of FDR from a prior edition pasted on the form for revision purposes. FDR makes several updates and pens in some other accomplishments in his own hand, such as being \"in charge of inspection of U.S. naval forces in European waters, July-Sept. 1918 and of demobilization in Europe-Jan-Feb, 1919.\" Interestingly enough, FDR seems to overemphasize the significance of his executive duties vis-a-vis American demobilization in his 1919 Who\'s Who revision in his own hand. FDR also adds that he is an \"Overseer of Harvard\" (a position he held until 1924). Some inked editorial changes include excision of one word (\"Democrat\"- an interesting word to excise on a document of this type, given the fact that FDR would forever transform the Democratic Party in the United States) in FDR\'

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Starnberg, 3. X. 1919.. 2 SS. 4to.. An seinen Freund Theodor Kuh: "[...] Ich habe mich riesig über Dein Lebenszeichen gefreut. Gleichzeitig geht ein Pack Fotos an Dich ab. Darunter solche unserer Villa.

Coppertop: The Queer Adventures of a Quaint Child

Melbourne Publishing Company, Melbourne 1919 - Octavo, colour frontispiece and six colour plates; front endpaper damaged by removal of early owner's inscription, slight spotting, but a very good copy in the original boards with oval colour portrait onlay; the unusual dustjacket (cut to show the portrait on the front board) with some foxing, but in good condition. With the unusual dustjacket. First edition, with beautiful colour plates by the author. Gaze was one of the most prolific authors of books for children in this period, and this fantasy about the adventures of a small girl in a world where she meets people such as the Clerk of the Weather and the South Wind is one of his most popular works. Coppertop, and its sequel Coppertop Cruises (1920), were marvellous vehicles for Gaze's fine, opalescent-hued watercolours. The plates in these, and his other Australian-published works, 'established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite' (Holden, A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy, p. 82).         The Book of Folly A Volume of Original Caricatures in Pen-and-Ink from the Library of Viscount Long

England. Full Morocco. Good. Oblong, 15 by 23 cm. Unpaginated, with 42 pages containing ink illustrations and/or verse, most of which are outlandish and nonsense often in the spirit of Edward Lear. The album had a few contributors, each of whom initialed his contribution. One poem is signed William Colquhoun. Otherwise, the contributions are initialed and their precise identities are unknown. It is probable that a number of the limericks and/or ink illustrations were done by children of the Walter Long, created the First Viscount Long, and their friends. The book carries the bookplate of Long on its FEP, and many of the items are initialed with an L. Long, known as a Irish Unionist, was a leading politician during World War One and the period directly prior and after, serving as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1919 to 1921. The level of artistic proficiency is various, the very best of the artwork has the unforced fluency of a cartoon by a Rococo master, when it is elaborate, or sure-handed and crisp, when a more minimalist sketchy line drawing. And at the lower end, even the most unskilled illustrations do not fail to amuse. (Nowadays, when no longer is artistic self-expression widely cultivated, it is inconceivable that such an album could be created.) The verse has a similar range but also should never fail to bring at least a smile of appreciation. Subject-wise, there is a generous dose of mayhem, cruelty, slapstick, and freakish traits and perverse tics -- after all, limericks predominate! There is one narrative set of five limericks about a dog who drank tea; otherwise, the works are all free-standing. There are burlesques of cats, horses, bald ladies, the fat, the skinny -- but telling you that this poem is about the "Soldier from Naples" or that one, "the old man on the moon", really doesn&#39;t relate much about their humor and warpness. Most of the entries are directly into the album, with a handful of illustrations pasted instead. Surface chips, scuffs and heavy wear to the red morocco, with repairs to the spine extremities. Toning and some light soiling to the leaves. One closed tear repaired.

        Picture Show (Limited Edition)

Cambridge: Privately Printed for the Author by J.B. Peace at the University Press, Cambridge, 1919 Unpaginated. Privately Printed for the Author by J.B. Peace at the University Press, Cambridge, and limited to 200 copies. Text is clean and unmarked except for a small patch of light brown off setting at poem 17, that appears to be from a newspaper clipping or bookmark. Previous owner has laid in a small print of Sassoon on the first blank page, and has a brief pencil note below it. Covers with light soiling and the paper title label is intact. The bookplate of W.A. Harding - Madingley, is on the front paste down endpaper. Harding (1870-1942) inherited Madingley Hall from his father in 1924, and the property was eventually sold to Cambridge University in 1948. Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) is best remembered for his angry and compassionate poems of the First World War, which brought him public and critical acclaim. Avoiding the sentimentality and patriotism of many other war poets, Sassoon wrote of the horror and brutality of trench warfare and contemptuously satirized generals, politicians, and churchmen for their incompetence and blind support of the war. Much of his earlier work (1906-15) was privately printed and availability remains limited. This work predates the 1920 U.S. Dutton publication and has seven fewer poems.. Limited Edition - 200 Copies. 8vo. Vg+/No Jacket. Hard Cover.

Occasional penciled or penned price emendation. on printed text leaves. Withal, a Very Good copy.. Early edition of this beautifully illustrated trade catalogue, which was premiered by the famed California Perfume Company -- predecessor to Avon -- at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. These large colour plate catalogues for their salesmen met with huge success, even though they were very expensive. The gorgeous plates illustrated beautiful art nouveau inspired bottles, packages, and advertising for perfumes, soaps, shampoos, cold creams, talcum powders, tooth paste, gift sets, and more. For the first few years, they were released with the screw-back post binders, allowing product pages to be removed, or added if needed, so the salesmen did not have to buy another catalogue just to replace a few products. Originally released with 40 colour plates in 1915/1916, the plates only illustrated the separate products, and the price lists were provided in California Perfume Company small supplement catalogues. However, by 1919, the smaller catalogues had been discontinued, and salesmen with these large colour plate catalogues inserted in-between leaves with product information. From 1920 to 1923, the number of colour plates was reduced to 36, with the explanatory leaves providing continuous pagination, however, the screw-back binders were eliminated, so that salesmen were required to buy new catalogues. . Colour-illustrated lithograph title, 20 colour plates [printed both sides], with linen numbered thumb tabs at fore-edges as issued. With 3 additional plates from the earlier 1915 CPC catalogue bound-in, along with folding brochure for American Ideal Gift assortment.
