        CHEWG-UM-BLEWG-UM

      - GAZE,HAROLD. THE CHEWG-UM-BLEWG-UM. Melbourne, Aukland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington and London: Whitcombe & Tombs Limited, [1919]. 4to (7 3/4 x 10"), [30]p., wraps, color plate on cover, string tie, faint corner stain on cover else near Fine. Illustrated by Gaze with 2 tipped- in color plates (plus color plate on cover repeated in-text), 1 tipped-in black and white plate and 8 pen and ink drawings in-text all featuring a koala, a fairy and a strange animal with the body of an emu and a camel's head. The story is told in verse. This is one of 3 titles in the Mite Merry Series. Gaze was born in New Zealand and except for a short stint at art school in London, he was largely self-taught. He eventually moved to Pasadena where he did some work for the Disney Studio. Although he didn't illustrate a large number of books his work is distinctive and wonderful. Holden in Golden Age p. 80 notes about the books in this series that "by Australian standards these titles were milestones in the history of children's book production. Their large quarto format and pleasing typography and layout were indicative of the publisher's understandable enthusiasm and belief that a major new talent had arrived." Marcie Muir notes that "After Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, the artist who dominated the fairy genre in Australian children's books was Harold Gaze " (Hist. Aust. Child. Bks. p77).         Photo Album]: Section 520 U.S. Army Ambulance Service Served in the World War. Saw Active Service in Italy, France, Belgium, Luxumberg[sic], Germany

1919 - Oblong octavo. Cord-tied flexible cloth boards with "Photographs" stamped in blind on front board. A total of 292 gelatin silver images with 277 mounted between four and nine to a page, plus 15 loose prints, all measuring between 2.5" x 2" and 7" x 5". Most images are well-captioned in white album ink. First leaf is detached, modest wear, some fading to some images, very good or better. Newspaper clipping laid in about the experiences of Charles D. Hallman of Allentown, Pennsylvania in the Ambulance Service, that extensively quotes from his letters to his parents about his unit's journey by road in their ambulances across the Alps from Italy into France. The album commences with a group photo of the unit at Fort Dix in New Jersey, with the names of the each man in the unit noted. After a few images of training camp (in gas masks, in tents, being inoculated, etc.), a parade, a shipboard boxing match, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the coast of Spain, the location swiftly shifts to Camp "Lido" in Genova, Italy with many well-captioned images of the beach, the city, ambulances, and the camp. There are many photos of various members of the unit posing and well-identified, of ships and submarines, of the English convalescent camp, and several of their journey over the Alps. Once they reach France, mostly near the Meuse River and Argonne Forest, the scenes become more military: posing in shell holes, ambulances and planes destroyed by German fire, landscapes decimated by artillery, German bombs exploding, airplanes on patrol over the hospital, observations balloons, cemeteries, captured guns and pillboxes, barbed wire, and no-man's land.A splendid album concentrated almost exclusively on the experiences of a soldier in the Ambulance Service.         Hymne an die Liebe" [3 Hymnen von Friedrich Hölderlin, Op.71, No. 1] - Autograph Manuscript Sketch Leaf, Signed on the composer's 60th Birthday

      - A large and extensively worked autograph manuscript sketchleaf for the first of the Drei Hymnen, Op. 71, accomplished in pencil on both sides of a trimmed sheet of printed musical manuscript paper, signed and dated in ink on the composer's sixtieth birthday "Richard Strauss / Garmisch, 11.6.24".  Approx. 56 measures, with vocal line and short score, as well as unidentified scoring.  Numbered "7" in the corner of the inscribed side, with additional (apparently mathematical) notations in two locations. 35.5 x 12.5 cm. Central vertical crease, else fine. The signed side of the sheet includes, from the 11th bar of the upper system, the text "Von den Wettern überschattet Bebt entzückt der Mutter Brust" ["Overshadowed by the elements / The mother's breast trembles rapturously"] and corresponding musical ideas to the final published measures 178 - 198 of Hymne an die Liebe.  Though the preceding and following measures do not seem to closely track the published score, this is evidently an early sketch for the identified work and the remaining musical ideas on the both sides are presumed to be discarded material from the same. "The years 1919 and 1920 are blank in the catalogue of Strauss's works; in 1921 he composed only - some only! - the Drei Hymnen, Op. 71, to texts by Hölderlin with accompaniment for large orchestra, songs which anticipate the richness of the Vier letze Lieder of twenty-seven years later and constitute a major work, sadly underrated and neglected.  Part of the explanation is that he was composing the opera Intermezzo and that the Vienna Opera and travels abroad ate into his time. The first performance of Op. 71 was given in Berlin on 4 November by Barbara Kemp, with Gustav Brecher conducting." (Michael Kennedy, "Richard Strauss: Man, Musician, Enigma," p. 210)We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Nigel Simeone in the identification of this manuscript.

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF SOME 190 VERNACULAR AND PROFESSIONAL IMAGES, CIRCA 1896-1919

, 1919 1919. Original photograph album. Morocco & Cloth. Very Good. Album of half red morocco and textured cloth over heavy boards, paneled spine with gilt rules, marbled endpapers. Contains about 190 photographs, including a few real-photo cards, mounted on heavy card-stock leaves. Images range in size from about 2" x 3" to 11.5" x 8.25". The largest photographs are among the most interesting and evocative. Many are captioned by hand. The album also includes one 2" x 7" watercolored mountain scene, and a few illustrations cut from periodicals. Four news clips on the rear pastedown hint at the ownership of this album--all relate to the arrival in Elmbridge, Surrey of a new Vicar, the Rev. T.E. Pritchett, to replace the retiring Reverend Coombs. There is a suggestion in a photo labeled "my rickshaw" (in Simla, showing a lady's parasol descending a hilly road) that perhaps the compiler is Rev. Pritchett's wife or a relative? A news photo of Mrs. J.H. Betts of Compton House, Kinver (England) shows her and a jockey, and the caption states that her horse won two first prizes in the hunters riding classes the Royal Show. Overall album size is 11" x 15" The photographs are presented in no particular order. Dates include: 1896 (a photo at "Tycanol Common campground in Wales, with 3 women and two men outdoors posed in front of a gypsy style caravan); 1900 (a couple in front of a house labeled "Beech Grove, Easter"); 1908 (3 women and a child in Peterbrook); 1910, crowds at Simla celebrating the "Coronation of King George" [V]; and 1919, three women and a man posed in and around a motorcar at "Dorset." ~~ The photographs of India (and a few taken in Nepal and Ceylon) are the most striking in the album. They take in many locales, including: Panchgani (the 1905 "Girls High School" class, the Chaplain's bungalow, church, etc.); Muttra (large temple, Hardinge Gate, "bathing ghat", "bazaar", etc.); Benares (including the riverside with boats and bathers, Cow Temple, and "The Morning Sacrifice"-a striking photo of a man pulling the back legs of a goat tied to a post in a courtyard); Agra (Fort, Tomb of Akbar, Pearl Mosque, Tomb of Lady of the Taj, Hall of Justice at the Fort, etc.); Bombay (Satara-a shot of a group of teen schoolboys with hockey sticks accompanied by a few Indian men and a few European men); Delhi (8 scenes, including a huge crowd labeled "The Jumma Musjid"); Simla ("my rickshaw…"-a rear view going down a winding road with three Indians and the back of a parasol, a large street scene of European women and men, the Post Office, the Narkanda School-a view of Indian boys and their teacher, a Dak bungalow, the Grand Hotel, the Church that is the scene of the celebration for the coronation of King George, etc.); and pictures taken in Mahableshwar, Mathiana, Goratpur, Fatipur-Sigra, Gorakhpur, Hathwar, Siripur, and Kalunpong. The Nepal photographs include one taken at Narkatiagung while the Ceylon images include one taken at Nusara Elayia and one at Mount Pedro. ~~ As a collection, the Indian photographs present an eclectic and evocative impression of life in the Raj. Besides many views of Indian scenes and architecture, there are highly dramatic photographs of the Indians themselves, including: a man performing the goat sacrifice mentioned above; a nearly naked man with a long beard and long locks of hair, a circle painted on his forehead, carrying a vessel; a "bhestie" carrying his waterskin ala Gunga Din; a potter at work outdoors, squatting by his vessels as he crafts yet another; "hill women" posing together, and in action cutting grass; men with carts bringing "apples" to market; two men and a boy at the "Cow Temple"-with a cow; Indian schoolchildren and their teacher, &c. On the other hand, the photographs also show some European-style buildings, bungalows, clothing and pursuits of the British, including teaching at "native" schools, being carried (while holding a parasol) by native rickshaw bearers, at their schools, riding horses, etc. ~~ In addition to the photographs of the Subcontinent, this album includes some taken in England, Wales and Ireland (Dorset, Albrighton, Craigside, "Mary Knowle" house, Broadchalk, County Down, Llandudno, Newcastle, Kilheel, Mildmay, Great Tew, Berskwell, and Wareham). Also in this group are a large photograph of a revival meeting and several images of nurses, posing together, or with clinic patients, or (in two large photos) a nurse alone on a lawn posing with a kitten and a dog. There are also some portraits and group portraits. Finally, we see two photos taken in Greece and several taken in Switzerland (Gstaad, on way to Chamry, etc., a couple of them featuring people frolicking on the ice).

A Brief Record of The Advance of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force

Cairo: produced by the Government Press and Survey of Egypt,, 1919. under the Command of General Sir Edmund H. H. Allenby. July 1917 to October 1918. Compiled from Official Sources and Published by The Palestine News. Quarto. Original sand-coloured cloth, spine lettered and decorated in black, front cover lettered in black, drab grey-green endpapers. Linen-mounted photographic portrait frontispiece of Allenby (with facsimile signature), 56 coloured plates (complete: plate 1 explanation of symbols used & 55 campaign and operational maps). Binding a little soiled and marked, some wear to extremities, inner hinges split but sound. First edition, first impression, more commonly found in buff paper wrappers, O'Brien commenting that only "a few copies" were bound in cloth, scarce in this state. A "collaborator's copy" bearing the name of Corporal E. W. Grater on the official compliments slip pasted to the front free endpaper, which is signed by the editor Lieutenant-Colonel Harry Pirie-Gordon. Grater is not a common name but is most commonly found in Devon. A number of battalions of the Devonshire Regiment served in Egypt, in particular the 2/4th Battalion Territorial Force which saw a number of actions as part of 75th Division of the EEF. We have found that a Private Arthur William D. Grater was killed in action on the Western Front in late September 1918 while serving with the 1/5th Devonshires. A Brief Record is a thorough account of the advance of the EEF from July 1917 and the end of October 1918, containing many articles, two of which are by T. E. Lawrence (though unattributed) which, along with the reports in the Arab Bulletin and The Times, are Lawrence's first published accounts of the Arab campaign. The Preface states that this record was created so that "members of that Force may be able to take home with them an acceptable account of the great advance in which they played a part".

        Poems.

Richmond: Printed & published by L. & V. Woolf at The Hogarth Press,, 1919. Octavo. Single quire sewn, bound into the original hand painted Omega wallpaper wrappers, with white paper title label to the front wrapper printed in black. Housed in a quarter black morocco foplding box. Wrappers brittle as always, and with some minor loss at the corners, a little cracking at the fold and the odd crease. However a most superior copy of a catastrophically vulnerable - dare I say amateurish - production. First edition, first impression, one of fewer than 250 copies hand-printed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. One of the quintessential hand-printed Hogarth Press publications cobbled together from oddments of wallpaper, decorated in the Omega style with streaks and splashes of paint. Perfect in its way and very uncommon in this condition.

» (PROUST Marcel, op. cit., t.XXII, p. 156-157) Provenance : Bibliothèque Heilbronn (ex-libris). [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition on current paper despite a third edition of mention. Precious autograph signed by Marcel Proust to Rene Boylesve. Our copy is presented in a flap holster-shirt khaki demiu morocco, flat spine slightly thinned with golden bibliophile indications tail marbled paper boards inside almond green paper.
