        A ROYAL PRISONER

New York: Brentano's, 1918. First U.S. edition. A very good plus copy, foxing to cut edges, mild foxing to end papers, slight spine lean, very mild rubbing to corners and spine ends in a good dust jacket, large chips to spine ends which also affect the front and rear panels at the corners, loss along top front edge, loss along corners of rear panel, front panel is largely complete. First English translation of the Fantomas novel first published in France as Un Roi Prisonnier de Fantomas (1911). Fantomas is a character from French pulp literature who appeared in 32 volumes written by Souvestre and Allain, followed by another eleven volumes by Allain after the death of Souvestre. Fantomas is an arch-criminal who plots elaborate and horrible crimes; he is pursued by a policeman named Juve. At the time of publication they were immensely popular in France.

        Growing Pains

B.W. Huebsch, New York 1918 - First edition. Sunning and foxing to the papercovered boards, else very good, lacking the dustwrapper. The author's first book, a volume of poetry, Inscribed to Vachel Lindsay on the front fly: "To Vachel with Christmas love, from Jean." Tipped to the bottom of the page is a (possibly homemade) Christmas card dated 1918 from the author's husband, the poet Louis Untermeyer, amusingly Inscribed (and referencing Lindsay's book: *The Chinese Nightingale and Other Poems*): "To A Chinese Nightingale from A -- Oh, a lyric Jewsharp.         RNAS Photograph Album. 1915-1918 Single volume album, bolt bound, folio, brown quarter morocco over green cloth boards. Minor rubbing and edgewear, strong, sharp and solid.

176 high quality images, many of them full page.(8"x10" or thereabouts) depicting a wide array of military aviation subjects; the majority being R.N.A.S. Subjects, primarily aeroplane types, crash scenes, dirigible and balloon testing, salvaging of German aviation equipment, a multitude of scenes showing the assembly, flying and inspection of a variety of seaplane types including the insanely imposing Curtiss Wanamaker triplane, a flock of Sopwith Camels, Short Dover bombers (being put through their paces at the RNAS base in Malta, crashing frequently and occasionally soaring majestically through the clouds), images of officers and men at Felixstowe Seaplane Experimental Station (although for the duration of WW1 seaplanes were referred to as "hydro-aeroplanes"), on base at Malta, torpedo testing at Calshot (Southampton) and where I believe to be Coudekerque in France, one of several French staging posts for the RNAS (both the RNAS and the better known army air wing the Royal Flying Corps were incorporated into what became The Royal Air Force in 1918). Also several images that I believe to be of the RNAS base at Long Island in the Gulf of Smyrna, including the aftermath of shelling by Turkish artillery. Clearly several of the more experimental approaches are intended to improve the range of fighter escorts for larger aircraft, several images show a Curtiss seaplane (A "Baby America" in RNAS parlance), with a Bristol Scout fighter secured to the upper wing as an attempt at "parasite" fighter cover, also depicted are several of the ill fated attempts to launch fighter planes by dropping them from airships and balloons, which on at least two occasions resulting in the deaths of the pilots. An extended description/images available upon request.

Illustrirte Zeitung. Octavo. c. 400 pages Original Softcover. From the library and personal archive of irish photographer John Minihan. John Francis Alexander Heath-Stubbs OBE (9 July 1918 26 December 2006) was an English poet and translator, known for his verse influenced by classical myths, and the long Arthurian poem Artorius (1972). Heath-Stubbs was born in London, and educated at Bembridge School and Queen's College, Oxford. He co-edited Eight Oxford Poets in 1941, with Sidney Keyes and Michael Meyer, and helped edit Oxford Poetry in 194243. Held the Gregory Fellowship of Poetry at Leeds University (195255) and he had professorships in Alexandria (195558) and Ann Arbor, Michigan (1960-61). He taught at the College of St Mark and St John in Chelsea (196272), as well as at Merton College, Oxford for twenty years from 1972. He lived for a time in the 1950s at Zennor in Cornwall. Translated, among others, Sappho, Horace, Catullus, Hafiz, Verlaine, and most notably Giacomo Leopardi. He was a representative figure of British poetry in the early 1950s, editing the poetry anthology Images of Tomorrow (1953) and, with David Wright, the Faber Book of Twentieth Century Verse, among others. He was elected to the RSL in 1954, awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry 1973, and appointed OBE in 1989. Although afflicted by blindness from the 1960s, and completely without sight from 1978, he continued to write almost to the end. Ibycus: A Poem by John Heath-Stubbs, documentary film was made by the Chilean director Carlos Klein in 1997. His diction was strong, yet subtle. Running through his work, like that of most romantic poets, was a nostalgia for "classicism". He was consciously literary, and his work was elaborately wrought rather than spontaneous, so it was not the kind of poetry likely to have mass appeal. However, his devotion to the craft of poetry makes his work impressive. Few writers of his time had a deeper knowledge of the English language, or cared for it more devotedly. (Wikipedia)

[Photo Album]: Female Student at Lincoln University of Missouri, 1918

[Jefferson City, Missouri. 1918]. Oblong octavo commercial album. Album covers perished, first leaf detached and laid in, pages brittle, good only; the images are well-preserved and about very good. 85 gelatin silver snapshot images in adhesive mounts. Various sizes from 1" x 1.25" to 4.25" x 2.75", some of the margins of the photos have been trimmed, others have been cut into ovals or other shapes for aesthetic reasons. Many prints are captioned, identifying locations and persons shown. A single print with a date of 1918, one with an African-American soldier in a WWI uniform, and another shows a Nash automobile matching circa-1918 models, thus our attribution of the date. An album of views compiled by a female student at Lincoln University, an historically black college in Jefferson City, Missouri. While the images are well-captioned, as usual the compiler's name is unclear (captioned as "me"), although she might have been from Oklahoma, as a few are labeled "Okla. girls" or Okla. girls & boys." Other images are of well-dressed female and male students lounging in a variety of poses both on and off campus, An image of two young women seated with their fingers laced over their knees is captioned "We are vamping kids." Others show a group of women on an outdoor staircase labeled "On Lincoln University farm." Several of the pictures identify teachers or professors, both black and white. There are images of young men next to automobiles, of students playing croquet, one showing a group of women climbing Pike's Peak, presumably.Lincoln was founded in 1866 by African-American Civil War veterans of the 62nd and 65th Regiments United States Colored Troops Infantry (USCT). A rare visual record with content on early women's education at an important black university. .

A Short History of The Irish Volunteers. [Signed and Inscribed Association copy]. With a Preface by Eoin MacNeill.

Dublin, The Candle Press. 1918 - First and only edition. Volume 1 (all that was ever published). 12.5 cm x 18 cm. IX, 205 pages. Original Hardcover in Mylar. Very good condition. Inscribed by Bulmer Hobson to his friend Eimar Ultan O'Duffy: "Eimear O'Duffy from his friend Bulmer Hobson". A remarkable association - very rare ! John Bulmer Hobson (14 January 1883 – 8 August 1969) was a leading member of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) before the Easter Rising in 1916. Though he was a member of the IRB which had planned the Rising, he opposed its being carried out, and attempted to prevent it. He swore Patrick Pearse into the IRB in late 1913. [Wikipedia] Eimar Ultan O'Duffy (29 September 1893 – 21 March 1935) was born in Dublin and educated at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire and at University College Dublin. He and Bulmer Hobson caused disaster to the plans for thd 1916 Easter Rising when they told Eoin MacNeill that the Rising was planned for the next week; MacNeill, nominal head of the Irish Volunteers, reacted by sending messengers around the country to call off the manoeuvres which were the cover for the Rising, and advertising in newspapers to cancel them. O'Duffy and Hobson went to the North. [Wikipedia]

How They Went To School [Illustrated by the author]. OUTSTANDING COPY IN SOLANDER CASE

Blackie and Son, 1918. Oblong 8vo., [Second Edition?], with a fine coloured frontispiece, 23 charming coloured plates and pictorial endpapers in blue, child's pencilled inscription on blank preliminary recto; original paper boards, coloured illustration (repeated as first plate) mounted on upper board) skilfully rebacked in green cloth to style, boards very lightly frayed without significant loss, an outstanding, virtually spotless copy housed in custom-made green cloth solander case with back lettered in gilt. Arguably the finest work for children written and illustrated by Praeger. It was first published by Blackie in 1903 (see BL 12812.a.1) with a second printing in 1918 (BL 12802.aa.11). There was apparently a later US edition published by Stokes in New York. The fact that this copy is published in Blackie's 'Tiny Tots' series inclines us to the view that this is the work's second appearance (1918). Sophia Rosamund [not 'Rosamond' as here printed] Praeger (1867-1954) was the younger sister of the naturalist Robert Lloyd Praeger. Born in Holywood, Co. Down, she was educated at Sullivan School, the Belfast School of Art and the Slade in London. Renowned for her work as children's writer and illustrator, and also as a sculptor of international fame, she was appointed President of the Ulster Academy and received the MBE in 1927. THIS WORK IS EXTREMELY SCARCE IN ANY EDITION. Its survival in this condition (now protected in solander case) is extraordinary and makes this a quite outstanding copy.

        Poems

London: Humphrey Milford,, 1918. now first published. Edited with notes by Robert Bridges Poet-Laureate. Octavo. Original Holland boards, title label to spine. Portrait plates, and facsimiles of manuscript and signatures. Title label a little tanned, dust soiling to top edge, gutter somewhat cracked between signatures C and D, but an excellent copy, sound, clean and fresh. First edition, one of only 750 copies printed, of which 50 were first given away prior to sale (it took until 1928 to sell them all). Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) published very few poems in his lifetime and destroyed many of his early writings in a crisis of faith - he had been received into the Roman Catholic faith by Cardinal Newman himself in 1866, and in 1868 made a bonfire of his juvenilia. It was only decades after his death that, collected and largely designed by Hopkins's friend and admirer Robert Bridges, this "sensitive, handsome, and almost complete small edition" (ODNB) was published. Contemporary reviews were mixed though some were stridently positive, such as Theodore Maynard: "A shy mid-Victorian priest, writing while Tennyson, Swinburne and Patmore led their various schools, was more modern than the most freakish modern would dare to be... He is the last word in technical development." Sales were slow and it had only just sold out by 1930, when "a second edition was called for by the poetry public who were demanding new, difficult poetic voices. Advocated especially by I. A. Richards, F. R. Leavis, William Empson, and Michael Roberts, so that his poems appeared in general and modernistic anthologies, followed by university and school syllabuses, Hopkins had suddenly become a popular modern poet." Notwithstanding the long time coming, this single volume now ranks as one of the most important in influential poetry collections published in the century.

        The Imprisoned Freeman.

George Sully and Co. New York (1918) - First Edition. Crime novel not listed in Hubin exploring the life of a young American and his "experience with the terrible and utterly unjust dealings of 'the law'.courageously exposing the real significance of some of our laws which admit of the perpetration of atrocities". The novel itself revolves around the false arrest of a young man who appeared to be part of a highway robbery but who was actually only an onlooker at the wrong place at the wrong time. He is brought to trial and sentenced to ten years in prison, which he serves until his untimely death. Interesting novel investigating both the perpetration of a crime as well as the injustices of the American court system. This copy warmly inscribed and signed by Woodruff at front free endpaper. A Very Good tight copy with spotting to top edge of boards, in Very Good plus scarce color illustrated dustjacket, with light shelf wear and small chip at lower spine end. 0.0 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
