Blatch the daughter of suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who followed in her mother's footsteps by also becoming a leader in the late 19th/early 20th C. women's movement, a writer and an advocate for labor reform. Blatch is credited with reviving & modernizing a suffrage movement which, by the beginning of the 20th century, was listless & flagging; she is also credited with motivating its evolution from a mostly middle & upper class movement to one which exhibited a concern for rights of working women, primarily by her 1907 launching of the Equality League of Self- Supporting Women which held open-air meetings & inaugurated the first suffrage parades. & & Blatch's style was radical in nature, combining a militant civil disobedience with political activism. The synergy generated her personal energy, daring & political savvy spurred the Suffrage movement on, aiding it in achieving its goal of enfranchising American women with the 1920 passage of the Constitution's 19th Amendment.& & With the coming of WWI, Blatch directed her formidable personality & energies to aiding the war effort, and this book was written in such a spirit- it describes the European female contribution to fighting the Hun, & exhorts their American counterparts to do no less [NAW, Vol. I]. .         The World Crisis: The Aftermath, 1918-1928

This is a first edition, first printing in dust jacket of the fifth book in Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War, titled "The World Crisis".  This volume deals with the postwar years 1918 to 1928. Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual books between 1923 and 1931. Today, jacketed first editions are remarkably scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so than their British counterparts. This copy is near-fine in a very good minus dust jacket.  The russet cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners, bright gilt, and nicely rounded spine.  As is expected with a jacketed copy we note no toning of the spine and only trivial wear at extremities.  The contents remain crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks.  We note only some age-toning to the untrimmed fore edge and some dust soiling to the top edge.  The dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the original $5.00 front flap price.  The jacket has light overall edge wear and minor chipping, with losses to a maximum depth of .25 inch at the spine ends, a .5 inch triangular chip at the upper rear face, and a .75 inch deep closed tear at the upper front face.  The spine is modestly and evenly toned with a faint stain at the tail.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.1(IV).a, Woods/ICS A31(aa), Langworth p.103

Views of Thessaloniki and a panorama of Lake Dojran, and surrounding area

Macedonia: , 1918. Landscape octavo "album" of ten grey paper leaves with wraps of the same paper, card reinforcement strips at the "spine" edges, held together three brass paper-fasteners; together with an extensive photographic panorama comprised on 8 panels hinged with linen and opening 1800 mm. Album contains ten original aerial photographs (171 × 117 mm) mounted, of the area around Thessaloniki, inked captions opposite; panorama shows the lake and the overlooking hills. Wraps a little creased, and a touch sunned at the margins; one or two panels of the panorama also creased, and with a few short splits, but overall very good. An extremely interesting assemblage, the album including five images of the city of Thessaloniki, graphically showing the "fire area" from the previous year's disastrous conflagration, the harbour and the river Vardar with French destroyers, and the aerodrome "with the British hospital in its usual fool position"; and the panorama offering a sweeping vista across Lake Dojran and the surrounding plain. The panorama has a War Office label identifying the image as "Sal Grec Avancé … taken on 1.1.18 at 0700 hrs … angle of view approx. 150°". This was the scene of the Battle of Dojran, 18-19 September 1918, where a combined British/Greek push was repulsed by the Bulgarians with heavy casualties just ten days before the Armisitce of Thessaloniki.

        Autographed Letter Signed

1918. unbound. Outstanding autographed letter signed "Dunsany" with exceptional literary content, 3 pages, 4to. Nov. 5, 1918, War Office, on his embossed coat of arms letterhead. Written while he was still a Captain in the Royal Marines, injured, and briefly assigned to the War Department, to a fellow author, in part: " To thank anyone adequately for a work of art is beyond the scope of a letter, for art has no boundaries and there is something very finite about the Royal Mail...a gift of poetry is no ordinary gift...the first poem in it astonished me when I first saw it. I thought it a magnificent sonnet and think so still...for it is the first poem...and you named the book after it...and the rear-guard of your sonnet is, I think, as well chosen as your van-guard...marching behind the sun with just that air of sadness lit with triumph...which comes very well at the end. Of special note: Dunsany wrote this letter while still a Captain in the British Army and he uses military clichés when evaluating the sonnet. There is a little weakness at the center folds otherwise very good. According to autograph dealer and author Charles Hamilton: "Though you will not have any trouble locating a Lord Dunsany letter, finding one with literary content will be quite difficult".

        Geist der Utopie.

München und Leipzig, Duncker & Humblot, 1918. Lex 8vo. Original dark grey-brown paper binding, printed in gold on front wrapper and spine. A tear across spine, crudely repaired with tape, also to front hinge. Apart from the spine, a fine and fresh copy. Old owner's name to title-page. 445 pp.. The rare first edition of Bloch's first major work, "The Spirit of Utopia", an expressionalist main work, which attempts to unite Marxism with Jewish-Christian messianism. The hugely influential German philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) was born as the son of Jewish parents in Ludwigshafen. He studied philosophy, physics, German and music in Munich and Würzburg and later became a main figure in Neomarxism. His first book, "Geist der Utopie" was written while Bloch was in exile in Switzerland during the First World War, and in this seminal work we find the cornerstones of his later so influential philosophy. In the "Spirit of Utopia", Bloch unites Marxism Jewish-Christian messianism by the common utopian element of both views: Hope, and faith in the fact that the world will and can become a better place. Bloch here set out to defend the attempts of humankind throughout history to create a humane world order, against the determinist socialism that viewed socialism as the inevitable result of history. With Marx and with the love and morality of religion, Bloch places man (that thinks of the common good) at the centre of his thinking as well as the metaphysical ideas of that which is not yet, but which can become. And thus he creates the spirit of utopia, due to which man can make the world a better place. This massive work of art begins with the powerful words: "What now? It is enough. Now we have to begin. Life has been put in our hands. In itself it has already become empty long ago. It staggers senselessly around, but we stand firm, and thus we want to be its Faustus and its ends." (P.9).The work was viewed as attacking the traditional Marxism of the time, and thus it was very controversial but also became hugely influential in the development of social liberation. Bloch is now considered one of the most undogmatic Marxists of the past century, and he influenced later political and philosophical thinkers enormously. Adorno himself cited this text of Bloch as having been transformative for his intellectual life, and as stated on the wrapper of the English translation, "When this work was first published, it had a profound effect on major thinkers and artists in Weimar Germany. A poetical philosophical treatise with unusual insights into culture and political commentary, Bloch' s book laid the groundwork for thinkers like Adorno and Benjamin." (Jack Zipes, University of Minnesota). This rare highly expressionist work consists of 445 pages of non-dogmatic strongly expressionistic and very influential recipes on and analyses of how man does and should behave in the humane world. "But in return, we paint like savages again, in the best sense, in the sense of the primordial, the restless, unconcerned, concerned. For this is more or less how the dancing-mask was carved. This is more or less how primitive man shaped his fetishes, if only the simple need to express oneself should again be the same" ("Aber dafür malen wir auch wieder wie die Wilden, im besten Sinn des Frühen, Unruhigen und Barbarischen genommen. So ungefähr wurde auch die Tanzmaske geschnitzt, so ungefähr baute sich der primitive Mensch seinen Fetisch zurecht, sollte auch nichts als die Not des Aussprechenmüssens wieder dieselbe geworden sein."). (P. 19).The work was much re-written, and the first editions differs from all later editions

        MOKUGO NIHONGASHU

1918 - ASAI Chu^. MOKUGO NIHONGA SHU^. Kyoto: Unso^do^, (1909) 1927. Printed paper covers, tassle bound. This tall 4to sized volume (37 x 25.5 cm) which is an epitome of Asai Chu^'s "Japanese-style" painting is a companion to the MOKUGO TOAN-SHU^, which focussed on his design work. Asai is famous as one of the most important Japanese Western-style painters of the the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was also an accomplished tradition painter aswell, as this study shows. In the early years of this century after his return from several years in France and before his premature death in 1907, Asai taught design and painting in Kyoto and influenced some of the most important Japanese artists of the later 20th century. This work, published posthumously by his friends, is masterfully printed by Unso^do^ and includes 8 pages of color woodblock prints after his paintings and 37 pages of collotypes. This copy has been well loved - the covers are quite worn and there is a bit of thumbing and soiling internally. Nonetheless, a very scarce and important work on a neglected aspect of Asai Chu's work. This is the second printing of this work, but Unso^do^ printing runs were notoriously small.

        MOKUGO NIHONGASHU

1918. ASAI Chu^.

        A Farewell to Arms

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION of arguably Hemingway's greatest work. "A Farewell to Arms made Hemingway a famous author. Published just as he passed his thirtieth birthday, it brought him the kind of public and critical acclaim he had been seeking since he had decided, in the aftermath of his wounding in 1918, to become a writer. During the ten-year interim, he had worked effectively as a foreign correspondent and then abandoned that career to devote all his energy to fashioning the understated and pared-away prose style that was his most important legacy to twentieth-century literature" (Donaldson, New Essays on A Farewell to Arms). New York: Charles Scribner's, 1929. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. First issue, with no disclaimer in book and 'Katherine' instead of 'Catherine' on dust jacket flap. Book near-fine with just a few smudges to cloth; dust jacket with some toning and rubbing to spine, some soiling to rear panel and light edgewear. A very good copy of a book that is notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition.

        The Hand of the Potter

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1918. First edition. Rodick was a lawyer and historian who published several books on legal subjects. He is not mentioned in Swanberg's biography of Dreiser, but there is evidence in the Dreiser papers at U. Penn that Rodick at one time attempted to publish a biography of Dreiser. His manuscript was rejected at least twice by Donald Friede, and there is no evidence that it was ever published elsewhere. Octavo (20cm); linen-backed boards; dustjacket; 209pp. Presentation inscription from Dreiser to Burleigh Rodick on title page, dated 1923. Board edges and spine ends rubbed; scarce jacket lightly soiled, with a small area of restoration at crown. A quite presentable copy, nicely inscribed.

        Prelude

Richmond: Printed and Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press,, [1918]. Octavo. Original blue yapp wrappers, titles to upper wrapper in black. Housed in a blue cloth folding case. Spine faded and chipped with professional repairs, wrapper frayed and chipped as is usually the case, but the contents are unusually fresh. A very good copy. First edition, sole printing. One of 300 copies hand printed by the Woolfs. In theory this is the second issue since the Ferguson woodcut does not appear on the upper wrapper. But we believe that the tiny number known to exist with the woodcut were trials as Virginia Woolf vetoed the illustration. Rare.
