Two autograph letters signed, and one signed and inscribed portrait (vintage photograph).

Zurich, November 1, 1918 and January 6, 1919.. Large 4to. Altogether 1½ pp. on 2 ff. Portrait in-8vo.. Two letters to an Irish admirer - perhaps an editor - recounting the publishing history of "Ulysses" in real time, forwarding clippings on "A Portrait of the Artist" with the first letter (not included) and an inscribed photograph with the second, and mentioning his eye ailment; together with that photographic portrait, inscribed by Joyce. The first letter reads, in part: "As I have been so long absent from Ireland you must forgive me if I say that I am afraid I have forgotten you. Allow me however to thank you for your very friendly letter and for your kind words about my book Ulysses. Eight installments have now appeared in the Little Review of New York but unfortunately the Egoist (London) cannot find any printer to set up these chapters. They have also been delayed by my illness this year - a grave malady of the eyes to which I am subject. I beg you to convey my thanks also to your friend whose encouragement I appreciate very much. I have asked my friend Mr. Pound to send you some other chapters, if he has them [...]". - In the second letter, Joyce writes: "I enclose a snapshot taken by a friend of mine after my illness. I hope it will serve your purpose. With good wishes for the coming year | Sincerely yours | James Joyce". - The photograph, an uncommon portrait showing the writer sporting his 1918 full beard, resting his head upon his right arm, leaning on an armchair and looking straight at the camera, is inscribed in the lower margin "with compliments | James Joyce | 6/1/[1]919". Photographic presentations by Joyce are rare. - Slightly soiled and wrinkled; small tears in foldings, traces of former mounting.

        Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins

London: Humphrey Milford. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 750 COPIES, of Hopkins's first book. "After Hopkins' death, Robert Bridges began to publish a few of Hopkins's most mature poems in anthologies, hoping to prepare the way for wider acceptance of his style. By 1918, Bridges, then poet laureate, judged the time opportune for the first collected edition. It appeared but sold slowly. Not until 1930 was a second edition issued, and thereafter Hopkins' work was recognized as among the most original, powerful, and influential literary accomplishments of his century; it had a marked influence on such leading 20th-century poets as T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and C. Day Lewis" (John Cowie Reid). London: Humphrey Milford, 1918. Octavo, original half buckram over original blue boards; custom box. Complete with two portraits of Hopkins and two plates of facsimile manuscripts. Some spots to binding (mostly around edges). Browning to spine with a little rubbing to spine label. A few neat pencil marks in a few margins (noting, perhaps, favorite poems) and some neat scholarly notes in pencil on the blank free endpapers. A very good copy of a rare and important work.

        LOS HERALDOS NEGROS.

Lima 1918 - 12x18.5. pp. 3 - 153pp. 2h. The Quebec Bridge over the St. Lawrence River near the City of Quebec on the Line of the Canadian National Railways. Report of the Government Board of Engineers

Text vol.: Photographic frontis. & numerous photographic illus., diagrams, & tables in the text. 259 pp. Plate vol.: 3 p.l. of text & 111 folding lithographed plates. Two vols. Large oblong 4to, orig. cloth (a little spotted). N.p.: 1918. The Quebec Bridge, spanning the St. Lawrence about nine miles above Quebec, replaced an earlier structure designed by Thomas Cooper in 1900 to carry the railway over the river. On 29 August 1907 it collapsed without warning in a matter of only fifteen seconds, killing several men and making bridge history as the most spectacular structural failure to that time. A photograph of the ruins shows the entire bridge virtually unrecognizable as such, the structure compressed into a compact mass of steel spaghetti. As a result of the investigation, the detailing of compression members in particular and bridge engineering in general were raised to a much higher level of scientific analysis and design. The second bridge, designed by Ralph Modjeski and completed in 1917, was its successor. A cantilever structure, it was based on the Forth Bridge, and it too had its problems. The 5000 ton center span collapsed into the river on 11 September 1916 as it was being hoisted vertically into position. One of the photographs in the book shows it at the precise moment when it struck the water. A new span was successfully lifted almost exactly a year later, the final pins being driven in on 20 September 1917. On 17 October the first train crossed the bridge; a regular freight service began on 3 December; and on 22 August 1919 the bridge was formally opened by the Prince of Wales. With a span of 1800 feet between the two main piers it was the largest of its kind in the world. This is the final report of the Board of Engineers, headed by Ralph Modjeski, and it forms the definitive account of the bridge, with a survey of the historical background and the story of the earlier structure, followed by all the technical information of the new one. The text is amply supported by the working drawings and many excellent photographs of the earlier bridge, the two disasters, progress of construction, first train crossing, the official opening etc. Fine set. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. .

London: printed by Headley Brothers [for the family],, [c1920]. Octavo. Original fawn cloth-backed blue paper boards, lettered in black on the upper board. Portrait frontispiece and 2 other plates. A little rubbed, free endpapers quite browned and foxed, the text-block less so, a very good copy. First and only edition. Uncommon, COPAC has BL and Southampton only, OCLC adds just Toronto Public Library and Texas A & M. M.T. A.S.C., British East African Expeditionary Force. Prints the letter of condolence received from the sergeant's mess Dar-es-Salaam as an epilogue, "Our hardships out here have not been recounted by Reuter's Agency, but are known only to those undergoing them. Short food, bad water, excessive heat and exposure, coupled with lack of medical comforts, gave us our baptism of the tropics … Now at the completion of things generally, those that have "stuck it" are asked to continue "sticking it" until the inevitable happens, and one succumbs. A fortune of war that to you has meant a sacrifice, we again tender our deepest sympathy." Ownership inscription of E.F. Poulson to the front pastedown, 1940s army pay-book loosely inserted showing Poulson to have been a Mechanic Sergeant of 21 years service, and therefore in all likelihood a participant in events described. An emotive and desirable account of the campaign in East Africa.

Produced late in the First World War or soon after the armistice, the poster promoted the US Food Administration (USFA), led by Herbert Hoover, which was responsible for feeding most of Europe in the immediate aftermath of the war. The image depicts a European city in the background and a family in the foreground. A woman sits slumped over her dead or dying child, an empty bowl at her feet. The boy's father stands, fist clenched, a torch in the other hand, staring at the city. President Wilson's quote, 'Hunger breeds madness' and the image suggests anarchy if Europe is allowed to starve. Grebs (1877-1964), a native of Germany, was the San Francisco art director for Foster and Kleiser Co., which produced this poster for the USFA. He also taught commercial illustration at the California School of Fine Arts (alongside Maynard Dixon), lectured at Stanford, and later headed his own commercial graphics firm. Mounted on linen. A few small tears have been repaired in the margins. With a few small areas of abrasion where the surface was apparently cleaned, mostly in the printed border.

Heavenly Bridegrooms: An Unintentional Contribution to the Erotogenetic Interpretation of Religion

New York: n.p., 1918. Wraps. Very good. First separate edition. 8vo. 121,(1),3pp. Printed wraps. A fine copy. Originally published over seven issues of the Alienist and Neurologist between 1915 and 1917, Shroeder pulls together the writings of Ida C., the earthly wife of an angel (in her own words), who died 22 years previous to this publication. Considered an obscene sex manual by local authorities; Craddock was jailed on morality charges several times. But Aleister Crowley says no Magick library is complete without this title. A very good copy with only a race of wear to the spine. Housed in a custom leather-backed clamshell case. Rare.

        Dessins faits aux Armées

No place: no publisher, no date, , c.1918. Folio (410 × 333 mm). Original portfolio brown half cloth on marbled boards, gilt-printed label with Cubist design to the upper board. Signed limitation leaf, general title and first plate in outline and pochoir, 2 section titles, and 20 plates. Portfolio just a little rubbed at the extremities, lacking one tie, first few plates slightly rolled at the top edge, but overall very good. First edition, an edition of 120 copies, this one of 100 on Japon Impérial, with two plates in two states. Mare exhibited at the Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne where he became associated with his schoolboy friend Fernand Léger, Roger de La Fresnaye, Segonzac, Marinot and the Duchamps. In 1912 their Maison Cubiste created a sensation, and established Mare's career. During World War I he was one of the creators of the French camouflage section, and in 1916 he was seriously wounded while setting up observation posts. Following the war he established the Compagnie des Arts Français, and worked extensively as interior designer with the architect Louis Süe, becoming recognised one of the founders of Art Deco, and drawing numerous prestigious commissions including Jean Patou's home and the French Embassy at Washington. His health was weakened by having been gassed during the war, and for the last years of his life he concentrated on painting, retaining the Cubist style of his earlier years. He died of tuberculosis in 1932, aged just 47. This portfolio of highly stylish images drawn from his time with French and British armies at the front is extremely uncommon, just six locations on OCLC, only the Art Institute of Chicago and Brown outside of France, only two copies traced at auction.

Cairo: Survey of Egypt and Government Press, 1918. 1st Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. (Collectibles) LAWRENCE, T.E. ('Lawrence of Arabia'). A Short Note on the Design and Issue of Postage Stamps Prepared by the Survey of Egypt for His Highness Husein Emir & Sherif of Mecca & King of the Hejaz. Cairo, Egypt: Survey of Egypt and Government Press, 1918. Single Volume in original limp boards. 7 1/2 X 11 Inches. Housed in (assumed) original plain paper wrap. Amazingly scarce issue of this supremely collectible book by Lawrence of Arabia. An unnumbered and undedicated copy of the 200 copies printed in 1918. 'While he was going quietly nutty as a desk jockey in Cairo attached to Britian's Egyptian Survey in 1916 during World War I, T.E. Lawrence, not yet the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, worked on a project that became the symbolic first shot fired in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire... He designed and printed postage stamps.' (Credited to Stephen Gertz) The book is one of the most attractive in the philatelic genre. It describes in detail the aspects of the production process including paper, printing, inks, watermarks etc... All pages intact. Covers bright and clean. All nine stamps intact on second page of text as issued. Slight 1/4 inch closed tear to front fly. Paper wrap creased with several closed tears and chips at folds. Obviously a well cared example that exceeds the condition of any available for comparison that we can locate.

THEY SHALL NOT PERISH Campaign for $30, 000, 000 / American Committee for Relief in the Near East / Armenia - Greece - Syria - Persia

This the original lithograph printed by the American Lithographic Co. The image is a female with arm up holding a sword which is angled horizontally across the top of the image with a shield behind it. The figure has a helmet-like hat in red, white, and blue stars and stripes. The figure is clothed in a long dress with many folds. An American flag comes from the right of the figure around her back, then down and around a young girl who is clutching the legs of a female figure. The background is a dark charcoal, the background of the text at the bottom of the poster is a light grey. The main colors are white, cream, grey, soft blue, and a bright red and soft red. This poster was designed and executed by Douglas Volk. His name is printed in written characters on the poster with a 1918 date. His monogram is above the plate signature, in white. (Douglas Volk b. 1856 - d. 1935. He studied under Jean-Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He was professor and and the first director at the Minneaolis School of Fine Arts in the years before and after 1890. He was a portrait artist, some with detailed landscape backgrounds. He was also well known for historical paintings. There are three horizontal and one vertical fold marks - gentle, soft folds. The image is in fine condition, the edges of the poster have some wear - three corners are chipped (nickel size) . There is a closed tear a little above the center on the left that extends into the image about 3/4 of an inch, then in an up direction for about two inches - closed tear. There is an edge chip at the top - about 3/4" into the margin from the edge. There are two pin punctures in the margin about 1 inch away from the image - top left corner. The paper is generally crisp and clean. No smudges, no foxing. The poster is covered with an acetate. The acetate and lighting creates a vertical glare that is not present on the print. All folds are soft folds, not hard creased. The image size is 37" h x 24 7/8" w. The outside dimensions of the poster are 40" h x 30" w. The poster will be carefully packaged. ; -
