The Munitions Miracle

London: National War Aims Committee, 1918. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. Near fine. This exceptionally rare speech pamphlet contains the speech of 25 April 1918 Churchill delivered in the House of Commons as Minister of Munitions during the First World War. This is the only copy we know of in private ownership. Churchill began the First World War as the powerful First Lord of the Admiralty, but was scapegoated for the Dardanelles disaster and forced out in May 1915. By November 1915, Churchill was serving at the Front, spending part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. His May 1916 return to London saw "no upsurge in his political fortunes" and left him criticizing the war effort from an unaccustomed "position of political weakness and personal isolation" much as he would two decades later on the eve of the Second World War. (Gilbert, Vol. III) By May 1917 there was growing parliamentary opposition to the Government. "Lloyd George knew that Churchill's aim was to return to a position of authority, but that if no place were found for him, he would continue to attack the Government's war policy." (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.15) Whether for Churchill's talents, desire to silence him, or both, Lloyd George began to consult and consider Churchill. Newspaper editorials inveighed against Churchill and several Ministers vigorously objected. Nonetheless, on 16 July 1917 Churchill accepted the post of Minister of Munitions. True to form, he proved "eager to involve himself in as wide a range of discussions as possible" (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.32) and implemented major reorganization of his Ministry. By April 1918, Churchill commanded an optimized Ministry and was asserting exactly the sort of influence his detractors resented. Returning from a tour of the French Front to the onset of a major German offensive, on 18 April Churchill sent his Prime Minister a lengthy memorandum analyzing the strategic decisions which would have to be taken if the offensive continued. (Gilbert, Vol. IV, p.106) A week later, on 25 April, Churchill spoke for an hour and a half in the House of Commons about the military crisis and munitions production, offering what he called 'a fairly good report' detailing the Ministry's ability to replace and often exceed losses of guns, aircraft, and tanks. Churchill specifically praised the nearly three quarters of a million women employed under his Ministry at the time. "It is a striking fact that more than nine-tenths... of the whole manufacture of the shells... of the British Artillery, are due to the labours of women..." Concluding, perhaps Churchill spoke for himself as much as for his Ministry: "instead of quarrelling, giving way as we do from time to time to moods of pessimism and irritation, we ought to be thankful that if such trials and dangers were destined for our country we are here to share them, and to see them slowly and surely overcome." Despite persistent detractors, Churchill would prevail in his difficult return to power, assuming control of the War Office as Secretary of State for War and Air by January 1919. This pamphlet publication of Churchill's 25 April 1918 House of Commons speech was issued by the National War Aims Committee, apparently as No. 1 in their "British Effort Series". Like Churchill, it is a remarkable survivor. Ronald Cohen notes only institutional copies in his Bibliography. The pamphlet is printed on off-white pulp stock, measures 6.5 x 3 inches, is bound in wire-stitched self-wrappers, and is 16 pages. Pages 2-15 bear Churchill's speech. Recognizing the women Churchill praised, the front cover illustration is a woman beside an enormous artillery shell. Condition is near-fine, complete with no loss or tears and virtually no wear. Both binding staples remain firmly attached, showing only modest rust. The covers are slightly age-toned and lightly soiled at the extremities. The contents remain clean and bright. We note no previous ownership marks. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A51, Woods A26.

        Murerplan der Stadt Zürich. Holzschnitt.

Preis in CHF: 1320.

1918. Sem [Gorsat (Goursat), Georges (1863-1934)]. Affaire Bola-Pacha: 68 Croquis d'Audience par Sem. [Paris: S.n., c. 1918]. 68 lithographic images on 24 sheets and a sheet of captions in a printed wrapper housed in a printed folder. 12-1/2" x 10." From a signed edition of 300 on Arches paper, this number 283. Light soiling and edgewear to outer folder, a few minor tears along fold lines, short minor tear to spine of inner folder, light stain to caption sheet, plates fine. * The Bolo Pasha affair involved a French traitor, Paul Bolo, who convinced the Egyptian Khedive (Viceroy), Abbas Hilmi, to sponsor an anti-war movement in France through the press using from German sources. (Granted the title Pasha by the Khedive, Bolo renamed himself Bolo Pasha.) Convicted of treason, he was executed by a firing squad in April 1918. Sem's caricatures portray the judge, defendant, witnesses and judges at various points in the trial. Gorsat, or Goursat, was a French caricaturist and illustrator active from the late nineteenth century to 1934. His lasting fame rests on his depictions of French ruling class and French high society during the Belle Epoque. EXILES

Richards , 1918. Richards , 1918. First edition. Bound in contemporary three quarter blue morocco by Douarin. Top edge gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the half title, "To Jacques Benoist-Mechin / James Joyce / 3.xi.921 Paris". Some browning to the page edges, joints a little worn, a very good copy indeed. Jaques Benoist-Mechin (1901-1983) was to become an influential French intellectual and man of letters as well as an important official in the Laval government. At the time he met Joyce, though, he was a young music student of twenty with a passion for contemporary literature and ideas, and Joyce's work in particular. He was one of Sylvia Beach's earliest regular customers at Shakespeare & Company, and so it was that he was asked by Beach to translate portions of Ulysses into French for a lecture by the celebrated French author and critic, Valery Larbaud at Adrienne Monnier's library. "He was young but serious and intelligent, and he could converse with older writers. Most importantly, he could read and appreciate the most difficult works in both languages, for he had spoken English during the first fourteen years of his life." (Fitch - Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation) Benoist-Mechin agreed on the condition that his contribution was to remain anonymous: his aristocratic father would not have approved of his association with such a controversial book. The translations were made from published portions from the Little Review, whilst Joyce was still making revisions and additions to the finished text. Joyce spent time with Benoist-Mechin in the back of Monnier's shop ironing out any difficulties that arose. The meetings had a significant effect on the final words of the novel, which in the draft Benoist-Mechin was translating from were "I will". The younger man argued that for the translation "oui" was a stronger and smoother ending. Following a day of discussion in which they dragged in all the world's great philosophers, Joyce agreed that not only would "the most positive word in the language" serve at the ending to the French translation, he would add it to his revisions of the English version. Occasional subsequent correspondence between to the two men exists, but their relationship was one of brief intensity, the evidence of which are the copies of Joyce's works (bought from Shakespeare & Company) bearing Joyce's presentation inscriptions. Collection of Photographs and Ephemera Relating to a Soldiers and Sailors Carnival and Field Day.

Los Angeles, 1918.. 15 loose black leaves with b/w photographs (mostly 8" x 10") and ephemera (letters, small advertising posters, telegrams, ticket stubs) adhered to rectos and versos; 20 photographs in all. Leaves quite brittle and chipped at the edges; some photographs a little wavy (from the adhesive) or creased, but for the most part clean, and always intelligible; large tear across one of the posters, fragile, but with no loss.. Centered around a Carnival and Field Day, this collection features photographs of, or correspondence from, some famous characters: Tom Mix (an actor in early Western movies, who performed at the event), F. W. Blanchard (an early Los Angeles developer, first president of the Hollywood Bowl, and director of the event), Miss Hessie Hallett and her horse Arabjay (performers), James D. Phelan (politician, civic leader, and banker, who contributed personnel to the event), Kaiser Wilhelm II (photographed in the form of an effigy hung at the event), and William Taft (who, via telegram, regrets that he cannot attend). Offers a cursory glance at the event's inner workings, with telegrams, special ticket stubs and lunch coupons for participants (offered by The Patriotic Mothers of Sons in Service), a copy of the program and list of organizers, and a typed financial statement. But the highlight - and focus - of the collection are the photographs of the beautiful horses that were featured in the rodeo events, races, and fancy mounts. A day-long extravaganza that included marching bands, military maneuvers, wrestling, boxing, tug-of-war, and more, this glimpse at a moment of grandstanding captures more than a singular event in California's (and America's) history, as whispers of the tumultuous time are discernable throughout.

        RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE

New York:: Grosset & Dunlap,, Before 1918.. New York:: Grosset & Dunlap,. Before 1918. An early reprint edition with illustrations by Douglas Duer and the frontispiece illustration reproduced as the dust jacket cover, as in the original Harper edition. SIGNED BY GREY in "Lackawaxen, Pa.," from where we understand he moved in 1918, so an early reprint. This title is considered by many critics to have played a significant role in shaping the formula of the popular Western genre. It tells the story of Jane Withersteen and her battle to overcome her persecution by members of her polygamous Mormon Church, a leader of which, Elder Tull, wants to marry her. Withersteen is supported by a number of Gentile friends, including Bern Venters and Lassiter, a famous gunman and killer of Mormons. It was made into a number of movies starting in 1918 with one starring William Scott and directed by Frank Lloyd; then again in 1925 with Tom Mix, 1931 with George O'Brien, 1941 with George Montgomery and on TV in 1996 with Ed Harris and Amy Madigan. This copy was OWNED BY THE MOVIE STAR AND BOOK COLLECTOR Jack Palance and has two bookplates attesting to this below Grey's signature. The book is very good with minor wear and the jacket has chipping and some tape on the outside across top inch of spine and extending onto the front and back covers. Still, scarce in any early jacket and signed by Grey.

[LARGE ARCHIVE OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS SHOWING THE BUILDING OF TWENTY-NINE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, INCLUDING THE MARK HOPKINS HOTEL, TEMPLE EMANU-EL IN SAN FRANCISCO, I. MAGNIN DEPARTMENT STORE, FOX AND LOEWS THEATERS, THE E.F. HUTTON BUILDING, AND OAKLAND SHIPYARDS; ALL OF THE PROJECTS BUILT BY THE CONTRACTING FIRM OF MacDONALD & KAHN]

[Several places in Northern California, including San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Emeryville, Fresno, Sacramento, and Stockton. [Several places in Northern California, including San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Emeryville, Fresno, Sacramento, and Stockton. 1918-1930].. 406 original photographic prints, 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches on average. Most prints mounted on linen, many with the ink stamp of the photographic firm on the verso. Plus an additional group of eighty-seven original photographic prints, 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches or smaller, showing miscellaneous projects and buildings. Some prints with some light wear or creasing, a few with edge wear and fraying of the linen mounts. A small number are stained in the image. On the whole, in very good condition. A remarkable collection of original photographic prints showing the progress of construction of more than two dozen projects in the greater San Francisco Bay Area in the 1920s. Among the notable buildings whose construction is documented herein are the famed Mark Hopkins Hotel on San Francisco's Nob Hill, the Temple Emanu-el (one of the two oldest Jewish congregations in San Francisco), various shipyard projects in the Port of Oakland, an I. Magnin Department Store, a notable Art Deco movie palace, factories, the E. F. Hutton headquarters, small Woolworth stores, Masonic and Scottish Rite temples, and much more. The collection gives a vast amount of visual information on construction in the Bay Area in the 1920s. The photographs also showcase the designs of a number of notable California architects. The photographs show the construction of the buildings over time through a series of images, usually spaced between a week or two weeks apart. As such, they are reminiscent of Eadweard Muybridge's series of pictures of the United States Mint in San Francisco under construction in the early 1870s, which were among the first to utilize photography to document a construction project. A few of the projects are represented by only a handful of images, but on average the span of time covers several months and shows the project from start to finish. The series on Congregation Emanu-el, for example, consists of twenty photographs showing the building of the Temple over eighteen months. Oakland's Fox Theater, which took a year to build, is shown in sixty photographs, many of them detailing the plaster work done on the Art Deco interior. The shipyard construction photographs are also quite detailed, giving a vivid understanding of the complex infrastructure required by the projects. Interestingly, no projects are noted as having been begun after the fall of 1929, likely a reflection of the effect of the great stock market crash of October 1929. These photographs were commissioned by the California contracting firm of MacDonald & Kahn, who are listed as the builders on each project. MacDonald & Kahn was a very active construction firm in California and the West in the early 20th century, building projects in northern and southern California, and participating in the construction consortium that built the Hoover Dam. They were prolific not only in commercial construction but also in public works. Along with the Hoover Dam, they worked on the Oakland Shipyards (included in this archive) and on the Fourth Street Viaduct project in Los Angeles. The images were taken by a variety of photographers in the Bay Area and Central Valley, and would have been used by the contractors to document the progress of each project over time. Most of the prints are backed by linen, many with the name of the photographic firm that took the images stamped on the verso. Most of the linen backings also contain a stub at the left edge or top of the print (depending on its orientation, landscape or portrait style), indicating that these prints were originally meant to be housed in binders of some sort. Information on the name of the project, the architect and builders, and the date of the photograph have been noted in a corner of the print itself. The photographs are often dated at one or two week intervals, showing the ebb and flow of construction over time. The earliest MacDonald & Kahn project represented here is the California Associated Raisin Company in Fresno, built in 1918. The latest are rather modest buildings done in the winter of 1929-30. The twenty-eight separate projects are as follow: 1) ATHENS ATHLETIC CLUB. Seventeen photographic prints. William Knowles was the architect on this project, built by MacDonald & Kahn. The location of the building was 12th and Clay Streets in Oakland. The photographer was Ford E. Samuel of Oakland, and the prints are dated from July 15, 1924 to June 15, 1925. The latest pictures show the building still under construction, with scaffolding on one side of the exterior, the first floor unfinished, and the building site surrounded by construction materials. 2) BOULEVARD THEATRE. Three photographic prints. This building, at San Bruno and Burrows in San Francisco, was designed by Reid Brothers. R.J. Waters and Co. of San Francisco took the photographs, which show the theatre in the early stages of construction, dated January 30 to February 13, 1927. The first photograph shows the lot as it was dug out, and the final two photographs show the steel structure of the building, the steel provided by Schrader Iron Works of San Francisco. The small MacDonald & Kahn site headquarters is shown in two of the prints. 3) BUTLER BROTHERS BUILDING. Thirteen photographic prints. Located in San Francisco, the Butler Brothers building was designed by Bliss & Fairweather. The images are dated from November 16, 1927 to May 18, 1928. The final two photographs show the six- story building from two different angles. 4) CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATED RAISIN COMPANY. Forty photographic prints. The prints are dated between March 15 and October 25, 1918 and were taken by the Laval photographic firm (later called Laval and Ninnis) of Fresno. One of the prints is by Gabriel Moulin of San Francisco, and shows the architect's rendering of the proposed plant, which was built in Fresno. The plan shows an ambitious multi-building complex, only one building of which was built. No architect is stated. 5) CALIFORNIA PACKING CORPORATION. Eleven photographic prints, measuring 7 x 17 inches on average. The prints are dated from October 11, 1924 to March 9, 1925. These large-scale, almost panoramic photographs show the construction of the California Packing Corporation's Plant Number 11 in Sacramento. No architect is stated, but the Chief Engineer was Philip Bush. The photographs were taken by the Hodson photographic firm. 6) CAPITAL THEATRE. Thirty-five photographic prints. The prints date from December 29, 1927 to January 28, 1929 and document in detail the construction of this large theater. The building was designed by Thomas W. Lamb and built by MacDonald & Kahn. The Waters Company of San Francisco documented the construction in a series of at least thirty-eight photographs, of which thirty-five are present here. 7) CONCRETE SHIPYARD, OAKLAND. Twenty-five photographic prints. Dated from June 27 to November 26, 1918, the photographs were taken by Mollers of Oakland. No architect or engineer is identified. Many of the photographs contain brief descriptive information in the print. The earliest photographs show the grading of the construction site and views of the shoreline. This was a massive construction project, and the photographs contain several interior views showing the huge shell of the building as well as the cafeteria, latrines, etc. 8) CONGREGATION EMANU-EL TEMPLE. Twenty photographic prints. Dated from August 19, 1924 to February 23, 1926, all but one of the photographs were taken by the Schoenfeld Studio of San Francisco. The temple was designed by architect Sylvian Schnaittacher, who was instrumental in designing many prominent buildings that went up in the years following the 1906 earthquake and fires. The temple is still in use in Presidio Heights, housing one of the two oldest Jewish congregations in California. 9) CONTINENTAL BAKING COMPANY. Nine photographic prints. The prints are dated from July 29, 1929 (showing much of the structure of the building already up) to an image of the completed building, dated October 29, 1929 (Black Tuesday, the date of the Wall Street crash). Bliss and Fairweather were the architects, and Waters Company took the photographs. 10) FINANCIAL CENTER BUILDING. Two photographic prints. The two prints are dated April 28, 1926 (showing the beginning of construction) and September 30, 1926 (the nearly completed building). The building, more than ten stories high, was advertised as being ready for occupancy on February 1, 1927. Fred Myers was the architect, and the photographs are by R.J. Waters & Co. 11) FOX THEATER. Sixty-four photographic prints. The photographs are dated from April 26, 1922 to April 12, 1923, and were taken by the Western Photo Company of Oakland. They show, in intricate detail, the year-long construction of this classic Art Deco theater in Oakland. The photographs show the interior and exterior work, including several images of the plaster being applied to the interior. This was the original Fox Theater in Oakland, located on Broadway and with more than 2500 seats. It was demolished in the 1960s. The architect is not identified. 12) ADDITION TO HALE BROTHERS. Ten photographic prints. The images are dated April 16, 1923 to October 7, 1926, and were taken by R.J. Waters & Co. George Taylor de Colmesnil was the architect. The final image is undated and shows the main building of this popular San Francisco department store. 13) MANN APARTMENTS. Eight photographic prints. Dated August 19 to December 23, 1922, the photographs are by R.J. Waters & Co. The architect is not identified. 14) HUTTON BUILDING. Nine photographic prints. These prints, taken by R.J. Waters & Co., show the construction of the San Francisco office of E.F. Hutton & Company, and are dated November 12, 1921 to April 1, 1922. Founded in San Francisco in 1904, E.F. Hutton was an important stock brokerage firm. Its original building was destroyed in 1906; this building is a stately, three- story Neoclassical structure. 15) I. MAGNIN & Co. BUILDING. Eleven photographic prints. The prints were taken by Waters Company, and show the construction of the I. Magnin store beside the Union Trust Company building at the foot of Grant Avenue, near Market and O'Farrell. The images are dated April 17 to July 5, 1929. Bliss and Fairweather were the architects. 16) KAHN'S DEPARTMENT STORE. Five photographic prints. Dated April 2 to June 23, 1923, the photographs show the beginning stages of the projected six-story addition to Oakland's largest department store. MacDonald & Kahn were the builders, and the photographs were taken by Western Photo and by C.L. Huntington. 17) KROEHLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Eleven photographic prints. The prints are dated September 3, 1926 to February 11, 1927. The building for the furniture manufacturer, designed by L.H. Nishkian, was located in the outskirts of San Francisco. R.J. Waters & Company took the photographs. 18) LOEW STATE THEATER. Seven photographic prints plus two related images. The images are dated September 27, 1920 to August 19, 1921. This theater is the only building in this grouping built in Los Angeles. A comment on the final image notes that the building was completed in nine months and seven days at a cost of $2.5 million. Reid Brothers were the architects. An additional image shows the Loew's Warfield Theater under construction, and another shows an architect's rendering of the Loew Union Square. 19) FINANCIAL CENTER BUILDING. Five photographic prints. The images are dated May 1, 1929 to June 6, 1930, and the photographer is unidentified. A comparatively small, single-story project, built by MacDonald & Kahn and identified only as the "Financial Center Building" in San Francisco. 20) MARK HOPKINS HOTEL. Eleven photographic prints. This series of photographs shows the construction of one of the most iconic buildings in San Francisco, the opulent Mark Hopkins Hotel on the top of Nob Hill. The building was designed by Charles Peter Weeks and William Peyton Day. The Schoenfeld Studio took the photographs, which are dated from March 16, 1926 (showing the steel beams of the structure already up) to an image of the completed building dated November 8, 1926. Signs placed around the construction site note that it was financed by Straus Bonds. 21) MASONIC TEMPLE. Twenty-one photographic prints. The photographs show the construction of this Masonic Temple in Stockton, California, and are dated from August 22, 1921 to May 1, 1922. Several of the images, taken by V. Covert Martin of Stockton, show the interior of the building, including meeting rooms and the auditorium. The architect was Carl Werner. 22) PACIFIC STATION. Thirty-two photographic prints. The photographs were taken by R.J. Waters & Co., and show construction on the building from October 14, 1924 to March 10, 1925, by which time it had been completed. Bliss & Faville were the architects. 23) PORT OF OAKLAND. Four photographic prints (one of them double-sheet). The photographs, taken by the Waters Company, show work done at the Port of Oakland by MacDonald & Kahn in the Spring of 1929. The double-sheet print shows a large two-story building in an advanced state of construction. 24) THOMAS DYEING & CLEANING. Five photographic prints. The photographs, by the Waters Company, show work done by MacDonald & Kahn on this four-story San Francisco building from January 30 to March 31, 1930. The architect was F.W. Dakin. 25) SCOTTISH RITE TEMPLE. Five photographic prints. The photographs date from October 17, 1926 to August 17, 1927, with a final photograph showing the completed building, dated on the verso January 9, 1928. R.J. Waters & Co. took the construction photographs, and Carl Werner was the architect. 26) WESTERN ELECTRIC. Thirteen photographic prints. The photographs show the construction of the Western Electric Company building in Emeryville, from March 26 to August 31, 1929. The architect is not identified. The photographs were taken by Waters Company. The final photograph shows a construction site very much in work. 27) WOOLWORTH COMPANY. Five photographic prints. The five pictures show the construction of a modest Woolworth's 5, 10, and 15 cent store in San Jose. The pictures, by George Jacob Kinze, date from August 12 to October 9, 1826. The final picture shows what appears to be a MacDonald & Kahn company truck being loaded with debris from the construction site. 28) WOOLWORTH COMPANY. Two photographic prints. These two pictures, dated April 18 and April 29, 1925, show the early stages of construction of a Woolworth's store in Stockton. The Logan Studio of Stockton took the photographs. 29) LESTER BUILDING. Three photographic prints. These pictures show three stages in the early construction of a building identified only as "Lester." A.J. Maclure was the architect, and construction began around April 1926. The final picture is dated May 12 and was taken by R.J. Waters & Company. PORTFOLIO OF ADDITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL AND CONSTRUCTION PHOTOGRAPHS. An additional group of some eighty-five original photographs, 7 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches or smaller. A number of the photographs show completed structures built by MacDonald & Kahn, while others were likely part of a photographic reference file used by the firm in its work. An outstanding collection of original photographic prints, showing the course of construction of more than two dozen projects and buildings in Northern California in the 1920s, including the Mark Hopkins Hotel, the Oakland Shipyards, Art Deco movie houses, financial institutions, and much more.

Three Confidential Documents of the US War Department and a Series of Photographs Depicting WWI Aircraft (US Airforce)

Washington: , 1918. Washington, 1918. Three confidential documents of the War Department, which comprise detailed reports, several drawings and a noteworthy series of photographs copied onto leafs. Folio, 36, 20, 4 pages, respectively, plus 37 photographs copied onto 16 separate leafs, each image numbered and captioned. Lacking three leaves of images, minor fraying to extremities, otherwise complete and in Very Good Condition. Three official reports from the War Department in Washington, dated January, March, July 1918 respectively, two being written by early U.S. military aviator and Lieutenant Colonel, Thurman Harrison Bane, who played a key role in establishing U.S. Air Force research and development. The latter documents are from the Office of the Chief Signal Officer, Major General George Owen Squier, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Aeronautical Division, U.S. Signal Corps, the first organizational ancestor of the US Air Force. The primary document, contains 36 pages typed data with sketch drawings, plus 16 pages of photographic images, is a reconnaissance work pertaining to German Aeronautics, drawing from the work Jean Lagorgette titled 'Aviation and the War'. Lieutenant Colonel Bane forms an exhaustive assessment with precise specifications and illustrative drawings. Technically detailed, these pages uncover virtually every aspect of construction and operation of several aeroplanes, such as wing design, fuselage, controls, motors, to the feature of utmost consequence for survival and conquest in war - its armament. German manufacturers are named throughout. Aircraft include the Albatros-Flugzeugwerke supply plane, the relatively advanced reconnaissance unit Roland, the Halberstadt fighter, the AEG Type G.IV biplane bomber modeled after the Wright Brothers biplane, the LVG bomber, the DFW reconnaissance aircraft, the Dutch Fokker monoplane, and the Gotha - a heavy night bomber used by the Luftstreitkräfte (Imperial German Air Service) and designed for long range service. The photographs primarily illustrate the famous Nieuport 11 (Bébé) Fighter, which has been touted to be the first "true" Allied fighter of WWI. American squadrons are seen mounting various guns to her. Deriving in part from the design of a racing aircraft, the tiny single seat aircraft became a catalyst in ending the 'Fokker Scourge' or rather, German dominance in WWI aviation. Also shown are the Sopwith aircraft used by the British Royal Air Force, the French Caudron, and the French reconnaissance and light bomber Farman. The second document is a course outline for American schools of military aeronautics, during the First World War, with subjects such as military discipline, signalling, gunneries, theories of flight, nomenclature, meteorology, rigging and mechanical repair, engines, and aerial tactics. The third and final document lists points of interest on cloud flying. In May 1918 Lieutenant Bane was made responsible for "procuring technical specifications for all aircraft and their equipment, and appraising the Army of their value" as head of the Technical Section of the Department of Military Aeronautics. This forms part of his most excellent work. In August the same year, one month after the primary document seen here, he was promoted to Colonel. .

Iraq in War Time. Al-Iraq fi zaman al-harb.

Basrah, Government Press, [1918].. Folio (257 x 344 mm). (104) pp. More than 200 photo prints. Original giltstamped green cloth.. Intriguing photo publication of both Iraq and Central Arabia during the Great War, brought out by St John Philby at the end of the year 1918, after he had served with the British administration in Baghdad from 1915 to 1917 and then travelled through the interior of the Arabian peninsula as head of a mission to Ibn Saud. Philby completed a great tour of the Nejd in nine months, covering some 4000 kilometres. "Over 600 photographs were taken, some of which were later published in 1918 in 'Iraq in War Time', the first photographic book to appear on Najd" (Badr El-Hage, p. 95f.). The book, captioned throughout in English and Arabic (in which Philby was fluent) is divided into four sections: "Groups and Portraits" (43 illustrations); "Local Events" (55 illustrations); "Views" (112 illustrations, including "In Basrah City", "Amarah", "Nasiriyah", "Baghdad", "Najaf", "Mosul", "Suq al Shuyukh", "In Persia"), and "A Tour through Central Arabia" (24 illustrations). Among these are numerous equestrian images ("The best Arab horse 'Winchester' owned by Fahud el Nasar", "Well-known Basrah Race Horses", "Arabs competing for a prize offered for the best Arab mare", "Judging the Arab mares", "Winner of the Prize for Arab Mares" etc.), and the portrait section contains a veritable gallery of the sheikhs and political officers of the Arabian scene during the Great War. The tour of the Nejd shows fascinating images of Jeddah, Nafudh, Sakha, Madhiq, Riyadh, Al-Hafar, Saqtah Gorge, the Shamsiyah Garden, etc., as well as Arab chiefs and a group portrait with the anonymous tourist Philby himself, surrounded by his Bedouin escort. "Although Philby was an amateur photographer, and the quality of his photographs fails at times to be up to standard, his achievements were remarkable, and his photographs documented many towns and villages for the first time" (Badr El-Hage, p. 114). - Cover slightly rubbed and faded at lower edge; interior clean. A good copy of this rare and important work. - Badr El-Hage, Saudi Arabia: Caught in Time, 1861-1939, p. 95. Imperial War Museum 29(567)/3-5. OCLC 757755425. Not in Macro or Wilson.

"During the past fourteen years I have been an eye-witness of events in Russia, and able to study at first-hand the manifold aspects of Reaction and Revolution, as each in its turn was exploited by our relentless foe. I was the only non-Russian civilian who participated in all the phases of the collapse of Socialism as a national force in July last during the short-lived offensive and disastrous retreat of the armies in Galicia, which was also the death-knell of the Revolution. The men who have figured in Russian affairs during that long period are personally known to me, and thanks to my relations with the Army, I have been able to study the Russian soldier under all conditions of service."- from Foreword.
