        Cats at Play

London: Blackie and Son Limited, 1917. Flying Fur, Caterwauling. and Cats on the Bandstand WAIN, Louis. Cats at Play. London: Blackie and Son Limited, n.d. [1917]. First edition. Folio (12 15/16 x 10 inches; 330 x 255 mm). Twelve pages with one to two captioned scenes in color, inner covers illustrated in black and white. Publisher's full color hand-sewn pictorial wrappers. Some creasing, wear and light chipping at edges and spine tail. A very good copy of a book that would normally have been destroyed by child. A particularly difficult Wain title to find in any condition. This is only the second copy of this book that we have seen in over 50 years… Interestingly the coloring is slightly different to the other copy that we have seen and the illustrations, whilst identical are bound in a slightly different order. At the end of the last century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells). "From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled…although he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!" (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914). Dale 34. Footnote: Not to be confused with another book of the same title [WAIN, Louis. RACKHAM, Arthur. SMITH, H. Officer. GLADWIN, May, et al. Cats At Play. London: John F. Shaw, n.d. [c. 1900-1904]. This edition is unrecorded and scarce, with no copies in institutional holdings worldwide, and not noted in the Wain or Rackham bibliographies. Small quarto (9 5/8 x 7 1/8 in; 245 x 180 mm). 160 pp., with advertising as endpapers. Illustrated throughout in black and white and color, with fifteen drawings by Louis Wain, and an unrecorded text drawing by Arthur Rackham (so initialed) on page 40. (see DB 02471).

Mitteilungs-Blatt des Verbandes der sozialdemokratischen Wahlvereine Berlins und Umgegend. 12. Jahrgang, Nr. 1, 1. April 1917 bis Nr. 53, 31. März 1918.

(Seywald 680).

The Mississippi Valley in British Politics.

Cleveland, OH: the Arthur H. Clark Company,, 1917. A study of the trade, land speculation, and experiments in imperialism culminating in the American Revolution. 2 volumes, octavo (237 x 153 mm). Contemporary blue half morocco, raised bands gilt to spines, compartments lettered or decorated in gilt, blue moiré cloth sides ruled in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers. Colour map frontispiece to each volume and 2 further maps. Contemporary bookplate of Francis A. Hardy and Mary Parry to front pastedowns. Pale marking to morocco of volume 1, extremities lightly rubbed, head of rear joint of volume 2 discreetly restored, front inner hinges superficially cracked but sound, tan-burn to endpapers from turn-ins. A very good copy. First edition of this important study, which received the Loubat Prize for 1918 and was reviewed favourably on publication by O. G. Libby, who considered Alvord "completely successful in maintaining his thesis that the Mississippi valley at a critical period in our history was again and again a determining factor in British politics. The part played by William Pitt, George III, Lord North, Shelburne, Hillsborough, Dartmouth, and a host of lesser lights is carefully dissected ? Here, too, we meet among the large group of Americans the familiar figures of Washington, Sir William Johnson, Franklin, Jeffersen, and Patrick Henry ? The separate topics dealt with have more than once been presented in detail by various writers but nowhere have they been in combined in a single treatment so as to bring out their relative importance in the whole scheme of colonial policy" (The Mississippi Valley Historical Review, Vol. 4, No. 1, June 1917, p. 131). "Alvord was one of the most erudite and creative of that school of American historians whose work was inspired and guided by the frontier theory of Frederick Jackson Turner. He continued the search for the spirit of the American frontier ? This search took the mid-western scholar to England for research in the papers of Lord Shelburne, a close contemporary and colleague of Benjamin Franklin and a major directing force in the success and expansion of the American empire of private property. Alvord's ringing endorsements of the ideas and visions that animated the land speculators vividly illustrates how important their conceptions have been in shaping the ethos of the continuing American Revolution" (Hall and Hall, The American Empire and the Fourth World, p. 361).

He soon became a cult figure for Irish republicans. His writings, speeches and poems became widely popular during the subsequent violent struggle for Irish independence and in subsequent decades. Patrick Pearse was the son of James Pearse, a Unitarian stonemason from Birmingham who moved to Dublin and established a successful business on Great Brunswick Street later renamed Pearse Street. James Pearse married his second wife Margaret Brady. His great aunt also named Margaret and his schooling at Westland Row CBS, gave Pearse a life long love of the Irish language and influenced his Irish nationalist outlook. As a teenager Pearse joined the Gaelic League and in his early 20s became editor of its newspaper An Claidheamh Soluis. His heroes were Cuchulainn and rebel leaders such as Wolfe Tone and Robert Emmet. Pearse was also a devout Roman Catholic. He studied in the Royal University of Ireland and studied law at the King's Inns, Dublin before becoming a barrister. In the early 1900s, Pearse set up St. Enda's School in south Dublin where boys were taught in both the English and Irish language while a St. Ita's had similar aims for girls. He believed that schooling in the Irish language would ensure its survival and the Irish language was inseparable from Irish nationhood. However the project led to financial difficulties while many parents who sent their children to the school were disturbed by Pearse's radical nationalist ideas. Several former students fought against British rule in later years. Pearse's activities came to the notice of radical Irish republicans in Ireland and the U.S. By 1913 Pearse was a leading member of the IRB and the Irish Volunteers. He shared political platforms with the nationalist John Redmond MP leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party and supported the campaign for Irish Home Rule. A Home Rule bill was passed by the House of Commons in 1914 but was shelved following the outbreak of the Great War the same year. The majority of the volunteers joined the British Army and fought in the conflict. Pearse lost faith in Home Rule and with other IRB leaders plotted a rising against British rule. Pearse gave a famous oration in 1915 at the graveside of veteran Fenian Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa declaring that ' Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.' On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, a rump of the Irish Volunteers joined forces with radical socialist James Connally's Irish Citizens Army militia and captured the GPO and other buildings in Dublin . Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic which declared Ireland to be an independent republic. A week of bloody fighting followed before the rebels surrendered to British forces in Dublin . Pearse and his fellow prisoners were treated with hostility by many Dubliners for the death and destruction of property caused during the Rising. He and fourteen others including his brother Willie were court martialled by General Maxwell and sentenced to death. Pearse was executed at Kilmainham Jail on 3rd May, 1916. Subsequent to the executions, Irish public opinion swung in favour of Irish republicanism and in the election of 1918, Sinn Fein candidates, many of whom had fought with Pearse in 1916, eclipsed the Home Rule orientated Irish Parliamentary Party. The outcome of the Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War that followed was the partition of Ireland and not the fully independent Irish republic that Pearse had envisioned. (Source: Ask about Ireland)Séamus (James) Fitzgerald (21 August 1896 23 July 1972) was an Irish politician. He was elected unopposed as a Sinn Féin Teachta Dála (TD) to the 2nd Dáil at the 1921 elections for the Cork East and North East constituency. Fitzgerald was born in Cobh (then known as Queenstown) in 1896. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 and was mobilised in Cork in preparation for the Easter Rising in 1916. When the Rising failed to spread beyond Dublin and some other limited actions, Fitzgerald and many of his Cork comrades was interned in Britain. After the amnesty for prisoners he rejoined what had now become the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in Cobh and also became active in the Sinn Féin party. He was elected a member of the town's first republican Urban District Council (now Cobh Town Council) at the 1919 local elections and was elected chairman at its first meeting. He opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and voted against it. He stood as an anti-Treaty Sinn Féin candidate at the 1922 general election but was not elected. He joined Fianna Fáil in 1926 shortly after its foundation and was to remain a prominent member of the party in the Cork area for the next 50 years until his death. He was elected to the Irish Free State Seanad in 1934 and served until it was abolished in 1936. He stood in several elections for that party in both Cork East and Cork City but was only successful on one occasion when elected to the short-lived 11th Dáil as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork Borough constituency at the 1943 general election. He lost his seat at the 1944 general election. Fitzgerald owned a local business in Cobh and was an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce as well as Cork Harbour Commissioners (now the Port of Cork Company). He held several directorships in local companies. Séamus Fitzgerald died in 1972. (Wikipedia)

Towards the Goal. With a Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt.

London: John Murray. 1917. - ROOSEVELT'S COPY, Inscribed by the author. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's pink cloth with paper labels, faded to spine, light edgewear and bumping to spine, very good indeed. Internally clean, occasional trifling spotting. Inscribed by Mrs Ward to President Roosevelt, who wrote the foreword. A passionately written plea to America to join the First World War before it is too late. A fine association. Mary Ward was asked by Theodore Roosevelt to write a series of articles to explain to Americans what was happening in Britain during the War. The United States originally pursued a policy of non-intervention, avoiding conflict while trying to broker a peace. Woodrow Wilson unsuccessfully tried to mediate a settlement and was under pressure from former President Roosevelt who denounced German acts as "piracy". A breakdown in official relations was announced in February 1917, and following a submarine attack on seven US merchant ships, America entered the Great War in April.         Der Ziegelbrenner. Hefte 1-8 in 5 Heften.

Fight or Buy Bonds. Third Liberty Loan

Boston: Forbes, 1917. Original poster. Lithograph. Measures 30 x 20". This beautifully-rendered World War I-era poster is a fine example of the work of Howard Chandler Christy, one of the foremost illustrators of wartime posters in the US. This poster features one of the artist's typical "Christy Girls" waving an American flag with a backdrop of storming troops behind her. The scene is rendered in a watercolor-like style that likely contributed greatly to the poster's effectiveness in motivating American citizens to support the war effort. The poster was released by Third Liberty Loan, which was the largest fund-raising effort in American history to that date. The poster is in good condition with minor edge wear near the top right edges. Fold along center of poster. A lovely example of Christy's work and an icon of the World War I era. Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) was an American magazine illustrator who gained a reputation for military scenes thanks to pictures he made during the Spanish-American War. His World War I posters were incredibly popular as well, particular in his distinct depiction of charming women with strong values.

Stanley Motor Carriage Company 1917 Stock Certificate and Other Documents

Very Good. The letters are in very good condition with some light soil, and the stock certificate has edge chips and two fold lines, with one corner piece missing. Documents include a blind stamped stock certificate from 1917 from the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, signed by the new owner and president of the company, Prescott Warren, who bought the company from the surviving Stanley brother. Two letters to the stock owner from 1923 relate to the receivership of the company, one on Stanley Motor Carriage Company Letterhead from the appointed receiver and the other with O'Brien Bros. Motor Company / Stanley Steam Cars letterhead, from Chicago. Another document is circa 1917, a syndicate agreement of the Stanley Motor Car Company. Another letter is from a stock brokerage from 1924 and tells the owner that is stock is worthless after the recent liquidation of the company. "Liquidated Worthless" is written sideways in the margin. Other handwritten notes on the company's financials are pinned to the letters. The Stanley Steam cars were produced from 1908 to 1924 but could not compete with internal combustion engines and their much lower cost. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall .

128 x 90,5 cm, Zustand A. min. gebräunt AuftraggeberIn: Pro Senectute, Zürich - Am 23.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1917 - 1917 Wisden Original Hardback

1917. I was very tempted to give this 1917 original hardback 10 out of 10. A can t really find any fault with it. The front and rear boards and the spine are in absolutely immaculate condition. The gilt to the front board and the spine is extremely bright and completely unrestored. Front and rear yellow pages are in almost new condition. The hinges are extremelystrong and the book has an unopened feel to it. The contents are in as new condition. It would be very difficult to find a better copy - perhaps it should really be a 10! We hope to list over the next few weeks a number of fine pre-war publisher s hardbacks including issues for the 1890 s and the First World War and several years from the 1860 s and 1870 s all in fine condition. Please keep a look out for them.
