Fight or Buy Bonds. Third Liberty Loan

Forbes, Boston 1917 - Original poster. Lithograph. Measures 30 x 40" This beautifully-rendered World War I-era poster is a fine example of the work of Howard Chandler Christy, one of the foremost illustrators of wartime posters in the US. This poster features one of the artist's typical "Christy Girls" waving an American flag with a backdrop of storming troops behind her. The scene is rendered in a watercolor-like style that likely contributed greatly to the poster's effectiveness in motivating American citizens to support the war effort. The poster was released by Third Liberty Loan, which was the largest fund-raising effort in American history to that date. The poster is in good condition with minor edge wear near the top right edges. Fold along center of poster. A lovely example of Christy's work and an icon of the World War I era. Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) was an American magazine illustrator who gained a reputation for military scenes thanks to pictures he made during the Spanish-American War. His World War I posters were incredibly popular as well, particular in his distinct depiction of charming women with strong values.

        Typed Letter Signed

New York: np, 1917. First edition. Very Good. REMARKABLE AND IMPASSIONED LETTER BY ROOSEVELT ON THE MORAL RESPONSIBILITY OF AMERICANS TO ENTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR. The letter, typed on Roosevelt's Metropolitan Office stationery and dated January 8, 1917, is addressed to Judge Daniel J. Kenefick, the Chairman of the Committee of Protest on Enslavement of Belgians and Poles and reads in full: My dear Judge Kenefick: I wish I could be present at the Buffalo meeting to speak on behalf of the Belgians and Poles, and against their enslavement. As that is impossible, may I, through you, express my deep sympathy with your meeting and its purpose. This nation owes it to itself to refuse to be neutral between right and wrong. Our prime duty, of course, is the duty of self-defense, the duty of protecting the honor and the interest of this country, and of guaranteeing our own people against wrong. But second only to this duty, comes the duty of making our views heard, and, if possible, our weight felt, on the side of righteousness and against iniquity in international affairs. We are false to the memory of the great Americans of the past, if we sit by with our hands folded, and fail to make an effective protest when such hideous enormities are practiced as those practiced by Germany in Belgium. I believe that similar deeds have been done in Poland, but as regards the Belgians, and as regards the men and women deported from northern France, we have not had merely ample, but minute information. These men and women in northern France have been sent into state slavery in Germany, and over 100,000 Belgians have suffered the same fate. They are sent to Germany so that by their labor they are aiding Germans in killing their fellow country-men. No such infamy has been perpetrated in any war between civilized powers for over two centuries. It is for us, as the largest neutral nation, to remember that when neutrals fail to protest against action of this kind, they become accomplices in wrong-doing. A private individual, who sees some powerful law breaker knock down a helpless woman or child, and who himself makes no protest and no effort at rescue of any kind, is rightly regarded as being tainted in some manner with the crime. Exactly the same kind of condemnation should be meted out to this nation for not having interfered to the extent of its power, in the effort to prevent the hideous iniquity that has just been perpetrated. I am very glad that this meeting of protest has been called. Sincerely yours, [signed] Theodore Roosevelt January, 1917, was a critical time in the evolution of US opinion over the war in Europe. As late as January 22, 1917, President Wilson argued, in his "peace without victory" address, that the US should not engage in military action. However, "Germany's decision to begin unrestricted submarine warfare in February 1917 ended Wilson's pursuit of impartial U.S. neutrality... and in mid-March 1917, when German submarines sank three U.S. ships, Wilson was forced to make a choice. No longer able to remain at peace and protect the nation's maritime and commercial interests, Wilson led the United States into the European conflict shortly after the inauguration of his second term. At a special session of the new Congress on 2 April 1917, denouncing Germany's autocratic government and its submarine warfare, he called for war to liberate all nations from this threat, including the Germans themselves. He proclaimed that 'the world must be made safe for democracy.' Four days later, Congress declared war against Germany" (American National Biography). Roosevelt, in this letter, powerfully argues for US involvement on moral grounds, and reveals much about his philosophy with regard to one nation's responsibility to the suffering people of another nation. New York: January 8, 1917. Quarto, two pages (typed on rectos only) on Roosevelt's Metropolitan letterhead. Signed in full in ink and with numerous manuscript corrections in Roosevelt's hand. Expected folds, otherwise fine. ROOSEVELT LETTERS WITH SUCH EXTRAORDINARY CONTENT ARE VERY RARE.

[Op. 22]. Vier Lieder op. 22 für Gesang und Orchester Vereinfachte Studier- und Dirigierpartitur (Hiezu ein Vorwort). [Short score]

Wien... Leipzig: Universal-Edition [PN U.E. 6060], 1917. First Edition, first issue of the complete cycle. Rare. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 40-41. Ringer p. 314. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 15-16. According to the website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna, the second issue (1920) is printed on paper of better quality and slightly larger format (259 x 337 mm vs. 264 x 337 mm). The second of the songs, "Alle, welche die suchen," was published previously in the avant-garde periodical Zeit-Echo: Ein Kriegs-Tagebuch der Künstler, vol. 14 (Munich-Berlin: Graphik-Verlag, 1915), pp. 206-09. The Four Songs of op. 22 were Schoenberg's last composition before his seven-year hiatus as a composer, which ended only with his development of dodecaphony. They are set to texts by Ernest Dowson (1867-1900), in German translation by Stefan George (1868-1933) and Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926). The title does not specify a register for the vocal part, but a soprano is implied. "Schoenberg's 'simplified score for study and conducting' is supposed to resemble, in its appearance, a piano reduction for two or four--if necessary, also for six or eight--hands... The simplified notation of an orchestral score, however, is not the result of a [similar] simplification of the orchestra... The fact that similar sonorities are written in completely different ways makes reading more difficult, and Schoenberg never reverted to this manner of notation." Agnes Grond, website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna.. Oblong folio. Original publisher's green printed wrappers. [i] (title), [ii] (table of contents: the four songs with credits for their texts and specification of performing forces), [iii]-[iv] (preface by Schoenberg), 5-16 pp. Printed footnote to first page of each song (pp. 5, 10, 12-left corner; p. 15-right corner) and with "Stich und Druck von F.M. Geidel, Leipzig" to right of p. 5. Titling of upper wrapper identical with title. The preface, "Die vereinfachte Studier- und Dirigier-Partitur," explains the experimental layout of the score, which is basically a short score. Browned; slightly worn; dampstained at upper margin; to center of upper edge.

Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. 1917-1920. Oblong octavo measuring 6" x 8". String-tied black cloth over flexible paper boards with "photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 62 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 2.5" x 3" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Very good album with worn edges, some detached pages, and tears with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a woman while attending Mount Allison Ladies College. The photos in this album are from the years 1917-1920. Throughout the album there are group photos of the faculty and students around campus as well as candid images of the women. These include girl's posing in the gymnasium, participating in a marching drill on the campus grounds, and in various costumes. One photo from November 1917 shows a girl posing with a gun, another shows two women pretending to get married with one dressed as a groom and the other a bride, and a variety of Halloween costumes. The girls are also seen cuddling in bed together in their pajamas and posing with school pennants. There are also group photos of the graduating classes of 1918 and 1919 with girls in full graduation cap and gown. One section of photos shows the "Lawn Drill" which was a favorite part of the closing exercises and involved the girls marching and forming shapes on a field with their bodies. Towards the end of the album there are photos of men in World War I with images of men in uniform and one of two men posing by a canon. Beginning in 1854 the "Ladies College" was formed as a branch of the Mount Allison Boy's Academy in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. An editorial written by Mary Electa Adams, a teacher at Mount Allison in 1855, discussed how instead of the normal method of teaching women Mount Allison's programs aimed at "producing women of intellectual Vigour." Adams felt that "women needed and deserved a rigorous academic program." The college was the first in the British Empire to award women a bachelor's degree. An interesting collection of photographs depicting a young woman's education during World War I. .

[Photo Album]: Album of British Nurse, 1917-1931

1917-1931. Oblong small quarto. String-tied gray card covers with "Photographs" in darker gray ink on front wrap. 89 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver images. Various sizes, mostly between 1.75" x 2.5" and 2.5" x 3.5", with some larger. Well-captioned images. Ownership "name" ("Myself") on front wrap, two images lacking (but the album is unpillaged), else near fine. Album created by a British nurse, first caring for invalided soldiers in WWI and then continuing on during her service at various private homes and public hospitals. Although the photographs are well-dated, they are not laid out strictly chronologically. The earliest seem to be devoted to her tenure at Torbay Hospital in (confusingly) Torquay in South Devon between 1917 and 1918 caring for soldiers (the current Torbay Hospital was built in 1925, so presumably this was an impromptu hospital set-up for war service). Afterwards it seems that she might have worked as a private nurse on a number of estates (Sherrington Manor and others), at Beach Hill Nursing Home in Barnstable (where she is seen holding babies), and finally ending up at Golden Square Throat Hospital in London. A good number of the pictures are of the compiler and other nurses in their uniforms, some with recovering soldiers. Others are of her traveling, in a bathing costume, and near the end in 1929 in a bridal gown. Also included are a few pictures of Golden Square Throat Hospital and its staff, as well as a few "photostrip" images of the compiler, some taken at Selfridge's. While the compiler has identified many of those in the album, she has not identified herself. A little research and some triangulation could certainly result in a possible positive identification of the compiler. A pleasing album with good quality images and which is nicely subject specific. .

        Parnassus on Wheels

J.B. Lippincott Company, New York, Philadelphia, Toronto 1917 - Later Lippincott edition broadly SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author on the front free endpaper with the inscription, "And signed for [name] with best wishes from Christopher Morley," dated May 20, 1944. Beautiful signature sits large and prominent amid inscription and date. Though this edition may not be so rare, the author's signature is exceptionally scarce in any edition let alone in such a compelling presentation. Both the book and the jacket are in beautiful shape with very little wear except for some moisture damage. As for the jacket, the moisture has caused some darkening to the spine, but there is no associated puckering or misshaping. The jacket sits flush with no tears or shelf wear, though the inside of the jacket has been dyed red in places along the spine from the moisture. The book itself is clean and crisp with no writing or marks of any kind. The bright red boards are flat and true with no corner or edge damage, though there is some slight discoloration or fading along the spine from moisture as well. This scarce copy comes protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed! [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
