        Autograph letter signed

1917. Signed. FROST, Robert. Autograph letter signed. Amherst, Mass: January 6, 1917. One sheet of laid paper (10 by 6-1/2 inches), folded once to make four pages, written on all four pages. $2800.Lengthy, four-page autograph letter signed by Frost to his friend Robert von Moschzisker, Pennsylvania Supreme Court judge and legal author, regarding improvements Frost was making to his “little old farm house” and making arrangements for an upcoming visit. The letter, penned entirely by Frost, reads in full: ""Amherst Mass. January 6 1917. Dear von Moschzisker: We too have deserted the high places for the winter. We have come to Amherst to profess Poetry till next June (no later). And it was well we had Amherst to come to, because we had about driven ourselves out of our house in Franconia by the building operations we had set going in it. The changes we are making in the house are mostly on the inside: they hardly show on the outside—not at all from the front: our object has been to keep it what it was, a little old farm house: but we had ripped up floors and moved windows and doors till we hadn't any where to lay our heads or sit down to read a book. So, as I say, it was a mercy that we were asked to come to Amherst just when we were. I tell you all this about the house because I saw that Mrs. von Moschzisker looked worried when I told her we were going to make it more habitable. You can assure her we have saved it about as it was. ""The book came when I was in the middle of moving and a dozen other things. I haven't had time for it yet. I shall be sure to have a lot of pleasure out of it. A friend of yours edited the one you sent a year ago. As it happens a friend of mine, John Erskine, edited the one you send this year. I notice one omission on your part: you failed to write your name on the fly leaf of the book where I should like to have had it. ""Now as to when we were thinking of visiting you. I spoke of January 28th. That still seems the best date. I shall have engagements on both sides of Philadelphia at Baltimore and at Princeton just before and after the 28th. Elinor will be with me. What do you say? Sincerely yours, Robert Frost."" A Pennsylvania state Supreme Court judge at the time of this letter, von Moschzisker went on to become the Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1921. Faint foldlines. Fine condition.

GAS WARFARE] Carbon copy of letter sent by Willis R. Whitney to Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels on establishing the U.S. position on poison gas and warfare.

1917 - [GAS WARFARE] Carbon copy of letter sent by Willis R. Whitney to Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels on establishing the U.S. position on poison gas and warfare. 10x8 inches, on onion skin paper. +_+ On 21 December 1917, thee years into the beginning of World War I and eight months after America entered the war, Willis R. Whitney composed this one-page letter composing the American response to the use of poison gas in warfare. Whitney was head of one the great research laboratories in America—run by General Electric, the GE Lab—and was one of the leaders of the U.S. Navy‘s Naval Review Board (along with Thomas Edison and Hudson Maxim, among others), and wrote to Josephus Daniels, who was at the time the U.S. Secretary of the Navy._+_ Whitney was a chemist, a former instructor at MIT, and a Ph.D. under Ostwald, a brilliant, “bearish” intellect in many fields, an innovator, and a leader, a tactician. He summarized the state of affairs, and communicated quickly and with clarity and without hesitation what he thought must be done, and how America should respond to the German chemical threat. _+_ The Germans had first used chemical weapons (shells containing xylyl bromide) against Russian troops in Bolimow, Poland. It was the first foray into a section of the war that caused more than one million casualties and 85,000 deaths. It would be another three months for the first full-scale use of a chemical weapon—in the form of chlorine gas—in the Second Battle of Ypres. But the time Whitney sent his letter, chemical warfare had been a deeply-established weapon.+_+ Whitney recommends that the U.S. begin production; that several plants be established to produce the chemicals, and to get on the matter immediately, suggesting a man to head the work. As it turns out the work didn’t begin in earnest for a number of months later, the first large quantities becoming available just after the signing of the Armistice._+_ Notes: from "Physics Today", March 1958, "Willis R. Whitney, founder of the General Electric Research Laboratory, died on January 9 in Schenectady, N. Y., after suffering a heart attack a week earlier. He was 89 years old. Born in Jamestown, N. Y., Dr. Whitney was graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1890 and received his PhD from the University of Leipzig, Germany, in 1896. In 1908, after having served as assistant and associate professor of theoretical chemistry at MIT for 8 years, he was named nonresident professor of chemical research, a title which he still held at the time of his death. In 1900, Dr. Whitney joined GE to work with Charles Steinmetz and from that year until 1932 he became the founder and active director of the GE Research Laboratory. During the last four years of this period he also served as vice president in charge of research for the company. In 1932 he retired from the directorship of the laboratory and, in 1941, from the vice presidency. Since that time he had continued research in the capacity of honorary vice president and consultant to the laboratory. Dr. Whitney held many awards and honorary degrees of international origin. He was a member of the American Physical Society.+_+ And another, far more literary and scientific appraisal here, in the journal Nature. A delightful review of Whitney's career is presented in J.E. Brittain's long article "Electrical Engineering Hall of Fame: Willis R. Whitney", in the Proceedings of the IEEE, volume 95, issue 12, 2007. See also: Willis R. Whitney, General Electric, and the origins of U.S. industrial research by George Wise, Columbia University Press, 1985.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1917 - 1917 Wisden Original Hardback fine condition

1917. I was very tempted to give this 1917 original hardback 10 out of 10. A can t really find any fault with it. The front and rear boards and the spine are in absolutely immaculate condition. The gilt to the front board and the spine is extremely bright and completely unrestored. Front and rear yellow pages are in almost new condition. The hinges are extremelystrong and the book has an unopened feel to it. The contents are in as new condition. It would be very difficult to find a better copy - perhaps it should really be a 10! We hope to list over the next few weeks a number of fine pre-war publisher s hardbacks including issues for the 1890 s and the First World War and several years from the 1860 s and 1870 s all in fine condition. Please keep a look out for them.

        Lion Cachet - Jaarbeurs Utrecht.

DE EERSTE JAARBEURS IN NEDERLANDReclame affiche voor de eerste Nederlandse Jaarbeurs te Utrecht in 1917. Kleurenlithografie ontworpen door Carel Adolph Lion Cachet (1864 ?? 1945). Afm. 102 x 69 cm. Prijs: ?975,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

In 1916 William Rothenstein, a friend of Bone and a fellow member of the Society of Twelve, proposed that an artist should be sent to the front to record the War, Bone was chosen for the task. He arrived in August, 1916 at the height of the Somme Offensive and toured the Southern battle-fields working rapidly in various media - pencil, pen, charcoal and chalk - sending back over 150 finished drawings by October. "He recorded mostly life behind the lines illustrating the settings for war rather than battle scenes – the work of the medical services, encampments, soldiers of duty, soldiers marching, landscapes and ruined towns...The detail and accuracy of Bone's drawings provided an authentic, eyewitness record of the immense logistic efforts of the Somme, one that proved immensely popular and resulted in more artists being commissioned." [IWM Somme web-site]. Bone has been described as one of the greatest British draughtsmen and the composition of these "masterly lithographs" [DNB] is a clear confirmation of that judgement. Very rarely encountered complete, the lithographs having often been sold off individually, no sets traced at auction in the last 20 years.

        CATHERINE HERSELF [Winifred Herself]

[CAMBRIDGE, nd. Ca.1917). First Edition. Quarto. WINIFRED HERSELF is actually the working title for "Catherine Herself". Original carbon typescript, ribbon bound into three gatherings: 1-153, 158-337 and 340-527 pp. several endleaves to the second gathering detached, torn and frayed; gaps in collation noted above a consequence of detached leaves now absent; wanting at least one leaf at end; some other creasing and fraying but in all a very good and clean draft of James Hilton's precocious first novel, here still bearing its preliminary working title. According to Kunitz & Haycraft, Hilton wrote this novel when he was a 17 year old undergraduate at Christ's College, Cambridge and it was published in 1920 by T. Fisher Unwin, a year before he graduated. In all probability, apart form the character name change, this typescript represents a text which is at variance from the published form. In spite of the interruptions in collation, this is an important manuscript from the very earliest days of a career that included the later substantial successes. Housed in a gray cloth clamshell with blue morocco spine label gilt.

Towards the Goal. With a Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt.

London: John Murray. 1917. ROOSEVELT'S COPY, Inscribed by the author. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's pink cloth with paper labels, faded to spine, light edgewear and bumping to spine, very good indeed.Internally clean, occasional trifling spotting. Inscribed by Mrs Ward to President Roosevelt, who wrote the foreword. A passionately written plea to America to join the First World War before it is too late. A fine association. Mary Ward was asked by Theodore Roosevelt to write a series of articles to explain to Americans what was happening in Britain during the War. The United States originally pursued a policy of non-intervention, avoiding conflict while trying to broker a peace. Woodrow Wilson unsuccessfully tried to mediate a settlement and was under pressure from former President Roosevelt who denounced German acts as "piracy". A breakdown in official relations was announced in February 1917, and following a submarine attack on seven US merchant ships, America entered the Great War in April.

Into the Dead Heart, The Cruise of the Avocet, Ooldea and In the Far North-East.

Adelaide: W.K. Thomas, 1914-, 1917. Duodecimo, four books bound together in contemporary quarter roan with gilt lettering; with a total of 83 photo plates (some folding), with original printed wrappers bound in. An outstanding collection of Australian ornithology and central desert travel narratives by pioneering conservationist and Aboriginal advocate Samuel Albert White (1870-1954).White is remembered as an intrepid traveller of the central Australia and for his collaboration with Gregory Matthews on the definitive ornithology reference The Birds of Australia. Born in Adelaide, White served in South Africa and upon his return participated in several major overland expeditions, including a journey to Alice Springs by camel in 1913 and the Musgrave and Everard ranges in 1914. White later accompanied expeditions to Cooper Creek, the Nullarbor, and the Finke River; he later played a prominent role in the creation of South Australian national parks. As reflected in these books, White sought the companionship of the central desert Aborigines and advocated their welfare in the public arena. In particular, Into the Dead Heart contains significant ethnological description of the desert tribes, including anecdotal descriptions of the author's interactions with individual Aboriginal people. Another work within this bound collection titled On the Flooded Murray River contains a sub-chapter titled "Native Art and Rock Shelters. An old camping ground visited". Here White records an excursion to a Victorian rock art site, complete with a large folding plate comprising images of the cave, its art, and the author's companions Messers. Zeitz and Bellchambers. These four books are originally from the collection of surgeon and South Australian resident Dr. Edward Angas Johnson, and have been inscribed to him by Captain White. The front endpaper bears the bookplate of Adelaide city council alderman Charles R. F. Glover, an assiduous collector of Australiana and ethnological artefacts.Details of the four titles are as follows:Into the Dead Heart. An Ornithological Trip through Central Australia. 1914, 154 pp., 26 full-page photo plates. The Cruise of the Avocet. In Search of Skuas and other Things. [1916], 68pp, 15 full-page photo plates, all ornithological in nature.Ooldea, on the East-West Railway, On the Flooded Murray River. [1917], 88pp., 29 full-page photo plates (three folding). In the Far North-East. A Scientific Expedition. [1917], 144pp., 13 full-page photo plates. Excellent.
