        The Allies' Fairy Book

1916. The Deluxe Edition"How Beautiful I Think Your Illustrations""One of Three Over-Copies"[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. The Allies? Fairy Book. With an introduction by Edmund Gosse C.B. and illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, [n.d., 1916].Edition DeLuxe Limited to 525 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being "one of three over-copies". Quarto (9 11/16 x 7 3/8 inches; 246 x 187 mm.). xxii, 121, [1], [4, blank] pp. Twelve color plates mounted on heavy brown paper, with descriptive tissue guards printed in red, and twenty-four drawings in black and white. Publisher's blue buckram, front cover and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Corners slightly bumped, covers a little soiled, otherwise an excellent copy.Three of the tipped-in color plates (frontispiece, facing p. 18 & p.94 have white borders and are from the smaller format first trade edition. The most probable explanation is that the publisher decided to bind up this "one of three over-copies" but was short of three of the color plates which they substituted with the smaller ones from the trade edition."His book for 1916, The Allies' Fairy Book, published by Heinemann as a contribution to the mood of patriotism and cooperation between the Allies, is likewise composed of images that thrill and inspire, but do not terrify. Where in Grimm, Rackham happily includes illustrations of people battering each other to death or hanging by the hair and caught in brambles alive or half dead, this kind of image is not dwelt upon in The Allies' Fairy Book... even though some of the stories are as red in tooth and claw as any of their type and certainly would have allowed a violent interpretation. Reports coming back from the Front, eye-witness accounts of devastation, violation and butchery, were quite enough to suggest to Rackham and his publishers that at this time the Allies could be spared violent images with their family reading at home." (Hamilton, Arthur Rackham. p. 109)."When The Allies' Fairy Book was published, [Edmund] Gosse wrote to Rackham (6th November 1916): 'Will you think me impertinent if I tell you how beautiful I think your illustrations... their variety, and ingenuity, and the delicacy of your fancy, and the romantic ardour of your mind, were never so humble a degree - in a work so charming'" (Hudson, p. 104).The tales, from their nation of origin, include: English: Jack the Giant-KillerScottish: The Battle of the BirdsWelsh: Lludd and LlevelysIrish: GuleeshFrench: The Sleeping BeautyItalian: Cesarino and The DragonPortuguese: What Came of Picking FlowersJapanese: The Adventures of Little Peachling, The Fox's Wedding and The Tongue-cut SparrowRussian: FrostSerbian: The Golden Apple-tree and The Nine Pea HensBelgium: The Last Adventure of Thyl UlenspiegelLatimore and Haskell, pp. 45-46.         JUNGLE BOOK

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1916. The first colour illustrated edition, early reissue of the first edition with the Detmolds’ illustrations. With 16 superb illustrations in color by Maurice & Edward Detmold. Small 4to, publisher’s bright red cloth lettered in gilt on spine, the upper cover gilt-lettered and pictorially gilt-decorated featuring Riki Tiki Tavi, t.e.g. xii, 314, [2 ads] pp. A very handsome copy, the text and cloth both bright and fresh, just a bit of very minor expected age mellowing. ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE EDITONS OF KIPLING'S FAMED JUNGLE BOOK, With illustrations by both Edward and Maurice Detmold. To this day, these illustrations are treasured for their power and sensitivity. They are evocative of an age gone by but represent some of the finest work created during the new renaissance of English book illustration at the turn of the century. Copies are now quite elusive. The Jungle Book represents a collection of Kipling’s best loved stories for children. The first stories are built around the premise of a human child lost in the jungles and raised by wild animals. Among the noted characters are Mowgli the child, Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear. The beloved tale of Riki Tiki Tavi is also among these enchanting stories.

Vázlatok a Hadifogságból. Sketches From the Prison of War. Piestschanka. POW camp Peschanka, near Chita, Siberia, c. 1916-1917.

1916. 14 mounted plates in pencil, ink and colour wash, 2 of which are stuck to the outsides of the portfolio's protective boards with cloth ties. Various sizes, but mostly ca. 170 x 130 mmmm. Signed and captioned in English and Hungarian. Rare survival of a collection of sketches from the Russian POW camp in Peschanka, Siberia, all executed by an evidently accomplished, otherwise undocumented Hungarian artist (and soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army) who captured the conditions in and around the camp during the later years of the First World War. Thám's caricature-like style is marked by clear, precise outlines reminiscent of the work of Olaf Gulbransson and Eduard Thöny. The two larger sketches on the cover boards (measuring ca. 170 x 220 mm) show self-portraits of the artist, at work at oil paintings (one a landscape, the other a nude). The leaves within show prisoners climbing the bunk bed or resting in their crowded cots, marching through a snowed-in camp carrying heavy buckets, playing chess, etc.; some are captioned "Coming from the American Y.M.C.A. Kitchen", "The Red Cross library", or even show ladies in fur coats with an officer "at the exhibition", while a few others have Easter Greetings themes. - Peschanka is near Chita in the Transbaikalia region, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 6035 kilometres from Moscow. While during the Great War conditions in the POW camps on the whole were vastly superior to those during WWII, due to the efforts of the Red Cross and inspectors from neutral countries, the situation in the Siberian camps was notoriously poor, and about a quarter of the 2.1 million Austro-Hungarian soldiers which Russia held as prisoners or war did not survive. - Browned due to paper, with occasional edge flaws, but well-preserved.

        MANUSCRIPT Cycling Tours 1916-1918

This is a charming Manuscript account of a number of Cycling Holidays and Walks round England & Wales between the years 1916-1918, kept in an old Midland Railway Company record book, and illustrated with many original photographs and other relevant pictures cut from papers of the day. The book opens with an account of a Walk to Barnet on Boxing day 1916, followed by an account of an Easter tour through east England in 1917. Then an account of the year 1917 described as a wonderful year. Then the First Tour of the Year in 1918 is titled "The Wheels of Chance, A Literary Pilgrimage" taking a trip round Surrey and Sussex following in the footsteps of "Mr Hoopdriver", a trip inspired by the H. G Wells novel "The Wheels of Chance", which was loved by the author of this work and his friends. The next trip is titled "A Ride to Reading", The Next "A Scorch to Stratford-Upon-Avon" Whitsun 1918, and finishing with the longest account titled "A Sentimental Journey to Wales 1918, The Diary of The Pilgrim of Love", a few of the names mentioned in the account are Robert Kenny, Reg. G Hyett, Private Jaggers, Ashbbe & Earle, a more thorough reading may identify the author. The book is a folio format measuring 13.5 inches by 11 inches approx., running to fifty two used pages

History of the First Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry 1861-1864

Stillwater, Minnesota: Easton & Masterman Printers, 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo. [8], 508 pages. Illustrated with 3 folding maps, one map in text, and 11 illustrations including the frontispiece photograph of Gov. Ramsey. Blue cloth hardcover with gilt title on spine. Cloth is split down the rear joint and chipped head and base of spine. Light shelf wear to cloth covers. Front hinge cracked. Some light soiling to the gutter of the first 40 pages. A couple of small repairs to the first 30 pages. Faded W.S.A. initials written on top and bottom text block edges. Previous owner's signature "We??? Stevens Abbott" written vertically on front paste down. This copy has two added orders and a bookplate on the right front flyleaf (see description below). Scattered pencil underlining and marginalia on front end sheets, inside text and on the roster section. Old news clipping regarding Lincoln's 125 Birthday and New England Cavalry facsimile advertisement laid in between pages 190-191 resulted in a brown shadow stain. Cloth binding protected by mylar jacket. Dornbusch I MN. This copy, owned by a relative of soldier(s) from the 1st Regiment, contains several short personal hand written notes in text and roster section. Two added "Orders" were placed inside the book. On the front paste down is a printed copy of Gen. Washington's General Order, Aug. 3, 1776 & Gen. McClellan's General Order, September 6, 1861. Written underneath the order in pencil - "This was in John Hoblitt's Knapsack." Next to the note is a question in pencil - "Who had it?". W. Stevens Abbott name is written in pen on the front paste down next to the order. On the right front flyleaf is the bookplate of Sydney C. Kerkis. A pencil inscription written underneath the bookplate reads, "John Hoblitt, Corporal, Co. "D" 21 years old. Died of Disease 11/20/1861 - There were Three Stevens, Four Abbotts and Two Hoblitts in the Regiment." The second added "Order" is located before page 1. This is a two page printed copy of "Lieut. Col. C. P. Adams' Last Order." Adam's order is loose and contains some pencil underlining and a hard to transcribe note - "I ga??? McClellans f??? at Beverly Post gar." An interesting note on the last page of Chapter 30 - "The First Minnesota at Fredericksburg" (page 275) reads: "Soon after this time Papa was mustered out transferred to Washington D.C. to take charge of Secy. Stanton's private printing - enlisting (for that purpose) in regular army as U.S. Hospital Steward." The "Roster" section contains several notes, check marks, underlining, etc. Some of the notes refer to relatives in the 1st Regiment. The 1st Minnesota Regiment was one of the first to volunteer for service. Governor Ramsey is credited for being the first Governor to volunteer troops for the Union. He happened to be in Washington D.C. at the time of the outbreak of the War. The 1st Minnesota Regiment suffered heavy causalities during its three year service.

        Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie

Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1916. 8vo (23.2 x 15.8 cm). 64 pp. Contemporary quarter crimson calf over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. Original printed wrappers bound in.l The first description of Einstein's "general theory of relativity"and the first dealing with gravity, not to be confused with his 1905 introduction of the more limited "special relativity". This is the official "Sonderdruck" (offprint) from the "Annalen der Physik", Band 49, printed by Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig, with their number 314 on the title page verso (i.e. the true first edition with the pages numbered [1]-64). It includes a preface and an index that are not present in the Annalen-version. According to Weil, "This separate edition is printed on good, strong paper, the wrappers are of strong material too (163 x 243 mm) and it is described now as "t h e o r i g i n a l e d i t i o n" of this classic paper. ... There are several anastatic reprints of it". The rear wrapper lists seven other Barth publications, nearly all on physics and written by Wien, Planck, and Wiener, ending with Wiener, 1909, and Ziehen, 1916. There is also a little known later (1919) reprint, not listed in Weil, which is also dated "1916". However, in that edition the rear wrapper publication list ends with Lorentz (1919), and Wien (1919)! A clean copy, very slightly trimmed, otherwise unaltered. It is rare to see a copy with the contents and wrappers in such a good state. Horblit, 26c; Weil, 80a; PMM, 408.

1916. 4to. 4 pp. on watermarked Albert Mühle paper, small corrections in ink throughout. The ink corrections throughout are small changes to insert capital letters or line breaks where needed, with a couple of small deletions and one word change. - A expressionist poet in his younger years, Becher would later embrace communism and Socialist Realism; following his years in exile during the Nazi period, he settled in East Germany where he became Minister of Culture. - Folded, as for mailing, and with some rumpling and a few creases.

        Choko Taikan [The Yangtse Sights].

Tokyo 1916. 136 full-page b/w photograph plates, including 6 folding panoramas, each with descriptive leaf in English and Japanese languages. Oblong folio. Well-preserved copy bound in publisher's hand-painted silk boards, all edges gilt and in handpainted buckram portfolio by Kohgyo Terazaki. Portfolio weakly marked of use, the book itself near mint. '... fruit of my travels, extending for some ten years, in Central China, during which I took more than one thousand photographs of important cities, towns, commercial and industrial centres, noted historical places and sights, ancient monuments and architectures, and what not that may be found in the Yangtse Valley...In this book are arranged, one after another, the grand and majestic sights and scenes of the Yangtse basin from its upper district of Passhu down to Chingchow and Nanking, in such an order and fashion as to equally appeal to the profound interest of those who are already acquainted with China and of those who are not. Furthermore it has been my effort and hope to give thorough knowledge of geography, history and economic conditions of Central China, that is watered by one of the largest rivers of the world, and where a civilization entirely inherent to the Chinese people has been developed since time immemorial.I wish to invite special attention to the cover design of this album. It is from the brush of Mr. Kohgyo Terazaki, a Japanese artist of great distinction, he himself being a great scholar of things Chinese and an extensive traveler in the great continent which has so many things of interest and import yet to be exploited' [from the preface].

Autograph letter signed ("Marguerite Zelle McLeod"). [Paris], 20. VIII. 1916.

1916. 8vo. 8 pp. on 4 ff. (conjoined leaves). With a contemporary photograph of her in costume. To "Monsieur Petitpied". A wartime letter by Mata Hari in which she tells him about her life, her friends, and about Paris: "Me voilà déjà presque deux mois en voyage et il est vrai je ne vous ai pas encore donné de mes nouvelles. - Her border-crossing and powerful connections would see her executed as a spy the following year. - On Grand Hotel stationery; light toning; together with a period photograph of her in costume.

"Ein Traum". Typed manuscript signed ("Franz Kafka"). [Prague, 1916].

1916. Folio (338 x 211 mm). 2½ pp. on rectos only of a bifolium and a single sheet. With six autograph emendations (including the insertion of the word "und"). Signed typescript of Kafka's short story "Ein Traum" ("A Dream"). "Josef K. träumte...": Kafka's eerie evocation of a dream, in which Josef K. walks on a beautiful day in a cemetery, only to be confronted by his own freshly-dug grave. Although the use of the character "Josef K." suggests a connection with Kafka's novel "The Trial", "Ein Traum" does not obviously conform to the structure and narrative viewpoint of the novel, and seems always to have been a distinct work. The piece first appeared in the collection "Das jüdische Prag", published in Prague by the editors of the Zionist journal "Selbstwehr" early in 1917. It is apparent that the present, previously untraced typescript is the one sent in by Kafka for this purpose: not only does the recorded provenance go back to the editor of "Selbstwehr", Siegmund Kaznelson, but the text of the typescript conforms precisely with the variants of the "Das jüdische Prag" version (notably "anderen" for "andern" on f. 2, lines 22f.). Two other typescripts of the story, one known only from a photocopy, are recorded by the editors of the "Schriften" (Drucke zu Lebzeiten, Apparatband, S. Fischer, 1992, pp. 356ff.): as those, the present version bears minor typographical corrections in Kafka's hand; the paper size of the present typescript is very close to that of their T1. - With printer's annotations ("½ fett Petit", corrected to "Einfache Petit") and number "3" in pencil at upper margin of p.1, as well as a note of publication in "Selbstwehr. Das jüd[ische] Prag". Provenance: Submitted by Kafka to the Zionist periodical "Selbstwehr", at the time edited by Siegmund Kaznelson (1893-1959). Kaznelson was married to Lisa Weltsch, whose cousin Felix was a close friend of Kafka's and was to serve as editor of the "Selbstwehr" from 1919 to 1938. Presented to an unidentified collector by Kaznelson in Berlin, March/April 1936 (note in Hebrew at foot of manuscript); last in a distinguished Israeli collection. Extremely rare: no comparable Kafka typescript is recorded in international auction records of the past four decades.

A Handbook of Arabia. Volume I: General. Volume II: Routes. London, H. M. Stationery Office (Frederick Hall, Oxford) and (vol. 2) Admiralty War Staff, Intelligence Division, [1916]-May 1917.

1916. 8vo. (3)-708, (2) pp., XV pp. of plates. With four folding maps within pouch inside lower cover. 519, (3) pp., IX pp. of plates. Lacks the map, but with a different, supernumerary map within pouch inside lower cover. Modern (vol. 1) and original (vol. 2) blue cloth with giltstamped cover and spine titles (vol. 2 with closing fore-edge flap). Only edition of this rare, secret Naval Intelligence Handbook, compiled by D. G. Hogarth, Keeper of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (and close friend of T. E. Lawrence) for the British Admiralty's new Naval Intelligence Division, intended for the exclusive use of British officers operating on the Arabian Peninsula during the Great War. Although the information contained was classified as confidential, it could "in certain cases be communicated to persons in H.M. Service below the rank of commissioned officer", though officers exercising this power were warned to impart such data only with "due caution and reserve". As the introductory "Note" informs the reader, "The sources from which this work has been compiled include native information obtained since the outbreak of the war [...] Separate chapters are devoted to each of the great districts of Arabia [...] After the area of the territory under review has been defined, its physical character is described unter the subsections of Relief and Climate. Then follow social and political surveys of the district, the former usually arranged under the sub-headings of Population, Life and Appliances, Products and Trade, Currency, and Weights and Measurements, the latter describing the system of Government, Recent History, and Present Politics. The last section of such a chapter is purely geographical and is devoted to the Districts of the territory [...] In a composite chapter, such as that on the Gulf Coast, dealing with several independent territories, the same general arrangement, when practicable, has been followed for each area [...] The plates at the end of each volume have been chosen to illustrate the varieties of country which are characteristic of Arabia". The second volume is devoted "mainly to detailed routes, preceded by two chapters on methods of transport and lines of communication [...] Chapters have been incorporated on Meteorological Observations, Hygiene and Disease, and Vocabularies". All four maps of the first volume (Districts and Town; Orographical Features; Land Surface Features; Tribal Map) are present as called for; the "Key Map of Routes" in the second volume has been replaced by an orographical map of Palestine and Trans-Jordan (1933). While the first volume (I. D. 1128) has been rebound to style (lacking the half-title noting the confidential character of all information contained), the second volume (C. B. 405) is preserved in its original binding as issued, bearing also the copy number "Copy 117" in gilt on the upper cover. A Note of Confidentiality calls attention to "the penalties attaching to any infraction of the Offical Secrets Act". Stamps on flyleaf and pastedown trace its provenance to the Royal Central Asian Society, founded in 1901, and the book remained on the shelf of that Society's secretary when it was renamed the "Royal Society for Asian Affairs" in 1975. This ownership is cancelled in ballpoint, with a note "Sold to Mr. M. Graham" (i.e., Murray Graham, British collector and exploration agent in Arabia, d. 2008). Acquired from UK trade. OCLC 29922535, 775016994. Not in Macro.

Two photograph albums of a British WWI soldier in the Palestine Campaign. Palestine and Egypt, 1916-1918.

1916. Two albums: 116 and 116 (together 232) black-and-white photographs (vintage prints), mostly c. 8 x 6 cm, set in window pages (square and round windows). Meticulously captioned throughout in white and yellow paint. Two photograph albums belonging to a British medical officer serving in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign during the latter part of the First World War. While a few of the images show the fading typical of private photo collections of the type, the majority has retained surprisingly crisp contrast, and many contain fine, well-differentiated detail in spite of the extreme lighting conditions under which they were taken, indicating an unusual proficiency of the photographer in exposing and developing his films. Edward Guest, who has signed his name to both inside front covers, served in the 2/1st East Anglian Field Ambulance, part of the 54th Division's Royal Army Medical Corps in the Territorial Force. The first album offers "photographs of the Suez Canal Zone. Ap[ri]l 1916 to Xmas 1916"; the second "contains views of the advance made by the British across the Sin[ai] desert into Palestine 1917-18". The albums are inscribed "Book 2" and "Book 3", respectively; a former "Book 1", which probably contained photographs of army training in Britain, is not preserved with the set. Among the diverse subjects are the Canal and its environs, the officers and men of the Field Ambulance, "light railways running to outposts", trenches, fortifications, and tent camps (with scenes of camp life), an Indian camel corps and transport camels used as ambulances, fishing from pontoon bridges, as well as views of the desert, an expedition into Sinai, shell-shocked men in Gaza, the ruins of shelled buildings, "Turks amo' train after naval gunnery", camping in a dried-up wadi, soldiers' graves in the desert, "laying telegraph wires" (by camel), "making a railway cutting", a railway accident, a cannon captured from the Turkish army, irrigation pumps and vegetation in Palestine, a "Beduin of Palestine", "Arab girls of P[alestine]", humongous desert insects, market scenes and merchants, grilling camel flesh, and ultimately, street scenes in Jerusalem, views of the city, the Mosque of Omar, and Jericho. - The 54th division was moved to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under General Murray in 1916 and garrisoned the southern part of the Suez Canal. It later joined in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, suffering heavy losses in the Second Battle of Gaza and fighting in the successful Third Battle of Gaza under General Bulfin. By the end of 1917 General Allenby's forces had taken Jerusalem.
