        The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings, inscribed by Churchill to a close friend before publication in the third book

      This is a full set of six British first edition, first printings of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War, inscribed and dated in the third book by Churchill (two days before publication) to his "oldest friend" Jack Seely. Inked on the ffep of 1916-1918 Part I in four lines is "Jack Seely / from / Winston S. Churchill / 1.3.27". John Edward Bernard Seely (1868-1947), 1st Baron Mottistone CB, CMG, DSO, PC, TD, was Churchill's close friend, comrade in arms, and political ally for nearly half a century. His life and career remarkably parallel and entwine Churchill's, with a particularly strong bond during the First World War, both in politics and on the Front. As boys, Seely and Churchill both attended Harrow. Both earned distinction in the Boer War and parlayed war records into election to Parliament in the "Khaki election" of 1900. Churchill and Seely quickly became political allies and confidantes. Both left the Conservative party, becoming Liberals in 1904. Both joined the Liberal Government Cabinet in 1908. In 1911 Churchill became First Lord of the Admiralty and in 1912 Seely became Secretary of State for War. Both were forced out of the Cabinet - Seely for the Curragh Incident in 1914 and Churchill for the Dardanelles in 1915 - and both subsequently chose to serve on the Front. While on active service in Europe, the two friends arranged to see one another often and continued to correspond throughout the war. In 1916, Churchill wrote to Seely "Good luck to you my dear - count on me if the moment comes when I am worth anything again." Churchill was the first to be politically rehabilitated, returning to the Cabinet as Minister of Munitions in 1917. Seely would write from Flanders "I am so glad, not only for your sake who at last have an outlet for energies and talents, but even more for all of us who want so badly just what you can give." While Seely continued to serve with gallant distinction, Churchill faithfully advocated for a Ministerial appointment for him. In 1918, after retiring from active military service, Seely campaigned for Churchill in Dundee. When Churchill became Secretary of State for Air and War in 1919, he brought in Seely as Under-Secretary for Air. Though Seely chafed at his failure to secure his own ministry and ultimately resigned in frustration, the friendship endured. Churchill wrote to Seely "I did whatever was in my power wh sincere & old friendship suggested to assist yr return from the military to the political arena. Had greater offices been in my sphere of influence, I wd have found one for you." In 1924, both Seely and Churchill rejoined the Conservative Party. In 1927, when this book was inscribed, Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer and Seely Chairman of the National Savings Commission (a post he held from 1926-1943). Two years later, Churchill wrote to Stanley Baldwin urging that Seely be given a peerage; Seely was created Baron Mottistone in 1933. The inscribed 1916-1918 Part I book is in near-fine condition. The binding is square, clean, and tight, with only very light shelf wear and minor wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are bright and crisp. Spotting is mostly confined to the prelims and page edges, of course including the inscribed ffep. Nonetheless, the inscription is excellent, with no age-spreading or smudging of the ink. The remaining five volumes make this a very nice set indeed with superior spine presentation. The bindings are uniformly clean with bright gilt and only light shelf wear, mostly confined to extremities. The contents are uniformly clean and tight. Light spotting is confined to text block edges and the prelims of two volumes. The Eastern Front and The Aftermath both have a single neat previous owner name inked on the ffep. The 1911-1914 volume bears an inked inscription on the ffep dated 4 May 1923. We find no other ownership marks. Bibliographic reference: A69.2(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A31(ab), Langworth p.105.

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM (1916) WITH REMAINS OF PRINTED GLASSINE WRAPPER, 128 x 110 mm, 5 x 4¼ inches, buff boards, lettered dark brown, round colour plate onlaid, colour illustrated endpapers, 53 pages, frontispiece and 14 lovely colour plates. Slightest wear at head and tail of spine, neat inscription on front endpaper dated 1916, few slight pale fingermarks to contents. A very good plus copy in remains of printed glassine DUSTWRAPPER, inner flaps complete with all printing, 2/3 of spine missing and large piece missing on lower panel, 65 x 85 wide maximum (2½ x 4 inches), with some loss of text in lower half, large corner missing on unprinted upper panel. The first edition in book form was published somewhere between 1913 (Quinby) and 1916 (Linder) and does not list Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes on the notice board on the rear endpaper. This copy is disbound, with some wear to the spine. There is some moderate soiling and edge wear to the outer wrappers, and a closed tear partway across the front wrapper (not touching text or illustration); basically very good otherwise. Internally the sheets are all clean, with no stains or blemishes. Sensational grotesques by Austin Spare, several double-page; also art by Charles Ricketts, Frederick Carter, Frank Brangwyn, and others. Literary contributors include De la Mare & Yeats.

      1916. Colophon, stating that the manuscript was designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski for Riviere & Sons, and that it will not be duplicated, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. Alberto Sangorski Vellum Illuminated Manuscript In a Stunning Inlaid Binding by Riviere & Son 213 x 159 mm (8 3/8 x 6 1/4"). 16 vellum leaves (including five blanks). SIMPLY STUNNING DARK BLUE MOROCCO, ELABORATELY INLAID AND GILT, BY RIVIERE & SON (unsigned, but assigned to them by the artist), covers with central red morocco escutcheon featuring a rampant lion on a field of densely stippled gilt with the royal crown above it in red morocco and gilt, the crown and shield both inside a blue mandorla decorated with twining vines, the mandorla, in turn, enclosed by a large frame with lobed cornerpieces, this frame heavily stippled with gilt and inlaid with curling acanthus leaves in green, ochre, purple, and red morocco, the whole within an exuberantly decorated gilt border outlined by a thin strip of inlaid black morocco and filled with gracefully swirling vines and curls, each of the four sides of the frame with an ochre morocco-outlined, gilt-latticed compartment with one or two inlaid thistles in green, purple, and gilt, raised bands, spine gilt in similarly stippled compartments containing an inlaid acanthus leaf, turn-ins with inlaid black morocco strips enclosing a repeating pattern of gilt leaves, berries, and azured acanthus leaves, ivory watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. In a (slightly rubbed) dark green morocco box with raised bands, gilt titling, silk and velvet lining, and brass closures. Designed and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski with 13 three- to four-line initials in red or blue, five red initials of similar size with penwork, two four-line initials in green, purple, and burnished gold, and SIX LARGE ILLUMINATED INITIALS (measuring approximately 55 x 45 mm.) Firth and signed with Sangorski's cipher (dated 1916), the miniature in a shield-shaped frame with flowering cornerpieces and a burnished gold fleur-de-lys at the top, and below the miniature, a small indigo escutcheon featuring a burnished gold "M" with a crown, all on a black background with purple vines, the closing pages with frames having pointed lobe cornerpieces, those of one frame with burnished gold fleurs-de-lys, those of the other with purple and green thistle blossoms on a penwork background. Ratcliffe, "Hidden Treasures," SJR-338. A SPLENDID COPY, exceptionally clean, fresh, and bright inside and out. Calligrapher and illuminator Alberto Sangorski (1862-1932) was the older brother of Francis Sangorski, co-founder of the renowned Sangorski & Sutcliffe bindery. Alberto, who had started his professional life as secretary to a goldsmith's firm, became attracted to the book arts at the age of 43 and began doing illuminated manuscripts that were then bound by his brother's firm. Sometime around 1910 Alberto and Francis had a falling out, and the artist went to work for the rival Riviere bindery, for which our manuscript was done. Stephen Ratcliffe suggests that the disagreement may have stemmed from Alberto's desire to receive credit for his work, and the fact that his manuscripts for Riviere have a signed colophon, as seen here, would seem to support this claim. Sangorski chose somber but beautiful colors for the illuminations in Swinburne's "Adieux à Marie Stuart," reflecting the tragic fate of the young queen who tearfully bade adieu to her beloved France to assume the throne of Scotland. An epigram facing the title page quotes her as saying, in French, "Adieu, charming France, the country I cherish, cradle of my childhood happiness! To leave you is to die"--a prediction that was sadly fulfilled. Swinburne's poem is an attempt to bid farewell to an unhappy queen who lost her head, but won the hearts of romantics through the ages. The workmanship here is first rate, as are the materials used, and the book is a shimmering example of 20th century handcrafted book art. Sangorski's one-of-a-kind manuscripts are highly prized in collections and in the marketplace, and they are more and more difficult to find now in the sort of pristine condition seen here.

        Henry Callender Esq

      [circa 1916]. () Very good. Colour Litho print. 51 X 38 CM (20 X 15 inches). In black painted frame measuring 84 X 71 CM (33 X 28 inches) with green-grey matting. Frame is somewhat worn. Golfer Henry Callender, one of the pioneers of golf in England, is depicted in the Field Marshall's uniform of the Blackheath Society of Golfers. This style of uniform is still worn by the present holder of the post on formal occasions. It is thought that the term Field Marshall was used at Royal Blackheath before the military use in the British army. The two golf clubs illustrated are still in the collection of Royal Blackheath Golf Club. Engraved by Walter Alfred Cox (1862-p.1894).

One of 175 numbered copies of this catalogue created for the seminal 1915 British Red Cross Exhibit. 2415 artifacts or sets of objects were displayed at this exhibition held during the height of World War I, most here illustrated including examples of netsuke, lacquer, swords, prints, drawings, ceramics, tsuba, bronze, and other metalwork. An important and scarce early text on Japanese arts and crafts.

These emblems were engraved for the "Devil's Devices or Control versus Service," a book written by Douglas Pepler and published at the Hampshire House Workshops, Hammersmith, London on Saint Thomas' day, 1915. This edition printed by Douglas Pepler and Eric Gill on the Feast of the Purification 1916. GILL 260. Archival tape repair to spine, fore-edge frayed with some loss.

Bound with orig. wrappers and untrimmed in a nice contemporary half-calf binding. Bookplates on front pastedown.. One of 350 numbered copies. Printed by Danish master-printer Kristian Kongstad. Emanuel Goldstein (1862-1921) had earlier - in 1886, under the pseudonym Hugo Falck - published these "psychological" poems under the title "Vekselspillet". They were reissued in 1892 under Goldstein's real name. Munch and Goldstein were friends, and Munch agreed to illustrate this edition, which were issued in only 350 copies, with a motive catching the emotional atmosphere of Goldstein's symbolistic poetry

      London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1916. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spine. Folding general map and 13 full-page sketch maps and plans. A very good copy. First edition. Mounted on the front pastedown an excellent single-page autograph letter, signed from Doyle to Sir Julian Corbett, naval historian and primary author of Naval Operations, the official history of Britain's war at sea 1914-8, in which he reflects upon his failure to secure the role of official historian of the campaign in France and Belgium; "I have asked them to send you a copy of my '1914' … I hope that it may interest you, and that you will find it as accurate as my divorce from official papers permits. I recognise that it was to your good offices that I owed the permission to get on with it." He goes on to remark, "I am actually up to the Somme now, tho' much puzzled by the complications of that battle …" Written on a slant through the address at the head of the letter, Doyle has added a note; "I send you something else (enclosed) on a subject which either repels or attracts violently." Perhaps a spiritualist pamphlet? An attractive association copy.

        Autograph musical quotation signed ("C. Saint-Saëns") from the composer's song La Cloche

      5 measures of a vocal line with underlying text, "Seule en ta sombre tour aux faîtes dentelés," notated in ink on a leaf measuring ca. 130 x 185 mm., signed and dated 1916. Attractively matted in two windows and framed in decorative gilt together with a photographic image of the composer. Overall size ca. 315 x 475 mm. & & Leaf slightly browned; small area of foxing; slightly creased at lower edge. . "Like Mozart, to whom he was often compared, [Saint-Saëns] was a brilliant craftsman, versatile and prolific, who contributed to every genre of French music. He was one of the leaders of the French musical renaissance of the 1870s... Saint-Saëns wrote songs throughout his career, setting the poetry of Lamartine, Hugo and Banville as well as his own verses. The style naturally varies with the subject, but many songs reveal his vivid pictorial sense and his gift for caricature." Sabina Teller Ratner in Grove online& & La Cloche, composed ca. 1885 to text by Victor Hugo and dedicated to the distinguished singer Pauline Viardot (1821-1910), was first published in 1886.

        Southern Tibet:

      Stockholm: Lithographic Institute of the General Staff of the Swedish Army, , 1916-22. Discoveries in Former Times Compared with my Own Researches in 1906–1908. 9 text volumes in quarto, folio volume of panoramas, and 2 folio portfolios of maps, together with quarto prospectus, 13 volumes in all. Original printed card wraps, except volume III which is a well-made facsimile, later printed custom dust jackets, preserved in matching cream cloth slipcases with maps of Tibet laid down on upper covers. Text volumes contain over 300 plates, some in colour, a few double-page or folding, and around 250 maps, panorama volume with 105 double-page plates, map portfolios with 99 maps, most double-page, prospectus has 6 half-tone plates, 2 double-page coloured plates and 2 folding maps, one coloured. Some wear and browning of the wraps, particularly to spines, a few minor chips, light toning to the text, particularly in the earlier volumes, but overall very good. First and only edition. "Hedin's travels [drew] him increasingly into what Lord Curzon regarded as the British sphere of interest, and a well-orchestrated effort was set in motion to draw the Swede closer into the British camp … However, his determination to reach Lhasa finally dissipated after Younghusband's mission of 1904, the justification for which Hedin needed some convincing of … With Curzon's approval Hedin therefore set about planning a second expedition to Tibet, his motivation being entirely scientific." (Howgego) The removal of Curzon from India and the decision of the new Liberal government that Hedin should not be allowed into Tibet under any circumstances only spurred the furious Swede on. He quickly assembled a caravan at Srinagar and made his way to Leh from Ladakh, "By the time word got through to the British representative in Leh, ordering him to restrain Hedin by force if necessary, the Swede was already on his way to Tibet." Carried out in two "campaigns," driven by the belief that this might be his last opportunity to fill the remaining "vast blanks on the map," Hedin's survey was an incomparable feat of Himalayan exploration. "The most important and comprehensive collection of material relating to Tibet up to the date of publication. Not only does it include detailed accounts of Transhimalaya, the Karakoram, Chang Tang and Lake Manasarowar regions, but also in-depth studies of previous explorers of the region, and a particularly important collection of maps of the entire area." A very good or better example of the exceedingly uncommon first issue bound in the original beige wrappers not the second issue black wrappers with the blue printed paper label on the upper cover. Content very clean & fresh, free of any blemish, the covers showing light use, a bit of strategic archival restoration to the Yap edges & spine extremities; there is a mildly darkened spot on the front cover & slight darkening on the rear. "Das Urteil," is one of Kafka's greatest compositions, here, first published Separately by Wolff as part of the "Der Jungste Tag" series. "Das Urteil," or "The Judgment," originally appeared as a contribution in the 1913 Wolff published anthology, "Arkadia", edited by Max Brod. "Das Urteil," is perhaps the most perfect composition amongst all of Kafka's short stories; it tells of the complex relationship between Georg, his father, his fiancé & his friend in St. Petersburg. It is fashionable, particularly among those who have read Freud, to suggest that "Das Urteil," concerns Georg's sense of inferiority in comparison to his father. Yet, this being Kafka, "Das Urteil" is not about a sense of common inferiority, but of an inferiority so indisputable that it seems to have been ordained, such that Georg's father can accuse & convict his son of such misdeeds that he sentences his son to death by drowning. The sentence is so plainly justified that Georg rushes into the outdoors & throws himself off of a bridge. It is this ability to state the fantastic so plainly, with such an air of inevitability & justice, that marks Kafka's profundity & is of primary importance to his greatness as a writer. This is not an offprint of the journal issue in the <i>Annalen der Physik</i>, but a completely new setting of type with significant additions and revisions, including an introduction published here for the first time. Weil 80a; Boni 78.1; Norman 696. <br/><br/>& & &#147;This separate edition is printed on good, strong paper, the wrappers are of strong material too, and it is described now as &#145;the original edition&#146; of this classic paper&#148; (Weil). There were several reprints and facsimiles. Weil distinguishes the first issue (as here) by paper size and by the printers mark (&#145;Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig&#146;) on the verso of the title page, with the shortened form on rear wrap which lists seven items published by Barth and dated 1909 to 1916, ending with Ziehen&#146;s Die Psychologie (1916).& 8vo (245 x 165 mm), uncut in the original buff printed wrappers, spine strip with a 3 cm tear to the buttom, extremeties with light wear, some light discolering to front wrapper, but in all a very good and unrepaired copy in its original state, pp 64.

        Album of Original Watercolours and Sketches, By Various Artists, During the First World War

      New Zealand, 1916. Oblong 8vo. Album containing 7 watercolours and 4 sketch drawings, by various artists, most created during the First World War, dating from March 1916 to August 1918. With exception of only one, all are signed in the original by the artist; most are dated as well. Ownership initials to front endpaper read R.L. Hall, possibly from New Zealand. Brown soft leather boards, front corner chipped, some leafs delicate at hinge, otherwise in Very Good Condition, with beautiful artistic works. In this album, not one, but several watercolourists and humorists provide both reality and relief in wartime by visual means. Containing diverse images of the Great War which was then underway, and by some means associated with New Zealand, this is a most uncommon collection of watercolours and drawings. G. Taylor, possibly well-known war artist Grace Taylor who was then in New Zealand, paints a dark scene of a British ground attack aircraft shooting a German reconnaissance zeppelin, and other aircraft which have caught fire in the sky. Germany employed Zeppelins for reconnaissance over the North Sea and strategic bombing raids over England. (Grace Taylor, 1897-1988, was born in Britain, emigrating to New Zealand with her family in 1902. In 1924 she enrolled in figure drawing at the Elam School of Art, Auckland. Working as a commercial artist, she moved to Sydney in 1926 and then Brisbane in 1933. In 1942 she was accepted into the AWLA as a field officer, responsible for members&#146; administration.) Also indicative of the war are the comic relief drawings, one which depicts the Hauraki Regiment in a &#39;Sham Fight&#39; which took place in the environs of Tirau and Hautapu, New Zealand, artist Bert B. Colkin, 1916. Another, an anonymous watercolour, illustrates a German soldier prostrate in the metal casing of the low-flying Junkers J1 monoplane, looking for enemy regiments along the seashore. A most provocative image of an African woman ensconced in billowy garments, holding a rifle as she waits in an empty corridor, is inscribed &#39;Madeira 1921&#39; and signed E.H. Fripp W.J.C. Unrelated to the war, a detailed ink drawing by C.O. Verschoren depicts an Australian &#39;Campagna Drover&#39;. In contrast, a few works render splendid views of exotic and historic places. A most enrapturing watercolour by R. Levens illustrates an exquisite sailing vessel near the shores of a Mediterranean city. Both striking and serene is a full page watercolour Chillon Castle, the medieval fortress on the shores of Lake Geneva, a second entry by G. Taylor. Delicate stem roses, redolent of more harmonious days past, are painted by an artist named Reita Sharpe, dated 24 August 1918. (Possibly Reita Sharpe born 2 December 1900, Kent, Sussex, United Kingdom.) A scarce collection of works by numerous artists, one might speculate that R.L. Hall, who solicited the varied artistic works, was perhaps a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours or the Royal Watercolour Society, both founded in 1804. .

In the first, to the Editor of The Gipsy and dated 30 April 1915, Phillpotts offers "a new work of mine - &#39;The girl & the Faun&#39; is a quaint thing, of which I&#39;ll say nothing save that I should much like you to see it ." In the second letter, dated 25 July 1915, Phillpotts writes, "My dear Savage, I am sorry to report that Brangwyn doesn&#39;t like the thought of &#39;The Girl & the Faun&#39; being published serially before our book publication after war. I have only just heard this & as it would be a serious thing if he chucked it, I will ask you to let me have it again. I feel this a great deal, for publication in your distinguished paper would have been a joy; but I was committed to F. Brangwyn a long time ago & it will be rather a serious thing if I don&#39;t go through with him. Of course he has no claim & if you think it worth while raising the question I will; but I expect you&#39;ve got plenty of good stuff & can let me have &#39;The Girl & the Faun&#39; without difficulty. HANSHIN MEISHO-ZUE A folding album of 24 (of 30) prints - oban size color woodcut, printed by Nishimura Kumakichi and published by Kanao Bun'endo in 1916,17. The finest of all of Bun'endo's remarkable porfolio productions, The HANSHIN MEISHO ZUE is a great rarity, even individual prints from the series of 30 are by no means common. We are missing only prints #7, 21-25 (6 in all). There are two prefatory pages, one is a map of the trip around western Japan depicted herein, the other a table of contents. Also, one of the Akamatsu Rinsaku designed portfolio cover prints has been mounted as preface to the whole series, while four others have been trimmed and mounted on two pages at the end. The artists who designed the prints were Akamatsu Rinsaku (1878- 1953), Noda Kyuho (1879-1971), Hata Tsuneharu(1883-? ), Mizushima Nihou (or Nihofu) (1884-1958) and Nagai Hyosai (1882-1945). For more on this remarkable work, see Charles Mitchell's article in ESSAYS ON JAPANESE ART PRESENTED TO JACK HILLIER. Our copy is very clean in a new brocade over stiff paper covers with a hand-brushed title label. There is a bit of foxing, but it is confined to the stubs upon which the prints are mounted. The images themselves are lovely and extrememly well-printed.

Captioned, "The professor's piercing eye took in the room with a sharper glance than usual. (Surprises) " Signed lower right "Tony Sarg 16". Fine. Reed, The Illustrator in America, p. 141 . An attractive illustration, presumably for the story "Surprises", and a nice contrast between youth and age. Tony Sarg (1882-1942) was born in Guatemala, studied in Germany, and began his career doing illustrations and advertisements in London. Coming to America in 1914, he became a noted illustrator, working for a large number of publishers and advertisers and writing and illustrating several children's books of his own. In addition, he designed textiles, wallpaper, boxes, rugs, glass and pottery, and indulged his particular fancy for marionettes. He experimented with early animated cartoons, and designed some of the gigantic balloons for the annual Macy Thanksgiving parades in New York City

      Leipzig, Kurt Wolff, 1916. Bound with the original printed wrappers in an elegant private light brown half morocco binding, with elegant patterned paper over boards (presumably Bindesbøll-paper), the pattern of which is repeated in the magnificent gilding to the spine. Two edges uncut, top-edge gilt. Gilt super-ex-libris to inside of front board. The binding is unsigned, but is executed by the famous binders of Kysters Efterfølgere, the gilding is by Hagel Olsen. A bit of light soiling to wrappers, otherwise a very fine and clean copy.. The uncommon first edition in book form of Kafka's fourth book, "The Judgment", with the scarce correct first state cream-coloured wrappers (as opposed to the black wrappers with the blue title, which were made later for the remainder of the issue). Kafka's seminal short-story "The Judgment" marks the discovery of Kafka's literary self-consciousness and explores for the first time the theme which became so dominant in his writings: the guilt-steeped struggle between father and son. It occupies a central place in his authorship, marking the turning-point in his career. He wrote it at the age of 29, in a single night, describing the coming-to-be of the work as "the total opening of body and soul", written in "semi-unconscious state of mind", stating that "the story quite literarally came out of me like a regular birth, covered with filth and slime". He considered it one of his most successful and perfect literary creations. Being enthusiastic about the work, Kafka had it published almost immediately, and it appered for the first time in the literary yearbook "Arkadia" in 1913 and then for the first time, slightly corrected, in book form, as it is here, as the 34th volume in Wolff's famous series "Der jüngste Tag"."And then, out of this tangle of new wmotion and old frustration, and excited literary expectation, on the night of 22 September 1912, Kafka sat down at his desk, in his room at No. 36 Niklasstrasse, at 10 p.m., and wrote without a break until the light of the new day. He had come through a Sunday "so miserable I could have screamed (I has spent the entire afternoon silently circling around my brother-in-law's relatives, who were on their first visit to us)", He had completed at one sitting - "in einem Zug" - the story "Das Urtheil"/"The Judgment". It was rightly perceived by Kafka as a breakthrough.Interesting as the "Betrachtung" pieces were, the bold narrative confidence and dramatic clarity of "The Judgment" signalled a leap forward in Kafka's fictional technique". The first edition of Saussure's seminal main work, which marks a turning point in the history of linguistics and had a monumental impact on related field such as philosophy, logic, sociology, literary theory, etc. Because of this work, Saussure is considered the father of 20th century linguistics, and the influence of his ideas on the development of linguistic theory in the first half of the 20th century can hardly be overstated.After having published his "Mémoire sur le système primitif des voyelles dans les langues indo-européenes" in 1878, Saussure did not publish another full-length work in his life-time, and his "Course in General Linguistics" is a summary of the three lecture-courses he gave on linguistics at the University of Geneva in 1906-07, 1908-09 and 1910-11. The work was published posthumously by two of his former students and based on lecture notes. In this monumental work, based on his lectures, Saussure sets out to examine the relationship between language (langue) and speaking (parole), both as the relation of a social phenomenon to an individual phenomenon, and as the relation of a system to the concrete use of this system. He determines that there is a structured system of common signs between the users of a language, and that language can be analyzed as a formal system of elements. These elements are signs, signs that again can be divided into expression (signifiant) and content (signifié). This theory of language has deeply influenced all later theories of language.With this work, Ferdinand Saussure (1857-1913) thus came to occupy a seminal place in the history of language theory. In this work he is strongly focused on creating a science of language, free of its former embedment in archaeology, psychology, and also -or perhaps especially- the history of language. And he succeeds. Before his work, linguistics had had been dominated by a historical, though also partly structural, understanding of language, but now, Saussure introduced and determined the purpose and meaning of linguistics, the universal science of language. With Sausurre, linguistics now became, not only the study of the history of languages and of the influences that determine the development of it, but also, and primarily, the study of language and the study of the manifestations of human speech, of what makes human speech possible.Thus, there is no doubt as to the monumental impact of this groundbreaking work, and almost all language theoreticians ever since have been deeply influenced by it. In Europe, the Prague School with e.g. Roman Jakobson and the Copenhagen School with e.g. Louis Hjelmslev, and in America, Leonard Bloomfield and his followers (later Noam Chomsky), were all influenced by Saussure's theories and based their formings of structural linguistics on his basic notions.Saussure's work reached much farther, though, and the principles of structuralism came to deeply influence thinkers such as Jacques Lacan, Claude Lévi-Strauss etc., etc
