Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book. Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations.

London, Hodder and Stoughton, 1916.. 4°. Frontispiece, 169 pages plus 15 tipped-in illustrations by Edmund Dulac (including frontispice). Collation complete. Original, illustrated cloth. The binding in very good+ condition. All the illustrations in place and in excellent condition. Original endpapers in excellent condition.. Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac, October 22, 1882 - May 25, 1953) was a French book illustrator. Born in Toulouse, France, he began his career by studying law at the University of Toulouse. He also studied art, switching to it full time after he became bored with law, and having won prizes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He spent a very brief period at the Academie Julian in Paris in 1904 before moving to London. In London, the 22-year old Frenchman was picked up by J.M. Dent and given a commission to illustrate Jane Eyre. He then began an association with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery commissioned paintings from Dulac which they sold; the rights to the paintings were purchased by Hodder & Stoughton, who used them as illustrations in illustrated books, publishing one book a year. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from The Arabian Nights in 1907, with 50 colour images; an edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest in 1908, with 40 colour illustrations; The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in 1909, with 20 colour images; The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales in 1910; Stories from Hans Christian Andersen in 1911; The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe in 1912, with 28 colour images and many monotone illustrations; and Princess Badoura in 1913. Dulac became a naturalized British Citizen on Feb 17 1912. During World War I he contributed to relief books, including King Albert's Book, Princess Mary's Gift Book, and, unusually, his own Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross (1915) (including 20 colour images). Hodder and Stoughton also published The Dreamer of Dreams (1915) (including 6 colour images) - a work composed by the then Queen of Romania. (Wikipedia)

["On a Boat" / "Ferry over the Sumida"]. [Mokuhan junjozuri].

Tokyo, The Shimbi Shoin Ltd., (1916).. Duodecimo. Pp. 4 (Introduction in English), and 20 (i.e. 40) double leaves, folded once in Japanese style, comprising of 20 progressive plates, numbered 1-20, printed from wood blocks. Captioned in English and Japanese. Letterpress tail-piece. Bound in traditional oriental format, tied with red silken threads, upper wrapper hand-printed in full colour from 20 blocks. In a very good condition (minute chip to blank corner-tip of one leaf, well away from image). A lovely book, beautifully preserved. ~ First edition. A second edition apparently appeared in 1938. "The prints made by the process of woodcut printing reproduce the slightest touch of the brush and the most delicate shades of colours in the original, the result being such as can hardly be attained by lithographs." (From the Introduction.) Through 20 progressive colour spreads, each showing separately the added colour and the result on the print itself, the book creates, step by step, a charming, full-colour reproduction, made from 20 different blocks, apparently reproducing Kiyonaga's "Ferry over the Sumida". Very rare..

Autograph letter signed ("Marguerite Zelle McLeod").

[Paris], 20. VIII. 1916.. 8vo. 8 pp. on 4 ff. (conjoined leaves). With one addendum (s. b.).. To "Monsieur Petitpied". A wartime letter by Mata Hari in which she tells him about her life, her friends, and about Paris: " Me voila deja presque deux mois en voyage et il est vrai je ne vous ai pas encore donne de mes nouvelles. - Her border-crossing and powerful connections would see her executed as a spy the following year. - On Grand Hotel stationery; light toning; together with a period photograph of her in costume.

Typed letter signed and a covering autograph letter signed.

[London], 20. VI. 1916.. Large 8vo and 4to. Altogether (1 [autogr.] + 2 =) 3 pp. on 4 ff.. To the editor of the Press Association: a letter for distribution to the press clarifying the circumstances under which, although not a member of the Government, he had come to issue a reassuring statement about the Battle of Jutland, which had occasioned much comment. The interview was the result of a personal request from the First Lord of the Admiralty (Balfour), whom he had called on the previous evening, "we were in complete agreement on the estimate to be formed of the Naval encounter, viz. that the enemy had been driven into port and that we were safer at Home and stronger afloat as a result". - The Battle of Jutland of May 31/June 1 had initially been announced as a German victory, and Churchill's statement (which tallies more closely with the historical consensus) was intended to reassure. The statement, and its effect on the stock markets, was to form the basis of an elaborate anti-Semitic libel by Lord Alfred Douglas against Churchill and his relationship with Sir Ernest Cassel. As Churchill was still out of office at this stage, his role as a semi-official government spokesman is curious. - The autograph letter with embossed letterhead "41, Cromwell Road, S. W."; both letters with annotations by recipient; with two related press cuttings.

Fotoalbum des Soldaten Willy Strobel von der Ostfront im Ersten Weltkrieg.

Verschiedene Orte in Polen, Weißrussland und der Ukraine, 1916-1918.. Folio. September 1917." "Ankunft seiner Majestät auf der Straße Kowel-Luck. Vorm Divisions Quartier. Juli 1917". - Eine Auswahl der auf den Fotos und Karten genannten Orte aus der Ukraine, Weißrussland und Polen: Holoby, Charkow, Kowel, Brest-Litowsk, Pinsk, Gonczy-Brod, Poginki, Siedlec sowie der Fluß Stochid, Oginski Kanal und Rokidnosümpfe.

Arrangement of the Chinese Characters according to an Alphabetical System with Japanese Dictionary of 8000 Characters and List of 22000 Charakters.

Tokyo, Kobunsha, 1916.. 15, (546) pp. Green clothbound (original) volume with gold-embossed title along spine and blind-tooled publisher's mark on front. Illustrated endpaper with floral ornamentation. Famous study of Russian Orientalist, Sinologist and scholar of Japanese Studies Otto Julius Rosenberg (1888 - 1919) on a system of classification of Chinese characters. Rosenberg studied from 1906 to 1911 at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of St. Petersburg, lectured by, among others, the founder of the Russian school of Indology, Sergei Oldenburg (1863 - 1934). During a study stay in Bonn in 1909, Rosenberg befriended Hermann Jacobi (1850-1937), the greatest Indologist and Sanskrit scholar of that time. As part of an internship at the Department of Oriental Languages (SOS) at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität two years later, he also befriended the German linguist and scholar of Japanese studies, Rudolf Lange (1850 - 1933). From 1912 to 1916 he studied Buddhist Literature and Tradition at the University of Tokyo. Here Rosenberg became acquainted with the then leading Buddhist Scholars of Japan. In the course of this stay, he explored the school of Zen Buddhism as one of the first Western scientists and also became an expert for Japanese and Chinese characters used in the writing of Chinese and Japanese. In 1924, his work "The problems of Buddhist philosophy" was published in German. Based on ideas of Russian Sinologist and Buddhologist Vasily Vasilyev (1818 - 1900), Rosenberg developed a method of classification of Chinese and Japanese characters. He published the results of his research in a dictionary which was published in English and Japanese and which formed the basis of the so-called "Four Corner Method", which is still employed today in the creation of Chinese and Japanese dictionaries. This volume is extremely rare and, according to the world's largest bibliographic database, WorldCat, it is only found in six libraries worldwide. The copy offered here was purchased from a Japanese private collection.. Boards slightly stained (esp. back cover), otherwise good copy of an extremely rare and fragile item of considerable scientific work with regards to the disclosure of far-eastern language systems. We think our set is not lacking anything and higher numbers of maps and plates recorded are the result of counting sheets instead of maps, text figures instead of plates, etc. A check of auction records reveals that only four copies have sold in the past 25 years, the most recent of which was at Sotheby's in 2002, fetching 8,500 (not including a 20% buyer premium). All plates in this collection are intact, as published, and in excellent condition. "Southern Tibet" is the scientific result of Sven Hedin's (1865-1952) third and most prosperous journey into Central Asia. From 1906 to 1908, Hedin "crossed Persia and Afghanistan, entered Tibet, and identified the true sources of the Indus, Sutlej, and Brahmaputra rivers. He discovered and mapped the Transhimalayan Mountains, crossing the range eight times and overcoming formidable obstacles of winter weather, mountain passes never crossed before, and hostile local tribesmen, who kept Hedin prisoner for a time." (Encyclopedia of World Biography p. 252) Popular narratives of this expedition were published as Overland to India (1910) and Trans-Himalaya (1909-1913). The vast collection of maps, both historical (from Humboldt, for example, or several from Bernier's narrative dated 1670) and contemporary, as well as photographs and panoramic chromolithography make "Southern Tibet" a distinguished and desirable work. The "last of the classical explorers," this book showcases Hedin in his prime as a great explorer, writer, and artist. "His vigorous health, physical endurance, powerful will, endless patience, and apparently reckless courage many times brought him through seemingly hopeless situations. Using only simple means, he blazed trails through vast unknown areas, preparing the way for trained scientists." "On all his lone journeys Hedin carried out continuous route mapping by means of carefully measured compass traverses with astronomic control. From points along the route line he sketched panoramas of the landscape with remarkable accuracy, often taking in the whole horizon. Together the route maps and panoramas give a very clear picture of the topography. This method enabled Hedin to produce, unassisted, a picture of the geomorphology of vast areas of Tibet which would otherwise have required an elaborate topographical survey." Hedin combined his route mapping with a systematic collection of rock specimens along all routes where rocks were exposed and made notes on their appearance in the field. Therefore the geological results of his journeys in Tibet were also pioneering. He made available the first knowledge of the widespread marine transgression over the Tibetan plateau during the later part of the Cretaceous, when the plateau was reduced to low relief." And yet Hedin's pioneering work didn't stop there. He was one of the first involved in botanical explorations in the area. As is noted in vol. VI, "The main interest lies in the Tibetan plants since this great highland area is far from sufficiently explored; the Eastern Pamir also traversed by Dr. Hedin requires further botanical [research] as the few plants brought home in several cases were either new to science or at least new to the area." A full collation is as follows: Vol. I: xxxii (including title) 293 pp., plus one b&w photographic plate and 53 maps (10 folding); Vol. II: xi (including title), 330 pp., plus 82 illustrations in 58 plates (including one double-page chromolithograph and one fold-out) and 24 maps (five of which are two-page or folding); Vol. III: xi, 369 pp. plus 99 illustrations in 72 plates (including 8 chromolithographs, three of which are folding panoramas) and 31 maps (19 of which are folding); Vol. IV: xi (including title) 428 pp. plus 160 illustrations on 127 plates (including four photogravures) and 33 panoramas (nine of which are photographs and 24 of which are chromolithographs); Vol. V: 220 pp. (excluding title page in English) plus 11 b&w photographic plates and two double-page maps; Vol. VI: [3] preliminary leaves, part I "Die meteorologischen Beobachtungen" vii, 133 pp., part II "Les observations astronomiques" 86 pp. (including title pages), part III "Botany" pp. [1-101], part IV "Bacillariales aus Innerasien" pp.[105]-152, part V "Algen aus Zentralasien" pp.[153]-193, plus 11 specimen plates; Vol. VII: x, [1] leaf, 605 pp., plus 21 illustrations on 19 plates (eight of which are photogravures and two of which are landscapes drawn by the author) and 103 maps (26 plates of which are folding); Vol. VIII: xvi (including title page) 456 pp., plus 29 maps (25 of which are either double-page or folding); Vol. IX: [4] preliminary leaves, part I "Journeys in Eastern Pamir" pp. [4]-85, part II "Ostturkische Namenliste" pp. [87]-123, part III, "Zur Geologie von Ost-Pamir" pp. [125]-180, part IV, " Eine Chinesische Beschreibung von Tibet" pp. [1]-66, part IV "Das Goldstromland" pp. [67]-130, part V "General index" pp. [1]-176, plus 26 illustrations on 13 plates (seven of which contain 14 drawings by the author) and four maps (three of which are folding); Vol. X: "Atlas of Tibetan Panoramas" [2] leaves (including title page), 10 pp. plus 105 folio plates; Vol. XI: "Maps I" in loose folio sheets [1] (including title page) plus index map (one sheet), "General map of central Asia and Tibet" (one sheet - broken spine), "General map of east Turkestan and Tibet" (15 sheets), "Special map of Dr. Sven Hedin's Route Through Tibet 1906-1908" (26 sheets), "General map of the great Kara-korum Glaciers" (two sheets), "Map of Dr. Sven Hedin's travels in Eastern Pamir" (two sheets); Vol. XII: "Hypsometrical maps in 52 sheets" one sheet includes title page and index map, plus 52 maps in folio sheets. Over the Brazier

First Edition. Illustrated card cover. G : in Good condition. Cover edges chipped and creased. Wear to lower spine. Foxing throughout. Previous owner's inscription dated 1916. 220mm x 170mm (9" x 7"). 32pp. Cover illustration by C Lovat Fraser. Graves subsequently disparaged his wartime poems and excluded them from the authorised collections of his work. When he delivers himself of lines like 'The whole field was so smelly; / We smelt the poor dog first: / His horrid swollen belly / Looked just like going burst', it is easy to see why. Nonetheless, as mentor and friend to Owen and Sassoon, he remains a pivotal figure in British war literature. 'Over the Brazier' (1916) was his first published work.

The slang of venery and its analogues

Chicago: privately printed. 1916. "The earliest dictionary of English sex terms. Only edition, 3 volumes, tall folio, printed from typescript on rectos only, ff. [1], ix, 222; [1], 216; [2], 208; vol. III is titled: Synonyms of the Slang of Venery; all volumes with occasional red pencil corrections in the text, likely authorial, as another set recently handled by us contained the same corrections; contemporary brown morocco over brown buckram, smooth spines lettered in gilt; some rubbing, especially at extremities, but generally a very good, sound set.& & Compiled, as it says on the title to vol. II, ""from the works of Ash, Bailey, Barrere, Bartlett, B.E., Bee, Cleland, Cotgrave, Dunton, D'Urfey, Dyche, Egan, Farmer, Florio, Grose, Halliwell, Harman, Johnson, Mayhew, Matsell, the Lexicon Baltronicum, and other sources."" Cary was apparently a newspaper editor from Wisconsin who also worked in New York and St. Louis. The work contains about 5400 entry words. In his introduction he writes that ""he was attempting to collect the 'slang of venery with the idea of classifying and preserving this most interesting language, which, while current during the ages, has never, so far as it is known to the compiler, risen to the dignity of a dictionary of its own'.""& & Coleman, History of Cant and Slang Dictionaries, pp. 69- 73. Not noticed by either Sidney Landau' in his 2001 edition of Dictionaries, or Eric Partridge in his History of Slang. "

        Atlas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Compiled and drawn by George Allison. Published in Davenport by the Iowa Publishing Co. Copyright 1916 by M. [Melchoir] Huebinger C.E. A rare color atlas of the city of Cedar Rapids from the early 20th century. Huge folio format, measuring 24 inches tall by 19 inches wide. Eleven double-page maps, each measuring more than 3 feet across when the atlas is open. Maps are printed on heavy paper and backed with linen. Complete, with no missing maps. (See below for further details on condition.) Evidently produced in a very small edition, possibly for in-house municipal use. No copies located in WorldCat. The same publisher issued a similar atlas of Davenport, Iowa, in 1916, and we located just one example of that publication. It is held by the Davenport Public Library. (WorldCat / OCLC number 21868014.) Title page of this atlas is followed by an extensive 2-page index in three parts: Maps, Plats, Additions and Sub-divisions to the city of Cedar Rapids; a list of city streets; and a list of public buildings, parks, etc. -- everything from schools, churches and cemeteries to hotels, theaters and fire departments. The first map is an overview map of Cedar Rapids and the Town of Kenwood Park. Red lines divide the map into sections, each of which is shown in larger form on the 10 details maps that comprise the rest of the atlas. A richly detailed view of Cedar Rapids circa 1916, with property boundaries, parcel numbers, owner names, geographical features, areas marked for new development, and much more. Scale is 300 feet to 1 inch. 45 numbered pages, with the blank linen backs of the maps counted in the pagination. Original hardcover binding is in poor condition. Both covers are detached, and the leather and cloth covering is well worn, torn, deteriorated, and missing in places. Good condition internally, apart from stains to the lower portions of the maps from the effects of moisture. This appears to have occurred some time ago, and there are no stuck pages, strong odors or other related issues. Stains are more pronounced on the white linen backing, which also shows some fraying at the edges. Please see our images for the appearance of the stains on the front of the maps, which could be minimized if they were removed and matted for framing. In all, a complete but cosmetically imperfect atlas of Cedar Rapids as it existed nearly a century ago. A rare, and possibly unique, piece of Iowa history. Additional images of this item on request. .
