Navy Estimates in The Great War, Winston Churchill's 15 February 1915 speech in the House of Commons

London: The Liberal Publication Department, printed by Strangeways & Sons, 1915. 1st Edition. Paperback. Fine. Here is an immaculate copy of the original, first printing pamphlet publication of Churchill's 15 February 1915 speech in the House of Commons - his final time introducing the annual Navy Budget as First Lord of the Admiralty. His first Navy Estimates speech of 1912 occurred on the eve of World War I and had laid out detailed policies for countering Germany in the growing naval arms race. This speech was well received and resulted in aggressive efforts under Churchill's Admiralty leadership to put Britain's Navy on a war footing. This 1915 Navy Estimates presentation occurs in the midst of war. Churchill reports: "On the declaration of war we were able to count upon a Fleet of sufficient superiority for all our needs, with a good margin for safety in vital matters, fully mobilised, placed in its war stations, supplied and equipped with every requirement." It would arguably be the war on land more than the war at sea that would prove Churchill's undoing. Later in the year, after being blamed for Gallipoli and the disastrous Dardanelles campaign, Churchill would resign from the Cabinet and rejoin the army to serve on the front in the trenches of France. The pamphlet offered here is 20 pages, bound in paper wraps, and measures 8 x 5.25 inches. Condition is truly fine - crisp, bright, clean, and entirely without wear. Original Churchill speech pamphlets of this era were frequently bound in annual compilations by the Liberal Publication Department. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (p.195), the number "8" hand stamped on the upper right corner of this pamphlet indicates that this pamphlet was disbound from the collected "Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1915-1918". This accounts for the wonderfully well-preserved condition. The speech pamphlet is protected in removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A45, Woods A24. Churchill's 15 Febuary 1915 speech was subsequently collected in The Conduct of the War by Sea (March 1915), Great Speeches of the War (later in 1915), War Speeches by British Ministers 1915-1916 (1917), and Winston S. Churchill: His Complete Speeches, Volume III, pp.2363-74.

        Some "Frightful" War Pictures

London, Duckworth & Co., , 1915. Folio. 24 plates with caption-texts facing, numerous exquisitely-detailed silhouettes throughout the text, pictorial endpapers. Very good in the original red cloth-backed two colour printed boards, just a little soiled at the margins, in slightly rubbed and soiled dust jacket lacking just a couple of small pieces with no loss of image or text. A very nice copy. First Edition. Drawings, "cartoons" is too disrespectful a term for work of such precision, selected from The Sketch and the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, the Popular Edition of the following year rapidly went into six impressions. Robinson's "... line drawings had an unaccustomed bite, yet were mild compared with the excoriations of artists like Raemakers, Dyson, and E. J. Sullivan. A nearer comparison could be made with the work of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, who strove for as much reality as he could get past the censor. Heath Robinson dealt in fantasy, yet the humour of both men, in the context of the times, was conspicuously good-natured." [ODNB]

A bold experimenter and iconoclast throughout, he explored a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and history plays, to his anticipations of expressionist and surrealist dramatic techniques. From his earliest work, Strindberg developed forms of dramatic action, language, and visual composition so innovative that many were to become technically possible to stage only with the advent of film. He is considered the father of modern Swedish literature and his The Red Room (1879) has frequently been described as the first modern Swedish novel. Complete in ten volumes.         KASIDAH of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi. A Lay of the Higher Law. With a Foreword by Roger Ingpen

Portland: Thomas Bird Mosher, 1915. This edition printed on Japanese Vellum is limited to only 20 numbered copies,of which this is number 12 signed by Mosher. With a facsimile of the original design and lettering of the front wrapper to the first edition. Royal quarto, full vellum lettered in gilt on upper and lower covers and spine. xxvii, 72, colophon leaf signed. A nice copy of this rare book, the vellum a bit mellowed. The kasidah (couplets) in this volume of poetry were written by Burton under his nom-de-plume, Haji Abdu Al-Yazdi. Compared by critics to "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," Burton's verse was judged as a "an exquisite gem of Oriental poetry." Burton wrote the Kasidah 27 years before he first ventured to print it. Mosher printed only 20 copies on the japon vellum used for this copy. Initials are in red. There is a fine introduction by William Marion Reedy and a number of tributes to Burton in verse including two by Watts-Dunton and Swinburne. Finally, there are a profusion of notes on Haji and the Kasidah itself. Copies are extremely elusive and we have seen none on the open market in recent memory.
