Art Deco Fashion Sketchbooks, Four in All, with an additional canvas

1915-1919 1915 - Containing a total of 80 original watercolors, 43 of which are pure fashion plates straight out of the wardrobe for "Downton Abbey". The fashions and aesthetic are very much of the teens and World War One era when what is known as Art Nouveau was evolving into the more angular, more abstract, more brittle, more self-consciously "Modern", of Art Deco. We can still see and enjoy the lavish and extravagant rococo flourishes of Art Nouveau while also finding traces of the streamlined looks associated with the twenties. The style of illustrations resembles that we find in "Gazette du Bon Ton", the highly sought-after French fashion magazine of the day, and we can see the possible influence of Aubrey Beardsley in the lines as well. Among the best illustrations there is a celebration of the exotic, the Oriental (a particularly Viennese version of Orientalism), the theatrical, and these aspects of the illustrations are redolent of such great illustrators as Dulac, Neilsen and their ilk. In the illustrations with theatrical allusions, conjured up are the glamourous poses by the opera divas of the day, when the likes of Geraldine Farrar or Maria Jeritza could be depended on for the flamboyant gestures that fed the enthusiasm of their huge base of fans. And then there is a small selection of other images, of ships, of an Australian dough boy, of an English cottage, that underscore the versatility of this Ernest. While the full identity of "Ernest" has yet to be established, the fineness and panache of the illustrations far exceeds that of a typical amateur, and it would seem probable that the sketches might have been done for or on behalf of a fashion house or retailer, either as drafts of ideas to be executed, renderings of what designers had already done, possibly to be copied, drafts of illustrations intended for catalogues or other promotional vehicles, or some combination. It would seem unlikely, in other words, that the drawings were merely done for the amusement of the artist. The illustrations are dated, with the earliest album also bearing the title, "Modes of 1915". The existence of this title offers indirect evidence of the artist's non-avocational purpose, in our view.

        Portrait of Abraham Lincoln

American Defense Society, Inc, New York 1915 - A very rare original printing plate: a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. A large quarter-length portrait of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), with his facsimile signature, and the imprint "Copyright" and "Distributed by the American Defense Society, Inc. / New York, N.Y." beneath the image (all in reverse). The President is shown gazing steadfastly at the viewer, his mind set firmly on the course he must follow. The imprint dates the plate to sometime after 1915, when the American Defense Society, Inc. was founded. The American Defense Society, Inc. was founded in 1915 in New York City, in response to the sinking of the Lusitania, as a national "aggressive, non-partisan society having for its sole aim the 'adequate national defense of the United States of America'" ( The American Defense Society: History, Purpose and Accomplishments , 1918). Theodore Roosevelt was Honorary President, and the society's board members included prominent local businessmen and professionals. The plate appears to be an almost same-size version of a chromolithogaphed portrait by Middleton, published in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1864. This chromolithograph was the only print portrait for which Lincoln provided direct advice to the artist: Lincoln suggested he consult a photograph (probably the Mathew Brady studio portrait of February 9, 1864). The original chromolithograph is oval but otherwise the two images are remarkably similar. Cf. Hozer, Boritt and Neely, The Lincoln Image , pp. 138 and 141. Original steel-faced copper printing plate, after Middleton, indistinctly signed in the image. Plate Size: 14 1/16 x 10 5/8 inches; image: 12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

"She was credited by some with second sight, and there were those that believed that her gifts were 'supernatural'. Her habits did little to discourage this conviction. She dressed like a witch in a flowing black cloak, buckled shoes and a wide-brimmed black hat looking, as she herself acknowledged, like an advertisement for Sandeman's Port." Original dark blue boards with light blue lettering and gilt pictorial design on upper cover, top edge gilt. Slight scuff to lower cover, but a remarkably fine copy as issued. He was instrumental in establishing the Carat as the unit of measure for gems. Ã’KunziteÓ is named after him. His library of several thousand books etc. on gems and minerals etc. went to the United States Geological Survey Library, purportedly for one dollar. In 2012 they discovered a unique album containing 81 photographs of the Russian Crown Jewels which predates the official catalog by the Soviet government by 3 years. Researchers have identified four pieces of jewelry that were documented in 1922 that were not included in the later catalog and that are assumed missing today. Copies were issued in a box that stated: Ã’Magic jewels and electric gems; meteorites or celestial stones; stones of healing; fabulous stones; concretions and fossils; snake stones and bezoars; charms of ancient and modern times; facts and fancies about precious stones.         The Birth of a Nation (Original handbill for early theatrical run at the Newark Theatre in Newark, New Jersey)

Newark: Newark Theatre, 1915. Original handbill for a theatrical run of D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" (1915) at the Newark Theatre in Newark, New Jersey. Noted on the bill are cast members Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Donald Crisp, and Raoul Walsh (here spelled "Raul Walsh"), who played John Wilkes Booth. Also noted on the bill is that the film is to be accompanied by a full symphony orchestra under the direction of Albert Pesce, who arranged music for four D.W. Griffith films between 1919 and 1922.An early epic from Griffith, who was inspired by the sprawling Italian productions "Quo Vadis" (1913) and "Cabiria" (1914), films that not only legitimated the feature film runtime but made extensive use of the traveling camera, something Griffith revolutionized in the United States with this film. At the time of production, American companies were skeptical of an audience's ability to endure complicated narratives and inflated runtimes, so Griffith formed his own production company to take it on, leaving Biograph in 1913, where he made numerous successful shorts. Upon release, it was an immediate hit with audiences, and screened at movie palaces like Newark Theatre for years, ultimately becoming the highest grossing film of the silent era.5.5 x 8 inches. Faint dampstain and small chip to the upper edge, overall very well preserved, Very Good plus.

Glacier National Park Lantern Slides and Lecture Notes

Great Northern Railway / Haynes Studio. No Binding. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Circa 1915 hand-colored glass lantern slides and accompanying lecture booklet. 149/150 unbroken slides present, missing slide #1. Slides in original wooden box with clasp, lined in black cloth with instructions to the operator affixed. Box a bit stained in places, edges worn. Images include landscapes, and long since shrunken glaciers, flora and fauna, tourist amenities, members of the Blackfeet tribe. The inclusion of the Many Glacier Hotel narrows the date of the set to 1914 at the earliest, when construction began.Photographers include Roland Reed, T.J. Hileman, Fred Kiser, R. E. Marble, and others. Reed was well-known for his portraits of the Blackfeet tribe, some of which appear in this set of slides. Hileman moved to Kalispell, MT in 1911 and in 1924 was appointed official photographer for the Great Northern Railway. Kiser was hired by Louis Hill to begin work for the Great Northern Railway in northwestern Montana in the late '00s. Hill was a promoter of the national parks and later built several lodges in Glacier. An exhibit of Kiser's photos were used in drumming up support for the park in DC. "Ted" Marble operated a photo studio in Belton, MT, now known as West Glacier. These images and the lecture are representative of a time in which railways heavily promoted travel to national parks. As WWI broke out in Europe, advertising for domestic travel increased with the "See America" campaign. Slides were produced by Haynes Studios in St. Paul, Minnesota. F. Jay Haynes was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railway as well as Yellowstone National Park. He operated studios out of a train car and a structure in the Mammoth Springs area of Yellowstone. In 1899 he moved his studio to St. Paul. After his retirement in 1916, his son Jake took up the family business. Each slide is numbered with a caption and states the individual photographer's name. All are clear (although they appear somewhat blurred in scanned image) and brightly-colored. Booklet has some light soil and wear to spine, pencil markings/notes to text in several places. Descriptions of each slide appear next to a small black and white image of each slide. Index at rear lists the photographers.

Two volumes, quarto, pp. xxx, 349; xiii, 338 with two photogravure frontispieces, 18 color plates, more than 200 illustrations from photographs (most by Frank Hurley) and line drawings in the text, three folding maps in rear pocket. Original dark blue cloth with lettering and decoration stamped silver. Rosove 217.A2, variant b, with top edges blue, but this set without an errata slip. A bright and attractive set with some mild rubbing to the boards; internally very clean and sound. Mawson turned down an opportunity to serve as geologist for Robert Scott's Terra Nova Expedition, deciding instead to lead his own scientific expedition to the part of the Antarctic continent immediately south of Australia. After making considerable progress mapping and charting the region, Mawson was on an excursion with two companions when one fell down a crevasse with their best dogs and most of their supplies. The two survivors were forced to eat the remaining dogs, and they began to suffer from symptoms brought from the excessively high levels of Vitamin A found in husky liver. Eventually his remaining companion died, leaving Mawson to struggle back to their base alone, arriving just a few hours after their ship had left. He and six men who had stayed behind to wait for him were forced to spend another winter awaiting rescue. An epic survival narrative and classic of antarctic exploration.

XVIII,476/ 478/ 490 S. Orig.-Leinen. Aus der Reihe: "Carl August. Darstellungen und Briefe zur Geschichte des Weimarischen Fürstenhauses und Landes, im Auftrage Seiner Königlichen Hoheit des Großherzogs Wilhelm Ernst von Sachsen zur Hundertjahrfeier des Großherzogtums herausgegeben von Erich Marcks. IV.Abteilung: Briefwechsel des Herzogs-Herzogs Carl August mit Goethe. - Ganzlederausgabe, Lederausgabe, Erstausgabe, EA, erste Auflage in sehr guter Erhaltung. - "Warum handgebunden?

Was nicht heissen will, solchen hätte das Gespinst je missfallen.

. . Tome premier[-second].Amsterdam, Leipzig, Johann Caspar Arkstée, Henricus Merkus, 1759. 2 volumes bound as 1. Folio. With 2 title-pages printed in red and black, each with a different engraved vignette, 1 portrait after Pieter Paul Rubens and and 124 portraits after Anthony van Dyck (several folding and 13 etched by Van Dyck himself), woodcut tailpieces. Green half morocco (ca. 1860?), richly gold-tooled spine, gilt and gauffered edges.

Mauquoy-Hendrickx I, pp. 46-49; V. Someren 62; STCN (2 copies); Szwykowski, p. 17, XV; cf. Hind, Van Dyck. His original etchings and his Iconography (Boston, 1915). Last and best edition of Antony van Dyck's famous Iconographie, containing 125 portraits of distinquished contemporaries, including Pieter Paul Rubens, Pieter Breugel, Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt, Erasmus, Maria de Medicis and Philip IV of Spain. The portraits were executed by the most eminent Antwerp engravers and etchers of their day, including Pieter de Jode, Cornelis Galle, Wenceslaus Hollar and Lucas Vorsterman. Thirteen of the portraits were etched by Van Dyck himself and "are among the most masterly plates produced in the whole history of portrait etching. In fact, in spite of the limitations of his practise of the art, Van Dyck has no rival as an etcher of portraits except Rembrandt" (Hind, p. 5). Slightly browned throughout and with an occasional minor tear in a folding plate, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding somewhat worn, with the corners slightly damaged, but still good and structurally sound.

        X Rays and Crystal Structure [ X-rays Xrays ]

London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd, 1915. First Edition. Cloth. Very good. First Edition. vii, [1], 228 pages., [2 index, blank], [2 advertisements]. Original blue cloth with faded spine labeling, boards bowed and corner tips bumped. Binding overall is worn at the extremities. 'Presentation Copy' embossed at head of the title page (no inscription just the stamp). Now preserved in a custom cloth clamshell box with leather spine labels. Cloth. The Braggs (father and son) were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915 'for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays'. Their experiments showed that X-rays could help identify the atomic structure of materials. 'the work of Bragg and his son Lawrence in 1913-1914 founded a new branch of science of the greatest importance and significance, the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays. If the fundamental discovery of the wave aspect of X-rays, as evidenced by their diffraction in crystals, was due to von Laue and his collaborators, it is equally true that the use of X-rays as an instrument for the systematic revelation of the way in which crystals are built was entirely due to the Braggs. This was recognized by the award of the Nobel Prize jointly to father and son in 1915.' (from the Nobel Prize Biography of WH Bragg). This work is also recognized in an extensive write-up (with Max Von Laue) on X-Ray Crystallography in Printing and the Mind of Men (406b).Provenance: From the library of Martin J. Buerger (an MIT Professor who did much work in crystallography and has written many books and papers on the subject.) with his ink stamp on front flyleaf.

The Tommy Alphabet Valentine Toy Books. Dolly Series.

Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee, London and Montreal 1915 - Scarce shaped-book with three-dimensional plaster head of General Haig on the cover. 24 by 8.5 cm (at its widest). Unpaginated, twelve leaves, plus card binding. No copies found on either OCLC FirstServe or COPAC, nor in the British Library catalogues! The text is an ABC, with several lines of rhymed couplets for an item designated by the letter. All the items relate in some way to the war-effort, and everything is intended to strike a patriotic chord. There are two letters per page. On the verso are the poems, and the facing rectos illustrate the particular object, two per page. These illustrations are black, white and red. Above all else, it is Haig's plaster head, sitting atop a chromolithograph of the rest of his body in uniform, that distinguishes this toy book, though. The rear cover shows the back of Haig in uniform. The plaster has some minor abrasions and loss, as typical of plaster. Scattered light foxing within. The last three leaves are limp by the head, with some minor loss of the paper, and the rear cover appears to have been repaired and reinforced inside by the head.
