Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Gf. Zeppelin").

Friedrichshafen, 13.

[Two photographs] as Columbine in Le Carnival

Lopokova, Lydia Vasilievna. [Two photographs] as Columbine in Le Carnival. Wearing white lace dress with cherry designs, hair in curls. Matthew Arbuthnot (London, ca. 1915), each photo stamped, 43 & 44 New Bond Street stamps. 1. Half length, looking right, right hand raised, thumb and third fingers extended. Size 5 1/2 x 8". 2. Silverprint. Full length portrait, looking right, hands extended, right foot extended. Size 5 1/2 x 7 7/8". Lopokova, Lydia Vasilievna [Lidiya Vasilyevna Lopukhova; married name Lydia Vasilievna Keynes, Lady Keynes] (1892-1981), ballet dancer. A wonderful and warm biography of Lopokova by Margot Fonteyn, end with the following tribute: "Lopokova was a diminutive figure with the natural air of an eager, enquiring child which caused her to hold her head tilted up towards anyone with whom she was conversing. This could give the impression that her nose, too, was up-tilted whereas, unusually, just the tip turned down, as a Picasso drawing of 1919 clearly shows. Her face was round with alert eyes under perfectly curved eyebrows; her mouth was a well-defined feature. Both her face and hands were remarkably expressive. On or off the stage her vitality, originality, humour, and youthful enthusiasm were irresistible. Gaiety and good humour prevailed. In addition she was devoid of jealousy, malice, vanity, meanness, or pretension. After her husband's death she adopted a retired way of life but lost none of her originality and charm. She died at Threeways Nursing Home, Seaford, near Tilton on 8 June 1981." Reference: Fonteyn articicle on Lydia Lopokova. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The Masses / November, 1915

The Masses Publishing Company, New York 1915 - New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1915. The November, 1915 issue (Volume VII, Number 1, whole number 53), identified internally as October-November. Large Folio, illustrated stapled wraps, 26 pp. Just Good, due to a large chip at lower left front cover, but otherwise would be Very Good, throughout, by any periodical standard. As the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, it no doubt deserves its own grading standard, but there is none such. Some other cover peripheral chips and nicks as well, and some pages inside have corner creases. Normal occasional darkening; only very modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918 on the basis of postal regulations, after two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of November, 1915 included Eastman, Nina Bull; Floyd Dell; Vachel Lindsay; Marguerite Wilkinson; Louis Untermeyer; Alice Duer Miller; Howard Brubaker; Amos Pinchot; B. Boyeson; Jean Starr Untermeyer; Mary White Ovington; Jeanette Eaton; and Inez Haynes Gilmore. Art was contributed by Stuart Davis; M.A. Kempf; Arthur Young; Maurice Becker; Glenn O. Coleman; John Barber; Elizabeth Grieg; Robert Minor; and K.R. Chamberlain, with Davis executing the front cover, and Chamberlain the rear cover. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history. l-lng2 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Masses / September, 1915. With "To Billy Sunday" by Carl Sandburg. Seven Helen Hoyt poems. Cornelia Barns cover

New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1915. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1915 New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1915. The September, 1915 issue (Volume VI, Number 12, whole number 52). Large Folio, illustrated stapled wraps, 22 pp. Very Good by any periodical standard; as the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, this example is certainly better than very good, by its own standard. Several small spots of soil, small-scale edge wear; spine slit at bottom one-third; modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. Text contributors to this issue of September, 1915 included Eastman, Carl Sandburg (with his poem "To Billy Sunday", which here is almost certainly the only publication of that scathing rebuke of mercenary evangelism - until many years later after Sandburg's death - which did use the name of Billy Sunday in its title; other appearances until then used the title “To a Contemporary Bunkshooter”); Howard Brubaker; Elsie Clews Parsons; Elizabeth Waddell; Anna Strunsky Walling; Clement Wood; Floyd Dell; F.A. Griffin; Helen Hoyt (seven poems); Edmond McKenna; Charles Erskine Scott Wood; and "W.E.W." The now-timeless art was contributed by Cornelia Barns; Stuart Davis; Art Young; K.R. Chamberlain; Maurice Becker; Glenn O. Coleman; and Robert Minor, with Barns executing the front cover, and Davis the rear cover. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history. l-lng2

THE CRY FOR JUSTICE: An Anthology of the Literature of Social Protest. The Writings of Philosophers, Poets, Novelists, Social Reformers, and Others Who Have Voiced the Struggle Against Social Injustice. Selected from Twenty-Five Languages Covering a Period of Five Thousand Years

Philadelphia: J. C. Winston Co., (1915). Philadelphia: J. C. Winston Co., (1915). First edition, first printing. Light wear to cover cloth, front inner hinge starting, 2 previous owner bookplates, 1 of which mounted to back of inscribed leaf has caused discoloration and a small tear, else near fine. Original red cloth, octavo, 891 pp. 32 b/w illustrations. Text includes a three-page introduction by Jack London. INSCRIBED BY UPTON SINCLAIR TO JACK LONDON: "To Jack London, with gratitude from Upton Sinclair." And with the bookplate of Ida H. Winship mounted to front fixed endpaper. Ida Winship was the wife of Napa millionaire Ed Winship. Jack "had met the Winships in 1904 aboard "The Siberia" on his way to Japan, and they became lifelong friends." (Stanford, 1988: "Letters of Jack London" vol. 1, p.474, see also for examples of correspondence with the Winships. In Russ Kingman's "Jack London: A Definitive Chronology" can be found numerous instances of intimate social visits between the Londons and Winships). In researching this book we found an auction record for another copy (Sothebys in 2004) with an identical inscription and a calling card from Charmian London, presenting that copy (recipient not known), inscribed by her: "With my compliments. (I found two!)." Apparently Upton Sinclair sent 2 inscribed copies of this book to Jack, this one, it seems, was given by Charmian to their friend Ida. BAL 11961

        Wedding Night Jitters

, 1915. 1915 Two-tone gouache and pastel on board, 16 x 21.5 inches. 1915. Signed "W. E. Hill '15" in the bottom left corner. Image depicts a man and woman on their wedding night: the woman, in a bobbed hairstyle and a lacy wedding dress, sits in a chair at the left of the image facing the window in front of her; the man, wearing a tuxedo, sits just to the right of the center of the image with his feet resting on the foot of the bedframe; together, the couple forms a near right angle with the negative space between them as the focal point. Both figures, facing away from each other, are glancing back, seemingly as if to look at each other, but fall short of making eye contact. Examined out of frame, front board with some light wear to the edges not affecting the image, a few minor smudges, else fine. Verso with penciled auction notations, former owner's inscription of artist's name and illustration date, light offsetting from the frame, minor peeling to the board, some smudging. In original black wooden frame, with new archival matting and new museum glass. Wedding Night Jitters is an original drawing by W. E. Hill, a popular American artist and illustrator of first half of the 20th century. Known for his ability to depict everyday people in natural settings, Hill presents in this drawing a life-like Jazz Age couple on their wedding night, whose decadence is diminished by the apathy apparent on their faces. Around the same time, Hill drew his most famous illustration, "My Wife and My Mother-in-Law," published in Puck on November 6, 1915. In this iconic image, Hill experiments with photographic ambiguity by depicting both a young lady and elderly woman's profile in a singular illustration. Hill's early success earned him a long-term position at the Sunday New York Tribune in 1917, where he would maintain his own weekly series of cartoons. By 1920, Hill's popularity led him to be chosen by editor Max Perkins to illustrate the dust jacket for F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise. Like Wedding Night Jitters, this dust jacket art depicts an elegantly dressed couple with the unmistakable look of apathy on their faces that distinguished the Lost Generation. The illustration compliments Fitzgerald's writing, which similarly captures the zeitgeist of the Jazz Age lifestyle. In a letter to Max Perkins in January 1920, Fitzgerald expressed gratitude that Perkins chose Hill as his dust jacket designer, claiming, "I admire him more than any other artist in the country." Hill went on to create illustrations for Fitzgerald's next two books, Flappers and Philosophers (1920), and The Beautiful and Damned (1922). Interestingly, the progression of Hill's dust jacket art shows his imagined couple increasingly drawn to resemble the Fitzgeralds, with the woman's features softened to look like Zelda and the man's forehead broadened and hairstyle altered to mimic F. Scott. The increasing likeness of Hill's figures to the author ultimately worked against him; Hill presumably should have designed the dust jacket for The Beautiful and Damned's companion text, Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), but he was replaced by artist John Held, Jr. "Fitzgerald had disliked the dust jacket illustration on The Beautiful and Damned, a two-color drawing by the artist W. E. Hill, showing a man and woman who looked very much like Fitzgerald and Zelda." "The girl is excellent of course," Fitzgerald had written to Perkins in January 1922, but the man, he thought, was "a debauched version of me." W. E. (William Ely) Hill (1887-1962) was an artist, illustrator, and cartoonist known for his ability to realistically depict everyday people. Hill began his artistic career creating illustrations for the serial publications Life and Puck, as well as other literary magazines. In 1917, Hill began working for the Sunday New York Tribune, where he remained until 1922. There he maintained a series of full-page illustrations known collectively as "Among Us Mortals." Today, Hill is bes. Gouache and Pastel on Board. Near Fine.

        OF HUMAN BONDAGE

, 1915 1915. A Novel. London: William Heinemann, (1915). Original blue-green cloth. First English Edition, published one day after Doran's edition in New York. This was Maugham's famed autobiographical novel about~Philip Carey, who has a club foot and who attends King's School, Tercanbury [Maugham had a stammer and attended King's School, Canterbury]; who rejects the idea of the ministry and who studies in Heidelberg and later becomes a doctor [like Maugham]; who becomes obsessed with a vulgar waitress, Mildred Rogers, who goes to a bad end [see Liza of Lambeth], etc. But the novel succeeds because of its unflinching honesty and its devastating account of loneliness, the most tragic of all human conditions. [CGEL]~This copy is in very good-plus condition (there is little wear, but the "gilt" lettering on the binding is rather dull -- because this is a wartime book with faux gilt). We have never had a copy of this book in dust jacket, and such copies may in fact be quite rare: the original one showed Philip with the "wrong" foot a club-foot, but this was discovered after only a few hundred copies had gone out -- and it is not known how many of the copies were equipped with a revised jacket or with no jacket at all (Toole Stott observes, "I have been unable to obtain a copy of either jacket or to find anyone who recalls a description of them").In any event, this UK edition is many times scarcer than the US edition. American Art Deco Illuminated Manuscript in remembrance of Joseph Nash Field

Rounds-Truman Company, Chicago 1915 - 6 leaves, fine calligraphic manuscript in black ink with decorative borders and illuminations in gray and silver (24 x 19 cm), loose in padded black leather folder and matching black leather slipcase. Leather rubbed, ribbon detached; very good. Signed at the rear by eight members of the Board of Directors of Marshall Field and Company, Chicago A fine American Art Deco manuscript of austere elegance, the calligraphy is technically perfect and aesthetically pleasing. The text is a resolution adopted by the Board of Directors of Marshall Field and Company in commemoration of the passing of Joseph Nash Field, brother of Marshall Field. ILLUMINATED BY ROUNDS-TRUMAN Company, Chicago. In 1912 Rounds-Truman Company was paid by the Board of Trustees for the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign campus) for "engrossing diplomas" (cf. Twenty-Sixth Report, 1912, pp. 413, 871, 874, 892). Rounds-Truman also entered copyright for "Rounds' Masonic Certificate" in 1907 (cf. Catalog of Copyright Entries. Part 4, vol. 2: Works of Art, Etc. New Series, Library of Congress Copyright Office, p. 795). According to an advertisement in Patterson's American Educational Directory, Vol. 19, p. 901, Rounds-Truman was located in Chicago at 64 W. Randolph St. and specialized in "Diplomas: Artistic new designs in stock which can easily be adapted to any school. The designing of individual diplomas for schools and colleges and of membership certificates for fraternities is a specialty. Engrossing graduates' names to match diplomas." The firm was still in business by January 13, 1932, at which time it was contracted by the University of Illinois to fulfill "diploma requirements for a period of three years" (cf. UIL Board of Trustee Minutes, 1932, p. 504). It is possible that the name of the illuminator of our manuscript can be assigned to one Roger Barnett. A note about this illuminator appeared in "The Educator" vol. 43, No. 5 (January 1938) p. 17: "Through P. Seidensticker, manager of the Rounds-Truman Company, 123 W. Madison Street, Chicago, we learned that Roger Barnett has been employed to do engrossing in their engrossing studio. This studio specializes in all kinds of pen work such as resolutions, diplomas, etc. Mr. Barnett is a nephew of C.A. Barnett, an engrosser of Cleveland. Several years ago Mr. Barnett specialized in engrossing and pen work at the Zanerian." Illuminated American manuscripts created by known workshops are very uncommon. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Thomas, Dylan; Sitwell, Edith). The Shadow of Cain. [Original poster for the first performance] large poster on paper (20" x 30" -- 50.5 x 76 cm.). Folds, else fine. The Shadow of Cain is the third of Sitwell's Three Poems of the Atomic Bomb. It was a live drama for voices, with music by Edith Sitwell and Humphrey Searle (1915-1982), first performed November 16th, 1952 at the Palace Theatre, London, with the London Symphony Orchestra. It was set for voices and chorus by Humphry Searle. The Shadow of Cain was the main attraction of the concert which Andrew Porter reviewed, writing in the Musical Times (January 1953). "Dr. Sitwell herself and Dylan Thomas read the poem in magnificent measured tones, relayed by loudspeaker... Spoken words and music have always been uneasy mates, but... there are few essays in the medium so successful as Mr. Searle's. The B.B.C. should certainly take it up."
