The Vanishing Race: The Last Great Indian Council

Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company. Good with no dust jacket. 1914. Second Edition. Hardcover. Both hinges repaired with Japan tissue, dampstain in front pages to top and fore-edge lightly into text margins, fraying to spine head and tail, tone, owner's signature, later owner's emboss, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover. ; Richard A Hand; A Bookman's Guide to the Indians of the Americas; D 197. Includes 80 photogravure plates by Joseph K Dixon; his sepia-toned photographs were highly imitative of Edward S Curtis. The "Wanamaker Indian expeditions of 1908, 1909, and 1913 ... were organized and funded by Rodman Wanamaker, heir to the Philadelphia-based Wanamaker department store fortune, and a political advocate for the rights of Native Americans to citizenship in the United States. Wanamaker was particularly concerned that the life and culture of the "vanishing race" would be lost to modernity and relegated to reservation life.To further his cause and to publicize the plight of the American Indian, Wanamaker funded these expeditions to document Indian life and culture through photography, film, and sound recordings. On each of these expeditions, Rodman Wanamaker employed former Baptist preacher and lecturer Joseph Kossuth Dixon as his official photographer and expedition leader. Dixon had previously been employed by RodmanÂ’s father, John Wanamaker, as a lecturer for, and the director of, the Wanamaker department store's education bureau. In his new position with the expeditions, Joseph K. Dixon took over 8,000 negatives of Native Americans ... Unlike Adam Clark Vroman's work, Dixon's photographs over the course of these three trips have been criticized for their sentimentality. Through staged shots and photographic manipulation, Dixon emphasized the romanticism of the "noble savage"—a message that clearly complemented Wanamaker's desire to stir sympathy for Native Americans in the hearts of white citizens. ... Each of the Wanamaker expeditions was organized around a particular conceit that Rodman Wanamaker had chosen as a means to "accurately" depict and preserve Indian life. During the first expedition in 1908, Joseph K. Dixon traveled to the Crow reservation in Montana to film a version of Henry Longfellow's poem, "Song of Hiawatha," using the Native Americans at the agency as actors. He also photographed the Crows at their camp at Little Big Horn. The following year, Rodman Wanamaker charged Dixon with organizing an "old-time Indian council" at the Crow Agency, a traditional gathering of fifty chiefs from several United States reservations to discuss tribal politics; the last gathering of its kind had reportedly occurred in 1867. As with the 1908 expedition, this "Last Great Indian Council," as Dixon and Wanamaker called it, was recorded on motion-picture film and in photographs. During the last expedition in 1913, Dixon organized and photographed a series of flag-raising ceremonies on dozens of Indian reservations across the West, purportedly to show Indian allegiance to the United States and to publicize Rodman Wanamaker's efforts at lobbying for the citizenship of Native Americans." - Massachusetts Historical Society. Dixon stage-managed the Wanamaker Expeditions' events, including gathering the war stories of surviving participants of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Custer's Last Stand. By romanticising the vanishing of Native American Indian culture, Wanamaker and Dixon helped rally support of Reform Era popular efforts for assimilation while at the same time reinforcing the mythology of the noble but vanquished American Indians. A solid Second Revised Edition hardcover of this important work illuminating American social history and popular culture. ; Photographs; xviii, 231 pages .

Includes the original Arabic and an introduction in German by Heinrich Wiesel. “Taqi ad-Din Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah Â… known as Ibn Taymiyyah (1263 – 1328) was a Islamic scholar, theologian and logician. He lived during the troubled times of the Mongol invasions, much of the time in Damascus. He was a member of the school founded by Ahmad ibn Hanbal and is considered by his followers, along with Ibn Qudamah, as one of the two most significant proponents of Hanbalism. In the modern era, his adherents often refer to the two as ‘the two sheikhsÂ’ and Ibn Taymiyyah in particular as ‘Sheikh ul-Islam. Â’ (He) sought the return of Sunni Islam to what he viewed as earlier interpretations of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and is considered to have had considerable influence in contemporary Wahhabism, Salafism, and Jihadism. He is renowned for his fatwa issued against the Mongol rulers declaring jihad by Muslims against them compulsory, on the grounds that they did not follow Sharia and as such were not MuslimÂ… His teachings had a profound influence on Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and other later Wahabi scholars. ” (Wikipedia, 2016) This copy belongd to Rabbi David Zvi Hoffman. “Hoffman (1843 – 1921) was an Orthodox Rabbi and Torah Scholar. Shortly after obtaining his degree, he became employed as a teacher in Samson Raphael Hirsch's Realschule school in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1873 moved to Berlin to join the faculty of the Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin where he eventually became rector in 1899 after the death of Azriel HildesheimerÂ… Hoffman was the leading authority on traditional halakha (Jewish law) in Germany in his lifetimeÂ… He was also known for his efforts to disprove the Documentary Hypothesis, as expressed by the Graf-Wellhausen theory, with his arguments presented in the work Die wichtigsten Instanzen gegen die Graf-Wellhausensche Hypothese…” (Wikipedia, 2016) SUBJECT(S) : Islam -- Prayers and devotions.         Busting 'Em and Other Big League Stories

Edward J. Clode, New York 1914 - First edition. Hardcover in tan cloth lettered in dark brown. 282 pp. Illustrated with humorous drawings. A tight, generally fine example, just a touch of wear at the spine extremities and a tiny tear to the cloth at the head of the spine. Internally clean and bright. Lacking the extremely rare dust jacket. One of the rarest and most sought after baseball books, an autobiographical account of one of the games immortals, Ty Cobb. Much in the same vein as Christy Mathewson's "Pitching In A Pinch" published two years earlier, Cobb recounts tales from his own career as well as stories from around the major leagues of the first decade of the 20th century. A rare book in any condiiton, this is the finmest copy we have encountered outside of a couple in private collections. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Das schmerzliche Meer. Frühe und neue Gedichte.

Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Einbandkanten stark berieben, Bll. teils stockfleckig. - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 3. - Jentsch 40.

        Nähendes Mädchen 1914

      - Technik: Bleistift auf Karton. Beschriftung: unten links signiert und datiert: "F. Simm 12 VII 14". [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Nashville, TN, (ca. early 1920s to late 1930s). Very good. Collection of 100+ items/3” linear approx. belonging to student of Peabody College for Teachers, comprised primarily of personal papers relating to the studentÂ’s course materials, schedules, receipts, graduation forms and invitations, a photograph of classmates, social club rosters, directories, correspondence, and promotional material issued by the college including brochures, newsletters, bulletins, solicitations, alumni association and other assorted materials. Some toning, wear. Generally very good. Archive a student who received his BS, MA and PhD at Peabody, as well as that of his wife, who also graduated from Peabody with a BS. The couple were both heavily involved in the school, members of numerous social organizations, and active in student government (he was president of the senior class of '26). The promotional material in the collection shows that the college, which had reorganized and opened a new campus directly across from Vanderbilt University in 1914, was in the midst of major construction and expansion projects during this time; many pieces show photographs and renderings of new or planned buildings. The college, at that time the largest teachers' college in the South, was incorporated into Vanderbilt in 1979. A varied education archive, particularly rich with detail of curricula and student life.

North of Boston, the first edition, first issue, final binding state, signed by Frost in 1924, the year he won his first Pulitzer Prize for Poetry with Frost's notation of the location of the cottage in England where he was living when North of Boston was published and the year of publication, 1914

London: David Nutt, 1914. First edition. Hardcover. This first edition, first issue, final binding state of the authorÂ’s second published book is signed by Frost in black ink in four lines on the front free endpaper: "Robert Frost | Amherst 1924 | (Little Iddens, Leddington, | near Ledbury, England, 1914)”. Frost and his family moved to Little Iddens in early April, 1914, occupying a two-storey cottage with a vegetable garden and orchards of apple, plum, and pear trees. Mid-May 1914 saw FrostÂ’s second published book, North of Boston, which bolstered his newly minted literary reputation and precipitated his return to the United States. In 1924, when this copy was signed, Frost was ensconced at Amherst College and won his first Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. North of Boston opens with the famous poems “The Pasture” and “Mending Wall” and was swiftly hailed by important reviews. Complicating the publication history, the 1,000 sets of first edition sheets saw six different binding variants over a period of eight years, due both to transfer of sheets for an American edition and to bankruptcy of the original publisher (Nutt) and resulting sale of remaining first edition sheets. (See Crane, A3, pp.14-15) In 1922, Dunster House Bookshop of Cambridge, Massachusetts, acquired the remaining 259 sets of first edition sheets. Of these, 59 were already bound in blue cloth, subsequently rebound in green cloth taller and narrower than the original 1914 binding. The final 200 sets of first edition sheets were bound in 1923 in coarse green linen cloth “almost identical in dimension with the original Nutt copies which were being imitated. Similarities of cloth and gilt-stamping in binding A and bindings E and F indicate that the work was done by the same binder in England before the later copies were sent to America.” (Crane, A3, p.15) These final 200 first edition, first issue copies (“Binding F” per Crane) were bound with untrimmed fore and bottom edges. This signed Binding F copy is in very good plus condition. The green cloth binding is tight and square with sharp corners and only trivial wear to extremities. We note modest toning to the perimeter of the boards and the spine, the spine gilt remaining clearly legible. The book is clearly unread; signatures through that of pages 125-8 remain uncut. We find no spotting or previous ownership marks. The contents show modest age-toning and a 1.5 inch closed tear to the lower blank margin of page 16 (part of the uncut p.13-16 signature). There is transfer browning to the pastedowns and facing endpapers from the pastedown glue. Iconic American poet Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) was the quintessential poetic voice of New England. Ironically, Frost was born in San Francisco and it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children – “the place to be poor and to write poems” – that catalyzed his recognition. A BoyÂ’s Will was completed in England, published by David Nutt in 1913. A convocation of critical recognition, introduction to other writers, and creative energy supported the 1914 English publication of FrostÂ’s second book, North of Boston, after which “FrostÂ’s reputation as a leading poet had been firmly established in England, and Henry Holt of New York had agreed to publish his books in America.” Accolades met his return to America and by 1917 a move to Amherst “launched him on the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever “subjects” he pleased at a congenial collegeÂ… and “barding around,” his term for “saying” poems in a conversational performance.” (ANB) By 1924 he had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent his final decade and a half as “the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century” with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961). Bibliographic reference: Crane A3.

Vibert.

Paris: Georges Crès et Cie, les Maitres du Livre, 30 March 1914 - Octavo. Finely bound by Cochard in near-contemporary green crushed morocco, spine in compartments with raised bands and title gilt direct, gilt-tooled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. With the original wrappers bound in. Spine sunned, bound-in wrappers a little marked, excellent condition. Frontispiece illustration in two states, one on thick plate, the other on chartreuse paper. First edition, first printing, copy 112 of 112 copies on papier vergé chartreuse, from an edition of 1,075 copies in total. This copy, with the original chartreuse wrappers bound in, has been handsomely bound by Cochard. Gourmont's "Letters to the Amazon" are the result of the symbolist poet, who had been stricken and disfigured by lupus vulgaris, meeting in 1910, and for four years corresponding intensely and devotedly with, the "Amazon" of Paris, Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972), one of the most influential lesbian and feminist writers of the period. Her life inspired Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, and her Paris salon at 20 rue Jacob was for 60 years the crucible of Left Bank culture (guests included Colette, Pierre Louÿs, Mata Hari, Auguste Rodin, Ezra Pound, Jean Cocteau, T. S. Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Rainer Maria Rilke, Rabindranath Tagore, Nancy Cunard, Peggy Guggenheim, Caresse and Harry Crosby, Sylvia Beach, and Isadora Duncan, to name but few). Barney promoted women's writing and formed an Académie des femmes in response to the all-male Académie française, while also supporting and inspiring male writers such as Gourmont. These letters are a classic of French literature, and were much reprinted - this however is the scarce first edition in the alluring chartreuse issue. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Snapshot Album.

Alexandria, 1914. - 40 photographs. Slightly larger or smaller than 100 x 70 mm. One photo (230 x 150 mm) laid in. Brief captions inked beneath almost all of the photos. Album made of thin flexible card. 4to. The compiler appears to have resided at 1 Rue Rosette. Some of the photos were apparently taken from his balcony which according to one of the photos must have been slightly up the other side of a street from the Mohamed-Aly Club. Some of the photos show the interior of the compilers residence (entrance hall, salon, porcelain cabinets). The large photo probably shows the compiler and his bride emerging from their wedding and passing under upraised sticks held by young soldiers or older Boy Scouts. - Some fading. Cover chipped around edges and creased.

Grant Richards Ltd, London, 1914 First edition, first impression.Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt.Light scorch-marks too endpapers from a former "protector", spine very gently rolled and showing some very typical fading but all in all a very decent, very honest copy indeed. With the armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of John Wynford, whilst still Baron St Davids. Wynford, soldier and parliamentarian, was elevated to Viscount in 1918. Since his later bookplates record this preferment, we can be confident that Wynford was the primary owner. From a total printing of 1250 some 506 were sent to Huebsch for publication in the US, making this one of just 746 of the earliest issue of what Graham Greene once described as the greatest book of short stories in the language. Unsophisticated copies in presentable condition are uncommon, examples with secure early provenance even more so.[29]
