Across the Plains in '54. A Story for Young People of Early Emmigration to California. [With:] The Captive Maidens or the Prizes Won. A Sequel to Across the Plains in 54 [sic] And by the Author of "Across the Plains in 54." A Story of the early settlement

[San Francisco]: Chase & Rae, Printers, [c. 1914]. Two parts in one. 8vo, original printed tan wrappers, in new folding box with Plexiglas lid. [iv], 232 pp. Wrappers smudged, particularly at upper front wrapper; pervasive interior light dampstaining, with some spotting at terminal leaves; but a sound, solid copy of a most uncommon work. "Second Edition, Revised, Corrected and Enlarged by the Author" (as stated on the verso of the first title-page), and the first edition to include The Captive Maidens. The narrative tells of the author's emigration from Missouri to California in 1854, his return home in 1860, and his second overland crossing in 1865, as well as his adventures in California afterward. There seems to be little doubt of the general authenticity of Nott's travels, but he unfortunately recasts them into a fictionalized tale for young readers. Still, his plainspoken sincerity remains effective. Most of the California activity, mining, ranching, Indian-fighting, etc., takes place around Marysville. According to OCLC, the only copy of the first edition, undated and comprising just 76 pages, is at the Bancroft Library; about 15 copies of the second edition are listed. Wright Howes assumes that the first edition was not issued in book form, and he speculates that this second edition was published in 1905 and was almost completely destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire of '06. But the book's appearance makes it clear that it was produced considerably later; and the printers, Chase & Rae, seem to have been active only between about 1914 and 1925. Howes & Mintz call for a portrait, but no other authorities or booksellers record it. Almost all citations of this book, in fact, are vague and confused, reflecting its remarkable scarcity. Cowan (II), p. 457. Graff 3045. Howes N-213. Mintz 142. Towneley, p. 113.

        DUBLINERS

Richards 1914 - First edition. Original maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper cover. A very good copy, some foxing to page edges and contents, boards mainly bright though there is a vertical crease along the centre of the spine. Joyce's unsurpassed collection of short stories, in which he attempts to 'present Dublin to the world'. The book had a tortuous birth: it was to be Joyce's first published work and appear in 1906, but the publication was abandoned during printing due to disagreements between Joyce and his publishers regarding emendations. In defence of his writing, Joyce said famously in a letter to Richards "It is not my fault that the odour of ashpits and old weeds and offal hangs around my stories. I seriously believe that you will retard the course of civilisation in Ireland by preventing the Irish people from having one good look at themselves in my nicely polished looking-glass." After the publication of Chamber Music in 1907 Joyce offered Dubliners to Elkin Mathews and upon rejection approached the Dublin publishers Maunsel. They printed an edition of 1000 copies in July 1910, but all but a few of the page proofs were burned by the printer because of "objectionable" passages in some of the stories. In 1913 Richards eventually agreed to publish the book in an edition of 1250 copies, 746 of which were bound up and the remaining 504 were sold to B.W.Huebsch to form the American edition. The book was published on 15th June, 1914. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Translated into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald with illustrations photographed from life studies by Adelaide Hanscom and Blanche Cumming

George G. Harrap & Co. London. nd. [1914] Quarto. Title page in green and black. Unpaginated leaves printed on recto only, each with engraved headpieces and tailpieces. 28 coloured photogravure plates tipped in, with decorative tissue guards. Full original morocco, with peacock feather design to upper board and spine with morocco onlays in green and blue with gilt. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Small surface mark to lower board. Crease to frontispiece lower corner. In late 1903 Adelaide Hanscom began working on a series of photographs to illustrate the text of Fitzgerald's fourth version of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The concept of illustrating a literary work with fine art photographs was new at that time, and The Rubaiyat was one of the very first American books in this genre. She solicited some then well-known California literary figures, including Charles Keeler, Joaquin Miller, George Sterling and George Wharton James, as models for the project. Hanscom's studio was completely destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire, and with it all of the negatives for The Rubaiyat. That same year Alfred Stieglitz listed Hanscom as an Associate Member of his Photo-Secession.

[NEW GUINEA] Portraits of native people of the Markham Valley region, German New Guinea, c 1914

A group of seven original photographs dating from around 1914, each 115 x 70 mm, five numbered verso in ink in contemporary hand, two with pencil inscriptions in German in contemporary hand: Häuptling von Lae [Chief of Lae] and Eing'ren. Schönheit von Lae [Native beauty of Lae]. Fine condition. These close-up and very candid portraits of native people were taken by an amateur German photographer in the hinterland and area around Lae, on the Huon Gulf at the mouth of the Markham River. The first German Government station was established in this area in 1909, and German mission stations followed in 1910-11.Whether the photographer was a missionary, trader or colonial official is unknown, but the spontaneity of the images and the direct gaze of the subjects makes them a powerful photographic ensemble.

        MISS MADELYN MACK, DETECTIVE

The Page Company, [1914]., Boston - First edition. of this scarce early collection of stories about a female sleuth. Fine copy in the elusive, lightly soiled, white dust jacket with light restoration to the spine ends, corners and extremities. TAD Volume 10, Number 1, page 73 says "A 'solo' mystery volume and a masterpiece. Weir presents a series of short stories in which detective Mack solves crimes in a manner quite ahead of her times. Weir's book is the only one of its period to contain stories woven in the fashion of the golden thirties--a decade in which suspense, mystery, adventure, and deductive reasoning all combined to give us some of the greatest mysteries of all time. There is absolutely nothing dated in Weir's stories--all can be read today with much pleasure. The first tale, "The Man with Nine Lives," is a locked-room mystery in which Madelyn gives her formula for success" solving problems like mathematics, adding, and subtracting given factors until the only correct answer is left, and coupling this technique with understanding of the human motives for crimes. Madelyn is sent a letter from a prominent author who fears someone is trying to murder him as he has been shot from ambush, poisoned, and seven other attempts have been made on his life. The next story, "The Missing Bridegroom," features a dying message. A wealthy bridegroom vanishes, then is found a presumed suicide - till Madelyn investigates. Then follows "Cinderella's Slipper," containing a false alibi clue. The well-liked secretary to a senator is found stabbed to death; a woman's slipper and the dead man's spectacles are Madelyn's only clues. The final two stories are good ones about a vanishing corpse ("The Bullet from Nowhere") and a fingerprint that is not a fingerprint ("The Purple Thumb"). 'Tis a pity Weir wrote nothing further in our genre." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Du dialecte de Tahiti, de celui des îles Marquises, et, en général, de la langue polynésienne.Paris, Firmin Didot frères, 1853. 8vo. Contemporary brown cloth.

Forbes 1914; O'Reilly & Reitman 5435 & 5631; Schütz, The voices of Eden, pp. 145-146 Rare philological study of the Marquesan and Tahitian languages compared with the broader family of Polynesian languages. In this Volney Prize winning study, the French hydraulics engineer Gaussin, identified a number of important aspects which had eluded past scholars (and would continue to elude some future ones). Of ground-breaking importance, was the manner in which Gaussin showed clearly how the Polynesian k had become a glottal stop in Hawaiian. Unlike his English-speaking colleagues, the Frenchman Gaussin also "accurately perceived glottal stops at the beginning of words" (Schütz). Also included in this book is a transcription and translation of a Tahitian story about the Polynesian sea god Ruahatu. With a library stamp and number on the inside of the back cover. Good copy, partly foxed. Binding worn at the edges, title on the spine faded and the top and bottom of the spine damaged.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon.

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1914]. Old Tales from the North. Quarto. Original vellum, titles and decoration to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, gilt and black pictorial endpapers, renewed yellow ties. Housed in a custom blue straight-grain morocco-backed solander box by Zaehnsdorf. Original pen and ink drawing by Nielsen, depicting a prince wearing the artist's characteristic incredibly detailed armour, stood atop a hill and above three trolls, and against a background formed of the titular sun and moon, an illustration which encapsulates some of the key motifs from this collection of Norse tales. Illustrated title page, tipped-in colour frontispiece, 24 colour plates, all with captioned tissue-guards, black and white illustrations to text. Boards very slightly bowed, an excellent, bright copy. Signed limited edition, one of 500 copies, this copy unnumbered. With an original pen and ink drawing by Nielsen on the reverse of the limitation page, initialled in pencil. The richness of the Danish Nielsen's colour images for this lavish illustrated book of Norse pagan mythology was achieved by a four-colour process, in contrast to many of the illustrations prepared by his contemporaries, such as Rackham and Dulac, which characteristically utilised a traditional three-colour process. Extremely rare with an original drawing: we have neither seen or heard of another copy and no other copies traced at auction.

Facey, Kuwait by the first photographers, pp. 50-51; "Danish expedition to Arabia", The geographical journal XLIV (1914), pp. 85-86. First and only edition, in the original Danish, of an account of a journey through the Arabian peninsula. Sponsored by the Royal Danish Geographical Society, Barclay Raunkiaer (1889-1915) set out to penetrate the hitherto unexplored deserts of south-east Arabia. Although he came equipped with a modest amount of scientific instruments and a camera, the use of these became almost impossible. The Arabs looked on foreigners with suspicion and Raunkiaer could use his camera only with great risk at certain unwatched moments (p. 12). At the beginning of 1912, he reached the town of Kuwait, where he stayed at the palace of Sheikh Mubarak. Since it was Mubarak's policy to keep Kuwait free of foreign interference, it took some active lobbying of the British envoy to convince the Kuwaitis that Raunkiaer was a harmless traveller. After that, it seems he enjoyed a certain amount of freedom, as numerous photographs testify, including one of pearl fishers and a portrait of Sheikh Mohammed. Raunkiaer was very impressed by the volume of trade in Kuwait, which he considered to be the most important trading centre on the east coast of Arabia. In Kuwait, Raunkiaer became seriously ill, but his tuberculosis was undiagnosed. After a period of rest, he travelled further to Riyadh. As the first western traveller in the city in half a century, Raunkiaer was graciously received by Ibn Saud. After a short stay in Riyadh, Raunkiaer followed a caravan that consisted mostly of 150 pearl-fishers bound for Bahrain. During a stay in Hofuf, where the book ends, Raunkiaer's health became worse and he sailed to Bahrain to recuperate. From there he travelled back to Copenhagen via Bombay. After a few years working for the East Asiatic Company, Raunkiaer died from tuberculosis.Shortly after the appearance of the Danish edition, the book was translated into German. T.E Lawrence, who considered it to be one of the "readable Arabian books", helped facilitate an English translation in 1916, privately printed by the Arab bureau in Cairo. With a dedication by the author to the Danish historian of religion Ditlef Nielsen (1874-1949) and a few annotations in pencil in the final chapter. Binding slightly worn along the edges, with a small stain on the title. Endpapers foxed with the text browned; some small random pen marks at the lower margin of p. 47. The map with a few tears along the folds, most of them expertly repaired; a very good copy.

        Princeton University Photo Album

      - Wonderful Princeton University photo album, put together by Robert Johnson McClintock '17 (same graduating class as F. Scott Fitzgerald, who left early in his Senior year and never graduated). The album, an oblong quarto, roughly spans McClintock's 4 year tenure (1914-1917) at Princeton and captues the construction of --and earliest football games played at-- Palmer Stadium (1914-1997), the Princeton crew rowing on Carnegie Lake, nice shots of the campus itself and interior shots of McClintock's dorm room and his fraternity (probably along fraternity row on Washington St.). Also includes nice vernacular shots of friends and classmates and his family life. The album is solid and well-preserved to boot, with a clean, sturdy leatherette binding and crisp, clear photos (a number of which are captioned in McClintock's hand) thruout. A nice piece of early 20th century Americana. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
