- Leichte Lichtschatten, Exlibris u. Prägestempel a. V., leichte Gbrsp. Kalender eingebundener OBrosch. Obgleich die Gedichte, Dramen (u.a. Unpolitische Erinnerungen" (1949). (DBE) - So komplett sehr selten!         Das schmerzliche Meer. Frühe und neue Gedichte.

Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Einbandkanten stark berieben, Bll. teils stockfleckig. - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 3. - Jentsch 40.

Po gornoi Bukharie. putevye ocherki [In the mountains of Bukhara. Travel Stories].

St Petersburg: M. Stasulevich,, 1914. Octavo (240 × 162 mm). Contemporary tan morocco-backed brown linen boards, title gilt direct to spine, grey patterned endpapers. 2 plates, numerous illustrations to the text. A little rubbed at the extremities, light browning, a couple of underlinings in the text, private library stamp to verso of the rear free endpaper. First edition. In 1906 Alexksay Vasilievich Nechayev (1864–1915), a paleontologist and geologist from Kazan, made a trip into the Bukhara for the purposes of a scientific survey. However, the present work is his account of the everyday life and traditions of the local people in this isolated locale. The expedition extended into the mountainous areas of Bukhara that had previously not been visited by Russians. Nechaev recounts local legends, the folk tales of the gold-miners, and regional customs and living conditions, at the same time offering descriptions of the stunning landscapes along the way. Nachayev is best known for his pioneering work on the stratigraphy and paleontology of Paleogene sediments of the Volga Region and Upper-Permian rocks of the eastern and north-eastern European part of Russia. Uncommon, OCLC lists just three locations.

        Russian Symbolism Book

Russian Symbolism. Book Maximilian Voloshin "Liki Tvorchestva" 1st  ed. St.Petersburg, 1914., 377 [4], 22 x 17 cm, rebound, hard cover of the time Some wear and rubbing to cover Rubbing and small holes to title page Yellow paper Weight: 600 gr I send it EMS Волошин, М. Максимилиа́н Алекса́ндрович Воло́шин (фамилия при рождении -- Кирие́нко-Воло́шин; 16 [28] мая 1877, Киев, Российская империя -- 11 августа 1932, Коктебель, Крымская АССР, СССР) -- русский поэт, переводчик, художник-пейзажист, художественный и литературный критик Maximilian Alexandrovich Kirienko-Voloshin (Russian: Максимилиа́н Алекса́ндÑ€ович Кирие́нко-Воло́шин), commonly known as Max Voloshin (May 28, 1877 - November 8, 1932), was a Ukrainian-born Russian poet. He was one of the significant representatives of the Symbolist movement in Russian culture and literature. He became famous as a poet and a critic of literature and the arts, being published in many contemporary magazines of the early 20th century, including Vesy, Zolotoye runo ('The Golden Fleece'), and Apollon. He was known for his brilliant translations of a number of French poetic and prose works into Russian.

Ehrenurkunde der Weltausstellung für Buchgewerbe und Graphik, Leipzig 1914.

      - Radierung 1914. 56,5:45,5 cm.

SOUTH. THE STORY OF SHACKLETON'S LAST EXPEDITION 1914-1917.

London, William Heinemann, 1919, 1914. SECOND PRINTING 1919, the first edition was printed in November 1919 and this new impression in December 1919. 8vo, 255 x 155 mm, 10 x 6 inches, colour frontispiece photographed by F. Hurley, 87 black and white photographic illustrations, many photographed by Hurley, 1 double page, 1 folding map at rear, 6 sketch maps in the text, pages: [xxi], half-title, title page, Preface, Contents and list of illustrations, 1-376, including index, original publisher's navy blue cloth, silver lettering to spine, silver picture of ship and silver lettering to upper cover, small central publisher's blind stamped device to lower board. Head and tail of spine slightly bumped, very slight rubbing to extremities, pale age-browning and foxing to endpapers, occasional pale foxing mostly to margins, pale foxing to fore-edges, short closed tear to inner blank margin of folding map, neatly repaired, nowhere near image, old ink name to top of first free endpaper, otherwise a bright tight clean copy. The first issue of this book which appeared one month earlier, was printed on cheap paper prone to severe browning and had a poorly crafted binding likely to split at the joints. These defects were corrected in the second and subsequent printings. See Mackenzie, The Taurus Collection, page 138. Shackleton's most famous expedition was planned to be an attempt to cross Antarctica from the Weddell Sea south of the Atlantic, to the Ross Sea south of the Pacific, by way of the Pole. It set out from London on 1 August 1914, and reached the Weddell Sea on January 10, 1915, where the pack ice closed in on the Endurance. The ship was broken by the ice on 27 October 1915. The 28 crew members managed to flee to Elephant Island, bringing three small boats with them. All of them survived after Shackleton and five other men managed to reach the southern coast of South Georgia in one of the small boats, from where Shackleton organized a rescue operation to bring home the remaining men.         Other People's Money and How the Bankers Use It

New York: Frederick A Stokes, 1914 - The first edition of this extraordinarily important expose of the finance world. While other investigative journalists such as Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, and Lincoln Steffens had revealed the excesses of monopoly capitalism, it fell to Brandeis to demonstrate the collusion of the banks. The book draws extensively on his legal battles against J. P. Morgan, Charles Mellen, and other stalwarts of "the Money Trust." Under Brandeis's guidance, Woodrow Wilson pushed through legislation regulating the finance industry. But thanks to mergers and stock manipulations, many of the issues Brandeis identified 100 years ago are still relevant today. Ownership signature of Nathaniel Stone Simpkins, Jr., a 1909 graduate of Harvard who died in WWI; a biographical sketch of Simpkins in ST. MARKS AGAINST THE WAR notes his "deep moral force" and his "moral bravery far beyond that of most men" (pp. 217-220). Front cover is bright, rear has some light spotting; spine somewhat dulled. Light foxing to pages. An appealing copy with an interesting provenance. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Kaloma - Canvas Art Print

      - Canvas art print of the legendary and mysterious "Kaloma," which features a risqué image of a beautiful woman posing in a sheer gauze peignoir. This print is in color. Print has moderate soil to bottom half and is slightly worn where wooden frame meets canvas. There are three small cracks near image of woman but do not affect content. Wooden frame is in good condition but has light soiling and is somewhat rough on the back. In 1914 this image was on the cover of "Kaloma, Valse Hesitante" composed by Gire Goulineaux, hence the image name "Kaloma." It was also published as an art print by both Pastime Novelty Company and ABC Novelty Company out of New York in 1914 and became very popular. Its popularity resurfaced in the 1960's and again in the 1970's when Glenn Boyer's book "I Married Wyatt Earp" featured the image on the dust cover. Many believe that the woman in the photograph was actress and dancer, Josephine Sarah Marcus Earp, the wife of famed gunslinger Wyatt Earp, but this identification is still controversial. The original photograph was said to have been taken in the 1880's but again this is debated. Although the origin and subject is controversial, the popularity of this bold image is unquestionable. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall

        Princeton University Photo Album

Full leather. Very Good +. Wonderful Princeton University photo album, put together by Robert Johnson McClintock '17 (same graduating class as F. Scott Fitzgerald, who left early in his Senior year and never graduated). The album, an oblong quarto, roughly spans McClintock's 4 year tenure (1914-1917) at Princeton and captues the construction of --and earliest football games played at-- Palmer Stadium (1914-1997), the Princeton crew rowing on Carnegie Lake, nice shots of the campus itself and interior shots of McClintock's dorm room and his fraternity (probably along fraternity row on Washington St.). Also includes nice vernacular shots of friends and classmates and his family life. The album is solid and well-preserved to boot, with a clean, sturdy leatherette binding and crisp, clear photos (a number of which are captioned in McClintock's hand) thruout. A nice piece of early 20th century Americana.

Sound & internally clean. Sir Francis Galton F. R. S. (1822–1911) , half-cousin of Charles Darwin, was an English Victorian polymath, anthropologist, eugenicist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist, proto-geneticist, psychometrician, and statistician. He was knighted in 1909. Galton had a prolific intellect, and produced over 340 papers and books throughout his lifetime. He created the statistical concept of correlation and widely promoted regression toward the mean. He was the first to apply statistical methods to the study of human differences and inheritance of intelligence, and introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys for collecting data on human communities, which he needed for genealogical and biographical works and for his anthropometric studies. He was a pioneer in eugenics, coining the very term itself and the phrase "nature versus nurture". As an investigator of the human mind, he founded psychometrics (the science of measuring mental faculties) and differential psychology. He devised a method for classifying fingerprints that proved useful in forensic science. As the initiator of scientific meteorology, he devised the first weather map, proposed a theory of anticyclones, and was the first to establish a complete record of short-term climatic phenomena on a European scale. He also invented the Galton Whistle for testing differential hearing ability. 8 x 11.75" Heavy set at 18lbs. ; 18 .

Omar Khayyam illustrated by Mera K. Sett.

One of only 250 copies printed. Cambridge, Privately printed & published by Galloway & Porter, 1914. 8°. 5 nn. pages, illustrated titlepage, 15 unnumbered full-page, illustrations, 15 full-page illustrations with titled tissue-guards. Original, illustrated Hardcover (black cloth with gilt lettering on spine and cover). Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. One corner stronger bumped. Interior in excellent condition with some minor traces of foxing. Extraordinary publication, highly underestimated in its originality of erotical illustrations in Beardsley-style. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048–1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), meaning "quatrains". (Wikipedia)nnIn 1914, the Indian artist Mera K. Sett published his illustrated edition of The Rubaiyat. It was privately printed and published by Galloway and Porter of Cambridge, in a limited edition of 250 copies. On the second page of his Foreword, Sett tells us that some English publishers found the naked figures in his work too shocking and considered that they were likely to offend the sensibilities of “decent-minded English people.” Since Sett refused to make them decent by adding strategically placed fig-leaves, publication was eventually financed by his father.
