        Once a Week.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1914 - Octavo. Original purple cloth, title and decoration to spine gilt, title to front board blind. Spine faded to white, covers faded and a little mottled. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author to his wife, Dorothy Milne (née de Sélincourt), on the front free endpaper, "My darling's private copy of her own book. A.A.M. October 1914". With Dorothy's illustrated bookplate to the front pastedown. This was the first of many of his books to be dedicated to his wife, referred to in the printed dedication as his collaborator, "who buys the ink and paper, laughs, and, in fact, does all the really difficult part of the business, this book is gratefully dedicated in memory of a winter's morning in Switzerland". The allusion to "a winter's morning in Switzerland" refers to their engagement while skiing in Switzerland in January 1913: "I proposed to her at eleven o'clock one morning in a snowstorm". This collection of comedic material was originally published in Punch, and was his third such collection. In its review of Once a Week the Times Literary Supplement argued that Milne "had one of the most engaging silly senses of humour in the world". Thwaite, A. A. Milne: His Life, 1990, pp. 149, 158 & 163. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Népszava

Seidler Plakát és Cimkegyár, Budapest 1914 - Designed by Mihály Biró. Original, vintage poster. Chromolithograph. ca. 63,5 × 95 cm. Mihály Biró's striking poster, a scarce piece of the Népszava-series, the advertisement for the social-democrat newspaper with the iconic image of the "Red Man with Hammer". The image of the Red Man with Hammer as the logo of the social-democrat newspaper Népszava (People's Voice) was originally created in 1912 by Mihály Biró (1886-1948). Soon it appeared on poster: the figure superimposed on the image of a front page of the journal as an allusion to the content and the ideology of the "People's Voice". On the present, 1914 version, at the breakout of World War I, the arrangement is similar to the original poster, but here the giant Red Man with his enormous hammer is about to smite the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who chained him and threatening with their arms. Scarce poster, and an important image in the history of political propaganda. Artistically restored. In fine condition. Original, vintage poster. Chromolithograph. [Attributes: First Edition]

Supplementary Note on the Discovery of a Palæolithic Human Skull and Mandible at Piltdown.

14 - Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London Vol LXX, Part 1, April 25th, 1914, No. 277. 1913-14. 8vo. Original blue paper wrappers; pp., xcvi + 103 + [2, ads.], 15 plates (Dawson & Woodward pp. 82-99, plates XIV & XV); wrappers a little spotted, a little foxing to edges, very good. First edition. This is the second of four papers recording the announcement of the discovery of Piltdown Man, one of the most notorious scientific hoaxes ever perpetrated. In December 1912 Charles Dawson, a Sussex solicitor and renowned amateur archaeologist, announced the discovery of a skull and jawbone in the small village of Piltdown, near Lewes, that proved the existence of the missing link between man and apes. The jaw was ape-like, but the skull had obviously housed a human-sized brain. His claim had been verified by Arthur Smith Woodward of the Natural History Museum, and the two of them produced the report to the Geological Society which formally presented their findings to the scientific community for the first time. The effect of their work was sensational; although some scientists were sceptical, Dawson's findings were accepted with great acclaim, especially when he found a canine tooth, described in the 1914 paper, that was neither simian nor human in size and appeared to confirm the discovery of an intermediate hominid. Dawson also uncovered primitive tools, including something that looked uncannily like an early cricket bat, and later a second skeleton, and for the next forty years Piltdown Man was a fixture in man's family tree. It was not until 1952, after a series of newly devised tests had been applied to the remains, that the awful truth was uncovered - Piltdown Man was nothing more than a confection of human skull, orangutan jaw and filed-down ape tooth. All of Dawson's finds had been artificially and skilfully aged and planted in the soil at Piltdown. By this time, both Dawson and Woodward were dead, and there is still much debate over who exactly was responsible for the fraud. It is perhaps telling that the Piltdown discoveries ceased after Dawson's premature death in 1916, although Woodward continued digging the site. It is also worth noting that a number of Dawson's other prize finds turned out to be fakes. Other names to be implicated include those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who lived near Piltdown, and Martin Hinton, a colleague of Woodward at the Museum who fell out with him and may have wanted to discredit him. Whoever the perpetrators, the fact remains that this fraud had serious scientific consequences for over 50 years. Piltdown Man's celebrated place in the evolutionary tree meant that true transitional hominids such as the Australopithecines, discovered by Raymond Dart in 1924, were neglected while scientists swallowed the many red herrings thrown up by Dawson's Sussex excavations. Moreover, fuel was provided for the Creationists' arguments - now that the greatest scientifically verified example of evolution was shown to be false, how could any other scientific evidence be viewed without suspicion?         Archive]: 18 Real Photo Postcards of the West Side Camping Club in Guard, Maryland

West Side Camping Club, Guard, Maryland 1914 - 18 sepia-toned real photo postcards. Some modest fading to a few of the cards, a few have been mailed, overall near fine. A splendid group of photographs of a bunch of cheerful knuckleheads at a private hunting club in Guard, Maryland, where apparently, according to a 1914 Forest and Stream article, they specialized in hunting (and occasionally eating) groundhogs. The images feature about 20 prosperous but casually dressed white men in a tent encampment with a cook shed emblazoned with the letters W.S.C.C. and various semi-humorous signs, and manned by a black cook in white chef's outfit. In one image, one gentleman on the left pretends to play a frying pan like a banjo, while on the right another gentleman pretends to shave the neck of a sleeping man with a hand scythe, while the cook stands in the middle with knife and frying pan, looking not terribly amused. In other images the various men lounge around camp, and in a series of four images, a group of hunting dogs attack what appears to be a groundhog pelt. The few that are postmarked are postmarked in August of either 1913 or 1914, all from Guard, Maryland (about which we can find nothing!).

Herzrhythmustörungen, pp.62-65 Karel Frederik Wenckebach (1864-1940)"Wenckebach was the first to demonstrate (pp.173-175) the value of quinine in the treatment of paroxysmal fibrillation. The same work contains a number of excellent descriptions of various forms of cardiac arrhythmia." "As a result of his studies on the arrhythmias with the polygraph, Wenckebach had great influence on electrocardiography. He also was one of the first to suggest that the various disorders of the heartbeat which were produced in experimental animals were of the same nature as those observed clinically in man."G.E.Bruch & N.P. de Pasquale, A History of Electrocardiography, pp.83f.Garrison & Morton No.2844 Waller 10207

Poems. Selected and Arranged by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson.

Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1914 - Octavo. Original pinkish-brown sealskin by the Doves Bindery, title to spine gilt, gilt compartments, single rule frame to covers gilt, all edges and turn-ins gilt. Spine slightly faded, internally fresh; an excellent copy. First Doves edition, one of a limited edition of 200 copies, 12 of which were on vellum. This copy is beautifully bound with understated elegance to a design by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery, reflecting the restrained style typical of the Doves Press, and is signed and dated "19 C-S 14". The slightly mottled appearance of the binding is characteristic of sealskin. "Cobden-Sanderson ordered sealskins from Richardson's in Newcastles. He apparently liked it, as seal was used as an alternative to goatskin for binding many other Doves Press books. The sealskin used ranges in colour from orange to brick-red or terracotta, and some of the skins were probably specially selected by Cobden Sanderson for their attractive blotchy appearance" (Tidcombe, p. 94). The book and binding were made just two years before Cobden-Sanderson threw the Doves typeface into the Thames, thus concluding the bitter dispute between him and his partner Emery Walker, and bringing the era of the Doves Press to a close. Ransom Private Presses p. 253. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Through the Brazilian Wilderness.

New York: Charles Scribners Sons, 1914. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Illustrated from photographs taken by Kermit Roosevelt and other members of the expedition, frontispiece with tissue-guard; 3 maps, including 1 folding in the rear. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Frederic A. Ames, a first-class American, with all good wishes, from Theodore Roosevelt June 14th 1918." The recipient, Frederic Ames was an early American automobile manufacturer in Owensboro, Kentucky, from 1910 to 1925. A beetle-backed "gentleman's roadster" and a five passenger tourer were the first models offered for sale by the company. The company also produced replacement bodies for the Ford Model T. At its peak the company produced approximately 30,000 vehicles. In near fine condition with light toning to the spine. One of the more difficult titles in the Roosevelt canon to find signed and inscribed, and with such a warm inscription. Roosevelt's popular book Through the Brazilian Wilderness describes his expedition into the Brazilian jungle in 1913 as a member of the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition co-named after its leader, Brazilian explorer Candido Rondon. The book describes all of the scientific discovery, scenic tropical vistas and exotic flora, fauna and wild life experienced on the expedition, as well as the exciting human dramas which occurred during the expedition.

(Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Einbandkanten stark berieben, Bll. teils stockfleckig. - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 3. - Jentsch 40.
