        Hand-embroidered notebook.

[1914] 1914 - Octavo. Contemporary grey cloth over boards, with white cloth covering hand-embroidered in black thread for a full floral panelling, hand-printed patterned endpapers, all edges dyed yellow. The pages blank within. Fine. This charming notebook, blank within, was hand-bound and decorated to a decidedly Bloomsbury aesthetic by Harriette Anne Morrell (1842-1924), and inscribed to her daughter-in-law Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938) in pencil on the first blank, "To Dear Ottoline from H.A.M. July. 1914". Harriette Morrell, the mother of Philip Morrell, was an accomplished artist and needleworker. After her death a memorial exhibition catalogue of her work, Harriette Anne Morrell: A Description of Herself and Some of her Needlework and Painting, Edited by Her Son was published by Basil Blackwell in 1925.         Busting 'Em and Other Big League Stories

New York: Edward J. Clode, 1914. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. First edition. Hardcover in tan cloth lettered in dark brown. 282 pp. Illustrated with humorous drawings. A tight, generally fine example, just a touch of wear at the spine extremities and a tiny tear to the cloth at the head of the spine. Internally clean and bright. Lacking the extremely rare dust jacket. One of the rarest and most sought after baseball books, an autobiographical account of one of the games immortals, Ty Cobb. Much in the same vein as Christy Mathewson's "Pitching In A Pinch" published two years earlier, Cobb recounts tales from his own career as well as stories from around the major leagues of the first decade of the 20th century. A rare book in any condiiton, this is the finmest copy we have encountered outside of a couple in private collections.

World War One Sketchbook of Original Watercolor and Ink Caricature and Cartoons

1914 or 1915 1914 - The drawings are all rendered with an uncommonly precise hand, if by an amateur. Oblong, 17.5 by 25.5 cm. 29 pp. of drawings, ten of which are watercolored, the remained, ink work. Some of the ink work is credited as having come from other sources, and so the artist here copied or adapted from these sources, which include the artist Hansi, or cartoons from the Daily Chronique or The Cartoon. All the watercolors bear no such crediting, and so it is assumed that these and a few of the ink drawings are entirely original. Since it is obvious that the artist, probably this J. Cheuillotte (whose name is on the front cover) had a proficiency with drawing, the purpose of the album might well have been to share some favorite cartoons with others, or to hone his own craftsmanship through emulation. The depictions of the Germans is less about showing them as sinister as much as simply absurd. Light wear and finger soiling here and there. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This paper was written with Gilbreth's wife, Lillian, who had just been awarded a doctorate in psychology and who was also one of the first women to practice in the U.S. with a doctorate in that field.) Condition: There are two very old horizontal folds in the pamphlet, the indentation from which are almost indiscernible. Provenance: Library of Congress, with their 6mm "LC" perforated stamp on the front page, and the LC surplus/duplicate rubber stamp on the rear page. here is also a very faint and small rubber stamp on the bottom of page 2 stipulating "Gift/Author/[illegible]/1916". In the first paper, Gilbreth makes a very very wide statement on how U.S. hospitals could benefit from his motion and materials analysis. His assertion was sort of remarkable, made in the closing sentences: "Scientific Management will cause elimination not only of waste of materials, but of waste of human effort, which is, in the final analysis, the most pitiful waste of all. When your management becomes a science, there will result greater efficiency in you as individuals, and in the great work of the hospitals to which you all devote your lives. We have been very fortunate in obtaining the attention and interest of such well-known leaders as your President, Dr. Howell, and some of the other leading surgeons of this and other countries; but we have not, as yet, been able to obtain any action to amount to anything, because of the fact that the entire structure upon which hospital management is built is wrong. As the incentive, so will the result be, sooner or later. The incentive necessary to adopt the best from the industries does not exist at present." “In the early 20th century, efficiency expert Frank Gilbreth used still and motion-picture cameras in place of a stopwatch to try to improve the efficiency, and thereby the effectiveness, of surgery. One of its key figures was the industrial efficiency expert Frank Gilbreth (who) employed still and motion-picture cameras in his measurements, and he expanded his visual efficiency services -- dubbed "motion study" -- from industrial settings to the medical profession in the early 1910s. When he gained access to hospitals, Gilbreth transformed their operating rooms into efficiency laboratories, covering all available surfaces with gridded lines, and requiring the masked surgeons and nurses to don numbered or lettered caps to aid in his analysis of their movement."         À la recherche du temps perdu.

Paris: Bernard Grasset, éditeur/Librairie Gallimard, Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française,, 1914–27. 7 works bound in 13 volumes, octavo. Vol. I in original yellow wrappers printed in black, with the 8-page publisher's catalogue to the rear; others in original cream wrappers printed in red and black. All in glassine wrappers except for vol. IV. Housed in purple cloth-backed boxes, paper labels to spines printed in purple. Modern bookplate to front free endpaper of vol. I, bookseller's repricing ticket to the spine of vol. II as usual, 4-page errata slip laid-in to vol. III. Spine ends lightly bumped and a few small nicks to spine ends of glassine wrappers, some light rubbing to wrappers extremities and box edges, overall an excellent set. First editions throughout of Proust's massive roman-fleuve which has been judged by many to be the major novel of the 20th century. Proust at first could not find a publisher willing to take a chance on such a substantial work and so published the first volume at his own expense with Grasset. That first volume, Du côté de chez Swann, is the first printing, first issue with all requisite points as described by Brun: the wrappers bear the date 1913; the title page is dated 1914 and has the intrusive printer's slug between the E and the T in the imprint; and the text has all the correct and incorrect pagination as noted in Max Brun's bibliography. Gallimard's Nouvelle Revue Française, which had rejected the book on the basis of a hasty reading by André Gide, swiftly realised the error and came to an agreement with Proust to publish the rest of the work. The final eleven volumes are each of a limited edition, with varying limitation sizes and numbers between works: Le Côté de Guermantes and Sodome et Gomorrhe I (779 of 800 copies réservés aux amis de l'édition originale); Sodome et Gomorrhe III (206 of 850 copies de l'édition originale); La Prisonnière (206 of 875 copies de l'édition originale); Albertine disparue (99 of 1,200 réservés aux amis de l'édition originale); Le Temps retrouvé (100 of 1,200 copies réservés aux amis de l'édition originale).

NORTH OF BOSTON Inscribed to Sidney Cox

London: David Nutt((1914)). First Edition, Crane A3: Binding A, one of 350 copies in this first binding of a total of 1000 printed of Frost's second book. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the poet at a very early date on the front endpaper "Sidney Cox/from/Robert Frost/Ryton Dymock/England/October 1914." The lifelong friendship between Frost and Cox began while Frost was teaching at the New Hampshire State Normal School in the academic year 1911 - 1912, before the publication of Frost's first book. Cox described their friendship in his own book, A SWINGER OF BIRCHES: A PORTRAIT OF ROBERT FROST. Frost's several months living in the old parish of Dymock was shared in part with the poet Edward Thomas whom Frost considered the closest friend he ever had. Thomas compared Frost to Wordsworth in one of his several favorable reviews of NORTH OF BOSTON. England's entry into the First World War hastened Frost's return to America early in 1915 with Thomas volunteering for service later that year and in 1917 giving his life in battle. According to THE OXFORD COMPANION TO TWENTIETH-CENTURY POETRY IN ENGLISH, Frost told Cox in 1914, the very year of this inscription, that the true poet's pleasure lay in making "his own words as he goes" rather than depending upon words whose meanings were fixed: "We write of things we see and we write in accents we hear. Thus we gather both our material and our technique with the imagination from life; and our technique becomes as much material as material itself." An important copy of this early and essential collection by Frost., cloth, Near Fine, lacking the scarce dustwrapper

Beiträge zur Quantentheorie. Offprint from Verhandlungen der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft, 16. Band, 1914.

Vieweg & Sohn, Braunschweig 1914 - First edition, extremely rare author?s presentation offprint (with ?Überreicht vom Verfasser? (Presented by the Author) printed on front wrapper), and the copy of Einstein?s close friend and colleague Paul Ehrenfest, of this crucial transitional paper in which Einstein uses the light quantum hypothesis to give new derivations of Planck's radiation law and Nernst's third law of thermodynamics (Einstein points out that the alleged ?proofs? which try to derive the theorem of Nernst from the mere fact that the specific heat of all substances goes to zero at absolute zero temperature, are not genuine). Einstein had first put forward the idea of light quanta in 1905, but in later years he came to doubt the validity of the hypothesis, despite its earlier success in explaining the photoelectric effect. Einstein?s success in the present paper in deriving two of the most important achievements of quantum theory using the light quantum hypothesis re-established his confidence in that hypothesis, and he began to think again about the interaction between radiation and matter, resulting two years later in his great papers on the quantum theory of radiation. The only other copy we have located in auction records is that in Einstein?s own reference collection of offprints formerly in the Richard Green Library (sold Christie?s New York, 17 June 2008, lot 100). OCLC lists three copies in US (American Philosophical Society, Florida, Princeton), one in UK and one in Switzerland.Provenance: The Austro-Dutch physicist Paul Ehrenfest (1880-1933) (?Ehrenfest? written in his hand on upper wrapper; seven lines in his hand written in pencil on last page of text, commenting on the first three lines of text on the page ? see below). Ehrenfest met Einstein for the first time in 1912 in Prague, where Einstein spent a year as full professor, and the two men remained close friends thereafter. When Einstein returned to Zürich in July 1912, he recommended Ehrenfest to succeed him in his position in Prague, but this was prevented by Ehrenfest?s declaration that he was an atheist. However, just at this time Lorentz resigned his position as professor at the University of Leiden, and on his advice Ehrenfest was appointed as his successor. He remained there for the rest of his career. Einstein said of him: ?He was not merely the best teacher in our profession whom I have ever known; he was also passionately preoccupied with the development and destiny of men, especially his students. To understand others, to gain their friendship and trust, to aid anyone embroiled in outer or inner struggles, to encourage youthful talent ? all this was his real element, almost more than his immersion in scientific problems? ? On his invitation Einstein accepted in 1920 an appointment as extraordinary professor at the University of Leiden. This arrangement allowed Einstein to visit Leiden for a few weeks every year. At these occasions Einstein would stay at Ehrenfest?s home. In 1923 Einstein stayed there for six weeks, after German ultra-nationalists in Berlin had made threats against his life. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Lorentz' doctorate (December 1925) Ehrenfest invited both Bohr and Einstein over to Leiden, in an attempt to reconcile their scientific differences about the emerging quantum theory. These discussions were continued at the 1927 Solvay Conference, where Ehrenfest much to his dismay had to side with Bohr's position in this great debate? (Wikipedia, accessed 29 May 2017). In 1922, Einstein and Ehrenfest published a joint paper in Zeitschrift für Physik which attempted to explain the Stern-Gerlach experiment, the results of which had been published just weeks earlier. Their paper can be considered the first significant contribution to the quantum measurement problem. In 1909 Einstein wrote Lorentz that he had never believed in independent, localized light quanta, because, among other reasons, this concept was incompatible with the division of rays during r

Across the Plains in '54 A Story for Young People of Early Emmigration to California [with] The Captive Maidens or the Prizes Won A Sequel to Across the Plains in '54

No Place: No Publisher, 1914-1925. First THUS. Hardcover. Good. Second Edition, Revised, Corrected and Enlarged by the Author. (Issue unclear. For a long time thought to be the first book appearance of the first part due to extreme scarcity of first edition. First appearance of the continuation Captive Maiden(s)-- chapter headings belie the title's plural, or is the other way around?) 2 parts in 1. [iv], 232 pp. No portrait. Original tan printed wrappers. housed in a custom brown cloth box with clear plastic lid. Good. Light wrinkling throughout text, small light tidemark at terminals, light foxing to fore and top edges, wraps soiled. An odd memoir of a trek from Missouri to California in 1854, return in 1860, and a second in 1865 transmogrified into a fictional account for young readers, notable for its scarcity. For many years most copies were assumed to have perished in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, though this is now considered highly unlikely. Howes N-213.

ADDRESS OF PRESIDENT WILSON AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD BROOKLYN, N. Y. MAY 11, 1914. Services in memory of those who lost their lives at Vera Cruz, Mexico

[Government Printing Office], Washington 1914 - Printed wraps, 8 pages, including the covers. SIGNED by the President at the end of the text. "We have gone down to Mexico to serve mankind, if we find out the way. We do not want to fight the Mexicans. We want to serve the Mexicans, if we can, because we know how we would like to be free and how we would like to be served if there were friends standing by in such case ready to serve us. A war of aggression is not a war in which it is a proud thing to die, but a war of service is a thing in which it is a proud thing to die."Notice how truly these men were of our blood. I mean of our American blood, which is not drawn from any one country, which is not drawn from any one stock, which is not from any one language of the modern world; but free men everywhere have sent their sons and their brothers and their daughters to this country in order to make that great compounded Nation which consists of all the sturdy elements and of all the best elements of the whole globe. I listened again to this list of the dead with a profound interest because of the mixture of the names, for the names bear the marks of the several national stocks from which these men came. But they are not Irishmen or Germans or Frenchmen or Hebrews or Italians any more. They were not when they went to Vera Cruz; they were Americans, every one of them, and with no difference in their Americanism because of the stock from which they came. They were in a peculiar sense of our blood, and they proved it by showing that they were of our spirit, that no matter what their derivation, no matter where their people came from, they thought and wished and did the things that were American; and the flag under which they served was a flag in which all the blood of mankind is united to make a free Nation."         Album dédié a Tamar Karsavina.

Paris Corrard 1914 - First edition. Folio (33.5 x 27.5 cm). No. 276 of 500 copies (plus 12 on japon) printed on papier vélin d'arches, initialled by the publisher. Title with pictorial vignette to head and verso, 18 pp., 12 full-page coloured illustrations on rectos only, printer's leaf at end. Original pictorial wrappers. 4 proof plates in black and white (loose) and 3 original zinc printing plates. A unique ensemble comprising a mint copy of Barbier's early masterpiece, trial proof prints and original zinc printing plates. 'The cover design pays homage to Beardsley [.] and its 12 pochoir plates depict Karsavina in her principal parts. That their purpose is again to stir the emotion and delight the eye of the viewer, not to document the performance, is demonstrated by "Le spectre de la rose," glimpsed at the moment when the phantom lover, of whom the young girl has dreamed after the ball, is about to disappear as the rose drops from her hand.' (Ray). The copy comes with four loose black and white trial proofs that correspond to plates 1, 7, 11 and 12 in the book. Very unusually, the proofs incorporate embossed elements, which do not appear in the final version of the plates. Having experimented with the idea, the publisher opted in the end for flat printing, either to avoid high costs or possibly because the technique did not work well with pochoir colouring. The three original printing plates offered here were used for illustrations 2, 7 and 10 in the book. Together with the trial proofs they give a clear picture of complexity of the process of conceiving and producing a high quality illustrated work. This is the extremely rare children's book written and illustrated by Charlotte Schaller with gorgeous pochoir illustrations throughout. The first of two children's books on the war by Schaller(both written and illustrated by her, and both published during the war. The Belgian army, tiny black figures less than one inch high, wages a futile assault on a pair of Prussian boots that dominate the entire landscape and sky. Corners bumped, covers worn, finger-soiled, inner hinge week, on the whole a very good copy, with illustrations very bright. Very well-preserved (considering its rarity and importance as such an Impressive children's book published during WW I, beautifully executed.         Omar Khayyam. [Rubaiyat.]

Cambridge: Galloway & Porter,, 1914. Large octavo. Original black cloth, titles and decoration gilt to spine and front cover, top edge gilt. Illustrated title, 15 plates with text and illustration, 15 plates with illustration and captioned tissue guards. Slight rubbing to the ends and corners, endpapers toned but the rest sound and clean, an excellent copy. First Sett edition, one of 250 copies printed, of this scarce privately printed Rubaiyat illustrated by Parsee artist Mera Ben Kavas Sett. In his lengthy foreword Sett stakes his claim that his Rubaiyat "is original in being the interpretation of a Persian (Parsee)", and also notes that "Some of the English publishers found the work "too shocking" and "one likely to hurt the susceptibility of the decent-minded English people". They were ready to bring out my Omar if I changed a few pictures at their dictate and tastes, but I would not so much as a single line or a dot. It seems the English (according to the publishers) would rather have the conventional fig-leaf than a cluster of roses. I stated my case to my generous father. With his usual kindness and generosity, he offered to stand the piper to the tune of a private publication." Sett's Omar made sufficient impression to receive the encomium of Rupert Brooke (who died early in 1915): "If Mr Sett has not been universally acclaimed as the greatest draughtsman and decorator living, the fault lies with his own exclusive and publicity shunning nature. His Omar will have the pride of place in my library".
