Manuscript Field Journal - Butterflies of NW India

India, 1914. British India: Mussoorie, Bannu, Tochi Valley, April 1914 - September 1916. An orginal field journal of collections and observations made by renowned entomologist, lepidopterist, and author Harry Diamont Peile, covering almost three of his six years spent in today's northwest India and Pakistan. 109 pages in manuscript, a highly detailed record of observations featuring a sightings chart and approximately 20 manuscript drawings, some of which are coloured. 8vo. Black leather journal with gilt borders and original marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to boards, otherwise in very good condition. London's Natural History Museum, holds in the Library of the Department of Entomology, a Harry Diamont Peile archive, which consists of correspondence from 1921 to 1956, ten manuscript drawings, an entomological notebook with photographs covering his time in Peshawar and Mussoorie from 1911 to 1917, and notes on his subsequent journey from Baghdad to Babylon. Voluminous in data, Peile's field journal is notable in the science of lepidoptry, replete with scientifically named specimens and details of their features, irregularities, habitats and behaviour. Neatly penned in miniscule cursive writing with space for nothing more to be added, and dating every entry, he records not only the hundreds of specimens collected, but others seen in passing. Festidiously attentive to detail, Peile further notes the insects' specific activity and location at the time. He continued collecting and observing even during the rainy season in Mussoorie, his mind evidently always turning to the diminutive fluttering species. The journal begins with an extensive calendar of sightings spanning the three years, over twenty pages documenting the brief period of adult (imago) existence of numerous types of butterflies and moths, possibly also serving to observe migration habits. Other lists include "Species observed at Murree in 1915"; "Species observed to be attracted by animal excreta"; "Localities & Elevations of some species in the collection of the late W. C. Mackinnon, Mussoorie"; and "Records of Expanse of Pieris Canidia (measurements of the wingspan of the Indian Cabbage White butterfly). He makes a substantial chart of dates for first observations of each butterfly in Mussoorie in 1914, and the same again for 1916. An annotation and lengthy list of contents reveals that a myriad of specimens collected were preserved and shipped to London, care of H.T.G. Watkins, Esq. at 76 Oxford Terrace, totalling 32 boxes and including English butterflies collected in 1910-1911, the lot quite likely identifying the very collection which he gave to The Natural History Museum. Excerpts from the manuscript: 13-14 June 1914. "N. narayana (male) Obtained from native collector & eggs protruding from abdomen were put in formalin solution. They are grass green in colour... dome shaped, with minute depressions & studded with short colourless hairs & slightly flat base. On 12th a larva escaped from a box & yesterday was found lying on the window." 26 March 1915. "Successful operations against Zadrans. Among the stone sangars [fortification] on hills & ridges from which the enemy had just been shelled at elev. of about 3500 ft. Euchloe lucilla was very common - & while we had to wait a bit & this action was proceeding further on I succeeded with a piece of the enemy's firewood (a sprig of capparis aphylla) in kneeling over a male and a female lucilla..." 8 July 1915. "Took some 24 aphnoeus hypagyrus settled at flowers of the common Asclepias. The majority have the edges of f. & h. wings more or less frayed from wear. They are very active insects...Took dragonfly..." 17 December 1915. "Rec'd from G.O.A. D. Dun. Callerebia hyagriva 2. taken at Mew Circular Rd, Mussoorie on 5.9.15 - where he only took a few m spite of numerous continued visits to the spot..." 19 December 1915. "Yellow flower, with leaf as below both on long stem... Oxalis cernua... protecive or warming colouration of Butterfly larvae..." 12 August 1916. "(Tabanidae) Pangoniinae... Fly taken hovering. Poised stationary with wings virating over middle of path on open hillside - at level with one's head... had a long rigid proboscis-like organ projecting horizontally in front..." End Excerpts. Albeit wartime and serving with the 52nd Sikhs (Frontier Force), scant few and only cursory are his jottings on war campaigns, other than the various locations which granted him new territory for his observations. From April to July 1915 Peile was in Mussoorie, a hill station in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges, India. From July to November 1915 he was in Bannu District, then part of British India, now part of Pakistan. By December he had made his way to the Tochi Valley, also known as Dawar, a fertile area of the North Waziristan agency of today's Pakistan. December 7th and 8th he writes from the town of Miranshah (now in Pakistan) which lies on the banks of the Tochi River, near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. [In 1905, the British constructed Miramshah Fort to control North Waziristan.] For the majority of January and February 1915 he was posted in Idak, also in the Tochi Valley. An entry dated 26 March 1915 reveals that he was indeed participating in the war, although his mind wanders to what interests him far more... at 3500 ft altitude he notices the large numbers of the subspecies lucilla. In April he is back in Miranshah, in the gardens of the British militia post, where he documents and collects several more specimens. In June 1915 he is in Murree, originally established in the 1850s near Islamabad as a sanatorium for British troops garrisoned on the Afghan frontier. He returns to Bannu in November. From May 1916 he is mainly stationed in Mussoorie, and finding many species near a pumping station nullah (valley), some on Fox Hill, and so on. Peile served 24 years in the Indian Army, including a period as medical officer to the 52nd Sikhs on the N.W. Frontier of India, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and where he collected innumerable specimens of butterflies and moths. In 1937 he published the details of this work in a 360 page illustrated book titled, "A guide to collecting butterflies of India, detailing over 600 forms in the text: Together with hints on collecting, &c., and local lists of species and subspecies." Publisher: London, John Bale, Sons & Danielsson. . Very Good.

        The Peter Pan Portfolio

New York: Brentanos, 1914. First edition. Very Good. Folio, measuring . A Very Good copy of this oversized Rackham production. Cloth stained and soiled, some of the ties lacking. Internal contents are in excellent condition, but for a small dampstain affecting the last three leaves (mostly noticeable on the tissue guards) with only the final illustration affected. The other eleven tipped in color illustrations are all in perfect order. Selling at a bargain for the condition issues. Arthur Rackham was one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century, a period which is referred to as the "golden age" in British book design. His works were produced in both limited and mass market editions as there was a large market for ornately illustrated books before the First World War. Rackham used a unique style, thought to mix European and East Asian influences, that involved both pen and India Ink as well as watercolor. His work was displayed all over Europe - and received awards at International Exhibitions in Milan and Barcelona and Rackham would influence heavily many illustrators, especially those of children's books, who came after him. "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm, Hans Andersen or Poe show him at his most imaginative and observant of human nature, while his gnomes, fairies and gnarled anthropomorphic trees in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens or A Midsummer Night's Dream represent his more fantastic side.... He was - and remains - a soloist in front of an orchestra, a player with the responsibility to interpret and add a personal lustre to great works with variations of infinite subtlety and grace." [Arthur Rackham: A Life with Illustration, by James Hamilton, Pavilion Books, Ltd., London, 1990; published in New York by Arcade Publishing, Inc. as Arthur Rackham, A Biography]. Very Good.

The Wonderground Map of London Town. "The Heart of Britain's Empire Here is Spread Out For Your View it Shows You Many Stations & Bus Routes Not a Few. You Have Not the Time to Admire It All? Why Not Take A Map Home to Pin on Your Wall!"

London.: The Westminster Press.. Copyright 1914. [ 1924.. Color pictorial / pictographic map 29 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Light wear to edges and along folds, now minimized by linen backing; bright, clean condition. Originally published in 1914 as an advertising poster for the London Underground, this design proved so popular that it was subsequently in several different editions. It has been suggested that this particular edition with an image of a lion and "On to Wembley" at the upper left of the map was issued at the time of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley (Roderick Barron). An outstanding and innovative graphic - an explosion of color and humor - it sparked a revival in interest in decorative cartography around the world which continues today, a century later. .
