The Naturalist on the River Amazons

1914 - Reprint. Small 8vo. ,original brown cloth. London, J.M. Dent. Inscribed: ?To D.H. Lawrence, Christmas 1914-1918 from S. Koteliansky? Leonard Woolf described Koteliansky and Lawrence's friendship thus: ?Kot's passionate approval of what he thought good, particularly in people; his intense hatred of what he thought bad; the directness and vehemence of his speech; his inability to tell a lie - all this strongly appealed to Lawrence. When Kot approved of anyone, he accepted him absolutely; he could do no wrong and Kot summed it up always by saying: 'He's a real person.' . Lawrence liked this kind of thing in Kot, just as he liked Kot's ruthless condemnation of people like Murry. . ?If you knew Kot well, you might know what a major Hebrew prophet must have been like 3,000 years ago. If Jeremiah had been born in a ghetto village in the Ukraine in 1882 [sic], he would have been Kot.? Lawrence wrote more letters to him than any other friend. He has been suggested as the model for Ben Cooley in Lawrence's Kangaroo. An excellent copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

East of the Sun West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914. Signed limited edition of one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration. One of 500 numbered copies, this is number 41. Quarto, original vellum, gilt titles and decoration to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. Signed by the illustrator Kay Nielsen. With 25 tipped in color plates. In near fine condition. A very nice example. Laid is the original notice for the Leicester Galleries exhibition held in November and December of 1914, where the watercolors for this book were offered for sale. Kay Nielsen was a brilliant colorist and a highly decorative illustrator, able to introduce images that were sometimes strikingly fantastic... [The style] was uniquely his own, and his depictions of fairyland less sombre than Rackham's... By general consent, Nielsen's most spectacular and celebrated book is East of the Sun and West of the Moon, old tales from the North, translated from the Norwegian of Peter C. Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe (devoted collectors of Scandinavian folk lore in the mid-19th century)... Nielsen's unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations. Drawing in pen and ink, enhanced by watercolour, with an immaculate technique, Nielsen's beautiful books were always embellished with his designs for endpapers, frieze-like patterns, initial letters, and other decorative motifs" (Dalby, 90).

        Standardville, Utah Panorama Photograph

      - Panorama albumen photograph on a dark grey mount and shrinkwrapped. Panorama is made up of seven individual albumen sheets arranged next to each other, and has manuscript on verso identifying location of the image. Taken circa 1914. Photograph measures 20" x 4 ½" and has very good contrast. Panorama is in very good condition with light silvering and light wear at edges; and mount has minor chipping to edges. This image depicts rail cars reading "D&RG," "Frisco," and "Rock Island" in the foreground, and with the town of Standardville, Utah in the background. The Carbon County town was established when a large coal deposit was discovered in Spring Canyon circa 1912 and was called "Standardville" due to its well planned layout. It grew quickly and by 1915 produced about 1,000 tons of coal daily, transported by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and the Utah Coal Route. The mining town thrived through the 1930s but was abandoned by the 1970s. This image depicts the Carbon County town when it had just begun its long legacy of coal mining. Image may have slight glare, please call for more images.

        LIEUTENANT BALL'S LETTERS FROM GALLIPOLI

A complete and fully transcribed archive of nearly 60 uncensored letters written by Lieutenant, later Major C J P Ball DSO MC to his parent in the Isle of Wight whilst serving for the 29th Division RHA in Gallipoli. Ball was in the very first landings and was one of the last to leave, with the letter collection spanning the full period, giving a roughly weekly account with no letters apparently missing. The letters were written very freely. Ball was able to censor his own letters as he writes to his parents in a postscript on July 20th; " You can write quite freely these days. I censor my own letters, & yours are never opened , so you can write as you please". This had enabled him to write in-depth and detailed descriptions of actions, life and conditions at the front and in trenches, and to include material usually censored out. Ball was serving as a 2nd Lt Observation Officer, and therefore made it his business to be aware of all of the battlefield and what was going on.It was part of his job to site gun emplacements to enfilade Turkish trenches, which required reconnaissance in the front lines, which is described in harrowing detail. He worked closely with his Colonel and General, worked for a time as Adjutant, and his superiors seem to have been a useful and important officer. His connections gave him a fair amount of freedom, which enabled him to visit friends on offshore ships, and he was able to have some influence in promoting a family friend . The letters give a huge insight to the whole of the campaign on the Helles Peninsular, and we have been able to match events described in his letters to other written accounts of battlefield actions. The first group of nine letters & a postcard written pre Gallipoli landings from Jan to April, describe his voyage out to the Peninsula .The following 8 letters dating from April 29th to May 29th were written immediately after the landing, telling how he has been under fire, and how on his first night has had to go forward into the front lines. In subsequent letters Ball describes front line actions, night attacks, and how hoards of panic stricken men retreating had to be turned back with revolver threats. He writes about & describes his dug-out and position, how he has dug trenches for the horses, of gains to the front line, and sapping forward the front trenches. He walks over the bodies of dead Turks dug into the bottoms of trenches, complains about the stench and flies, and battles Dysentery. He is sniped whilst on reconnaissance, and has several narrow escapes. Charlie also mentions a friend in the RFC doing observation flights, German submarines in the bay, and the limited amount of ammunition the artillery have, meaning they can only fire so much each day. His responsibilities and the content of his letters change as he becomes Adjutant, and he later describes how the focus of action changes after the ANZAC landings at Suvla Bay. Ball praises the way 'Brother Turk' have been looking after the POWs, but complains that they don't bury their own dead. He displays a strong obsession with food and writes of the army bakery taking a direct hit on the first day of baking leaving them to enjoy just the bully beef and biscuits. Almost every letter home includes requests for luxury food parcels and clothing, and he is also very keen to receive letters from family members. Despite his privations, his letters home are generally upbeat, patriotic and full of a sense of duty, but he does not flinch from describing frightened soldiers, bungled attacks, and appalling conditions. The letters themselves are mainly easy to decipher, despite having been written in a variety of dugouts largely in indelible pencil. We have tried to transcribe the letters without correcting spellings or grammar. Punctuation is a little erratic, and capitalisation is also difficult to transcribe accurately because of Ball's handwriting style. Some names have been troublesome: we are not at all sure that "Danbury" is correct for the name of the Adjutant for example, it looks more like "Daubuz". Ball seems to use "z" in words like realise, but this might be the use of a long form of "s". We use [?] where we are uncertain of spellings or meaning, and any comments are also italicised. We have found two photographs of Ball online, and there were others showing officers on horses included with the letters which seem to show a younger and thinner Charlie Ball. Another photograph shows a soldier, possibly Ball's groom, holding a fine horse, and there are also letters and accounts, an unused Army book, a guide to Egypt etc. Ball's post war career is interesting. He translated a German account of the Gallipoli Campaign which was published, and used his Geology interest in a career in metallurgy, working with German companies, which must have given him some conflict in the interwar period. His diaries and other personal papers are held by the Imperial War Museum in London, Catalogue number Documents:13963. This archive is currently offered to UK purchasers only. Purchasers from outside of the UK can purchase the archive subject to our obtaining export licence approval. An important and very emotive collection.

Programme for Fie! Fie! Fi–Fi! A Musical Comedy in Two Acts.

Philadelphia: E. A. Wright Bank Note Co.,, 1914. Presented by the Princeton University Triangle Club, season of 1914–1915; [together with] Fie! Fie! Fi-Fi! A facsimile of the 1914 acting script and the musical score. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 1996, number 130 of 500 copies. Small quarto. Original paper wrappers, black, orange and white decoration to front cover designed by I. E. Swart, stitched with white string as issued. Floorplan of theatre to last page. Very slight crease to centre, else an excellent copy. A remarkable survival of the original programme from the first tour of Fitzgerald's two-act musical comedy, presented by the Princeton Triangle Club. After premiering at Princeton on 19 December 1914, the Club went on a 3,500-mile Christmas tour, performing at Brooklyn, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburg between 21 and 31 December. A contemporary ownership inscription to the front cover ("Dec. 30, 1914, with Marion Willcox") places this programme at the Detroit performance. Two further performances were held the following year, in Newark and New York, on 20 February and 17 April 1915 respectively, bring the tour to a total of 14 performances. The programme is highly uncommon: institutionally there are just two known copies (one at the University of South Carolina and Fitzgerald's own annotated copy held by Princeton University Library). Fitzgerald's copy of the programme reveals some of his frustration with the final production: the programme credits Walker M. Ellis, the Triangle Club president who revised the dialogue, as the sole author of the book, which Fitzgerald corrected to read: "Book and lyrics by F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1917. Revision by Walker Ellis, 1915". Fitzgerald was also denied the opportunity to act in his own play, since his low grades rendered him ineligible for extracurricular activities – next to the character Celeste in the cast list he wrote "My part – oh Hell!" Nonetheless, he later told his daughter Scottie that musical comedy was "more 'fun' than anything else a literary person can put their talents to", and gave the Triangle Club (which he had cited as a major factor in his decision to enrol at Princeton) a brief part in This Side of Paradise. Accompanying the programme is the book published as part of the Fitzgerald Centenary Celebration, containing full reproductions of both the first edition of the musical score – issued on 17 December 1914, two days before the first performance, and thus constituting Fitzgerald's first published work – and the original privately printed acting script, taken from one of only two surviving copies. Bruccoli writes that "the show was an undergraduate lark. Apart from the bibliographical importance of the printed acting script and the published musical score as Fitzgerald's first two books, the significance of the musical comedy is that it documents Fitzgerald's early professionalism. Before his eighteenth birthday he was mastering the word trade" (Bruccoli, p. x).

        Pakenham Letters 1800 to 1815.

      - [London], Privately printed, John and Edward Bumpus, 1914. 4t. Original red cloth-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt; pp. vii, 261, title in red and black, partly unopened and uncut, printed on high-quality paper; edges and corners of boards with wear, library marks (see provenance), light offseting from endpapers; internally very clean and fresh; provenance: ALS by a relative of Thomas Pakenham, 5th Earl of Longford (1864-1915), the editor of this book tipped in on preface leaf, dated 1919 accompanying the book sent to the Sir Thomas Moore Library in Shorncliffe, Kent (their bookplate and shelfmark). Extremely rare first edition of primary sources of one of Wellington's favourite commanders. The army officer Edward Michael Pakenham was the second son of Edward Michael Pakenham (second Baron Longford) and in 1809 joined Wellington 'who in 1806 had married his sister Catherine (Kitty), in the Peninsula after the battle of Talavera (27â€"8 July 1809). He liked, admired, and worked well with Wellington. He was employed as an assistant adjutant-general to the fusiliers; the officers of the battalion placed his portrait in the mess, and presented him with a sword valued at 200 guineas. He was appointed deputy adjutant-general in the Peninsula on 7 March 1810; no desk soldier, he disliked what he called "this insignificant clerking business" … Pakenham commanded a brigade of the two battalions 7th fusiliers and the Cameron Highlanders, in Sir Brent Spencer's division at Busaco and Fuentes d'Oñoro in 1810, and in 1811 he received the local rank of major-general in the Peninsula, and served with the headquarters staff. At the battle of Salamanca, on 22 July 1812, described by Wellington as the best manoeuvred battle in the whole war, Pakenham commanded the 3rd division, which broke the French centre. The two armies faced each other, and had been moving on parallel lines for three days. They saw each other clearly, from opposite rising grounds, as the valley between was not more than half a mile wide. Marmont's design was to interpose between Wellington and Badajoz; Wellington's object was to prevent this. In their eagerness to gain their point the French leading divisions outmarched those following, and thus left a vacant space in the centre, which Wellington saw, and at once exploited. ‘Now's your time, Ned’, he said to Pakenham, who was standing near him; Pakenham gave the order to his division, and began the movement which won the battle. Wellington wrote to the Horse Guards on 7 September 1812: "I put Pakenham to the third division, by General Picton's desire when he was ill; and I am very glad I did so, as I must say he made the movement which led to our success in the battle of 22 July last with a celerity and accuracy of which I doubt if there are very many capable, and without both it would not have answered its end. Pakenham may not be the brightest genius, but my partiality for him does not lead me astray when I tell you that he is one of the best we have" [Dispatches, 6.434]' (ODNB) He was killed in 1815 during the British assault on New Orleans, a campaign he very much disapproved of because it was more for blunder than military gains. This volume, which is not mentioned as a source in the Oxford Dictionary of Biography unites letters by Pakenham from the expedition to the West Indies and the Peninsular War, including one from Lady Wellington to another member of the Pakenham family and an 80-page memoir by Lt.-Colonel Campbell on the peninsular campaign and the end of Napoleon's reign in 1815. Other documents refer to the New Orleans campaign and Wellington's position. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Book of Genesis.

London: Philip Lee Warner, publisher to the Medici Society Ltd,, 1914. Now printed in the authorised version and illustrated after drawings. Quarto. Original limp vellum, titles gilt to spine and front, green silk ties, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the original glassine wrapper. Accompanied by the duplicate suite of plates in the publisher's gilt-titled grey cloth chemise. Housed together in a brown morocco-backed bookform slipcase and chemise by Macdonald. Title page with lettering designed by Edith M. Engall and central ornament by Cayley Robinson, 10 colour plates after Cayley Robinson bound at the rear as issued, with captioned tissue guards. Duplicate set of the Cayley Robinson plates included loose in the publisher's accompanying chemise. Fine but for the glassine jacket which is lightly creased and with a few small chips and tears around the edges. First edition thus, tête de tirage vellum copy, number one of twelve copies printed on vellum aside from 500 paper copies printed by the Riccardi Press, and accompanied by a duplicate suite of the plates by illustrator Frederic Cayley Robinson (1862-1927). The colophon declares that of the twelve vellum copies, only ten were for sale, making it likely that this was one of only two hors commerce copies. No vellum copy has appeared at auction for a decade. This Book of Genesis "constitutes [Cayley Robinson's] finest achievement as a book illustrator" (ODNB). His "The Death of Abel", reproduced as the third plate and held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, is considered his most enduring work. He also illustrated Maeterlinck's The Blue Bird, and is known for his Acts of Mercy painting series executed for the Middlesex Hospital 1915-20, four panels of which were exhibited at the National Gallery in 2010. This copy of Riccardi's finely produced Book of Genesis has the bookplate of esteemed collector Charles Conover Kalbfleisch (1868-1943), whose library sale, entitled The Arts of the Book, went through Park-Bernet Galleries, 10-11 January 1944. A laid-in photocopy of the relevant annotated page from the auction catalogue for that sale reveals that this copy sold for $80 hammer then. It was, incidentally, from Kalbfleisch that Henry Folger bought the fifth of his many First Folio Shakespares, paying $9,000 for it in 1900.

Das schmerzliche Meer. Frühe und neue Gedichte.

Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Einbandkanten stark berieben, Bll. teils stockfleckig. - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 3. - Jentsch 40.

Fourth blank page bears the 37¢ Wright Brothers 2003 stamp with pictorial December 17, 2003 Kill Devil Hills, N.C., cancellation. Light wear at folds. Fine condition. In part, “Surely it was not that I did not appreciate your ‘shower’ of daffodils and hyacinths and jellies that I have been so tardy in thanking you but because I have been in such vile moods that I didn’t want to go near my desk … Father (and the rest of us) have been sampling his grape jelly to such an extent that one glass is gone…”Katharine became familiar with her older brothers’ business affairs. She and Orville joined Wilbur in Pau, France, early in 1909. While in Pau, Katharine flew as a passenger with Wilbur in front of British King Edward VII. Because her brothers were basically shy, she would do much of the talking to potential buyers. European newspapers called her the “third Wright brother” in jest and when the Wrights left France, the French awarded all three of them the Legion of Honor. When Wilbur died in 1912, Kate became an officer in the Wright Company. The National Aeronautic Association’s Katharine Wright Award was established in 1981 by the Gates Learjet Corporation and is made annually to a woman who has contributed to the success of others, or made a personal contribution to the advancement of the art, sport and science of aviation and space flight over an extended period of time.

Richter. Philada., Pa. March 23, 1914." Schoenborn, who owned a successful cigar business, was the president of the Columbus (Ohio) Senators in the American Association. He is mentioned in the section "Leaders of Baseball" on page 285. In 1901 when it was impossible to raise money to keep a baseball team in Columbus, Schoenborn put his money behind the Columbus Senators, becoming president of the team in 1909. In 1923, Schoenborn was part of the group that purchased the Boston Red Sox.As a writer, Richter was an influent in the early development of the game. Beginning with the Philadelphia Day in 1872, then the Sunday World and Public Ledger, he was the first to set up a separate sports department for any newspaper. Richter was instrumental in the formation of the original American Association in 1882 and helped to place the Philadelphia Athletics in it. The next year he helped to organize the Phillies in the National League and started Sporting Life, a weekly newspaper, which became a force in baseball. In 1907 he was offered the presidency of the National League but turned it down. He edited the Reach Guide from its inception in 1901 to the 1926 volume, which he completed days before his death. A nice association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
