        Lavengro

London, Edinburgh and Boston- T N Foulis, 1914 Book. Fine. Hardcover. A beautifully illustrated edition of George Borrow's semi-autobiographicalnovel. In a signed morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt stampto front pastedown. With twelve colour illustrated plates tipped in from water colours by Edmund J Sullivan. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. It has been considered a classic of nineteenth century literature and follows the son of an officer who after servingan apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack. This allows him to observe London low-life. Throughout the novel theunnamed protagonist meets many Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and sympathetic pen-portraits. Condition: In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Binder's stamp in gilt to front pastedown, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear and handling marks. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the some spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall: FINE..

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Die formale Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie. [The Formal Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity]

Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT. Original Wrappers. Fine. FIRST EDITION, OFFPRINT ISSUE, of Einstein's important 1914 paper on the development of general relativity. "In summer 1914, Einstein felt that the new theory [general relativity] should be presented in a comprehensive review. He also felt that a mathematical derivation of the field equations that would determine them uniquely was still missing. "Both tasks are addressed in a long paper, presented in October 1914 to the Prussian Academy for publication in its Sitzungsberichte. It is entitled 'The formal foundation of the general theory of relativity'; here, for the first time, Einstein gave the new theory of relativity the epithet 'general' in lieu of the more cautious 'generalized' that he had used for the Entwurf" (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940). "According to John Norton ('How Einstein Found His Field Equations'), this major review article was intended to convey the full content of the 1913 'Entwurf' theory: 'The principal novelty lies in the mathematical formulation of the theory. Drawing on earlier work with [Marcel] Grossman, Einstein formulated his gravitational field equations using a variation principle. Using this richer mathematical structure Einstein offered a proof purporting to demonstrate that his theory had the maximum covariance compatible with the hole argument; that is, covariance under 'justified' transformation between the 'adapted coordinate systems' he had introduced with Grossman'" (Calaprice, The Einstein Almanac). Offprint from: Sitzungsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, XLI, 19 November 1914, pp. 1030-1085. Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1914. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. Only the slightest wear; a fine copy. Rare.

Training Manual, Royal Flying Corps Part II (Military Wing) (Provisional)

Original soft covers. Size 13.5 x 11cm(approx.. Condition very good. There is a slight crease to bottom corner of front cover and a 1cm split at top of spine with wear to one edge for 3cm at bottom of spine. Some light fingerprint marks on covers. Otherwise in exceptionally good condition with firm tight binding. First 14 pages are a catalogue of military books then 80 pages of text with final pages of book catalogue up to page 22 at end. Part II came out very shortly after Part I and is the first to carry the title 'Military Wing'. Part I had a more general overview and Part II contains the greater specifics of military combat. This book is almost certainly the first English language volume dealing with the tactical doctrine for the employment of (Royal Flying Corps) aircraft in wartime. In modern parlance it is the first British book of Air Power Doctrine. Written largely by Lt Col Frederick Sykes (arguably the father of the Royal Flying Corps), it was published in early 1914, even before the British Declaration of War on Germany. It is a remarkable book, not only because its guidance is based only on observation of a very few pre-war exercises involving aircraft (the RFC only formed its first fixed-wing squadron in late 1912) but also because much of its content would still be recognisable to a modern military pilot. Extremely scarce.

Collection of 35 Original Photographs Documenting the Adventures of the "Vagabonds": Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John Burroughs, and Harvey Firestone, c. 1918-22

Thirty-five original sepia prints, 5 x 7 inches., showing scenes from some of the many camping trips of the group of prominent men who called themselves the Vagabonds-Ford, Edison, Burroughs, and Firestone. Two matted, the rest loose. Minor rippling, else very good. The idea for the Vagabonds summer camping trips originated in 1914, when Ford and Burroughs visited Edison in Florida. "In 1916, Edison invited Ford, Burroughs and Harvey Firestone to journey through the New England Adirondacks and Green Mountains. In 1918, Ford, Edison, Firestone, his son Harvey, Burroughs, and Robert DeLoach of the Armour Company caravanned through the mountains of West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. Subsequent trips were made in 1919 to the Adirondacks and New England; in 1920 to John Burroughs' home and cabin retreat into the Catskill Mountains; in 1921 to West Virginia and northern Michigan; and in 1923 to northern Michigan….The trips were well organized and equipped. There were several heavy passenger cars and vans to carry the travelers, household staff, and equipment; Ford Motor Company photographers also accompanied the group. The 1919 trip involved fifty vehicles, including two designed by Ford: a kitchen camping car with a gasoline stove and built-in icebox presided over by a cook and a heavy touring car mounted on a truck chassis with compartments for tents, cots, chairs, electric lights, etc. On later trips, there was a huge, folding round table equipped with a lazy susan that seated twenty" (Henry Ford Museum). The group offered here includes some well-known and often reprinted images (e.g., Ford repairing one of his boots, Burroughs picking berries, the men traveling the countryside on horseback), but also several less common, possibly unpublished images, including one of Ford washing handkerchiefs in a creek, several showing the women of the party, and one of Ford's personal photographer George Ebling, who likely took many of the photos in the group.

        ADVENTURES OF THE INFALLIBLE GODAHL

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company, Publishers, [1914]., 1914. First edition. First edition. Author's first book. With eight full-page illustrations. Neat bookplate of Adrian Homer Goldstone on front pastedown sheet, else a near fine, bright, square copy in a facsimile dust jacket. (There have probably been no more than two sightings of the original dust jacket in the past 50 years). This book narrates six adventures of a remarkable master thief. Otto Penzler says it best in TAD, Volume 19, Number 2, Pages 158-159, "He (Frederick Irving Anderson) is one of the distinguished short-story writers in the history of the American short story in general, and the short crime story in particular." "THE INFALLIBLE GODAHL, the first of Anderson's creations, is the most perfect criminal mind ever devised. He does not rely on luck or daring to achieve his ends; he employs flawless logic. It is his belief that, if he thinks a problem through to its logical end, it will be impossible for him to get caught. He achieves his aims so impeccably that he has not only never been caught, but he has never even been suspected of a crime." He states further that this book, "is surely one of the great cornerstone volumes in the far-reaching world of mystery fiction. The omission of the book from QUEEN'S QUORUM, Ellery Queen's selection of the 125 most important volumes of detective short stories, is one of the major flaws in that otherwise excellent work." An exceptional copy of an elusive title.

Fables Illustrated by E. R. Herman

first edition, limited large paper issue4to. (32.2 x 26.2 cms)83pp. on thick and apparently hand-made laid paper, title page printed in red and black, 20 fine black and white plates mounted on stiff card leaves, each plate with accompanying tissue guard on which is printed its caption and number, attractive black and white decorative initial letters and pictorial tail pieces, publisher's full cream parchment, gilt lettered on spine and front cover, top edge gilt, others edges untrimmed, some light foxing of the white card backing leaves, parchment cover bit spotted and dusty especially at edges, else a very good copy of this attractive (and easily damaged) book. Also published in a smaller (28cm.) trade edition.COPAC locates 5 copies only, of which 1 only (Glasgow Univ.) is on large paper. Little appears to be known of Herman (fl. 1890-1930) whose striking 'Beardsleyesque' illustrations beautify this book. We can find no other work illustrated by him. The book is beautifully printed by Whittingham at the Chiswick Press.

Rückentitel "Vorlesungen Mechanik I. [bzw. II.] F.H.". Dreiseitiger Rotschnitt. 4to.

St. Petersburg, Academie Imperiale des Sciences, 1914. - circa 26 x 18,5 cm. XV, 720 pp., 1 f. Cloth (original wrapper bound in) First edition of the memoirs of the last Polish king Stanislaw August Poniatowski (1732-1798), here the first volume in four parts; a second volume was published only 10 years later in 1924. - This copy has a manuscript letter by the editor Goriainow (6th july 1915) bound in: ?General. Many thanks for your kind letter. I have published the first volume of the memoirs of St. Poniatowski and am working at the secend (sic) one, which shall appear as I hope, at the end of this year. Your sister will find in it any mention of her ancestor. The Imperial Historical Society as (sic) published the dispatches of English ministers who have resided at the Russian court. The volumes 103 and 110 centaining (sic) the English diplomatic correspendence (sic) from 1746-1749 give some informations about Sir Charles, who was then minister at Berlin. I am working at the publications of the documents for the subsequienet (sic) years 1750-1752 and meet often with his name. I have no idea of the picture of Walpole in the Winterpalace. Please agree the assurance of my best consideration (sic). Serge Goriainoff.? Sergej Mihajlovic Gorainov (1849-1918) was director of the archive in St. Petersburg. The recipient of his letter and this book was Sir John Hanbury-Williams (1859-1946; his bookplate to endpaper). He served in the British army as a military attaché at several different courts. During the first World War he was a liaison officer at the Russian headquarters and had direct contact with the Zar Nicolai II. The present book must have had a personal importance for him as he amply annotated it throughout. There are hundreds of remarks and references added in the margins. - Uncut, with few small tears to outer margins (no loss), bound in wrapper frayed, binding rubbed, otherwise well preserved.
