26 ungez. Seiten mit 12 jeweils ganzseitigen Farbtafeln. quer 4 . Original HalbGewebeband ohne illustr. Umschlag. Erste Ausgabe.

The Winnowing-Fan: Poems on The Great War.

London: Elkin Mathews,, 1914. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine and front. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy, some mild spotting within, with the jacket a little tanned, faintly marked, and with a some light rubbing to the extremities, but nonetheless exceptional. First edition, first impression, in an exceptional example of the rare dust jacket. The Winnowing-Fan was Binyon's first collection of war poems, and includes the first book appearance of "For the Fallen" (which made its first appearance in The Times 21 September 1914), certainly the most famous memorial poem of the Great War, perhaps of all wars.

W.W.I Scrap Album of Consummate Military Man, spanning the Spanish American War to the first Indochina War

1914. Colonel Charles Sweeny, first American volunteer in World War I France to be awarded the French Legion of Honor, took part in the Champagne campaign of 1915 and was seriously wounded in September of that year. This album focuses mostly on his experiences in France in World War I, and includes real photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, telegrams etc. He was a member of a prominent Spokane, Washington family. It also includes Sweeny's hand written copy of one of noted American war poet Alan Seeger's last war poems, 'Sonnet IX', written before Seeger was killed in 1916 in the battle of the Somme. Seeger was a classmate of T. S. Eliot and the uncle of Pete Seeger, also a French Foreign Legion volunteer who fought at the Front in the same region (and the same village, Craonelle) as Sweeny. Sweeny wrote out Seeger's poem on hotel letterhead note paper from the The Grand Hotel, Budapest. During the war, from September 1914 to June 1916, Seeger wrote poems, diary entries, letters and news commentaries from the front lines. Seeger's 'Ode in Memory of the American Volunteers Fallen for France' was written to be read by him in Paris, on Decoration Day in May 1916. Seeger's collected 'Poems' were posthumously published by Charles Scribner's Sons in December 1916. The album includes real photographs of American volunteers in the battle fields of the Champagne front, in the region around Craonelle, a village in the Picardy region north of Paris, and near Reims. This part of the Front was at the juncture of the Aisne-Champagne fronts, and was considered the cornerstone for the defense of Paris. The Americans here were holed up in trenches; these volunteers included Alan Seeger and Kiffin and Paul Rockwell. Kiffin Rockwell appears in the group photograph, number 6, below. Kiffin Rockwell transferred from the trenches to the French Air Service and was among the first Americans to be part of the Lafayette Escadrille, a squadron of American volunteer pilots. The following are photographs and hand written captions as they appear in the album. Sizes range from 2 1/2 x 3 1/2' up to 4 3/4 x 6": 1. Sweeny in Foreign Legion uniform, caption dated July 28th, 1915; 2. a seated studio portrait of Sweeny, dated 10 Fevrier 1916; 3. wounded Sweeny in hospital with caption, "L'hopital Americain avec le docteur Mc Carthy, October 28th, 1915; 4. a photograph of Sweeny with Alois Vlk (11 Juin 1915) a "volontaire Tcheque" who was later killed 27 September 1915; 5. a photograph signed "Louis Vlk"; Rene Phelezote, Jan 1915, [killed] Fevrier 1915; 6. a group photograph of American volunteers including Denis Dowd (from Brooklyn, NY), Kiffin Rockwell, Fred Capdeville (sic), Robert Trinkard (from Ozone Park, NY), and Edward Morlae, March 1915; 7. Edward Morlae in Jan 1915; 8. Denis Dowd at Chateau de Craonelle April 1915; 9. Chateau de Craonelle Fev 1915 (bombed out shell of the building); German lines were dug in across from the chateau on the opposing hillside); 10. tranchees de Craonelle, Avril 1915 (2 Americans in the trenches); 11. [Fred] Zinn and King "en petit poste, Craonelle, Avril 1915" (petit post is sentry duty); 12. rue et Eglise de Craonelle, Avril 1915; 13. Capitaine Henri Carme, Alsace, Aout 1915; 14. a portrait of Sweeny, 18 Fevrier, 1915 Nomme sergent Craonelle (when he was promoted to sergeant); 15 & 16. 2 group photographs of Willi Peters, Henri Mallot, Henri Carme, Charles Sweeny and Andre Thill at Plancher Bas 2 Septembre 1915, and a further caption indicating that all of them except Sweeny were killed on 2 Decembre 1916. Six larger format photographs are loosely inserted, and include: Charles Sweeny and other Legionnaires being decorated for distinguished service in front of a grand colonnaded facade, likely this is Paris on Decoration Day, May 30, 1916 (3 copies); Sweeny, Decoration Day, clearly visible in the second row as a man in front of him is decorated; Sweeny with a young boy (likely his young son) on Decoration Day in Paris; an American flag marked "Paris, Rouen, Toulouse" and "American Volunteer Corps, Rouen Sept 1914", and includes the names Morlae, Bob Scanlon, Zinn, Lanz--lou, Capdeville, Phel---; A. Soubourz--; Th---. Camp --- Filly Craonelle". (the preceding photographs all large images, 9 1/2 x 7 1/4"); and a photograph of young Charles Sweeny in golf clothing with his brother Robert (4 3/4 x 6 1/2"). Album also includes personal correspondence: a 1917 letter from Charles' sister to Mrs. Charles Sweeny; a 1922 Polish bank draft on Sweeny's Paris account. A later item is a 1937 letter from Nanking signed "du Berrier", to Sweeny in Paris care of Harry's Bar, noting that du Berrier is on his way to see Mme. Chiang Kai shek & asking Sweeny to "join me in my business out here". Two other loosely inserted items are a printed commodities brochure titled "Weekly Review", 52nd Week of Season 1927 - 1928, W. H. Midwood, British cotton merchants and brokers, listing world supplies of cotton as well as coffee, wheat and corn. The second item is a hand drawn pencil diagram of the control panel of a transmitter, showing dials with notes on how to operate them, as well as a note at the upper right, "use to recve code". The verso of the card with further notes on the transmitter, and printed with Samuel Goldwyn Studios letterhead. The scrap album contains 34 pages of newspaper clippings with one page, a series of Western Union telegrams between Sweeny's brothers, concerning the possibility that he had been killed in action. The first one reads: "Morning papers here report that Charles is among dead or missing in charge on September Twenty Ninth. ..." (Oct 5). The last one, dated Oct 9, 1915 confirms that Charles was seriously wounded, but recovering in hospital. The rear of the album with newspaper clippings concerning Charles Sweeny's father, a mining company president and an important Spokane figure. Sweeny (1882 - 1963) a native of Spokane Washington, had a long military career, beginning with the Spanish American War, and an appointment to USMA class of 1905 (he attended West Point for 2 years). He worked in South America for a period, moving to Paris in 1909 where he attended the Ecole des Sciences Politiques. He next traveled to Mexico, fought in the Madero Revolution in 1910, then returned to France at the beginning of the war, in 1914. In Paris, fluent in French, he organized the American Volunteer Corps for the French Foreign Legion, around August-September 1914. In 1917 he returned to the US with the Viviani-Joffre Mission, as an aide de camp to Marshal Joffre, and then received a direct appointment to Major in the U.S. Army. When the war ended he worked for a time for 'New York World' newspaper, in Paris, but by 1920 was back to military work, fighting with General Weygand in Poland against the Bolsheviks, the Russian Civil War also against the Bolsheviks, and in the early 1920s he was appointed General and fought for Gamal Atta Turk, organizing the Turkish Revolution. He returned to the French Foreign Legion around 1925 and fought in North Africa. In WWII he served as Group Captain in the RAF (1940); when the US entered the war he worked with Allen Dulles in Switzerland gathering war intelligence. In the middle of the war he wrote "Moment of Truth', in which he proposed strategies for defeating Germany. Written in 1943, Sweeny laments American isolationism, and the fact that the country is unprepared for an all out offensive. After WWll Sweeny rejoined the French Foreign Legion fighting in the first Indochina War, around 1946. The album bound in black cloth, 9 x 11 1/2, "The Ideal Scrap Book" at front board; cord bound. Toning to newspaper clippings, as expected. The original 1915 photographs in very good condition. A fascinating compilation about a colorful American soldier and likely spy who did his damnedest to be involved in war his whole life. The many different struggles include the Spanish American War, the Mexican Madero Revolution, WWI with the French Foreign Legion at the Western Front, WWI with the US Army, Poland against the Bolsheviks, Russia against the Bolsheviks, in the Turkish Revolution, in North Africa in the French Foreign Legion fighting Abdel Krim, the Royal Air Force in WWII, US intelligence in Switzerland WWII for the American Office of Strategic Services, and Indochina with the French Foreign Legion in the late 1940s.

        Cubists and Post-Impressionism

Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1914. First edition. Light toning to spine, light wear, owner's ink signature on front free endpaper. 8vo. 245pp. Complete with 23 color reproductions of Cubist and Post-Impressionist Paintings, all mounted on card; and 46 half-tone illustrations. Original cloth-backed printed boards, top edges gilt. The lawyer, art collector, author and critic Arthur Jerome Eddy was a key figure in the first generation of Modern Art collectors. This, his most important book, is the first American work to promote these artists, and the first work to promote Wassily Kandinsky. Much of the information in the book was gained from the artists themselves, as Eddy was actively studying and collecting their works. Kandinsky had only been represented by one painting in the Armory Show the previous year: four are illustrated here ('Village Street'; Landscape with two poplars; Improvisations nos. 29 and 30). Other artists illustrated and discussed are: Boccioni, Brancusi, Cezanne, Derain, Duchamp, Gauguin, Gris, Klee, Leger, Lendbruck, Matisse, Picabia, Picasso, Rousseau, Russolo, Segonzac, Van Gogh, Villon, and Vlaminck. Eddy opens his text with the proclamation that "Since the exhibit at the Columbian Exposition (1893) nothing has happened in the world of American art so stimulating as the recent INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF MODERN ART," i.e. the famed Armory Show. In 1931, a portion of Eddy's collection was donated to the Art Institute of Chicago. It remains an important part of the core of its collection of Modern Art. The work was reprinted in 1919, and while that second edition is easily traced in the market, this first edition is scarce.

April 1914 ]

Romano's Restaurant 1914 - 4to paperback under original dustjacket (kind of "tracing paper"), April 1914, 31 pages and 15 leaves (advertisements). Astonishing wine list, coming from one of the most famous london Restaurant "Romano's", at the noontide of its fame (the fragile dustjacket is damaged, good copy otherwise). Among numerous informations (for instance, 5 pages "on the making of Champagnes, from the Wine list of the "Lion d'Or Hôtel Reims"), we find the impressive list of Champagnes (with prices) : Still White Champagne "Cramant" ("very small quantities of this wine are made, and it is difficult to obtain"), Ayala & Co, Binet Fils & Cie, Bollinger & Co, Jules Champion, Clicquot-Ponsardin, Delbeck, Deutz & Geldermann, Dagonet, Duminy & Co, Duval, Chas & Co, Giesler, George Goulet, Heidsieck Dry Monopole, Charles Heidsieck, Ernest Irroy, Krug & Co, Lanson Père et Fils, Moët & Chandon, Duc de Montebello, Mumm G. H. & Co, Perrier Fils & Cie, Perrier-Jouet & Co, Pol Roger & Co, Pommery & Greno, Louis Roederer, Ruinart Père & Fils, St. Marceaux & Co, Schuler Veuve et Fils. The same with the whole list ; Clarets : "Ch. Lafite 1864 ("Very rare and choice wine"), "Ch. Yquem Premier Grand cru 1904" ("The grapes of Ch. Yquem are allowed to ripen and dry on their stalks and are gathered in the heat of the day. The smaller quantity of juice remaining takes a longer time to ferment, and accounts for the sweet flavour and magnificent qualities developed with age by this wine" ; Burgundies : "Romanée Conti 1877 ("Perfection of Burgundy") ; Still Hock : Rüdesheimer Berg Kroneft Cabinet 1904 ("The most perfect Hock in the world") ; Ports : Martinez '75 bottled '78 ("A good example of a light and beautifully flavoured vintage") ; Very scarce brandies, like the "Café Voisin, Grande Fine Champagne 1811" !!! and so on. At the end we can find the Cigars and Cigarettes list ("Coronas Aquila Imperiales" or "Flor de Neraldo")."Perhaps it is well that Romano's should go-for the people who made it the place it was and also the life it reflected, really went down into destruction with the war of 1914. It survived long after that but never quite the same, never quite so free and easy, never quite the same true piece of Bohemia it had been in the days of golden currency, of which it was so much a part. It belonged to the days when wars were far distant, small and professional affairs, and when such things as coupons and points were unknown and unthought of. To Romano's flocked the Bohemians, men and women of the greasepaint, authors, journalists, artists of all kinds, soldiers, sailors (but not of " other ranks"), men of the law, of finance, of the race-course and the prize-rings-and crooks as well. The place was really an informal club of which they were all members and of which they respected the rules. If you were an outsider visiting Romano's you soon found out whether you " belonged- or not." (W. Macqueen Pope, "Ghosts & Greasepaint") Langue: Anglais [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Lavengro

London, Edinburgh and Boston- T N Foulis 1914 - A beautifully illustrated edition of George Borrow's semi-autobiographicalnovel. In a signed morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt stampto front pastedown. With twelve colour illustrated plates tipped in from water colours by Edmund J Sullivan. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. It has been considered a classic of nineteenth century literature and follows the son of an officer who after servingan apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack. This allows him to observe London low-life. Throughout the novel theunnamed protagonist meets many Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and sympathetic pen-portraits. Condition: In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Binder's stamp in gilt to front pastedown, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear and handling marks. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the some spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall: FINE. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Camera Work No 47, July 1914 (Signed by Stieglitz)

New York: Camera Work, 1914. Vintage issue of "Camera Work," lengthily INSCRIBED by founder Alfred Stieglitz to friend and fellow gallery owner Charles Daniel, who contributes to this issue, on the first blank and dated March 30, 1915. Issue 47 of "Camera Work" was unusual in that it did not feature any photographs, artwork, or criticism, and instead focused entirely on the question "What is 291?" referring to Stieglitz's groundbreaking modern art gallery at 291 5th Ave in New York City. Contributors, who included Anne Brigman, Djuna Barnes, Man Ray, and Edward Stiechen, among many others, framed their answers as poems, reminisces, essays, and riddles. Stieglitz inscription references the content of the issue, saying "What is 291? This book tries to tell us - does it succeed? I think it comes close to doing so..." Daniel was a restauranteur and art collector who, inspired by 291 Gallery, opened his own eponymous gallery, one similarly focused on both photography and avant garde art. A key association between two influential figures in the popularization of modern art in the United States. Good only, with the spine missing, with wrappers and several leaves loose, but collating as complete. Light offsetting to the page with the inscription, front wrapper chipped at the lower corner. Pages generally in Very Good plus or better condition.

[Part 4 of] The Golden Bough: Adonis Attis Osiris Studies in the History of Oriental Religion

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1914. Third edition, Revised and Enlarged. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark green cloth, titles gilt to spines, large rectangular gilt block of mistletoe tracery on front boards. With the typographical dust jackets. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard to Volume I. Spine of Volume 1 a little rolled, faint marks to boards, slight tanning to free endpapers. A very good copy in bright jackets with vertical creases where they were once folded inside the books Part 4 of the definitive third edition of Frazer's classic work of social anthropology. With the author's clipped signature dated 19 February 1921 mounted to both front pastedowns. First published as a two-volume work in 1890 the Golden Bough was expanded to 12 volumes in the third edition (a supplementary thirteenth volume, entitled Aftermath, was published in 1936). "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB). Scarce with signature.

Cammarota, Futurismo, 279.1. Salaris, Bibliografia, p. 111a. Italiano

Typed Letter, Signed, to Lippmann, June 10, 1914.

1914. Friendly Letter from Hand to Walter Lippmann Regarding Socialism and the (Often Dreary) Life of a Judge Hand, Learned [1872-1961]. [Lippmann, Walter (1889-1974)]. [Typed Letter, Signed, To Lippmann, On U.S. District Court Letterhead, June 10, 1914]. Two 10-1/2" x 8" sheets. Some toning, fold lines, two vertical and one horizontal, a few minor corrections by Hand, letter signed L.H. * A friendly letter from of the most significant American jurists of the twentieth century to one of its most influential journalists. Hand, a judge of the U.S. Southern District of New York, later a judge of the Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, was renowned for his judgments, which were also admired for their lucidity and elegance. Lippmann, a writer, reporter, editor and syndicated political commentator, was a highly influential figure in political life and one of the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War. In this letter Hand touches on social matters, mentioning that "Felix [Frankfurter] is back in town," and laments, humorously, the drudgery of faced by judges, "most of whose living hours are consumed in reading testimony. I know see why people in former times went to such extravagances in telling judges what great men they were. If they had not baited the hook in some such way the poor suckers would never have bitten." He also teases Lippmann for joining the Socialist Party and defends his allegiance to Progressivism: "I do not like your political sneers and I do not think they are sincere. My Progressive flag is nailed to the mast and I propose to play the Star Spangled Banner while the ship sinks. My position in the band is to beat the bass drum softly. I don't know what position you have in the Socialist Party; I suspect it is in the last line of the water carriers, with a distinct tendency to desert, at that." As the tone of this letter indicates, Hand and Lippmann were good friends, and would remain so until Hand's death in 1961.

He retired to California in 1927, sometime commodore of the Newport Beach Yacht Club. All of the inscriptions are dated May 12 1921 in Plainsfiled, NJ, home town of his wife Abbie, née Holstein. A not unattractively, if rather stiffly, bound group of the works of the "Prairie Troubadour", who was famed for his declamatory, performance poetry, with a pleasing Springfield association.
