Numerous text illustrations. Index. Corners rubbed, minor soiling. A very good copy. Edward Almack (1852-1917) was a noted book collector and writer on books. His publications include A Bibliography of The King's Book, or Eikon Basilike (1896), The Cavalier-Soldier's Vade-Mecum (1900), The History of the Second Dragoons: "Royal Scots Greys (1908), and Bookplates (1910). The present book features a running account of Almack's experiences as a book collector. The bindings illustrated are largely the work of Samuel and Charles Mearne, premier English binders of the seventeenth century.

        Carnacki The Ghost Finder

      London, Eveleigh Nash. 1913, 1913. First Edition. 8vo. 287pp. +16pp. ads. Beautifully bound in recent burgundy morocco leather titled and decorated in gilt to the spine and front boards. Internally clean and fresh with some minor spotting. A handsome and solid edition of an increasingly rare and important collection of weird tales. An attractive example of the first edition of Hope Hodgson's Carnacki stories. The 1913 Eveleigh Nash edition, apart from being very scarce and valuable, doesn't contain three additional Carnacki stories unearthed by Derleth in his research and added to the Mycroft/Moran publication of 1947. Much under-appreciated today William Hope Hodgson was, for the duration of his short life, an amazing man. He ran away to sea, travelled the world, was one of the first men to photograph stalk lightning on the open ocean, was an accomplished photographer, taught self defense to the police force, founded his own school of fitness, wrote a large body of wierd and macabre fiction (much of which, unsurprisingly deals with the sea), tried very hard at everything he attempted and finally got killed in 1918 as part of an army of young men led to war by a Field Marshall whose contribution to history (other than to get them all killed) was to firmly believe that machine guns were overrated and that cavalry were to be the deciding factor on a battlefield which consisted of one giant, flooded pothole. Notwithstanding historical tragedy, the Carnacki stories represent some of Hodgson's most entertaining work, foremost amongst which would have to be The Whistling Room, a tale any writer of the macabre would have been proud of.       Paris: Mabileau & Co., 1913. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. 15 3/4 x 28 3/8 inches. 17 3/4 x 35 3/8 inches. Organized in 1906 by the Automobile Club of France, the Grand Prix was divided into multiple racing classes based on weight. The lowest of these four classes included motorcyles and tricycles. Here Graeme Fenton races a Clement autocyclette equipped with Pneu Dunlop tires. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut (1879-1909) produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite M. Montaut, Ernest's wife, continued his work after his death producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she usually used "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

Scarce volume in the even scarcer dustjacket, the front of which is almost intact and preserves the photographic illustration of 'Officers of the 21st Co. in Mess Dress (taken at Uppington)'. Almost half the back of the dj is missing. The whole is soiled, rubbed and creased with several small tears, losses to corners and fraying to spine tips but dustjacket now protected from further loss. Book is almost vg. Red cloth black. Bright with soiling to edges; corners and spine bumped; 3" split to front joint of spine head. No inscriptions or foxing; page edges spotted. xxxiii inc. List of Subscribers; 434 pp; b/w plates and ills. in text. Large, folding, coloured map 'Reference Plan of Part of South Africa Showing the Routes traversed by the 21st and 22nd Cos.       1913. [fine in fine jacket] New York: The Century Company, 1913. 1 page undated ads. Original light green cloth decorated in dark green and black, with dust jacket. First Edition of London's prizefighting tale about "a white backwoods giant who would rather read Browning than slug his opponents" [Sinclair], prompted by his coverage of the Johnson-Jeffries fight in Reno. The very title of this book indicates London's preoccupation with the concept of the "brute" which underlies the social behavior of men and animals alike. London had recently left Macmillan in a dispute over royalties, but would find Century to be much less patient or understanding; he ultimately had to beg his former publisher to take him back. THE ABYSMAL BRUTE includes a frontispiece by Gordon Grant.~This copy is in the second binding state, which is identical to the first except for color, and is in remarkably fine, bright condition. The three-color pictorial dust jacket shows a man carrying a rifle with a buck slung over his shoulder; quite scarce, the jacket is just about fine as well, with only the merest hint of edge-wear.         A BOY'S WILL

      London: David Nutt, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. A spectacular copy with an exceptional association. Original bronzed brown pebbled cloth, gilt-lettered on the front cover. Crane A2: First Issue, Binding A of Frost's first book. Less than 350 copies of the first issue in the first binding were issued, from a total edition of 1,000. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To William Stockhausen/this a first of my first/Robert Frost/and pleased to meet it/again so fresh after all/these years/Dec 26 1960." In addition on the front endpaper is the pencil ownership signature of Henry James, Jr. with a 55 East 65th St. address. According to the SOTHEBY PARKE BERNET catalog of THE WILLIAM E. STOCKHAUSEN COLLECTION, 1974, "this copy is most certainly from the library of Henry James the novelist. The owner name is in the hand of his nephew Henry James but appears to be an identification of source. The nephew inherited a large part of the novelist's library on the author's death in 1916. He never used either Jr. or Henry James II but his uncle did use the latter. Since this is evidently not his own ownership inscription it appears to be more than likely that he wrote it to identify those books which had come from his uncle's library." A copy of NORTH OF BOSTON also inscribed to Stockhausen had a similar ownership signature. This copy of A BOY'S WILL was last on the market in 1977, and a letter from the well-known bookseller to the buyer is laid in. Housed in a cloth chemise and handsome brown morocco-backed cloth slipcase.

        The Pavilion on the Links

      London: Chatto & Windus. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. This book has been used as a Robert Louis Stevenson "scrapbook" by New Zealand librarian and bibliographer W. H. Trimble (1860-1927). Newspaper clippings, reviews, and clippings from bookseller's catalogues relating to Robert Louis Stevenson have been pasted to blank areas throughout the book, particularly to the endpaperse. A handwritten index to the names referred to in the clippings by Trimble is pasted to the front endpaper. Of particular interest in this copy is a clipping of Stevenson's signature pasted to the title page, "R. L. Stevenson", with the comment in Trimble's handwriting: "The autograph at the top corner of this page is a genuine Stevenson signature cut out of a volume from Stevenson's library at Vailima." After Trimble, this book comes from the collection of New Zealand journalist, author and book collector Pat Lawlor. Pencil note by Lawlor on front endpaper: "Note: The fact that W. H. Trimble has certified to the authenticity of Stevenson's signature on the title page is significant guarantee of its genuineness / Pat Lawlor". Lawlor also wrote an interesting desciption of the clipped signature found in this book in "Books and Bookmen" (Wellington: Whitcombe & Tombs, 1954, page 33): "There is a sinister unsigned inscription in my copy of The Pavilion on the Links which I bought at a Wellington book auction: 'The autograph at the top corner of this page is a genuine Stevenson signature cut out of a volume from Stevenson's library at Vailima.' True enough there is the neat R.L.S. autograph pasted on the title page, making me think of a grave snatcher who has cut the hand from a corpse so that he might have the ring on the finger." viii, 96 pages + colour frontispiece + b&w plates.       London: MacMillan, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very mild rubbing to extremities; foxing to endpapers though the inscription by Wells is largely unaffected. Much later unknown name on rear endpaper. Near Fine. Olive green cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front free endpaper by the author: "H.G. Wells/to/His Paston." "His Paston" was author Emily Morse Symonds (1860-1936), who used the pseudonym George Paston on her many novels, plays, and biographies. Her recurring theme was women's struggle to achieve independence of mind and action despite contemporary legal and social constraints. In his own work, Wells repeatedly expressed feminist sympathies. THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS is an example; here Wells laments the fine qualities in women that are "entangled and stifled and unable to free themselves from the ancient limiting jealousies which law and custom embody." Vladimir Nabokov considered this novel one of the most undervalued of the century. Bookplate on front pastedown of Henry Symonds, father of Miss Symonds. A fine association recording one of the relationships in the London circle of writing feminists, suffragists, socialists, and birth-control advocates.

        Grand Canyon of Arizona - From Hermit Rim Road

      New York: Printed by American Lithographic Co. and Published by Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway System, 1913. Colour-printed lithograph. 27 x 35 inches. This majestic print is the largest and most dramatic of Thomas Moran's printed works. It was published by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad in 1912, after the original oil commissioned for (and still owned by) the line. It shows a tremendous sweep of the scenery of the Grand Canyon from the Hermit Rim, with the bright colors of the Canyon shown dramatically against the turbulent sky. Thomas Moran, famous for his superb landscapes of the West, first painted the Grand Canyon in 1873 when he painted his "Chasm of the Colorado," which he sold to Congress the following year. In 1892 he visited the Canyon as a guest of the Santa Fe Railroad, whose line now brought tourists within easy reach, and painted a large canvas for the line in return for a free trip. The SFRR completed a spur line to the rim in 1901, and consistently sponsored "artist's excursions" there from 1901 to 1912, as well as purchasing paintings for promotional efforts. In 1912 the railroad capped twenty years of association with Moran by commissioning this picture and producing this large chromolithograph. Almost all copies of this Moran print were soon trimmed and framed, and distributed by the SFRR as promotional gifts. Few of these have survived, generally being badly framed, usually without glass, and displayed in poor conditions. A small number remained in the archives of the railroad, and so have retained their untrimmed and pristine state. The present copy is in this uncirculated condition. A couple of tiny abrasions to the edges otherwise this is a fine copy of this lovely edition, beautifully printed on fine quality hand made paper and in a decorative leather binding.

His two lovers, Billy and Saxon Roberts, are frail and human. Jack himself appears three times in the book as their guide on their pilgrimage to the Valley of the Moon, an old Indian name for the Sonoma Valley... Billy is Jack without education. He has only his fists and his decency and his knowledge of horses to take him back to the farm... Saxon is Charmian without polish... [She] is older than her husband, and she treats him like a great man-boy. She also loses her child... Billy then turns into an alcoholic brute, liable to sullenness or mad rages; but with the beginning of their pilgrimage through the California countryside to the Valley of the Moon, he is restored to the gentle lover she has always known. The moral is clear. The mess of the cities corrupts and destroys lovers and workers. Only back on the road or the land can they find space and harmony...~Jack himself was slowly retracing his path from his long sickness to an acceptance of the commonplace. [Sinclair]~Included as a stopover on the "pilgrimage" is a sarcastic view of George Sterling and the rest of "The Crowd" in the bohemian artists' colony at Carmel.~THE VALLEY OF THE MOON was Jack's first book back with Macmillan; he had had to beg them to take him back, after he had left them for Century. The cover design, signed "G.H." like several of the earlier ones, is one of the most attractive in the London oeuvre. For some reason, although a considerable number of copies was produced, this is quite a scarce title -- and the soil-prone bright orange cloth makes fine copies particularly difficult to find.         Scott's Last Expedition

Two volumes, large octavo, extensively illustrated including a frontispiece in each volume, six photogravures and 18 coloured plates, many full-page black & white plates, maps, diagrams, and a panorama; some maps with folds reinforced, a fine copy, in contemporary quarter morocco. An excellent association copy signed by two of the surviving expeditioners. This is the first edition of the famous official expedition account, arranged from Scott's journals which were retrieved when his tent was discovered in 1912.This set is signed by Lieutenant-Surgeon G. Murray Levick in both volumes, and by Lieutenant Edward R.G.R. Evans, second-in-command on the Terra Nova, in the first: Murray Levick joined Scott's final expedition as surgeon and was second in command of the Northern Party, carrying out extensive studies on birds and marine life.Scott's achievement in reaching the South Pole on January 18, 1912, is inextricably linked with the sense of heartbreak at having been beaten to the Pole by Amundsen by just thirty-four days, and the disastrous return journey in which Scott, Evans, Oates, Bowers, and Wilson all perished.Scott wrote in a letter composed to his wife, "but for my own sake I do not regret this journey, which has shown that Englishmen can endure hardships, help one another, and meet death with as great a fortitude as ever in the past. We took risks, we knew we took them; things have come out against us, and therefore we have no cause for complaint, but bow to the will of providence, determined still to do our best to the last... Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman.         Grand Prix d'Amerique, Goux le gagnant sur Peugeot à Indianapolis (Indianapolis 500), 1911

      Paris: Mabileau & Co., 1913. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from a 1 1/2" tear in the top margin. 15 3/4 x 32 1/4 inches. 17 5/8 x 35 3/8 inches. The Lion-Peugeot of Jules Goux at Indianapolis in 1911. This was the last year of this complex car. The new Peugeot Company began racing in 1912, and won the Indy with Goux at the wheel in 1913. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut ( 1879-1909) produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite M. Montaut, Ernest's wife, continued his work after his death producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she usually used "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

        A Study of Maya Art, Its Subject Matter and Historical Development

      Cambridge: Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology. 1913. Based on Spinden's 1909 doctoral thesis at Harvard and here Published as Volume VI of the Peabody Museum's Memoirs, this is the seminal study of Maya art and archaeology. Spinden was the first to study the range of Maya art, delineate its subject matter, and identify themes and motifs within the art and architecture of Maya society, including religious and philosophical ideas and calendrical notations. Probably the most important single volume ever published on the Maya. This copy is rebound in green buckram, and extra-annotated and illustrated in at least two hands. A (bookseller's?) note on the front free endpaper suggests the possibility that the annotations were those of the author, and indeed many of them seem to be of the type that an author would do if he were preparing a revised edition of his book. Some of the annotations correct errors in the earlier text, while others add new drawings, commentary or analysis, presumably based on information not available at the time of original publication. No revised edition of A Study of Maya Art was ever produced, however, so there is no corrected or updated text against which to compare this. Spinden, after gaining his PhD at Harvard, became the Assistant Curator of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and from there went on to become the Curator of Mexican Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard's Peabody Museum, perhaps the most prestigious post in the country for a Mayanist. Spinden also developed a widely accepted correlation between the Maya calendar and the Western calendar, which was called into question by J. Eric S. Thompson, the British Mayanist. The controversy got heated, and Spinden spent much of the rest of his time devoted to the Maya defending his correlation. It may be this controversy that pre-empted a new edition of his classic study. Thompson's correlation, or one or two days off from it -- Spinden's and Thompson's were 260 years apart -- is widely accepted today, although the issue is not without controversy even now. In any case, this is an extra-annotated copy of the first important work of Maya scholarship and, by all appearances, a unique copy. A bit of wear to the edges of the cloth, overall near fine. .

Front panels with circular device in gilt, green, blue and silver with four illustrations alongside, all in gilt and within a shield border. In the rare original dustwrappers with dark blue lettering to spine and front panels with cut out holes on the front panels to show the circular emblem. Some very minor chipping to the edges of the wrapper for volume one, volume two's wrapper with a large thumb sized area of loss to the front panel and a little more chipping to the extremities. Overall a lovely tidy set of books kept in wonderful condition by the still very good original publishers dustwrappers.

Rebound in dark brown leather, gilt tooling to the margins front and back, and to the edges of the boards, gilt tooling and titling to the spine with 5 raised bands. rubbing of the edges of the boards, and the heel of the spine. The rear board has a moisture mark to the right hand side fron the centre to the hinge rising to 2/3rd of the height of the board, with a couple of pressure indentations. Both marbled endpages have short cracks at the hinges, BUT the hinges are sound. Marbling of the text block edges. Pasted to the front paste down is the book plate of M. J. McNally, featuring a dorsal view of a naked woman looking at an opened book that is just slightly smaller than herself. The bookplate has "H.T.P." printed at the lower rhs of the image; The half title page in inscribed in ink pen "To my friend M.J. McNally, with the author's compliments, C. J. In 1910 Montague Glass published Potash and Perlmutter, a collection of stories written in vernacular and dealing with two partners in the cloak-and-suit business. They were immensely popular, and led to a number of sequels and dramatizations, among them the one celebrated here in Raven Hill's lively and expressive drawing Leonard Raven Hill (1867-1942) was born in Bath and studied at the Lambeth School of Art, and in Paris with Bouguereau(1885-87). On his return he became a prolific contributor to various British publications. "Altogether", note Bryant and Heneage, "he was one of the most celebrated black and white artists of the period". In 1896 he joined Punch, an association which lasted 40 years, and ended only when his eyesight began to fail in 1935. "In his prime he was a fine strong draughtsman, good at portraying character and making the most of a wide range of jokes." This drawing shows Potash, and Perlmutter, surrounded by other characters in the play; it probably appeared in Punch around 1913 A SPLENDID THEATRICAL DRAWING BY A NOTABLE ARTIST

Collection of 30 silver-print original photographs of female nudes, seemingly of the same model in various poses and states of undress, many with props - bow & arrows, hand-mirrors, flowers, filmy garments…; each with the Aurora Studio imprint & negative number with the date of 1912 or (mostly) 1913 in the plate; each also with their stamp on back, stating "For Artists Use Permission is given to copy this photo in any medium except photography for use in illustration, designs, mural decorations, etc. The Aurora Studios Boston, Mass." the images are not mounted and are printed on good quality heavy photographic paper stock; average size 5" x 8" with some having a more slender format, according to the pose in the image; found loose within a small portfolio with plain polished paper-covered boards, cloth spine, original black cloth ribbon ties; some wear and fading to the portfolio, previous owner pencil name on endpaper; all images clear, strong with good light and contrast, very professional and in very good condition; a very good group of this genre, especially interesting as being of one model and within a specific and short time period; documenting the history of photography in erotic art, here presented as 'artistic' studio aids. .       1913. 1. ABC. (CUBIST) A B C D by Andre Blandin. Bruxelles: Imprimerie Scientifique Charles Bulens, no date, circa 1913. 4to (8 1/2 x 10"), cloth backed pictorial boards, slight bit of rubbing on one page else Fine. Printed on one side of the paper, each leaf features a stunning color picture of a Dutch doll and other inhabitants of a cubist world. The text consists of a one word title in 3 languages: French, English and German printed in red at the bottom of the page. Little is known about Blandin who was a Belgian artist. His association with Guillaume Apollinaire led to organizing the first exhibition of cubist and fauvist art in Belgium. This is one of the most striking alphabets in any language and quite rare.
