Boards slightly bowed; about an inch of the spine neatly and professionally repaired at the top, slight wear at the heel. Near Fine, lacking the publisher's cardboard slipcase. Small quarto (6-1/2" x 9-3/4"); dark brown paper boards stamped in gilt on front and spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece photograph of Lincoln Steffens with tissue guard. One of only 500 copies of Reed's first book, a poem subtitled "The mad recreant knight of the west." This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Reed on the front endpaper: "To Louise/with everything/John Reed." Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of three, which centered on Reed's life, notably his romance with Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, and his early death at 33 in Moscow. Reed's best known book, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is Reed's firsthand account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917. Steffens's complex and, ultimately, doomed effort to mediate in the infamous 1911 McNamara trial in Los Angeles inspired Reed's composition of this "Christian allegory." The McNamara brothers, John and James, leaders of the radical international association of bridge and structural iron workers union, were indicted for the 1910 dynamiting of the LOS ANGELES TIMES building which killed twenty people. Initially supporters of the McNamaras protested that the charges against the brothers were trumped up and that the deadly explosion was attributable to faulty maintenance by management. But as the trial dragged on even the brothers' own lawyer, Clarence Darrow, grew convinced of their guilt. It was at this point that Steffens interceded (at whose request remains unclear to this day), confident that some permutation of the "golden rule" could be applied to resolve the case to the satisfaction of both sides and that the residual benefit of such a "Christianly" settlement would be a dialogue between capital and labor. But Steffens's meddling apparently infuriated Judge Bordwell, who tossed the book at the McNamaras even after they'd altered their pleas to guilty expecting to be shown leniency. Both brothers received lengthy prison terms. Steffens was blasted from all sides. Capital -- led by Harrison Gray Otis, proprietor of the TIMES, and Theodore Roosevelt -- thumbed their noses at him, as did labor, cheerleaded by Emma Goldman and Max Eastman, who charged Steffens with sanctimonious naiveté for collaborating with the anti-McNamara forces. Reed's position was more ambiguous and he composed SANGAR ostensibly in praise of his mentor's work in Los Angeles. Reed went so far as to read SANGAR aloud to Steffens in a Greenwich Village restaurant prior to sending it off to POETRY magazine, where Harriet Monroe not only published it but gave it an award. But twenty years later when he wrote his autobiography, and Reed was many years dead, Steffens took no pride in the dedication. "John Reed, my own boy," he noted, "wrote a fierce poem, 'Sangar,' denouncing me.

In truth this final endearing comedy, which had to compete for attention with such novelties as Le sacre du printemps when it was first performed, has never been put to a fair test on the stage." Text a. Rückseite, leichte Gbrsp. - Die Ausstellung "Herbstsalon" wurde am 20. September 1913 in angemieteten Ausstellungsräumen (?Lepke-Räume") in der Potsdamer Straße 75, Ecke Pallasstraße, Dritte Etage, auf 1200 m eröffnet, unweit Waldens Galerie "Der Sturm" in der Potsdamer Straße 134a, und schloss am 1. Dezember 1913. Der Name der Ausstellung orientierte sich an dem seit 1903 in Paris durchgeführten Salon d'Automne. Die Ausstellung war eine Kontrastveranstaltung zur Sonderbundausstellung, die 1912 in Köln stattgefunden hatte und sich mehr der schon etablierten Moderne des Impressionismus gewidmet hatte. Im Herbstsalon gab es Künstler, die auch dort präsent gewesen waren, aber nicht zur Geltung gekommen waren, so Maler des Blauen Reiter, sowie Carlo Mense und Alexander Archipenko. Letzterer hatte auch schon im Herbstsalon in Paris ausgestellt. Der (ungenannte) Mäzen Bernhard Koehler sorgte mit 4000 Mark für die finanzielle Absicherung, ohne die die Ausstellung nicht zustande gekommen wäre. August Macke und Franz Marc nahmen die Hängung vor. Die Maler der Gruppe des Blauen Reiter bildeten den Hauptteil der Ausstellung. Marc selbst stellte auch sein programmatisches Bild "Der Turm der blauen Pferde" aus. Walden übernahm auch Künstler aus der Futurismus-Ausstellung, die er am 12. April 1912 in seiner Galerie ?Der Sturm" eröffnet hatte. In der Nachwirkung der Futuristen-Ausstellung und im Vorfeld des Herbstsalons hatte sogar das Preußische Abgeordnetenhaus am 12.         CHANCE: A Tale In Two Parts (VERY FINE COPY)

A VERY FINE example of Conrad's first major success, the book which brought his earlier novels to the attention of the reading public. It is his only novel with a female protagonist and the tale, despite lessened collector interest over the years in favor of such works of genius as LORD JIM and HEART OF DARKNESS, can be viewed as a minor masterpiece if only for its intriguing attempt to bring to female psychology the kind of insight Conrad so strongly succeeded in bringing to his male characters. This copy is completely unrubbed and unmarked, a stunning survival in this condition given it lacks the rare dustjacket. CHANCE was printed in 1913 but most copies (as here) sport the title page as a stub-borne cancel dated 1914 (made necessary by delays in production; only a few dozen copies still exist with the original 1913 title and we've never seen a truly fine example). This copy is also in the binding state with the imprint showing the "U" in Methuen. It has adverts dated Autumn 1918. Although the bibliographic points on this title are fun to discuss (for some) if one has a passion for variations in the design of a publisher's imprint as stamped on the spine (sometimes books are bound at more than one location using different stamping tools) or adverts (they are insertions without any reliability; we never use them as bibliographic proof for anything). This is the 21st century and, unless you have the true integral 1913 title page, nothing really matters here except condition, condition, condition. Housed in a nice quarter morocco slipcase.. . First Edition. Decorative Cloth. VERY FINE.

Though there is no indication of such in the book itself, this volume was in the possession of Louis Bryant, Reed's wife. Laid in is an interesting piece: a 6" x 7-1/4" reproduction of an unidentified figure on which is written on the verso in an unidentified hand: "In the world is a big place which is called Russia, and there is a little place, my heart, which is full of gratefulness and love for a little American doll Louise Bryant. And when Louise thinks of Russia I beg her to think of me ever yours." Following that is a name, partly obliterated, dated Moscow, April 1921. Light wear to edges; excellent copy. Eduard Kosmack, the art publisher, was a friend of Egon Schiele, who depicted him five times. Mounted color plate on title page by Hugo Falkenstein. List of artists and 45 plates, of which 17 are mounted and in color. Most of the designers were associated with Josef Hoffmann and were members of the Wiener Werkstatte. Designs for textiles and other decorative work by Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Otto Prustscher, Franz and Lotte Fochler, Emil Hoppe, Josef Zotti, Max Benirschke, Karl Klaus and others. Otto Prutscher was an architect and designer influenced by contemporary Secessionist style. He designed the marble room for the Kunstschau in 1908 which was executed by craftsmen of the Wiener Werkstatte and worked n a contemporary idion similar to that of Hoffmann, designing textiles, jewelry, graphics and ceramics. Emil Hoppe was an architect who worked with Otto Wagner on major commissions including the Post Office Savings Bank and the Church Am Sohne.Member of the Wiener Werkstatte, he created textile designs for Johann Backhausen & Sohne. Lotte Fochleer, another student of Hoffmann, worked for the Wiener Werkstatte from 1908 to 1914 designing fashion and fabric designs. Josef Zotti, an architect, also designed interiors, furniture, metalwork and textiles, and his work reflects that of Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstatte. His textiles were an important element of early 20th century design.. Cloth and Pictorial Boards. Excellent. Small 4to.

        Privates Fotoalbum von Annie Schmidt (*1893 - 1989* von 1911 in Eastbourne ( England ) bis 1914 in Hellerau ( bei Dresden ).

      . Fotoalbum mit 98 montierten, teils beschriften schwarz-weißen bzw. getönten Fotos aus Eastbourne, England sowie aus Hamburg und aus Hellerau bei Dresden. Offenbar besuchte die Verfasserin des Albums die Jacques-Dalcrozeschule ( = Bildungsanstalt für Musik und Rhythmus / jetzt Festspielhaus Hellerau ) im Winter 1913-1914. Die Fotos meist im Format 8,5 x 6 cm ( Höhe x Breite ), aber auch einige kleinere Fotos. Die Aufnahmen beginnen um 1910 herum in Hamburg, Annie Schmidt hier u.a. mit ihrer Freundin *Hertha Hagenbeck*, dann private Aufnahmen aus Eastbourne und Umgebung ( meist Freundinnen ), später ca. 1911-1912 wieder in Hamburg. Im Winter 1913-1914 dann folgen Aufnahmen aus Hellerau: Mit Freundinnen und Mitschülerinnen, teils vor Gebäuden in Hellerau ( wie dem von Heinrich Tessenow gebauten Festspielhaus ), im Damenluftbad dort, bei Ausflügen, beim Tennisspielen bzw. Cricketspielen ( DSSC-Turnier laut Bildbeschreibung, wohl Dresdener Cricket-Club ), Hellerau 1914 mit Haus I und II sowie links Salzmanns Haus ( Alexander von Salzmann: Russischer Maler und Lichtkünstler wohnte in Hellerau und arbeitete für Dohrn und Dalcroze. Sowie weitere Aufnahmen aus Hellerau von Freundinnen, Lehrern, vor Schüler-Wohnhäusern sowie 1 Bild einer Szene. Zwischen den Albumsseiten lose angebrachte maschinengeschriebene Zettelchen mit Angaben zu etlichen Bildern. Die Fotos zusammen in einem geblümten Oln-Album mit Kordelheftung, 4° ( 22 x 17,5 cm ). Light wear to edges; excellent copy. Eduard Kosmack, the art publisher, was a friend of Egon Schiele, who depicted him five times. Mounted color plate on title page by Hugo Falkenstein. List of artists and 45 plates, of which 17 are mounted and in color. Most of the designers were associated with Josef Hoffmann and were members of the Wiener Werkstatte. Designs for textiles and other decorative work by Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Otto Prustscher, Franz and Lotte Fochler, Emil Hoppe, Josef Zotti, Max Benirschke, Karl Klaus and others. Otto Prutscher was an architect and designer influenced by contemporary Secessionist style. He designed the marble room for the Kunstschau in 1908 which was executed by craftsmen of the Wiener Werkstatte and worked n a contemporary idion similar to that of Hoffmann, designing textiles, jewelry, graphics and ceramics. Emil Hoppe was an architect who worked with Otto Wagner on major commissions including the Post Office Savings Bank and the Church Am Sohne.Member of the Wiener Werkstatte, he created textile designs for Johann Backhausen & Sohne. Lotte Fochleer, another student of Hoffmann, worked for the Wiener Werkstatte from 1908 to 1914 designing fashion and fabric designs. Josef Zotti, an architect, also designed interiors, furniture, metalwork and textiles, and his work reflects that of Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstatte. The cover is bright, with just very light rubs to extremities and occasional looseness between sections. 32 beautiful colour plates, with captioned tissue guards. This collection of fairy tales was gathered by the Mrs Craik as "the best collection attainable". The stories were traced back to their original versions, and retranslated in as true a form as possible. They include tales from authors such as Perrault and Grimm, as well as old English fairy tales, whose original authors are no longer known. Stories include: Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Hop-O'-My-Thumb, Cinderella, Jack the Giant Killer and many others.

First American Edition, first printing, pre-publication state (with the title page dated 1913). In October 1913 Doubleday Page issued about 150 copies dated 1913, before Methuen advised them that the book could not be published until 1914 (due to the binder's strike in England -- Methuen had allowed only about 51 English copies dated 1913 to reach the public). These 150 American copies have been characterized as a "copyright issue," but Cagle asserts that that is erroneous, and that they more likely were advance review copies. In any event, the rest of the first printing, not yet bound, was equipped with new preliminary pages dated 1914 and was not issued until March 1914.~This is a fine copy; loosely inserted is a color-pictorial "Six Big Books for 1913" DP&Co promotional flyer. Although the 51 Methuen copies now sell for about $5,000.00 when they surface on the market, these American copies are in our opinion just as scarce. Cagle A17b(1).
